COPS Study Will Examine The Life Of Christ “(Change of Pace South) is a unique group of women who are unified because of Jesus, and I love that we are from all different churches and places in our spiritual journeys because we come together for the same goal, which is to grow closer to Jesus,” remarked Laurel Keyer, who attended her first Change of Pace South (COPS) Bible study this past year.

Keyer noted that the weekly meetings offered a safe place to be herself and to grow. “It was nice to connect with women of all ages and know I could bring my needs to the group and people genuinely cared and prayed for each other,” she said. “It’s a refreshing morning to take time out with God and other adult women, and (it was) nice to have good child care so my little one is cared for in a

peaceful environment.”

The fall session of COPS will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and will meet every following Wednesday for 10 additional weeks, concluding with a special celebration on Dec. 4.

Meetings will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.

Supported by the Friendship Foundation, COPS is an interdenominational community women’s group open to anyone, including those completely new to Bible study. Each Wednesday gathering will include breakfast refreshments, a time of worship with music, a video teaching session, and small group discussion. A prayer group will also meet throughout the morning, and women will be welcome to attend at any time.

When Mark Schantzer’s son, Desmond, known as “Des,” died by suicide in 2011, Mark and his family, including wife Debbie and daughter Danielle, were blindsided. “ We didn’t see or know any signs,” shared Mark. “We didn’t have money for a funeral. You don’t think about that cost.”

In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and coordinates the annual Walk for D.E.S., which raises funds to promote suicide prevention and awareness and to aid families who have lost loved ones to suicide. Funds may help pay for counseling in addition to funeral costs. “It depends on the need,”

Some past walks have raised more than $17,000 for the foundation to distribute. Mark said he would like to see the 2019 event raise $25,000. “The more we raise, the more I can give toward a funeral, counseling, a utility bill, or whatever (families) need,” Mark said.

Raising funds, however, is not the most important factor in the Walk for D.E.S., according to Mark. “We bring together 300 to 400 survivors in a space where it’s expected they will talk with others about what happened to

other side. “Too many people see the warning signs and don’t know what to do,” said Mark. “(A person will say), ‘You aren’t going to do anything stupid, are you?’ The friend says, ‘No, I’m good,’ and then they are reading (an obituary) tomorrow.”

Mark encourages everyone to know what to watch for. “Learn the signs and what to do if you see them,” he said. “If you can’t do anything, stick around until you get someone who can help.”

To spread the word about the help the organization offers to families of those who die by suicide, the DES Foundation created a brochure. Mark has distributed the brochures to local coroners, police departments, and funeral homes.

This year’s Walk for D.E.S. will include a 5K walk and run with color at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 14. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., a brief service will be held. “We read a poem and play a song or two … at a tree we planted there in the … park,” said Mark. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. along a flat route that travels into a wooded area.

“It intertwines like a figure eight.

It’s an easy walk,” said Mark, who added that the run with color will occur at the beginning.

According to Mark, the first two walks helped provide funding for the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, which has created awareness cards that list warning signs of a potential suicide on one side and give prevention instructions on the

them,” said Mark, who added that many families attend the walk together. “There will be people hugging and crying,” he said. “It helps everyone get to tomorrow.”

According to professional sewist and Lancaster Area Sewing Network past president Karen Lesley, interest in the home sewing of clothing had declined in the recent past, but it is seeing a surge in popularity.

Home sewing had fallen out of vogue because it is often cheaper to purchase a mass-produced item of clothing. Additionally, sewing is no longer part of the required curriculum in many schools, the number of fabric stores has decreased, and sewing

machine stores have become harder to find. However, design competition television shows that test contestants’ creativity and imagination have served to increase sewing’s popularity.

Also on the positive side is the ever-increasing technology making sewing machines more versatile than ever. For a skill that was traditionally taught to girls by their mothers or grandmothers, now there are online videos for self-education. Online searches can result in detailed instructions for basics such as how to thread a sewing machine to more complex work such as the steps to make bound buttonholes or how to create smocking.

