LOCAL HISTORY

The Maize and Snitz Festival will celebrate Native American and Pennsylvania German cultures through living history demonstrations at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival will feature food, interpreters in traditional dress, hands-on activities, tours of the longhouse, and demonstrations of Colonial-era arts, crafts, and farm life. There is an admission fee. Children age 6 and under may attend for free. Visit www.lmhs.org.

CROP Walk To Celebrate 50 Years Of Fighting Hunger

John and Joleen Gamber did not receive any premarital counseling before they tied the knot 27 years ago. John and Casie Garver went through six sessions of counseling with their pastor prior to embarking their journey of matrimony, now a decade strong. Both couples, however, have found value in attending FamilyLife’s “Weekend to Remember” marriage conferences and want to share something similar with Southern End residents in an accessible way. “ We know that marriage is not always easy,” Casie explained. “We wanted to bring encouragement and help to other marriages.” “We’re excited to bring a more reasonable (cost option), and they don’t have to travel,” Joleen added. “Next year we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk, but this year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national CROP Hunger Walk,” said local coordinator Mary Etta Reinhart. “We are setting big goals this year.” Reinhart noted that the goal of raising $12,000 through the event on Saturday, Oct. 19, is doable, as last year, 67 participants raised more than $11,500 - the fourthlargest amount raised since the Solanco CROP Walk began. “We had See CROP Hunger Walk pg 5

The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local

of Providence Church, will serve as facilitators for FamilyLife’s “The Art of Marriage: Getting to the Heart of God’s Design” when it is presented at their church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, on Friday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The conference was previously offered at the church about 10 years ago, and the materials and content have been updated since then. During the conference, attendees will watch DVDs on six topics and process what they have learned with the aid of a workbook, which will be provided. Married and engaged couples are invited to attend, as people in both stages of life may benefit from learning about God’s purpose and plan, as well as overcoming isolation, fulfilling responsibilities, improving communication and working through conflict, experiencing real intimacy, and leaving a lasting legacy. will host the 34th annual Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Boehm’s United Methodist Campus, 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street. The event will be held rain or shine. Homemade apple butter, dumplings, and homemade apple ice cream will be available for purchase. Stehman’s Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) will provide a variety of hot and cold luncheon foods. Boehm’s UMC will offer homemade baked goods. Door prizes will be drawn every half-hour. Tours of the 1791 historic stone chapel and a video outlining the story of Martin Boehm will be available throughout the day. Vendors will be on hand offering handcrafted wares.
