A Solanco Celebration

Over70 years ago, a group of local farmers gathered to envision a now-revered tradition in the Southern End: the Solanco Fair. The farmers wrote letters to prominent members of the community such as the Solanco High School principal, the leader of a local Lions Club and the head of the agricultural department and received an overwhelming amount of support. A community meeting was held in June of 1950, and the first fair took place that September.

What started as a humble celebration of the Southern End and its values has evolved into one of its largest community events of the year. The fair was first held at the Quarryville fire hall and has moved several times to accommodate its growth; it is now held on several acres of land that the Solanco Fair Association has acquired over the years. Multiple Fair Association buildings have been constructed to house a kitchen, restrooms, livestock and various exhibits.

The Solanco Fair has always maintained its roots in local families and agriculture, steering away from having carnival-type events.

The first fair instead featured a fair queen contest, tractor driving contest and a performance from the Solanco High School band.

In 1952, the first Wednesday evening parade was introduced. The parade has grown to become a major highlight of the fair for Quarryville residents and fairgoers; this year, hundreds of spectators lined the streets of the town with lawn chairs to get a good view of the procession.

“It’s always fun to see everybody out and enjoying themselves. It’s a great family night,” said Amy Wade, who comes each year to see her daughter perform in the Octorara JuniorSenior High School band.

The parade featured a variety of groups from the Southern End, including fire companies and businesses as well as school bands and other musicians and dancers. The Solanco school band, Debbie’s School of Dance, Rawlinsville Fire

Company and Timberline Church were among the participants in the parade, and children gleefully gestured for truck drivers to sound their horns as they rolled past.

The fair also serves as an opportunity for Solanco residents to show off their skills and crafts. Each day of the fair, students displayed their prized livestock in animal shows, bakers were judged on their goods and gardeners presented their finest produce.

On Friday evening, Haylee Byers was crowned the Solanco fair queen, after which a tractor pull competition and an Iron Man contest took place..

“Sleepy Hollow” Will Return To Rock Ford

The Theater of the Seventh Sister (TSS) will present a production of “Sleepy Hollow” at the Historic Rock Ford and Theater, with opening night taking place on Thursday, Oct. 13. Two productions will be held on each Thursday and Friday at 7 and 8:30 p.m., and the final performance will be on Friday, Nov. 4.

The play will be performed on the first floor of the Hand Mansion, which will be altered to portray the Van Tassel family home in Washington Irving’s famous tale. Audience members will follow characters such as Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel through each room of the mansion as the story is told. “We have a dream cast this year; everyone who is portraying their roles are very fine actors that are physically and vocally suited to their roles,” said Cynthia Charles, artistic and managing director of TSS.

Baking Contest Announces Winners

There were a total of 106 entrants with 303 entries in the Baked Products Section at the Solanco Fair this year, and 28 of those entrants participated in the annual baking contests. Four bakers were selected as winners in these competitions on Sept. 14.

The winner of the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest was Amanda Kreider of Quarryville. This event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF), which also sponsors the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest. In the apple pie contest, the winner was Steve Berkoski of Conestoga.

Pennsylvania’s INCREDIBLE Angel Food Cake Contest was once again co-sponsored

by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Dana Huber from Quarryville had the winning entry, a raspberry swirl angel food cake.

Millie Groff, 9, of Quarryville won the Cookies, Brownies and Bars Junior Baking Contest with her entry of brownies. This contest is sponsored by the PA Preferred program, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and the contest encourages youths to find locally grown or produced ingredients for their baking.

All four of these certified contest winners are eligible to enter the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2023, where first-place winners can receive cash prizes.

The community is invited to attend the latest performance by Encore! Homeschool Productions, a central Pennsylvania Christian homeschool theater troupe. The group will stage the courtroom drama “12 Angry Jurors” on Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Area Playhouse, 630 Cherry Drive, Hershey.

The play focuses on 12 jury members who must decide whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murder. Eleven jurors initially vote that the man is guilty of the crime and then try to convince the one

holdout to change his vote.

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.facebook.com/encore homeschoolproductions or www.encorehsp.org. Tickets will also be available at the door. Small concessions will be available during the performances.

A Community Cleanup Day will be held at the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail in Martic and Conestoga townships on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. Community members who would like to help should meet at the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail parking area at the intersection of Red Hill Road and Mar-

ticville Road (Route 324) in Pequea.

Volunteers will work along the trail and on both sides of the trestle. Tasks will include general weeding, trash and debris removal, minor tree and brush trimming and some mulching.

Martic and Conestoga townships have been working

to rebuild the Martic Forge trestle bridge, as the bridge deck burned in a 2018 arson. Completion of the work, along with the reconstruction of the crosswalk and trail approaches at the bottom of Red Hill Road, will enable a grand opening of the trestle bridge and a currently closed portion of the rail trail.