At the Solanco Fair, ribbons and cash prizes are awarded in two divisions - the Senior Division for anyone over age 19 and the Junior Division for anyone ages 8 to 19 who is not a 4-H member.

Entries are judged most heavily on workmanship, with style and choice of materials also contributing to the choice of a winning entry.

“A good entry is just made well. It’s nice and clean, and it should look good on the outside and on the inside,” Lesley said.

Sewing is the first section under Department 18 Needlecraft in the fair premium book. For those who make clothing from their own handmade fabric, there are also opportunities to display crocheted and knitted apparel within Section 2 - Needlework.

Sweaters are the most widely represented classes, but there are also listings for everything from hats to socks. Classes are also available for clothing featuring more specialized skills such as tatting, smocking, needlepoint, and hand or machine embroidery.

LSO, Fulton Theatre Sign Agreement The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced that beginning with its 2019-20 season, it will be in residence at the Fulton Theatre for five seasons. Of its six classic concerts, four or five will be guaranteed to be performed at the Fulton each season.

A craft, vendor, and yard sale will be held at the New Danville Fire Company, 43 Marticville Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Spaces may be reserved for a fee; tables will be provided by the West Willow Fire Company, or vendors may bring their own.

The proceeds from space reservations will be used to fund Pequea Township’s 2020 National Night Out (NNO) event. Township resident Diane Lefever is a member of the NNO planning committee, and she is organizing the sale. She noted that the idea for the fundraiser had been floated before this year’s NNO event, which was held on Aug. 6, but there was not enough time to pull it together. As there are still a few months left in 2019, the committee wanted to host a fundraiser soon to get planning for the area’s third annual NNO event off to a good start.

“We had to buy more things this year, as donations were down,” Lefever explained. “We weren’t sure how much would be left over. This will bolster the fund for 2020.”

National Night Out is promoted by the National Association of Town Watch and is held annually in communities across the country to foster positive relationships between residents and law enforcement members.

“It makes a safer community if you trust the police and the fire company,” Lefever said. “ We care,” added Pequea Township Police Department patrolman Craig Muir. “None of the public safety personnel would be here if we didn’t care about the township and the communities around it.”

Lefever noted that while NNO is geared toward resident/police relationships, the committee has also opted to highlight the fire companies and other first responders

PSECU Supports Hunger Action Month PSECU Supports Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and encourage action to help end hunger.

During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate.

In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.centralpafood bank.org/ham.

To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September.

These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others.

During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. In addition to virtual food drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank.

CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. As a part of the street fair, the public can learn about H.N. Werkman, a printer from the Dutch province of Groningen during World War II, from noon to 3 p.m.

Attendees can also try their hand at creating and printing a keepsake postcard. A salon-style group show of Lancaster printers will take place during the street fair, as well, and the exhibition will include work by Stephanie Hinish, Arthur Padelsky, Ben Williamson, Victoria Duggan, Brianna Maule, Gabby Shelly, Paula Mann, and Henry Gepfer.

The seventh Lancaster Printers Fair will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, in downtown Lancaster. The event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more.

To kick off the two-day event, members of the the .918 Club, which is organizing the fair, will show “Pressing On,” a film about the craft of letterpress printing, on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Candy Factory, located near the club’s Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There is no cost.

The museum also will be open that evening with demonstrations and hands-on activities.

For the second year, three exhibits will be on display that night. Prints by Rebecca Blossler will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, 335 N. The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Will Rogers Follies” from Thursday, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Nov. 6. Featuring showgirls and cowboys, the show is a breezy and stylish biography of the Oklahomaborn humorist, journalist, and friend of presidents.

“Will Rogers Follies” depicts the rags-to-riches story of Will Rogers, who became a multimedia sensation who

touched hearts and minds through a weekly radio talk show, newspapers, and movies. During the 1920s and ’30s, Rogers was a regular headliner in Florenz Ziegfeld’s dazzling show “The Follies,” which featured beautiful women in spectacular costumes. This is the style of the Dutch Apple show.

