Solanco’s golf team wrapped up the regular season last Wednesday at Foxchase, taking second behind Warwick by five strokes (331-336). Wagner tied with Warwick’s Elle Overly (77) for the lowest total and in the process won the section scoring title for the fourth consecutive year “which is quite an accomplishment,” lauded head coach Greg Minnich.
Brayden Herr carded his lowest round of the season with a 79. Anna Sexton (89), Luke Herr (91), Hudson Brown (94) and Nathan Tucker (96) followed.
Solanco finishes second in Section Two at 14-6 behind Warwick’s 18-2.
The golfers found themselves back at Meadia Heights Golf last Monday, Sept. 12, this time for a Section Two outing. The team finished in third place in the rain-shortened nine-hole match.
CV, with a 168-stroke total, was the overall winner. Warwick slipped into second (170) and Solanco was two strokes behind.
Wagner’s 38 tied Elizabethtown’s Aiden Blyler for low score of the day. B. Herr (41), L. Herr (45) and Wyatt Landis (48) rounded out the counters. Tucker (48) and Sexton (51) also competed.
FOOTBALL
Josiah Forren rushed 128yards on eight carries, scored two touchdowns and sealed Solanco’s come-from-behind 29-26 thriller over Penn Manor with an interception at the Solanco 7-yard line with 2:07 left to play Friday, Sept. 9. The win puts Solanco at 3-0 heading into Section Three play.
Solanco trailed 19-7 at the half but turned things around after the break. Forren cut the lead to five with an eight-yard run with 6:01 left in the third only to see the Comets push back, taking advantage when a Mules’ blocker was hit in the leg by a Comet punt, leading to a home team TD with 54.6 left.
Forren’s big run just before the buzzer set up a three-yard scramble to start the fourth and cut the lead to 26-21. Aden Herr’s (6 solo tackles) fumble recovery set up a Cole Harris (76-yards on 17 carries) 18yard TD run with 9:25 left and Elijah Cunningham converted the two-point conversion run for Solanco’s second lead of the night. Solid defense and that final interception sealed Penn Manor’s fate.
Brody Mellinger backed Forren with 85-yards on 25 carries. His 14-yard run up the middle with 7:52 left in the second gave the Mules a short-lived 7-6 lead with 7:52 left in the first half.
VOLLEYBALL
After a 3-1 loss to Cocalico, tough play at the net pushed Solanco to a solid three game win over Lebanon, Thursday, Sept. 8. The hosts notched its first league win with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-10 result.
“Our offense was a totally different offense than what we did Tuesday. We had 25 kills and only six hitting errors,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “That really helped. Martha Weaver, Alaina Herr and Cheyenne Henry had six kills each and just two errors between them. Madison Boyle also had four kills.
Herr (5 aces), Boyle (2 blocks) and Marissa Cannizzaro (9 digs) also chipped in.
Last Tuesday, despite three aces and 13 digs from Cannizzaro, Solanco lost to Garden Spot 25-17, 25-17, 25-13. Herr (6 kills, 1 block) and Addison Boyd (7 assists) also contributed.
FIELD HOCKEY
Sadie Cook, Kate Underwood, and Rebecca Troutman each scored two goals and sparked a crushing 7-0 nonleague win over Lancaster Catholic on Sept. 7. Underwood also dished two assists and Kaitlyn Fulton added one goal and one assist as Solanco dominated from the start. “They really hustled and stepped to the ball and once we hit one, then two, and three, they picked up the pace,” exclaimed head coach Whitney Hawkins. “And we were without three starters (2 injury) and had two that never played before! “This was our first shutout since 2020 so that was awesome,” Hawkins added. That momentum, however, wasn’t quite enough to get Solanco past Lancaster Mennonite. The Blazers won 3-1 Friday afternoon. Underwood’s third quarter tally prevented the shutout. Caitlin Bennethum recorded 13 saves.
Last Tuesday, Solanco suffered a 7-1 loss to AnnvilleCleona. Kaitlyn Fulton assisted Cook with a fourth quarter goal that prevented the shutout. Cassandra Bruno and Ella Sensenig both recorded defensive saves.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team ran its winning streak to 7-0 with dominating efforts last week. Friday, Sept. 9, they crushed Kennard-Dale 9-1. Saturday they shut out Eastern York 4-0 and last Tuesday recorded a third shutout, blanking L-S 4-0.
Kara Peace, Josie Janssen and Meg Bailey gave Solanco a quick 3-0 lead after three minutes of play against K-D. Bailey tallied three more goals while Janssen scored a second and both Abby Landis and Ashley Mosteller chipped in with one. Janssen and Addison O’Donnell also dished out a pair of assists.
On the road Saturday, Alyssa Harpe gave Solanco a 1-0 first half lead while Ella Hauer notched her first varsity goal between a pair of Bailey tallies that pushed the final to 4-0.
Tuesday Solanco took control of L-S with a 3-0 first half lead. Alanna Brown finished with two scores while Bailey and Janssen added one each.
TENNIS
The tennis team opened league play with a home match against Donegal on Thursday, Sept. 8. They turned in a competitive effort in doubles play but dropped all three sets en route to a 5-2 loss.
Grace Purcel picked up a shutout win at No. 3 singles while Ava Peiffer won a tough 7-5, 63 outing at No. 4. They teamed for an 8-6 loss at No. 2 doubles where Destiny Langley and Adrienne Dolan lost 8-1 at No. 1 and Kiara Chmielecki and Caroline Lantz fell 8-4 at the third tandem.
CROSS
COUNTRY
At home Tuesday, Sept. 13 Emma Baxter (22:23) and Anthony Solis Morales (18:43) led Solanco to victories over Garden Spot and Cocalico with first place finishes.
The girls placed five in the top ten with Daira Neaves (3rd), Christine Wagner (4th), Olivia Singleton (8th) and Lexi Groff (9th) rounding out the counters. Anna Linde (11th) and Gracie Hartigan (15th) placed in the top 15.
Wyatt Tomison (2nd), Jimmy Hartigan (5th), Isaac Esh (7th), and Rusty Armstrong (16th) rounded out the counters with Ian Althoff (17th) cracking the top 20.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team put forth a pair of solid efforts but suffered 3-1 losses, including the league opener against Octorara on Thursday, Sept. 8, and to Eastern York Saturday morning.
Ayden Herr’s goal in the 79th minute prevented the shutout against the Braves while Brady Janssen’s first half goal tied the score in a non-league game against Eastern.