The opening of the trail will connect Conestoga Township through Martic Township to Providence Township and thereby open a continuous 20-mile section of the rail trail. The work is projected to be completed in late October.

Giving women an opportunity to hope again. That’s part of the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI), a nonprofit that works to combat human trafficking. You can help support that mission by attending the Tapas Shindig. The fundraising event will be held on Friday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

The evening will feature networking time, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program, a live auction and dessert and coffee. This is the fourth year for the Tapas Shindig, said Janelle Esbenshade, interim executive director of NSI. “In 2019, we wanted to create an event that was nontraditional from the typical sit-down dinner experience,” she explained. “(We wanted) to offer individuals an opportunity to connect with one another in the community

over good food and drinks while learning about the mission of North Star and how they can help support survivors of sex trafficking.”

NSI was founded in 2010 with a goal of providing physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care with a Christ-centered focus. The organization operates The Harbor, a restoration home

and program for female survivors of human trafficking.

“The program is strengthsbased, tailored to the survivors’ individual needs and matched to their current stage of change,” Esbenshade stated. “Each woman participates in individual and group therapy; has access to basic medical, dental and legal services; and receives an education and job-skills training. Our goal is for each survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored so she can return to the community and enjoy a life of sustained independence.”

NSI estimates that tens of thousands of people are victims of sex trafficking in the United States, and the organization turns away up to 10 survivors a week due to lack of space. To serve more sur-

vivors, NSI launched a capital campaign to raise funds to build the Survivor Center adjacent to The Harbor. Along with providing restoration services and treatment for local survivors who do not require housing, the center will now house NSI’s offices and programming, allowing an 80% increase in occupancy at The Harbor.

Esbenshade said the Tapas Shindig will allow people to celebrate the completion of the Survivor Center and will help to continue to raise awareness of the need for NSI’s services. “Come for a fun evening and connect with the community to better understand the issue of sex trafficking happening all around us,” she remarked, “while hearing stories of hope, healing and restoration.”

The registration deadline for the Tapas Shindig is Friday, Oct. 7. To register, visit https://bidpal.net/nsi or text NSI to 243725. North Star Initiative

Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of no-till planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops, forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.

Chesapeake Bay Founda-

tion (CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since.

According to the State Conservation Commission, REAP tax credits have been used on over 3,000 farming operations across the commonwealth since 2007.

To learn more about the Pennsylvania Farm Bill and to apply for the first-come, first-served REAP program, visit www.agriculture.pa.gov; information about REAP is available by clicking on State Conservation Commission under Plants, Land & Water.

Tennis Commands 4-1 Win Over McCaskey

Playing singles first and with no repeats, the tennis team earned a solid 4-1 victory over visiting McCaskey Friday, Sept. 16.

“After winning two of the three singles matches, we let the doubles teams know we only needed one more win to win the match,” said head coach Annie Hammel. “Both teams stepped up and played more aggressively and did their part to pull out the victory.”

Ava Peiffer and Kiara Chmielecki pulled out a marathon result 7-6 (7-3), 4-6 (10-5) while Caroline Lantz and Hailey Stanton won 6-4, 6-1. In singles play it was Adrienne Dolan (6-2, 6-1) and Grace Pursel (6-2, 6-0) helping to provide the win, Solanco’s fourth of the season.

At Hempfield last Wednesday, Peiffer’s 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles was Solanco’s only win in a 6-1 loss to the Knights. Purcel split sets with Megan Wendell but then dropped the tiebreaker 10-4.

BOYS SOCCER

The boys’ soccer team, with just four seniors, continued pushing for their first win of the season. In back-toback games, the Mules dropped a tightly contested 2-0 final against Elco on Thursday, Sept. 15 and one day later suffered a 4-0 loss at Elizabethtown.

“We’re a very young team,” said head coach Remy Wright. “Was proud to see the defense work great today. That is our biggest improvement. We were working as a team instead of as individuals.

“Ben Drumm played his best game of the season, despite allowing those two goals,” he added. “And Ayden Herr earned his starting stripes after this game. I feel confident with his abilities and decisions.”

After a scoreless first half, Elco took the lead and then some, knocking in both scores in less than a minute.

A pair of first half goals proved to be the difference in Solanco’s 2-0 loss at Lebanon last Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Solanco’s 25-17 win over Ephrata Friday, Sept. 17 was their fourth win of the season. Solanco started the 2018 season with four straights wins as well. They finished 7-5. In 2015 the Mules won nine straight en route to an 11-3 final record.

The visitors opened the scoring with a 2-yard keeper by Brody Mellinger in the first quarter (the two-point conversion was denied) and closed the scoring with a Cole Harris 4-yard run (the PAT kick was blocked).