Between rope tricks, Rogers will charms the audience with old-fashioned, common-sense wit.

For the second time in his career, Michael Santora will portray Rogers.

Santora is from New Orleans and is a graduate of Tulane University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater.

William Young, the son of Willow Street residents Joel and Kristin Young, was 8 when he noticed a yellow warbler in a willow tree. Thanks to the influence of his grandfather, a lifelong birder, William recognized the bird as the species pictured on the cover of the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America.

“I was immediately intrigued,” William recalled. “After finding out more about this bird, I saw the multitude of other species in the guide and realized that birding is a world of possibility. I have never looked back.”

William, who is now 14 and a homeschooled ninth-grader, has been a passionate birder since he spotted that yellow warbler. He enjoys all aspects of birding, but he is especially fascinated by the science of birds. He has developed a strong interest in neotropical ornithology and birding, which he described as fast-paced and fun, and he is excited about the possibility of contributing new information to science in tropical regions.

As many avid birders do, William has maintained a life list of birds. On that list, he tallies each distinct species of bird he spots.

“About a year ago, I found a black-throated grey warbler, a bird that normally resides on the West Coast, at Noel Dorwart Park (in East Hempfield Township). This was a special sighting, as it was the 300th bird on my life list,” he said.

Now, William hopes that he can inspire others to become interested in birding and perhaps add some species to their personal life lists. He is participating in the 2020 Young Birder of the Year contest, which is sponsored by the American Birding Association. As part of the competition, William must develop a project that will improve his community’s understanding or enjoyment of birds or contribute to the conservation of avian life. For his project, William opted to create the Lancaster County Bird-A-Thon (LCBAT), which he patterned off the World Series of Birding that is held annually in

Cape May, N.J. The LCBAT will begin at midnight on Sunday, Sept. 22, and conclude 24 hours later.

Teams of four to eight people will record all of the birds that they spot inside Lancaster County’s borders during those 24 hours. Individuals do not have to be actively birding during all 24 hours, but the number of birds they spot will likely increase with more time spent watching. The teams will contribute an amount of money per bird, with the total amount being divided among the Lancaster County Bird Club, the American Birding Association, and other organizations. Prizes will be awarded to the teams that spot the most species, and the winning team will be able to choose an organization to be a beneficiary.

Anyone interested in birding is welcome to participate in the event, no matter their level of skill or experience. Team captains may register their teams by emailing William at wayoung04@hotmail.com. William would like teams to be registered by Sunday, Sept.

Captain Tate Fisher placed 59th in 18:26, Eller clocked an 18:29 (PR) to

Last Tuesday the Mules hosted Lampeter-Strasburg. Down just 1-0 at the half, Solanco seemed poised to hold off the visitors. The Pioneers, however, rallied for four goals in a 5-1

Solanco opened its league season with a home meet last Tuesday against two of the top teams in the league, Manheim Township and Cedar Crest. That being said, an upset was unlikely but the harrier teams battled none-the-less.

“We ran a fast invitational on Saturday and then came back to race on our hilly course,” stated head coach Craig Ausel. “That’s tough but the teams responded well.”

The girls’ raced first and came out on the short end of a 15-53 result against the Falcons. They lost 17-49 to the Streaks.

Daria Neaves ran a solid 22:04 to finish 10th. Freshman Emma Baxter also broke into the top 20, placing 18th with a 23:22. Nicole Dodson ran third, placing 21st (23:54) with Halle Brown closing in at 23rd (24:09). Chesley Ledesma rounded out the top five with a 25:25 for 32nd place. Stella Woy (26:14), Elaina Kreider (26:25) and Evelyn Billings (28:03) also competed.

Anthony Solis-Morales, with a 12th place finish in 18:02, led the boys with Avery Jacobsen one place and four seconds behind. Nathan Eller followed, placing 19th in 18:48 with Tate Fisher (22nd, 19:04) and Joey Hartigan (26th, 19:33) rounding out the top five.

