BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The Southern Lancaster County Community Choirs (SLCCC) are seeking singers of all talent levels and age groups as preparations get underway for a Christmas concert.
The SLCCC will hold a show Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Swift Middle School auditorium, 1866 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Ticket information will be announced closer to the day of the event.
For now, the group is focusing on recruitment, and everyone is invited to participate. “Most years we have auditions for the choir, and we allow people to try out and then secure a spot in the choir by their interest and their musical talent,” SLCCC president Jozlyn Grodski said. “This year we are taking a little bit of a different approach in allowing anybody who

The proceeds will benefit recues and nonprofit organizations Angie’s Stray Foundation, LaMancha Animal Rescue, Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue, Wagon Tailz Animal Rescue, Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, Woerth It Hollow, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Leo’s Helping Paws.

Regardless of status or station in life, the Oasis Women’s Ministry can be of assistance, director Jennifer Hatch said.
Oasis will hold a nine-week nondenominational Bible study program for women of all ages on Wednesday mornings that will begin on Sept. 24 and run through Nov. 19 at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.
“Our Bible study is for women who are really looking for connection, to have a break during the busyness of life to come together as women who want to know more about Jesus,” Hatch said.
Every woman is welcome. “We aren’t all from the southern end of Lancaster County,” said Hatch. “We have women

“Those organizations have compiled a wish list of things that the fosters and the rescues themselves use,” said Debbie Casson, the owner and operator of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard. “So we create something called Donation Alley, and we have a flat bed.”
There will be more than 20 vendors on-site. “We have a lot going on during the day,” said Casson. “The rescues and nonprofits will all be in the front lawn. We will have adoptable cats and dogs here that someone can place an application for. Last year, we homed 13 dogs. They’ll all be outside. We will have vendors that’ll be upstairs in the venue, anything from candles to jewelry to home decor, lots of different

are for everyone, no matter their age, background, or goals.
In addition to loaning books, the Quarryville Library Center offers a wide variety of programs, DVD rentals, copying and faxing services, passport services, museum passes, room rentals, and hotspot rentals. Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Extending the Life of Your Garments” by Rachel Siegel on Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster.
The hourlong presentation will explore sustainability through quality craftsmanship and care. Siegel will discuss tips and techniques for garment construction and care that will help garments to last longer.
We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Siegel started in the sewing room at age 4 and developed her skills through 4-H, winning state competitions. She participated in the Make It With Wool contest, winning the adult division of the national contest in 2018 and 2024. She has written several articles for Threads Magazine. Siegel also works as a Certified Public Accountant and sews her professional wardrobe. She enjoys teaching her hobbies to others, both as a 4-H sewing leader in Lebanon County and as a frequent presenter and past president of LASN. There is a fee for nonmembers, which may be paid by cash or check. Guests may register on arrival.

LASN’s 2025 theme is “Sustainability,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic.

LASN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fitting and construction skills related primarily to garment sewing. It meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months, with Zoom meetings held during the winter. Retreats, service projects, and a fabric swap are optional activities. For more information, contact lancastersews@gmail.com.

coming from Maryland and Chester County and York County, even, so we have a broad reach of women from different churches and all ages who like to come together just to study the Bible.”
The program is for both Bible beginners and longtime readers. “We try to make the Bible study something that women who have never done in the Bible study before can also feel comfortable and fit in here, along with women who may have studied the Bible their whole lives,” said Hatch. “There’s a place for everyone to participate.”
Breakfast will be served at 9 a.m., and the group will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

“It’s for women who want to come in and have breakfast and just spend time together, sharing and catching up with each other and building friendships,” said Hatch. “That’s where we start our morning, and then we come together as a big group in the sanctuary to have worship in music. Then we branch off into the small study groups.”
Go to www.oasiswomen .org or call 717-799-8583 to register. Walk-ins will be accepted. A freewill offering will be received each week to “bless the child care workers,” Hatch said. Child care will be provided for youngsters of all ages. “They’re also learning about Jesus and Bible sto -
ries, doing crafts, singing songs, having snacks. The children also enjoy coming here, as well.”
There will be two tracks of study - “The Gospel of John: Savoring the Peace of Jesus in a Chaotic World” by Melissa Spoelstra and “The Gospel of John - Digging Deeper With Your Bible.”
“I think everybody can relate to the subtitle “Savoring the Peace of Jesus in a Chaotic World,” Hatch said. “That is what we want to create here, that this is a place where women can feel replenished, that they can find a place of peace just in the middle of a busy life, whatever that is for them, and have time to experience
peace within whatever life is bringing.”
Hatch stated that the goal is to make a difference in the lives of participants. “We were talking about this as a leadership group,” she said. “Our hopes for this session are for women to have their lives transformed, that they will not leave here the same way that they came, and that we would also be unified though we’re all very different people. Our hope is that we come together, and our focus is on Jesus and that is what unifies us.”
Past participant Jan Bewley said, “One of the biggest blessings was we went through a family

