L ancaster County ’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. They will circle it five times, making the distance of the
climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. “We’re just trying to carry on the motto that people developed back then to never forget,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “The way we can keep the memories there is to have this once a year.” Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up. Online registration has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event. Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. See 25 Years pg 2 Many firefighters choose to do the climb in their full gear.

Later, he began supervising entries for the Fruits and Nuts division, as well as collecting entries and judging the Apiary division. Now, the longtime farmer and beekeeper, who operates Blue Bell Fruit and Vegetable Market, will serve as grand marshal of the Solanco Fair Parade. “I was surprised that they even nominated me,” Dearolf said, exhibiting his humble personality. “It wasn’t anything I had planned, but I’m Ken Dearolf, parade grand marshal, and Trudy Grove, parade chair, display 2026 proud of the fair, and I’m Solanco Fair books. in New York City.” Yuill helped establish Lancaster’s stair climb 16 years ago to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Bucca. Yuill met Bucca at a training program in New York before Bucca was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. “(Ronald) and his partner were driving out somewhere when they heard what was happening, and they responded to the World Trade towers,” Yuill said. “Him and his partner had just gotten a lady out of the towers when Ronnie went back in (for) somebody else, and that’s when it collapsed.”
Prior to the climb, all of the participants will sit on the field and watch the scoreboard for a “video roll call.” The roll call will call off the names of the p e o p l e t h at d i e d , a nd participants are asked to stand up when the person they are representing is called. Each participant in the climb will be wearing a badge honoring somebody who died on Sept. 11, 2001. “ Yo u t h i n k o f 3 4 3 people, when you start reading their names off, it takes over 20 minutes to do,” Yuill said. “That’s when the enormity of the whole things hits you.”

Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers. “A lot of them do,” Yuill s aid. “ S ome o f them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.” In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states l i k e Ne w Yo r k , Ne w Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. Similar memorial events are held throughout the countr y, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Fire fig hters Found ation. For those unable to attend the event, a donation link is listed on the aforementioned website. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation distr ib utes fund s to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event usually raises around $20,000. “ They always had a counseling services unit, but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they have up

The Southern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce will hold an open house for members of the local business community on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. People may stop in anytime between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. The informal event is designed to give Chamber members, local businesses, and prospective members an opportunity to connect with one another, explore business resources available through the library, and learn more about how the C hamber suppor ts businesses throughout southern Lancaster County. The Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will mark its 13th year on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Middle Octorara Presby ter i an Church and the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church at 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville. The festival celebrates the contributions of settlers in Lancaster from what is now Great Britain. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation is a charitable and educational nonprofit organization established in part to restore and maintain the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church and its attached school room as a historical site. The church dates back to 1754. The schoolroom, a Presbyterian academy, was added to the church around 1880, and it later housed Bart Township High School. The building serves as a historical museum displaying artifacts from the Covenanter congregation, the Middle Octorara congregation, Bart Township High School, and Bart Township.

Since joining the organization in 2021, Murphy has been instrumental in increasing outreach and raising funds to expand the agenc y ’s footpr int ac ro ss a s e ven- co unt y
service area. She has led B B B S S C PA’s s i g n a t u re fundraising events, such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake and O ver the Edge, as well as securing support for major milestone events like the Youth Leadership Summit and the recent 45th anniversar y gala. U nd e r h e r l e ad e rs h i p , the agency has partnered with numerous local corporations and businesses that have helped fund mentoring programs to reach more youths. D u r i n g M u r p hy ’s

“I do it mostly for the kids,” he said. “I’ve been involved in the fair for decades.” He emphasized that the Solanco Fair, which runs from Sept. 16 through Friday, Sept. 18, is unique among local fairs. “ I t ’s a n a g r i c u l t u ra l fair, an old-time fair,” he said. “ T hey don’t have car nival r ides . You go to see the livestock, the exhibits and the commercial exhibits. Businesses from the Southern End have a stand there. You go to visit with friends. There are people I never see except at the fair. It’s a community event.” Grove agreed, noting that she runs into regular fairgoers each year, people she only sees at the fair. “I call them Farm Fair Families,” she said with a laugh. “There are people who come to the fair year after year after year.” Along with the parade,

and profits from the parade are put back into the fair for future endeavors. As grand marshal, Dearolf will ride up front in the parade, accompanied by his wife, Patricia. “Anybody who decorates their float is judged, and the bands are judged, too,” Grove said, adding that winners will receive cash prizes. The parade will end with a steam calliope. “It’s about a 90-minute parade,” Grove shared. “And we get a big crowd.” Dearolf recommended that people arrive early to claim a spot along the parade route, noting that upward of 4,000 people came out for last year’s event. Dearolf actually nominated someone else to be the marshal, but he received the honor this year instead. He’s happy to showcase an event that means so much to the community.

The Millersville Area Historical Society will offer a presentation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. Kenneth Sensenig, an educator and local history buff, will present “ The American Revolution: A Crisis of Conscience in Rural Lancaster County.” His talk will focus on how a rural couple dealt with their ethics in the face of an appeal for assistance during the American Revolution. In 1778, Ephrata-area Mennonite pastor John Baer and his wife, Anna, faced a decision. Wounded Revolutionary War soldiers arrived at the Ephrata Cloister needing nursing care. The Baers faced the dilemma of reconciling their conscience with the complicated dynamics of the situation and the request for help. Their decision to help cost them their lives. Recent decades have brought fresh insight to the story, and last year the Baers received a new level of public recognition. The program will conclude with a question-and-answer period. Sensenig, now retired, served the Mennonite Central Committee as a volunteer teacher in Africa for six years and as a public relations representative in the U.S. for decades. Because of his keen interest in local history, he also spent many years as a board member at Mennonite Life. In college, the Ephrata native studied education, earning a B.S. from Penn State, an M.Ed. from Millersville University and an Ed.D. from Temple University. This hands-on role splits time between the plants, maintenance, and nursery operations. You will be responsible for operating equipment (tractors and skid steers), driving 16’ and 26’ box trucks for local deliveries, assisting in facility maintenance, and participating in the hands-on growing of plants. Horticultural work may include but is not limited to seed collection, propagation, shearing, pruning, and staking of plants. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors and possesses the physical strength to regularly lift 30-35 pounds. The work is seasonal in nature, requiring longer hours in the Spring/Fall and shorter hours in the Summer/Winter. Assistance with weekend duties during the growing season is required, this is a shared responsibility and generally occurs every 3rd weekend.

Organists Plan Hymn Sing The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) will hold its annual hymn sing on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E.