“Nathan and Tate both had strong races,” said Ausel. “Joey, a newcomer, made a big step in establishing himself as a top five runner.”

shots and goals from this trio,” said Hawkins.

The midfield returns Mylee Smith and talented freshmen Addie Scott and Kate Underwood. “Mylee is one of three captains and keeps everyone pulled together,” said Hawkins, “and the freshmen have a great understanding of the game.

Returning to the defense are juniors Emma Curtis, captain Kaley Wilson and Kayla McCauley. Brooke Smith, a junior, also joins that group.

“As the season progresses, I believe these girls will form a strong defensive group,” Hawkins said. “I believe these ladies can produce offensive results as well.”

Part-time keeper last year, Kimmy Beacham gets the position full time this season.

Solanco’s lone senior is Kierra Laird.

“She is a driving force on offense for us and has improved tremendously since her freshman year,” said Hawkins.

That scoring, however, did not get on

track in Solanco’s 5-1 non-league season opening loss to Kennard-Dale, August 30. A second half stroke opportunity by Stoltzfus put the Mares on the board.

In the league opener on Thursday, Laird’s overtime goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Solanco to a 2-1 victory over hosting McCaskey. The hosts took a 1-0 lead at the half only to see Laird knot the score ten minutes into the second half.

Beacham recorded two saves to put Solanco in the win column.

TENNIS Graduating the bulk of their lineup from last year, the tennis team will show its youth this year but, under veteran coach Rob Walrath, who takes over for Todd Brown, they anticipate a competitive season. Walrath coached both boys’ and girls’ teams at Cortland High School (New York) for 29 and 26 seasons respectively.

The Mares opened the season with a 7-0 non-league win over Columbia on Friday, August 30 before hosting Elizabethtown last Tuesday in the Section Two opener. The Bears prevailed for a 7-0 road win.

Returning player and captain Faith Redcay and freshman Olivia Baker dropped an 8-2 result at No. 1 doubles.

Perla Martinez and Michaela Brenneman battled to an 8-5 loss while Sidney Beyer and Grace Pursel lost 8-1 at No. 3.

At No. 1, Redcay dropped a 6-0, 6-2 singles result. Baker played a tough first set at No. 2, coming up short 6-4 before bowing out 6-1. At No. 3, Martinez suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Araya Fahnestock while Brenneman scored the most games in the set but fell short 6-4, 6-2.

Thursday afternoon the Mares put up some good numbers but fell 6-1 to Cocalico. Beyer, who lost the first set 4-6, was gaining momentum and held a 4-3 lead in the second set when Bethany Elmore was unable to finish, leaving Solanco with one team point.

Redcay and Baker dropped a hardfought 9-8 (7-3) No. 1 doubles match while Benitez and Brenneman were edged 8-6 at No. 2. Brenneman also put up a good fight at No. 3 singles but suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat.

Logan Wagner’s 79 was the lowest score of the day but it wasn’t enough to propel the Mules to a win over Elizabethtown who finished just ten strokes better (395). This was Wagner’s second individual win of the season having a carded a section low 76 at Tanglewood on August 22. He is averaging a 78.75 to date.

“Logan continues to play well and is now the Section Two scoring leader,” noted head coach Greg Minnich.

“We are young but continually see improvement from everyone and the competition within the team to make the 3-6 spots each week is intense.”

Backing Wagner was Andy Teaman who fired a 93, the seventh lowest score of the day. Lucas Boyd, with a 116, and Olivia Lasko, 117, rounded out the top four counters. Greta Plechner (119) and Anna Sexton (123) also competed.

VOLLEYBALL With just two seniors on the roster, the volleyball team will continue to lay the groundwork toward building a successful program.

“We’re looking to keep building this year,” said head coach Meghan Cross.

“We have a very young team again but they have lots of talent and potential.

We’re working on building confidence and trusting one another with a brand new lineup with girls that have not played together yet.”

Senior captain Nathaly Molinarez, Emma Canale, Jada Dow and sophomore setter Madi Davis return as starters and look to anchor the squad. Senior Alondra Quinonez as a defensive specialist and junior captain Maggie Perry returns as the Libero.

