Folksy Fiddle Music Will Highlight Bridlepath Fundraiser

Award-winning musician

Hannah King will be the first artist to grace Bridlepath Equine Center’s new event space and headline the nonprofit’s Fall Benefit Concert.

The show will be held Friday, Oct. 24, at 787 Valley Road, Quarryville. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Space is limited. Register by Wednesday, Oct. 1, by going to www.bridlepathequinecenter.org or calling 717-945-2799.

King is a singer and songwriter, and has won local, state, and national awards for her work as a fiddle player.

“We have heard Hannah perform at different venues and have been very, very impressed,” said Bridlepath’s fundraising chair Kris Kauffman,

The inaugural occasion was such a big success that the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) will host its second annual Professional Development Conference.

The event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DoubleTree Resort Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike.

Tickets for SLCCC members and people from the community are on sale through Friday, Oct. 3. Community members will receive a coupon to use on their membership if they decide to join the group.

Go to https://southernlan casterchamber.org/conference/ to purchase tickets.

SLCCC conference committee chair Jadan Willis said the event is designed for small business owners and nonprofit organizations.

It’s an ideal occasion for people with a healthy appetite for helping others.

The annual Taste of New Hope event will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.

In addition to a variety of food, there will be live and silent auctions. The proceeds will benefit New Hope Community Life Ministry.

Registration prior to the event is requested but not required. Go to www.newhopeministry.info or call 717-786-2802 to register.

“It’s a two for one,” said Willis. “It’s education and networking built into one event, and it’s affordable, and it’s efficient because you can cram a lot of value into a six-hour day. It’s customized to you in the sense that you can pick your own classes and then also meet new people, whether they’re members of our chamber or are other guests, because we will have a lot of networking time between the breakfast and the lunch and then in between sessions as well.”

SLCCC president Kristen Phipps added, “The networking is a big thing, bringing in a variety of business members and also professionals. It’s not necessarily only geared towards business

owners, but also if you’re a professional and you work for a larger company. You will be able to network with other folks in the area and learn something applicable that you can walk away with. We want people to be able to go back to their business or back to their company and have some tactics that they can start working in their business right away.”

Attendees will be able to choose three of the five onehour workshops. “We did come up with some topics, had people vote, and then we did the same thing this year, and we also took feedback from last year to incorporate to this year,” said Willis. “We wanted to make sure that the content was tailored to our membership, even though the conference is open to people outside of our membership as well, so that we were on point in delivering content that people want to see. We also want to provide a variety because this isn’t specifically just a marketing conference, so not all of it is marketing related. We want it to be applicable to businesses of all sizes, whether you’re a solopreneur or you

have 10 employees.”

The workshops are “Avoiding HR Nightmares” with speaker Leslie Wireback of Wireback Works, “Budgeting” with speaker Kyle Beltle of Proactive CPA, “Customer Experience: Deliver 5-Star Service That Keeps People Talking & Sending You Referrals!” by Cody Helm of Helm Construction Company, “Decode & Deliver: Selling to Every Personality Style With Confidence” with speaker Sheila Jones of Whicked Results, and “Step Back to Move Forward: Planning with Clarity & Intent” by Matt Musser with Rooted Growth Strategies.

“We wanted to focus on having expert-led workshops,” Willis said. “The people that we have speaking are professionals in that field that they’re speaking on.”

After the workshops, there will be a panel discussion about artificial intelligence.

“It’s affordable, buffet lunch, and it’s local,” Willis said of the conference. “We’ve found that with a lot of conferences, you are going to Philly or Baltimore, big cities, and you are traveling. We wanted to make something hyperlocal, so that it’s accessible to everyone, both location-wise and pricing-wise.”

The SLCCC chose to host a professional development conference after receiving a grant. “We applied to a grant from the Lancaster

County Community Foundation, and we got a grant for $5,000,” Phipps said. “One of the things we said with was that we would love to have a professional development conference right here in Lancaster. It could be costly to travel to Philly, travel to Harrisburg, some of these bigger cities, and we really wanted to bring something close to home geared towards small businesses and something very affordable. A lot of the times attending conferences can be in the thousands of dollars just to get tickets, not including travel when staying overnight. With the Lancaster County Community Foundation grant, we were able to do that, and it was such a success we want to keep it going.”