products up there.”
In front, Britain Hill will have a booth. “Our employees get together every year and collect different containers and little unique, antique pieces, and we create succulent gardens,” said Casson. “We put together about 80 to 100 succulent gardens, and we sell them, and 100% of those proceeds go to rescues that day.”
RiverDawg Grooming will provide ear cleanings on animals, and T’s Dog Grooming will perform nail trims with the proceeds going to the charities.
“Probably the most fun thing we do is our doggy kissing booth,” Casson said. “We put the adoptable dogs in the kissing booth so they can meet and greet hopefully their future owner. People can put a dollar in to kiss the dogs, and that’s fun, but really it’s just to
socially acclimate the dogs and get them exposure and hopefully a forever home.”
There will be food trucks and live music by One, a duo that plays Elvis Presley songs and classic rock.
“Obviously, people are welcome to bring their dogs, and they have to be leashed,” Casson said. “It’s a great family day because there’s a lot going on, but it’s also a great day to come out and support and just enjoy the day out and do a little shopping. We’ve got
a good variety of vendors this year.”
Casson said it’s her favorite event to host at Britain Hill. “I love animals,” she said. “I have a rescue. I like to be able to give a platform to the nonprofits who don’t have a brick-and-mortar building so that they can gain exposure to show what their services provide. It allows the community to know a little bit more about them, and they benefit in the proceeds.”

Scam from pg 5
The FBI reports that nearly half of the victims of these scams are over 60 years old, with seniors representing two-thirds of all financial losses. Nationwide, Americans have already lost more than $1 billion to this evolving fraud.
The “Phantom Hacker” scheme unfolds in three stages. An impostor poses as technical support, convincing victims to allow remote access to their computers. Then another impostor posing as a bank representative claims the victim’s accounts have been compromised and directs funds to a “safe” account. In many cases, victims are then contacted by individuals posing as U.S. government officials, who may even send official-looking documents to reinforce the deception.
Recent reports indicate scammers are also leveraging artificial intelligence to make their attacks more convincing, targeting seniors based on personal interests, hobbies, and online activity.

PennCyber encourages families to discuss these scams proactively, educate seniors on the red flags, and remind them to immediately report any suspicious contact. The FBI urges victims to report incidents to their local FBI Field Office and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov.

Barb Musser stated that there are many benefits to the Bible study program. “There’s fellowship with other women, and there’s also very good food,” she said. “There’s great worship as well, and the
teaching is exceptional. We choose Bible studies that are going to minister to the hearts and lives of women in whatever area they’re in, whether it’s work or raising children or being married or being single. We try to meet people’s needs, and the discussion times are really beneficial. We also have a great prayer ministry for women.”

