Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro, the Spring Swing has grown steadily in both attendance and impact. Lancaster Downtowners is a community of seniors that fosters independence, social connection, and lifelong learning, in part through its Just One Call volunteer program, which helps members with everyday needs like transportation, home maintenance, and technology. Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ

HARTZ Physical Therapy recently presented a $12,500 check to Lancaster Downtowners, a local nonprofit that supports older adults in Lancaster city in living independently while staying socially connected and engaged. Founded by HARTZ PT physical therapists and golf enthusiasts Daulton

Garden from pg 1 birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying

members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea

that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea. Nine s ubcommi tte es support the structure and work of the club. “Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil. “We try to get everyone involved. It’s not just an observation program. “Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. We’d like to get other people interested.” The club meets monthly at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal C hurch, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public. “When I became a retiree, I was able to spend more

time gardening and developing more perennials,” said Heil. “As we get older, we have to evaluate what we can do and we can’t do.” T he garden club was established in 1947. Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated

for and explored the beauty of gardening. “In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club in Lancaster County,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning, new mem-

bers had to be approved. B oard members would come out to see if the new members’ gardens were worthy of the club.” For additional information, go to https://womens g a rd e n c l u b o f l a n c a s te r county.com.

franchise since the organization’s inception 21 seasons ago. While banners have been hung and players have come and gone, the sturdy Cylo has been one of the Stormers’ few constants. “Cylo is named after Cy Young,” said Davis. “His full name is Cyloicious L. Stormer and has been that since the Stormers first debuted in 2005. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet Cylo. You know where to find him.” Outside of Penn Medicine Park, Cylo makes dozens of local appearances each year. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities. “I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.” “Cylo is very easily recognized in the Lancaster area,” concluded Davis. “When traveling downtown, we often receive honks from passing cars and we are frequently stopped for pictures. Cylo is very extroverted and outgoing. He can be a bit mischievous if left unsupervised, so he always travels with a handler.” For additional information, go to www.lancaster stormers.com.

Prevention from pg 1 executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” T h e o r g a n i z a t i o n ’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street

Pike, Lancaster. This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda w ill feature four onehour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be

Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. Interested individuals can register for the Suicide Prevention Conference at https://tinyurl .com/5n6hjpdy. “We want to bring everyone to gether and g ive them the tools to see what prevention looks like,” said McDevitt. “It’s a lot of community building too. It’s a very difficult subject matter, but people come together to talk about solutions. Like, ‘What could we be doing differently? What

could we be doing better?’ No single organization can prevent suicide; it takes a community.” More than 270 individuals are expected to attend the conference, including health care and mental health care professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people connecting and talking about a very difficult topic. I see people walking away EPHRATA

with hope. Conversations continue beyond the conference. We have made progress with the stigma, but there are too many people still struggling in silence. It gives people insight and motivation, and they walk away with tools they can use right away.” In 2025, a total of 87 L ancaster County res idents were victims of suicide, the highest total since 2012. This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is ver y complicated,” said McDevitt. “Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced a redirection of the stigma.

Many folks still don’t know the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of LancasterLebanon Counties oversees the suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The organization, which employs six full-time staff members and six part-time staff members, has been operating for more than 70 years. “We’ve been around for a very long time,” said McDevitt. “A lot of people know us as ‘MHA.’ We’ve always been known for education, advocacy and support, and now I think we’re going deeper.”

Hospice & Community Care’s Labor Day Auction will return for its 42nd year on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 7, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Presented by Rodgers & Associates, it will take place at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. The Labor Day Auction will include fresh Amish-made food, hundreds of auction items, six specialty auctions, giveaway drawings, and the opportunity to win a 2026 Chevy Trax. Specialty auctions on Sept. 5 will include an art auction, featuring original works by well-known local artists, such as Suk Shuglie, P. Buckley Moss, Freiman Stoltzfus, and Lynne Yancha. During the day-of-care auction, a purchase of a specific amount will provide a full day of care for a hospice patient. Activities on Sept. 5 will also include a plant auction, showcasing hundreds of plants donated by local greenhouses and florists, and a tool auction, featuring new and gently used power and hand tools donated by construction companies and community members. On Sept. 7, the specialty auctions will include a sports memorabilia auction, featuring collectibles from regional, state, and national sports legends; a quilt auction, featuring hand-made Amish quilts, quilts crafted by volunteer groups, and gently used quilts in a variety of styles and sizes; and the continuation of the plant auction. In addition, a high-end auction will offer luxury vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, handcrafted items, and experiences. Throughout its history, the Labor Day Auction has grown through the generosity of local businesses, donors, volunteers, and the Amish community. This year, the event is supported by more than 80 sponsors. All proceeds will go directly to helping Hospice & Community Care provide hospice and palliative care services, as well as grief support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, to patients and families throughout the region. Last year, the Labor Day Auction raised more than $1 million. Admission and parking are free. For complete details, visit www.labordayauction .org or call 717-295-3900.