There are no geographic restrictions. “We like to say that our primary area is south of Route 30, but we have members from all over,” Phipps said. “We do have some crossover folks that are in the northern end of the county. We have some

from the neighboring counties. We’ve had guests come up from like the Maryland area, so it’s not only geared towards the southern net, but that’s primarily where we focus our marketing, and are the school districts that we support with our scholarships are south of Route 30 line.”

The conference is an ideal fit for the group’s goals. “We revamped our mission and our core values this year, which is really exciting,” said Phipps. “We really want to create affordable opportunities. I think that affordability fits in with our entrepreneurial spirit. We want to be approachable. We know that a lot of businesses just starting out don’t always have several hundred dollars to invest in being a part of a chamber, so keeping our membership dues low is really important to us, and then keeping our events free or low cost is incredibly important to us as well, without sacrificing quality of course.”

Participants talk at last year’s Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural conference.

New Hope

“It is our only fundraiser,” said Sandy Turek, who is the event chair and a member of New Hope’s boar. “We have now sort of put all of our energy in our effort into doing this one. We know that the community gets tapped from a lot of different organizations, so that’s another reason why we encourage people to come to this one, because it is our only one. Come hungry.”

The cost of tickets includes soup from C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant; barbecue and macaroni and cheese from Barnyard Catering & Concessions; açaí from Oola Bowls; pizza and Caesar salad from Dolce Vita; beef and chicken tacos from Taqueira La Mexicana; Maplehofe beverages; coffee from the Daily Grind; and cookies, cupcakes, and brownies from Sarah’s Custom Cakery.

Sarah’s Custom Cakery will also provide four super-sized cookies for the auction. The live auction led by Eric Lefever will start at 7 p.m. The list of live and silent auction items includes pottery from Larry Albright Pottery Studio; tickets to Sight & Sound, the Fulton Theatre, Hands-on House Children’s Museum, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna, and Longwood Gardens; themed baskets; passes to Pilgrim’s Oak Golf Course; gift cards from Giant, Son’s Italian Ice & Ice Cream, Kitchen Kettle Village, Village Greens, and Shady Maple Smorgasbord; and food from Stoltzfus Meats.

New Hope will also have a Buy It Now table. “There will be items that if people don’t love doing silent options or the live auction, here will be an area that they’ll just be able to buy items,” said Turek. Auction items must be paid for with cash or checks.

“This event is significantly important,” said New Hope executive director Sheila Derr said. “It funds our Hope Chest Fund, which supports over 70% of our clients right now in getting the help that they need or being able to take advantage of counseling services.”

New Hope is located at 307 W. Chesnut St., Quarryville. “We offer faith-informed professional counseling services to the community - families, individuals, and children,” said Derr. “The Hope Chest Fund funds that for over 70% of our clients.”

Derr explained that New Hope works on a sliding scale based on a percent of the poverty line. “We also take into consideration families going through significant issues in their lives,” she added.

“People should come to Taste of New Hope to support their community,” said Turek. “Mental health (issues), especially since 2020, have just gone up exponentially. I do feel like the stigma is getting less and that people are definitely more open to

getting the help that they need. This helps people that don’t have insurance or don’t have good insurance that they can come in these doors and know they’re going to get help and they’re not going to get turned away. If the community can come out and help support that, they’re doing their part.”

Derr stated, “It’’s an opportunity to love one’s neighbors. We think about the start of New Hope. It started back in the 1990s with a vision of churches in the Solanco area to invest in its

local community and the professional counseling services. Faith-informed services were needed here, so there was recognition that neighbors needed help, and that this was a way that churches could invest in their local community. It’s really about continuing to carry that legacy forward and saying, ‘Hey, our neighbors matter, and our community matters, and we want to see our community continuing to grow and to be healthy.’ This is an opportunity to invest in it in that way.”

Outpour Seeking Singers for Kids’ Choir

Katie Wieand believes in using her gifts to serve others. That’s why she is the director of the Outpour Community Worship Choirs.

The choirs rehearse in Grace Community Church of Willow Street, 212 Peach Bottom Road,

Willow Street.

The Outpour Kids Community Worship Choir for children in kindergarten through eighth grade will practice from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays from Oct. 2 to Nov. 13. The deadline to register at www.outpourkids .com is Sunday, Sept. 28. There

is a fee, which includes music and materials and a performance shirt. “If finances are an issue, we have scholarships,” Wieand said. “We have people in our congregation who have set aside resources to be able to help families.”

There is also an audition choir for students in grades six through

eight who are advanced and interested in specialized training in worship leading. The fall auditions have already been held. The winter session will start Thursday, Jan. 29.