Community Forestry Program Slated
Penn State Extension will offer “Reusing Wood and Renewing People in Community Forestry” on Thursday, Sep. 29, from noon to 1 p.m. The program will livestreamed via Zoom. The program is for public tree, landscape, and environmental board members; municipal managers, foresters, and arborists; and anyone interested in urban and community forestry.
Marc Wilken, director of business and event development with the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, along with collaborating experts at PowerCorpsPHL, Cambium Carbon, and Urban Wood Economy, will discuss Philadelphia’s increase in wood residue and efforts to divert additional residue from landfills. This recovery and reforestation pilot operation includes developing a skilled workforce to prepare and market saleable lumber and wood product line, with a portion of the proceeds being reinvested in tree plantings and forest management across the city. The speakers will seek to demonstrate that novel solutions to reducing wood and landscape waste disposal can be self-supporting and profitable in the right market and that collaboration expertise is available to help develop a stable, skilled workforce among local populations.
Attendees may receive credits from the Society of American Foresters or the International Society of Arboriculture or a certificate of attendance for professionals and others to self-report. The program can also count as a peer volunteer/Master Gardener update training. There is a fee only for those seeking any of these credits.
Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/community -forestry. In addition to the link to access the webinar, registrants will have access to the webinar recording.

The community is invited to attend the latest performance by Encore! Homeschool Productions, a central Pennsylvania Christian homeschool theater troupe. The group will stage the courtroom drama “12 Angry Jurors” on Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 and 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Area Playhouse, 630 Cherry Drive, Hershey.
The play focuses on 12 jury members who must decide whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murder. Eleven jurors initially vote that the man is guilty of the crime and then try to convince the one holdout to change his vote.
The director of “12 Angry Jurors” is Jill Panyard, who has been directing Encore! plays for 18 years. She is also the head of the Theatre Academy at the Hershey Area Playhouse, directing and teaching students in grades one through 12.
“It is a play often performed by high school groups because it stands the test of time,” stated Panyard. “The issues presented, including prejudice ... are relevant today, and they are displayed in real, emotional ways through the lines of the script. Everyone should take the opportunity to see the show.”
“This show is unique compared to other plays in that characters normally come in and go off the stage. For this show, the 12 jurors remain on the set the entire time,” added parent volunteer Tammy Bartlett. “There are no scene changes. In this case, you are in character the whole time. It’s a different dynamic. It is intense and emotions fly.”
Members of the theater troupe represent various school districts in central Pennsylvania. The cast of “12 Angry Jurors” includes Ian Riethmiller of Camp Hill as the judge/guard and Morghan Norcott of Marietta as the foreman. Members of the jury include the following: Josiah Evans of Elizabethtown, Landon Hunsicker of Mechanicsburg, Emily Norcott of Marietta, Lily Patota of Marietta, Giselle Bartlett of Lancaster, Callaghan Petrosky of Lancaster, Emma Riethmiller of Camp Hill, Brock Sunday of Annville, Seth Snyder of Middletown, MaryKate Kenny of Harrisburg and Felicity Younts of Maysville.
Encore! was started in 2001 by Panyard, Debra Bell, Vicki Dincher and a group of moms from the Learning Center homeschool co-op as a way to give homeschool students in central Pennsylvania the same type of theatrical opportunities available that they would have in conventional schools.
Since 2011, Encore! has participated in the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, which recognize local students for outstanding work in a high school play or musical. The troupe has earned 35 nominations, seven honorable mentions and nine Apollo Awards. In May, the troupe won six Hershey Apollo Awards for its production of “The Little Mermaid,” which it performed at The Junction Center, including the award for Best Musical. Several actors also won individual awards for their performances.
Bartlett said that the actors in the group are very passionate about their craft. “We have a very talented pool. (The playhouse is) a great venue for a play, and we have a great group of kids,” she added.
For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.facebook.com/encore homeschoolproductions or www.encorehsp.org. Tickets will also be available at the door. Small concessions will be available during the performances.

“12 Angry Jurors,” a courtroom drama, will be staged by Encore! Homeschool Productions.