Community Choirs
has a passion for music to be a part of the community choir. We have two different levels of involvement where you can be a part of the crescendo choir, which is our adult choir, ninth grade through adult, or you can be a part of the community choir, which is open to anybody. We’re also doing a children’s choir, which is going to be fourth- through eighth-graders.”
Go to www.slccchoirs .com for more information. “We have two different forms on there,” said Grodski. “One is for the community choir, which includes not only the children’s choir and the adult choir, but also an opportunity for instrumentalists in the area if they would like to be a part of the orchestra.”
SLCCC director Becky Hess said, “Our core choir, Crescendo, has met yearly for 17 years now, and that is the audition group. They’re sort of going to be the core part of this concert, but then we’re going to have the community members that join us to make what we hope will be a mass choir of community members, as well as a children’s choir and an orchestra. This will be a one-time performance.”
The choirs will rehearse at Chestnut Level Presby -
terian Church on Tuesday nights, with the concert and dress rehearsal at Swift. “We’re trying to keep it manageable for folks,” Hess said. “Everyone’s lives are busy, and there’s so many opportunities. They would be committing to essentially five rehearsals and a concert, and we’re hoping that will allow more people to feel like they have the flexibility to participate.”
The SLCCC is opening membership up to everyone as a way to keep things fresh. “Every year, you look for something new to do, to keep it interesting, because many of our choir members have been in the choir for year after year after year, which is a beautiful thing,” said Hess. “But I want to keep it interesting for them. So that’s one reason. The other reason is because I think ever since COVID and the world kind of shutting down, we all sort of value that experience of being with others more than maybe we used to, especially in this community. Our hope was to have another opportunity that first weekend in December - Christmas in Quarryville is on (Dec.) 6 - and I think that has been such a tremendous success. We do not, in any way, want
to compete with that, but what we tried to do was pick the day after that, to sort of keep it all in one weekend, keep the community thinking about the holidays and the spirit of community here in Quarryville.”
Grodski said SLCCC is an ideal opportunity to stay involved with music. “When you’re in school, you have music at your fingertips, you have music class that you’re a part of, you can be a part of band, you can be a part of orchestra, you can be a part of the choir in school,” she said. “After you graduate, there’s not as many opportunities for just a person who enjoys music to find those outlets. If you want to be a professional, Lancaster has great professional opportunities.
I am a mom and I have a full-time job, but music is something that I love, and I want it a way to be able to keep that a part of my life while being able to do other parts of my life. And this community choir has allowed me to do both of those things.”
Musicians are also welcome. “We just had a gentleman who dusted off his clarinet for the first time in a while and played with us this spring, and he was amazing,” said Grodski. “You get
Donations Sought for Solid Rock Capital Campaign
Solid Rock Youth Ministries is raising funds for its capital campaign. Josh and Bethany Foley, who have had multiple generations of their family blessed by Solid Rock, have started an initiative called “Show Up for Solid Rock” to gather

a minimum of 1,000 gifts for Solid Rock by the end of September.
Gifts of any amount will help Solid Rock and show support for its mission. Through the end of September, a donor will match up to $20 for each gift to
the capital campaign.
People can give online at www.solidrockquarryville .com or in person at 104 E. State St., Quarryville. For a contribution to count toward the 1,000 gifts, a name must be associated with any cash donation.
to keep learning and keep growing. I love that music provides us that opportunity, that you’re never done. There’s always something that you can be trying or doing or improving on.”
The SLCCC has members from across the county, including Willow Street, Oxford, Conestoga, and Washington Boro. “If they’re willing to drive, come, we don’t care where they’re from,” Hess said. “There is a huge homeschool base in this area, and I’m hoping we can connect with some of those children and families as well and say, ‘Come and join us.’ This isn’t just a Solanco School District thing or an L-S thing. Anyone is welcome.”
Hess stated, “The theme of this concert is joy. I hope that that’s what this experience will bring for people who are participants. There is such joy in music and in singing and making music with others. And we live in a community that is very tight knit, and so it just seems like a natural collaboration between this community and music and bringing everyone together in the spirit of joy at the holiday season.”

Greystone Manor Sets Annual Horse Show
Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, will hold its 45th annual Horse Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20. With the theme “Blazing the Oregon Trail,” the event will feature the center’s horses and students with special needs who will demonstrate the horsemanship skills they practiced all year. All of the students will be publicly recognized for the skills they mastered. Food and refreshments, as well as GMTRC gear, including T-shirts, will be available at the show. Admission is free, but all proceeds will support GMTRC’s programs. For more information, visit www.greystonemanortrc .org or call 717-615-9222. Since 1981, GMTRC, a nonprofit organization, has been teaching children and adults with special needs how to ride and work with horses. Students experience a variety of therapeutic benefits from their interactions with the horses, including improved strength, balance and coordination, communication skills, processing, improved self-esteem, and life skills for independent living.
Historical Society Sets Program
The Solanco Historical Society will hold a program on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1:30 p.m. at its archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Robert Fulton Highway. Stan White will present “Good Roads in the Southern End in the Teens and Twenties.”
White is the director and former president of the society. His presentation will focus on how several highways in the Southern End were built and paved during the 1920s. The program is free and open to the public.
