The Solanco High School marching band wrapped up its three-week band camp on Aug. 25 with a full production preview show and parents’ booster night. The band camp started at the beginning of August and consisted of a rigorous schedule during which students learned drills and music from the program to prepare for the upcoming season.
T he Rotary Club of Lancaster South has moved its location to Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. The change in location is one piece of a larger initiative for the club to diversify its membership and exert a bigger positive impact in the community.“Ifwehave a more diverse club, we have more ideas and can get out into the community more. We would like to see more fundraisers and projects,” said Rotary Club secretary PJ Roberts. The club formerly met at Oak Leaf Manor in Millersville, and Roberts noted that Meadia Heights has been very accommodating to the club’s vision of Theexpansion.Rotary Club serves the Lampeter-Strasburg, Penn Manor and Solanco school districts and provides a $1,500 scholarship annually to a graduating senior from each high school. Last year, the club provided a $5,000 grant to the Hans Herr House for repairs being made to its smokehouse, and this year it granted $5,000 to the Loft Community Partnership for the purchase of a freezer. Previously, the Rotary Club hosted a magic show at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, but it was discontinued due to the amount of work required to operate it and the lack of growth in the event. The largest yearly fundraiser for the Rotary Club is the sale of funnel cakes at the West Lampeter Community Fair. The club will also hold a “poker run” at the Lancaster HarleyDavidson, 308 Beaver Valley Pike, Willow Street, on Sept. 10. Participants will draw three cards at the first location and acquire more cards at three separate checkpoints throughout the event. At the end of the ride, the rider with the best hand will be awarded the prize. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event, and the activity will kick off at 9:30 a.m. Roberts, the owner of an autobody shop on Columbia Avenue, has been a member of the Rotary Club for 18 years. “I was in a networking group to make connections throughout the community, but was looking for a way to give back,” Roberts said. “Someone introduced me to the Rotary Club, and I realized it aligned with my goals. I love helping out and seeing the club grow; it’s satisfying to see what we give back to the community.”

The theme of the show is “Hear, There and Everywhere: The Music of the Beatles.” The show includes a variety of pieces inspired by the rock band’s discography, from “Magical Mystery Tour” to “Blackbird” and closing with “Hey Jude.” “My primary goal is to find a program that will be a challenge visually and be a challenge to play, but is still accessible to the kids and the audience at the same time,” said band director Scott Weyman.

Debbie and Tiffany Shrom of Debbie’s School of Dance have been introduced to the program to blend elements of dance with the traditional elements of color guard. “My vision for years has been to combine those two elements. We’ve always leaned in that direction, but this is the first year that we’re actually incorporating it,” said Weyman. “The process has worked seamlessly. (717) 442-4116 Fax (717) 442-4788 BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will participate in a clothing drive in partnership with Danita’s Children to support communities in need in Haiti. The church will collect donations until the end of September in the form of clothing and monetary contributions, and will it post an Amazon wish list for other specific items that areAscensionneeded. Lutheran Church first began supporting Haitian communities with mission trips in 2007 and started a program to assist Haitian students as they attended college in the United States. “The program was something we really felt called to do through the church,” said Kelly Moore, a member of the church and organizer of the clothing drive. “Education is so important, and it’s so hard for them to get. The whole idea of the program was to support students so they could in turn support their own communities.”
The first beneficiary of the program was Marie-Claire Charles, who studied at Millersville University from 2009 to 2014 and went on to earn her master’s degree in business administration. She returned to Haiti in 2020, where she became the director of operations for Danita’s Children. “Marie-Claire Charles is exemplary of the student program’s goal to help students support their communities,” said Moore. “She began organizing the clothing drive and enlisted Ascension’s help. She’s doing really good work,” Two other students have received educational assistance through the program in addition to Charles; however, Moore noted that the church has been unable to continue many of its endeavors in recent years due to COVID-19. “We’ve veered away from hosting students but want to become involved again. We hope this is the first of many partnerships with Danita’s Children,” said Moore. Danita’s Children is an organization with the goal of caring for and supporting impoverished and orphaned children throughout Haiti by assisting with educational, physical and emotional needs. Although headquartered in the village of Ouanaminthe in the northeast region, Danita’s Children provides nutritional, medical and dental care throughout the country. The organization was founded by CEO Danita Estrella-Watts, who first visited Haiti on a mission trip at the age of 11. She returned 25 years later with modest financial support from her church and the goal of caring for those in need throughout the country. Danita’s Children now includes a home for over 80 orphaned children, a pediatric medical care center and a feeding program that provides over 16,000 meals monthly. For more information or to donate to the drive, contact Kelly Moore at children.org.Children,learnlmoore@comcast.net.kellyTomoreaboutDanita’svisitwww.danitas