The choirs are open to every kid regardless of location. “I think it’s important for families to know that by joining a choir here, it doesn’t mean you’re leaving your church,” Wieand said. “This is just like a sports program that’s out at a rec league, and you’re just gaining skills to be able to use back at your school. This is here for the whole community.”

The choir rehearsals will culminate with a free concert at Grace Community Church on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. “That’s open to the community for free, and the entire worship night is led by the kids and teens,” said Wieand.

The choirs are celebrating their fifth anniversary. Wieand has led the kids’ music program and the kids’ Sunday morning worship at Grace Community Church for 13 years.

“When we expanded the (church) building, when we were gifted this, we wanted to be able to help other churches who may not have the facilities or the time to be able to help their raise their kids up to be the future worship leaders,” Wieand said. “The church is going to need the next generation of leaders and pastors and worship leaders.”

Practices are designed to be inspirational, educational, and enjoyable. “(Participants) will learn the worship songs that they’re going to be leading in the concert, and they’re kids so they need to break up their time of rehearsals,” Wieand said. “In the middle of it, my husband (Matt), who is a science teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School, does the Bible devotions with science object lessons. Some things explode, and he maybe sets things on fire. There’s lots of excitement, and it really captures the kids’ attention, and they remember those things. When they’re going home, they’re sharing those stories with their families or their friends at school. It’s a way that they can share the Gospel without just telling something they experienced in a different way.”

Wieand’s aunts Janet Zeager and Joyce Speer also assist. “They’re using their

who is King’s mother-in-law. “We love the style of music. She brings a little bit of country, folksy. Her fiddle playing is amazing.”

Bridlepath executive director Danielle Swope said, “Bridlepath’s board of directors is honored to host this benefit concert with musician Hannah King. The board will be serving the catered meal to our guests as a way to say thank you and to bring awareness to the services we provide for an incredible population and the nonprofit world as we work to raise funds for these services.”

Swope noted that it will be a distinctive event. “I think we’re also trying to find different fundraising avenues that are more unique and different to the area that instead of the same old (events),” she said. “This happened to just be an event that we can host.”

King’s concert will be the first show in Bridlepath’s new building. “As we’re growing our program, Lee Kauffman has been heading up a lot of the projects around the farm to expand our services,” said Swope. “One of those improvements was our bank barn to create a Bridlepath event space for different fundraisers and for a variety of events that we can host here.

We’re honored to have Hannah King be the first event that we’re officially opening to the public to utilize that event space.”

Swope said Bridlepath Equine Center offers therapeutic horsemanship services to individuals with special needs with a variety of physical, emotional, behavioral and intellectual diagnoses.

“We serve children and adults,” she said. We have weekly participant sessions that run yearround, and then we also offer a

specialized group programming for at-risk population. We are working in partnership with Penn State’s Four Diamonds program to offer a young adult pediatric cancer support group for cancer patients and survivors. And we also just launched Unbridled Courage, which is a group for families that have special needs, kiddos who are an adoptive or foster care families. We’re hoping to expand those types of services to perhaps adult group homes and other at-risk populations down the road.”

they come in, they’re greeting them, welcoming them, and just helping them, especially the kindergartners,” Wieand said. “This is, for some of them, their first activity that they’ve been signed up for. We just find such joy in helping kids just feel excited to be here. We want the kids to grow confidence and not feel nervous by making it a relaxed environment.”

The choirs’ devotion series is called “Vibe Check.” “We can only be effective as Christians if we are constantly reflecting on how we are interacting and how we’re going about the day to day,” Wieand said. “Each week we’re going to focus on different things that help us to make sure our attitude is reflecting Christ. And it’s a good lesson for adults, so as we’re teaching it, it challenges us as well.”

Wieand is doing what she loves and loving what she does.

“My life verse is 1 Peter 4:10, using whatever gifts the Lord has given you to serve others as good stewards of his grace in our lives,” she said. “The gifts that I have are teaching and music. That’s my background. I went to college and have my master’s in vocal performance, and I had a private vocal studio here in the community for 19 and a half years and just have a love for teaching.”

She continued, “I can see the importance of the adult Christians that were in my life beyond my family growing up and feel that that’s part of what the Lord’s design is for our kids is - to surround them with positive Christian influences to support families and to support them. I look back at some of my favorite music teachers at church and just think about how they really made an impact in my life and gave me confidence in pursuing and using gifts that the Lord gave.”
