Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church will once again share and revel in Scottish culture with the Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The yearly celebration will feature a variety of events and informational offerings centered around Scottish history and culture, as well as Scottish immigrants and their role in American history. The festival will be held at the Middle Octorara Church campus, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. Attendees of the festival will have an opportunity to experience games and activities such as the “caber toss”, Scottish dancing and a bagpiping contest, where bagpipers perform before a panel of judges and have a chance to earn medals. The event will also feature a traditional haggis ceremony; information will be provided on the unique dish as it is served with Scotch whiskey. Before the end of the festival, a re-enactment of the Octorara Declaration of 1743 will occur, in which participants portray the day that Covenanters first gathered to deem King George II an unfit and ungodly ruler and take up arms. Each year, multiple descendants of Scottish clans attend the festival and set up stands to hand out information on their background and sell handmade goods. Vendors will offer both Scottish and American cuisine for purchase.
The Solanco cross-country teams will kick off the 2022 season with a home scrimmage against Conestoga Valley, Pequea Valley and Octorara on Saturday, Aug. 27. That is also the date of the Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association’s ninth annual Coach Lee Rhodes and Coach Art Harrington Scholarship event. This event features a kids’ fun run at 6 p.m. and an alumni race at 6:15 p.m. after the varsity team races, and it concludes with a See Cross Country pg 2 Fallen

Former coaches, alumni and current board members gather to support Solanco cross-country.
The church, which is the known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America, first began hosting the festival nine years ago as a means to raise money for the maintenance and restoration for the historic property. Proceeds benefit the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation and various projects such as reworking old, hazardous wiring in the building and restoring the church to its state in 1880. “The Covenanters were different in that they brought their pastors directly from Scotland and played a huge role in the Revolutionary War,” said former Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation president Barry Girvin. “They derived their name from the many covenants that were broken by the British to make Presbyterianism the state religion. They came to America fleeing persecution and opposing the monarchy, so it was logical that they would become involved with the revolution.” Girvin curates the school room museum, which is attached to the old church. The museum houses a collection of church materials and artifacts from the early days of the church, as well as a plethora of old documents and photographs from the many one-room schools that used to dot the landscape. Festival attendees will be able to tour the old church and museum, as well as access archived information and research their genealogy. “People who have relatives or ancestors that attended one of the old schools in the area can look up old pictures and information,” said Girvin. “Anyone is welcome.”Formore information or to purchase tickets, festival.com.www.covenanterscottishvisit ADvertiser family picnic. Opportunities to sponsor a scholarship sign for a minimum donation for the 2022 season are available. This year businesses are invited to sponsor a sign as well. Signs can be designed to share the company name, logo and contact information. All signs will be displayed at home cross-country and track“Wemeets.award one Coach Lee Rhoades Cross-Country Scholarship (each to a boy and a girl) and one Coach Art Harrington Cross-Country and Track Scholarship (each to a boy and a girl) with the goal of being able to award four total scholarships,” said Craig Ausel, alumni association board member. A total of $2,500 in scholarship money was awarded last year. The cross-country teams will host Cocalico on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and will be home against Elizabethtown on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Participants in the memorial will scale the steps of the stadium as they wind around its interior five times, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each participant traditionally carries an image of a first responder who was killed on the day of the attack as he or she endures the long climb. “Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.” Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11. Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of “Theduty.stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad.Toregister for the event or contribute to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, visit

While the fall sports teams practices officially got underway on Aug. 15, the golf team was already busy competing. It opened Section Two action on Aug. 11, picked up some nonleague play at Meadia Heights on Aug. 15, and competed in its second league match one day later. The results leave the Mules tied with Warwick at 7-1 in Section Two. The Warriors move from Section One to Section Two this season and are predicted to be a frontrunner. Solanco is the defending Section Two champ. The Warriors hosted the league opener at Overlook Golf Course and led the pack with a 347. Solanco followed at 356, with E-town (367), CV (397), and Ephrata (400) rounding out the section. Logan Wagner’s 79 was one stroke behind Warwick’s Elle Overly, who was the low medalist with a 78. Brayden Herr (85), freshman Luke Herr (95), and Anna Sexton (97) rounded out the counters. Wyatt Landis (98) and Nathan Tucker (99) also“Itcompeted.wasgood to have all six players score under 100,” noted head coach Greg Minnich. “We accomplished that last year twice. We still have room for improvement and need to do that in order to challenge Warwick. Luke Herr played well in his first high school tournament.” At Meadia Heights on Aug. 15, Solanco finished 20 strokes behind Lampeter’s 307. Wagner (72), B. Herr (78), Landis (85), and Sexton (92) accounted for the Mules’ 327 team score. L. Herr (92), Tucker (93), and Hudson Brown (94) also competed. “The team competed well on a tough course,” said Minnich.

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” said Terry. Not long after that conversation, Terry made the hourand-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’”Terrydecided to start a group locally, so he drove from See Veterans pg 13

The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Due to a conflict, the meeting on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be held at Westlake Village, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The breakfasts are free for veterans and spouses. Attendees begin arriving at 7 a.m. Those who wish to reserve a space at any of the breakfasts may call 717-9290310. Individuals with questions may call Terry at 717-435-6095. Terry generally says a few words at the breakfast, which opens with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. Presidents of chapters of military organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who attend may get up and speak, and sometimes a speaker is scheduled. When a group of veterans who traveled to Vietnam returned, Terry asked them to share about their experience at the breakfast.

According to Terry, most of the attendees are Vietnam War veterans. “We had three or four World War II vets who have passed away,” he noted, adding that some Korean War veterans have attended and that he is starting to see veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We had reservations for 72,” he said at the July 16 meeting. “But we get from 90 to 120, so we set up for 90 today.” “We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase.