The Mares opened Section Two play at Manheim Central last Tuesday night where they suffered a 25-10, 25-14, 25-9 loss.

At the net, Canale put up two blocks and David and Kate Unger each dished out one assist. Defensively, Perry scrambled for seven digs with Davis (4) and Unger (3) combining for seven. The Mares got a balanced effort at the offensive end with Anya Fisher, Cheyanne Cutler, Canale and Davis each recording one assist while Cutler, Natalie Diamond and Dow each put down one kill.

Thursday night’s going was just as tough as the Mares dropped a three set, 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 match against Elizabethtown. Molinarez sparked the offense with two kills and one ace. She also put up two blocks along with Canale and Fisher. Davis added five assists and led with eight digs. Quinonez also recorded five digs.

GIRLS’ SOCCER The Mares are coming off a programbest 7-10-1 record last year and are looking for more of the same this season.

They return a handful of starters, including four year starters Alana Yoder and Gabi Dolan. Yoder, a three-time Section All-Star, led the team in scoring with nine goals and eight assists.

Dolan is a two-time Section Two AllStar goalie and will direct the backfield.

The Mares opened the season with a 3-0 shutout over McCaskey on August 30 and one day later blanked Kennard-Dale 4-zip. Last Tuesday night in Lampeter, the Mares went up against the Section Two Pioneers but came away with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss.

“I thought this was the year to beat them,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “They left everything on the field.”

After a scoreless first half, L-S went in front just seven minutes into the second half. The Mares kept at it, finally knotting the score on a Yoder to Balliet goal in the 55th minute. That momentum, however, did not carry into the extra period as the Pioneers found the game-winner just eight minutes in.

“Solanco should not be overlooked by their opponents this season,” said Pioneer boss Emily Lebo. “If they play other teams with the same tenacity they played with us, I see them winning some unexpected games this season.”

At home on Thursday, Solanco took a 3-0 lead into the second half and survived a determined Penn Manor squad 4-3. The Comets scored on a corner early in the second half to gain momentum. Yoder scored on a 30yard free kick for a 4-2 Solanco cushion before Manor closed the gap with four minutes left.

“It has been over a decade since we’ve beaten a Penn Manor squad,” noted Yoder.

Bedwell found the back of the cage for the opening goal 13 minutes in.

Ten minutes later, the Mares scored twice in the span of a minute. Meg Bailey, in the 33rd minute, beat the keeper with a one-on-one move and one minute later Yoder gave the hosts a comfortable cushion.

Providing a place for children in the ministry makes it easier for parents and grandparents to attend, Hatch noted. “I began bringing my grandson along to COPS two years ago. He can hardly wait for it to begin again,” said Jan Lefever, a small group leader who has been involved since 2003. “He loves his Bible class, the activities, and the friends he’s made.”

Those who preregister or register on the morning of the event to take part in the Walk for Life will receive a T-shirt.

Participants are asked to pay a registration fee or enlist sponsors to support their walk. There will be prizes for those who bring in the highest total of donations.

This year, a flag football tournament has been added for adults, taking the place of the tug-of-war event from previous years. Instead of teams pulling a rope against one another, they will be pulling flags from opponents to “tackle” them.

Field Of Screams To Kick Off Season Field of Screams, 191 College Ave., Mountville, has announced that its 2019 season will kick off on Friday, Sept. 13.

The spooky attraction’s season will continue through Friday, Nov. 15.

Field of Screams features four haunted attractions. Its full-time, year-round team of designers and special effects masters has made a number of changes to the show for 2019. Many new scenes, characters, scares, and special effects have been added for the 2019 season, including a new three-room enclosed hayride scene. The Nocturnal Wasteland attraction has undergone a major renovation, and new trails and scenes have been added.

The typical hours for this position are 6:00am - 5:00pm Monday-Friday with overtime paid after 40 hours weekly. Crane operator is home daily; out-of-town work is rare. Compensation for this position is dependent on qualifications and prior experience.