“It was a great way to test our race preparation and to start making the switch from summer training mode in a low-pressure way,” said head coach Andrew Musselman. “This will help us determine the type of work we need to prioritize over the next two months. We are excited about the season and look forward to more chances to race.”

A strong supporting cast of family, friends and alumni gathered at Solanco to help the harrier teams kick off the season with a scrimmage against Conestoga Valley, Pequea Valley and Octorara on Aug. 27.
“The event and the scrimmage was the best attendance we have ever received,” said alumni association board member Craig Ausel. “We have received $2,500 in scholarship support so far and still have plenty of business and individual signs available for sponsorship. If we receive more in the weeks ahead, we might be able to increase the number of student-athletes receiving scholarships next spring. We are so very thankful to all who have responded.”

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited. The event will include a Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society educational and historical display, as well as a vintage Ford truck in the Pennsylvania Railroad livery from Ken Briers. At 11 a.m., Marino J. “Joe” Acri III will present on the Pennsylvania Railroad G5’s locomotive and backup service with commuter trains. Retired CSX engineer Dominic “DJ” Arlia will speak at 1 p.m. about his experiences working for the railroad, his model railroading hobby, being a licensed drone pilot, and his YouTube videos. In addition, Frank Crowe will create and exhibit works at the museum on Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Crowe is one of four artists-in-residence who will be hosted at the museum in the coming months in cooperation with the American Society of Railway Artists. The other artists are Gil Bennett, Ken Muramoto, and Nadine Charlsen. Crowe began watching trains at an early age, took up drawing and painting them and, as a result, earned a scholarship to the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, Crowe worked briefly for several railroads, and today he is a senior designer for a large carpet manufacturer. His work allows him to travel, shoot railroad photography, and paint. He has photographed trains in the 48 contiguous United States and in all but one Canadian province.Bennett will visit the museum on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23. He has had a passion for trains since age 2. Classically trained, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in architecture and fine arts. A self-described “rivet counter,” he makes sure his subjects are rendered as accurately as possible. Bennett’s works in oil and watercolor are collected and commissioned by individuals worldwide and may also be found on calendars, cards, and book covers.

numerous awards in communityCharlsenshows. will visit the museum on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Sunday, Dec. 4. She is an urban landscape watercolor artist with a flair for trains and industrial sites. From her extensive background as a theatrical lighting designer, she incorporates light, shadows, scale, colors, and textures into her work. While Charlsen paints all things related to the railroad industry, she said she particularly enjoys the challenge that capturing steam engines presents, as their workings are exposed and need to be portrayed accurately. The American Society of Railway Artists, formed in 2013, encourages the depiction of railroading past and present through art. The society counts both noted and emerging railroad artists among its members and presents a variety of opportunities annually for those who love art and railroading to come together.Additionally, a Railroading Merit Badge Workshop has been set for Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for boys and girls ages 11 to 17. The workshop will feature a variety of railroad-themed activities, including equipment tours, demonstrations, and a G-scale model railroad simulation. All badge requirements will be fulfilled in a single day. There is a cost.
