Weyman said “Aquarius” signifies newness, and he affectionately refers to “Happy Together” as a “sappy love song.” “As I started putting these musical elements together, (the students) were getting more and more excited,” he said. The songs must follow a logical thread. “You’re looking for things that will fit together thematically and make sense as you transition from one end to the other,” said Weyman. Equally as important, the show should test the band’s skills. “Can we find arrangements to challenge us with specific things that I’ve pulled out of the curriculum from the year before and what I know about the new kids who will be joining us?” he said. “Aquarius” poses time challenges, and “Happy Together” is a swing song, which the band members need to be capable of playing, Weyman stated. “‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ is a
ballad, which is a risk, especially on a football field, and requires good technique, which is needed for concert band,” he added. “‘Never My Love’ has a challenging and interesting syncopation and high level of difficulty. That’s part of how we stay engaged throughout the course of the season.” Weyman noted that the show has to satisfy the curriculum and be visually appealing. Weyman was struggling to find a name for the program when one of the students tr ying out for the color guard said, “This music is all different colors of love.” In addition to football games, the Solanco marching band will perform at three showcase festivals through the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition (PAMBC): Saturday, Sept. 20, at Manheim Township; Saturday, Oct. 11, at Penncrest; and Saturday, Oct. 25, See Band pg 5

back to when the Amish attended public schools, in addition to what Barry calls “priceless artifacts.” “One of my favorites is a Bible that a guy carried throughout the Civil War,” Barry said. “Many of the people that settled here had Scottish-Irish roots, and they all kind of tied in with all these Presbyterian churches that you had in this area.” Barry said one of his favorite parts of the event is the Haggis Ceremony, which honors the Scottish delicacy. “The person who does a ceremony cuts the haggis and presents it another member of the ceremony who gets to taste a haggis, and then he also gets a shot at scotch. He normally says, ‘The haggis is good, and the scotch is good.’ Then you have to pay the piper.” Foundation board member Jonathan Welch said, “I think (the festival) is a tangible link to people’s individual heritage. When you’re asking yourself where do I come from, and what is the culture and the heritage associated with that? I think that’s also a big draw. And to kind of link that up with things to do makes it enjoyable. You can be studious in your search for your family history, but then also kind of enjoy the other side of it as well.” “ The whole festival began with the idea to help raise funds,” John said. “Everything we’re doing is to help raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the (Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian) church and museum.” The foundation has funded numerous projects, including the stabilization of the building, and most recently painting the outside of the church.

Solanco 4-H Community Club members participated in a variety of activities this year. The club’s season ran from March to July. At the March meeting, club members signed up for various projects and received information about the club’s activities for the year. At the April meeting, Lisa Sanchez from Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation presented a program on edible plants. In the May meeting, the club members switched between two stations where they made cloud slime and decorated coin b a n k s . Me m b e r s we re asked to collect change in their banks for purchasing items to send to hurricane victims in North Carolina, which was the club’s com-
munity ser vice project. C lub members brought their filled banks to the June meeting, which also featured a paint night with Jenny Steffy from Penn Manor. Steffy provided a step-by-step guide to creating a sunset painting. The club showcase was held at the July meeting to wrap up the season. Members brought their completed projects and books to be judged by the project leaders. The meeting also included a dessert social, and members were encouraged to enter their projects in the Solanco Fair and the West Lampeter Fair. Anyone interested in participating in 4-H in 2026 may contac t the county 4-H office at 717-394-6851.
