SLCCC will hold professional development and leadership conference

The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) will hold its first professional development and leadership conference on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the DoubleTree Resort located at 2400 Willow Street Pike in Lancaster. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will include breakfast, a box lunch, and workshops designed to equip community members with tools to grow their businesses and network with other organizations.

“Lifelong learning is really imperative to success. So many things change rapidly: technology, the economy and the political climate,” said SLCCC president Kristen Phipps. “We’ve built a very organic entrepreneurial community where we can mentor each other. We want to continue our businesses’ growing and provide our community a place to shop local.”

The conference will begin with a check-in and breakfast from 8:30 to 9 a.m., followed by a brief welcome and a talk from keynote speaker Sheila Jones. Jones will share advice on overcoming challenges to grow a successful business based on her own professional and personal life experiences. After Jones’ talk, 45-minute workshop sessions will commence at 9:30 a.m.

During registration, guests will choose three of five workshops to attend, and a 15-minute break will take place after each session. The conference will wrap up with

lunch at 12:30 p.m.

Adam Grim, director of strategy at Launch Kits, will offer a workshop focused on strategic marketing for small businesses. Grim will discuss key components to help attendees develop their brands, identify target audiences and select marketing channels as they create an action plan to foster success.

Design Like a Pro, a workshop offered by SLCCC board member Jadan Willis, will teach participants how to use Canva, a graphic design tool. Willis will discuss key elements behind making professional and efficient graphics,

drawing from her experience in photography and real estate.

Marie Monville of Elevated Solutions Consulting will hold a workshop to share tips for becoming an effective and confident communicator. Monville will discuss strategies to overcome the fear of public speaking, connect with audience members and leave an impression with an impactful message.

Lancaster Society of Human Resource Management board member Rachel Ewell’s workshop will focus on the importance of employee retention. Ewell will help attendees create an employer

Solid Rock Youth Ministries (SRYM) will host a fall banquet fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Barn of Nottingham, 101 Ponds Edge Drive, Nottingham. The event, themed “Growing Together,” will feature dinner, live music and a talk from guest speaker Zac Bauermaster, a local author and the principal of Providence Elementary School. Tickets are available to purchase at a set price, and sponsorship opportunities are available to guests who wish to reserve a table of eight people. The registration deadline is on Friday, Oct. 11. To register, visit www.solidrockquarryville.com/ banquet.

This is the first year SRYM has organized a banquet as its fall fundraiser. Previously, the organization held its Farm to Table event to raise money and to

share information about its programs. The format was changed to better suit SRYM’s needs and continuous growth, which will be highlighted in the theme as

Christian nonprofit organization American Home Life International (AHLI) began decades ago with the dream of Marvin and Ruth Powers, a newlywed couple from Lancaster that wished to serve side-by-side as missionaries overseas. Although their initial dream of evangelism abroad was never realized, Marvin and Ruth hosted their first international student in

1972. More than fifty years later, AHLI has served thousands of students from around the globe, and it continues to help them find host families throughout the United States.

AHLI’s mission statement is to “provide quality education programs to international students in the safe, caring environment of Christian host families where they will experience the love of Christ.” Nicole Bianchi, a resident of West Lampeter, is an

well as Bauermaster’s talk. Bauermaster, who has written multiple books on leadership and Christian values, will donate the proceeds of his book sales to SRYM until the end of September. “(Bauermaster) has a big heart for people to love each other and the Lord,” said Jillian Hess, SRYM’s advancement director. “He’s written books about growing your relationship with God, which goes hand in hand with Solid Rock’s expansion and growth of the ministry.”

“As Sold Rock keeps growing, we need our support to grow as well,” said Raeanne Nixon, executive director of SRYM. “The fall banquet is larger-scale overall, and it will allow us to continue offering free programming for families in the community.”

Earlier this year, SRYM announced a capital campaign for an expansion project that will entail the addition of a new facility to offer more programs and to increase their capacity. The number of students participating in SRYM’s programs increased by nearly 100 this year, and the organization is seeking volunteers to help accommodate its continued growth.

SRYM will kick off its school-year programs the week of Monday, Sept. 30. The programs are offered in local schools at no cost, and each program includes different activities tailored to a specific age group. The elementary school programs feature after-school meetings where kids can enjoy a snack and participate in group activities as well as Bible studies. At the middle school and high school levels, students have group discussions and play games together. Middle-schoolers and high-schoolers also have opportunities to participate in a special monthly event; in the past, monthly events have included glow-in-the-dark dodgeball matches, movie nights and hikes. He and his wife, Reda, a 1960 Solanco graduate, reside in Topton.

Carrigan, Class of 1963, was a four-year varsity letter winner in Solanco’s baseball program. Carrigan led the team in stolen bases and batting average all four years. Carrigan carried a batting average of greater than .300 each year of high school and an average of .364 during his senior year; his career batting average still stands as one of the best in program history. In 1963, Carrigan was selected as a league all-section outfielder and was a member of the Section 3 championship team. He and his wife, Trudy, reside in Quarryville.

Hopkins, Class of 2017, was a three-year member of the track and field and football programs at Solanco. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2015 for the track and field program and was a member of the district-qualifying boys’ 4x100-meter relay team that finished second. He received the Senior Athlete of the Year award for both track and football, and he lettered in both sports for all three seasons.

He was chosen as Solanco’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2019. During his

senior season on the football field, he finished with 1,671 rushing yards - just five yards shy of Hopkins’ record; set the single-season touchdown record of 30 touchdowns - a record he still holds; and finished the season as the all-time leading rushing quarterback in L-L League history at the time.

After graduation, McGuire entered a fouryear apprenticeship program through Jay

AHLI coordinator. Bianchi’s job is to locate families in the community that wish to open their homes to students, visiting the potential hosts to make sure they will be a good fit. “I love my job. The kinds of families that open up their homes are usually incredible people,” Bianchi said. “Every time I leave a home, I’m blown away by the heart of the community.”

Bianchi’s experience with AHLI began when she was 6 years old, after her parents had decided to host students through the organization. “It was just a part of our normal family culture,” said Bianchi. “I even went to Japan to visit a student who I consider a sister to me.”

After graduating high school, Bianchi married a professional baseball player whose career required them to travel frequently. Bianchi and her husband lived with AHLI host families until his retirement, and they decided to become a host family themselves after returning to Lancaster.

Bianchi has hosted students from various countries in Europe and Asia, and she is currently hosting a student from China. As a coordinator, Bianchi meets with visiting students once per month to check in and share a fun activity.

“I had such a passion for (AHLI) from hosting,” Bianchi said. “I feel like it does things really well, putting kids in safe, caring homes