Ephrata got on board with a 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter and both teams traded scores over the rest of the second and third frames. Solanco scored on a Mellinger (106 yards on 24 carries) oneyard keeper and Harris (118 yards on 21 carries) scampered 11-yards to paydirt and 19-10 first half lead.

“We still had some breakdowns on special teams that we have to fix,” said head coach Tony Cox. “The guys fought through some adversity and finished on top. The

defense held them to 53 rushing yards and Cole Harris, and the line, did a great job as well. But the best part of the night was hearing the kids on the sidelines talking positive encouragement when things weren’t going our way.

“We’re taking it one game at a time,” said Cox. “There’s still a lot to work on.”

Josiah Forren, Aden Herr and Nick Defrancesco combined for 22 total tackles.

FIELD HOCKEY

Playing four games over a stretch of seven days is a tall task. The field hockey team put forth its best efforts, posting mixed results. They dropped a 5-0 result at Lancaster Country Day on Thursday, Sept. 15 and bounced back with a 1-1 tie at Eastern York. Last Monday they hosted Garden Spot and suffered a 3-0 defeat. They wrapped up the fourgame stretch on Wednesday with a 1-0 shutout over Lebanon for their third win of the season.

LCDS scored in three of the four quarters to pull away. Julianna Tice recorded a pair of defensive saves while keeper Caitlin Bennethum added ten saves.

Against Eastern York it was Sadie Cook, assisted by Kate Kauffman, who gave Solanco a first quarter lead. The hosts knotted the score in the third quarter. Bennethum was credited with 13 saves.

The Spartans controlled the tempo last Monday, pounding out 19 shots in the 3-0 final. Bennethum collected 16 saves in the loss, Solanco’s sixth of the season.

A Hannah Landis goal at the 4:32 mark of the fourth quarter was the game-winner for Solanco who dominated with 10 corners and 18 shots.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

After opening the season with six straight wins, the girls’ soccer team hit a rough patch, dropping four straight.

Thursday, Sept. 15, the

Bears’ Jena Witters notched three goals in a span of 13 minutes to erase Alyssa Harpe putting Solanco on the board in the opening minute. E-town made it 4-1 at the half. Harpe scored the final goal of the game in the 73rd minute.

“This was our toughest game to date,” said head coach Matt Jansen. “Witters

made the most of her opportunities. We made some adjustments in the second half and played much better. We did have chances, but things did not go our way.

“Alyssa Harpe had a great game and Alanna Brown showed great leadership on the field and helped our team to keep playing hard.”

On Saturday morning Solanco suffered a second straight loss, this one 2-1 against visiting Cocalico.

“Both teams scored on penalty kicks in the first half, and they got the game-winner in the second half on a free kick just outside the penalty area,” Jansen pointed out. “They did a nice job capitalizing. We had a couple of set pieces in dangerous areas and couldn’t get the break we needed. In a competitive game like that, you have to look to capitalize.”

Brown scored in the eighth minute, giving Solanco a short-lived lead as the Eagles tied the game one minute later.

Last Monday Solanco built a 15-6 edge in shots on goal and led 9-1 in corners yet dropped a 3-1 decision against Ephrata. The Mounts jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the hosts prevented the shutout when Harpe capitalized on a pass from Sarah Landis in the 61st minute.

Solanco’s unlucky string continued with a 2-0 loss at Manheim Central last Wednesday despite earning more corners and taking more shots.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team battled Elizabethtown and Manheim Central over the last week and finished with two more losses. The Bears opened with a 25-10 first set win and went on to win 25-17, 25-9. Marissa Cannizzaro topped the chart with 22 digs while Alaina Herr recorded 7 dills, 1 block and 1 ace. Sophie Stoltzfus dished out 6 assists, Emily Powl added one block and Cheyenne Henry one ace.

Last Tuesday Solanco set the tone early, winning 25-20 against visiting Manheim Central. The Barons, however, regrouped to win 25-17, 25-18, 25-7.

“We had good ball control in that first set and capitalized on their errors,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “The second and third set we got off to a slow start and played catchup. In the fourth set, we just struggled.

“On the plus side, our middle, Emily Powl (9 kills), crushed it offensively and did a nice job.”

Addison Boyd (13 assists), Cannizzaro (9 digs), Herr (1 block), and Stoltzfus (5 aces) were the stats leaders.

In late summer of 2021, artist Lisa Madenspacher was contacted by the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation to create a painting to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the amphitheater, which has been home to the Long’s Park Amphitheater Summer Music Series since 1962.

Madenspacher reacted positively to the request. “I was delighted to be asked,” recalled Madenspacher, who devoted much time that fall to completing the painting, which she presented to the foundation in January.

In celebration of the organization’s anniversary, a gala and art auction will be held on

Friday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. A highlight of the auction will be the sale of Madenspacher’s rendition of the amphitheater during the annual July 4 concert, which features fireworks.

Madenspacher initially approached the project by visiting the park and taking photos of the amphitheater. Although impressed with the architecture, she struggled to get a photo that pleased her. “I spent about three hours in that park and took a million pictures,” recalled Madenspacher. “Then I went around to the other side, the angle that you see in the painting, and suddenly it looked sleek and cool.”

Lisa Madenspacher (inset) completed a painting of the Long’s Park Amphitheater in celebration of the structure’s 60th anniversary.

Madenspacher went to work re-creating the image with her own hand. “I did several initial sketches and watercolors trying to come up with an idea,” she said, noting that she originally focused on the band and the music. “It just wasn’t working.” Madenspacher talked to her daughter, artist Adrienne Judge, known for her 3-D creations featuring flowers. “I asked my daughter, whose opinion I have come to trust, and she suggested that I focus on the crowd,” said Madenspacher.

“I took it from that standpoint and once I did, the focus became the amphitheater with the crowd surrounding it.” From there, Madenspacher added personalities to the members of the crowd. “It was great fun,” she said.

Choosing the July 4 setting was something Madenspacher called a “no-brainer.” “That’s the peak of the season,” she said. “It’s festive.” Adding that she knew the evening setting with the fireworks and flag would bring the painting to life, she

stated, “I wanted something eye-catching and hopefully breathtaking, so I incorporated the nighttime fireworks.”

Madenspacher estimates she spent about 60 hours on the painting, noting that she worked on it between other projects. “That’s the way I work, particularly when it’s (a) conceptual (work),” she explained. “You block it in, and then you make some changes. You refine it, and step away for a week or two and see what it needs and then go back.” Madenspacher believes this method enhances the creative process. “You go back to it with a different perspective, and it helps tremendously,” she said.

Sleepy Hollow

Charles became the artistic and managing director for TSS in 2014 and has assisted with several productions such as “Julius Caesar,” “Tales From the Caretakers” and “Emma the Matchmaker.” Prior to her role with the organization, Charles performed in multiple plays in the area. “I love the quality of the plays we perform; they’re things you don’t generally see elsewhere. We always love collaborating with Historic Rock Ford and working with artists ranging from emerging playwrights to veteran actors,” said Charles.

TSS was founded in 1989

and has offered several shows to the area over the years, many of which have been held at Historic Rock Ford. The organization does not operate out of any one venue; past collaborations have been held at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, Tellus360 and Ephrata Performing Arts Center. The upcoming production of “Sleepy Hollow” will feature primarily local talent, which TSS has relied on following the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of many theaters. For more information on TSS, visit https://seventhsister.com. To purchase tickets for th event,

visit https://tinyurl.com /sleepyhollowtix.

The production has been adapted from its source material by Sam Slaymaker, executive director of Historic Rock Ford, who has collaborated with TSS many times in the past. Historic Rock Ford itself encompasses over 30 acres of land in southeast Lancaster city and offers

guided tours of the centuriesold Hand Mansion, which belonged to Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand. “The main thing I think the audience will enjoy is the fact that being at Rock Ford is like going back in time,” said Charles.

Tennis Tournament Features Recognition Lunch

The Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge, held at Hempfield recCenter, again included its annual lunch at Blue Collar Restaurant in Landisville.

Sponsored and hosted by Monica Rakoczy of EnterTraining Solutions, this year’s event had a turnout of nearly 130 attendees.

Although it has been held for many years during the tournament, 2021 was the first year the event was dedicated to

recognizing inspiring women from the community. The honorees at the 2022 lunch were Miriam Witmer and Carrie Johnson.

Witmer, an avid Hempfield recCenter tennis player, is the assistant professor of educational foundations at Millersville University, where she advocates for and mentors students of color with the ultimate goal to create a more diverse teaching workforce. Her local involvement also focuses on creating a socially just community. She is co-founder of the Social Justice Collective at Millersville and is a DEI trainer. Additionally, she serves as president for the Celebration of Life, a fundraising organization supporting local cancer patients and their families. She is also a longtime partner of the School District of Lancaster’s Project Teacher Development, which focuses

on diverse student and staff initiatives.

Johnson founded the Lancaster branch of Girls on the Run in 2009 and was instrumental in growing this local organization throughout Lancaster and Lebanon counties, impacting the lives of nearly 20,000 girls in grades three through 12. Girls on the Run is a nonprofit, 10-week program

aimed at inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Core values taught include confidence, care, connections, competence, and contribution to impact the community and develop compassion. The overall goal is empowering girls to have the self-confidence to achieve

their highest potential and ultimately make a difference.

Recently, Johnson founded Carrie Johnson and Associates and Drop Below the Surface Retreats. In her new endeavor, she is working to empower women with strength-based coaching and
