Heir Apparent

Solanco’s Starting Quarterback Will Carry On Family Tradition

Chad Sensenig was Lampeter-Strasburg’s quarterback when the Pioneers played their first game in their current stadium back in 1989.

When the 2025 football season opens on that field Friday, Aug. 22, Chad’s son, Chase, will be the starting signal caller for Solanco when the Mules and Pioneers meet in the Milk Jug rivalry game.

“There will definitely be a lot of memories flooding back,” Chad said. “It’s going to be a tremendous feeling, just to watch your son out there competing on the same field where I did.

I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great game.”

Chase is carrying on a family

tradition that started with his grandfather Jack Sensenig, a 1967 Solanco graduate. Jack was the QB

on the first Mules football team to post a winning record when he helped the squad to a 6-4 season in

Traci Frantz’s first book is both a tribute to her late daughter, Tiffany Frantz McGhee, and a cautionary tale, warning of the dangers of carrying a cell phone on your body.

Traci, a Quarryville native, penned “With Courage and Grace”

and self-published through Amazon in March. The book is available on Amazon in hardbound, paperback, and ebook.

Tiffany was diagnosed with breast cancer on Jan. 4, 2012, and succumbed to her illness on Aug. 28, 2021, after bravely battling it for nearly a decade. While Tiffany was sick, Traci updated her condition on

Church Yard Sale Will Benefit Special Needs Ministry

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church will hold its fifth annual outdoor yard sale Saturday, Aug. 30, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church parking lot, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The rain date will be Saturday, Sept. 13.

Spaces that are 10 feet by 10 feet are available for rent. Vendors should bring their own tables. Pre-registration is appreciated, but vendors may register on the morning of the event. For more information or to reserve a space call the church at 717-786-3402 or Dan Henry at 717-381-9947.

Henry said there is expected to be more than 100 tables with items such as household goods, tools, games, puzzles, clothes, and toys.

“We do get quite a variety of items,” Henry said. “Because we have so many different items here, there’s pretty much something for everyone who’s interested in yard sales. It is a huge, huge yard sale, and then we also have good food.”

Breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, baked goods, and beverages will be sold.

All the proceeds from the event will benefit Joyfully Made Fellowship, a ministry for people with special needs.

“We got involved with Joyfully Made partially because their students come to our vacation Bible school every summer,” Henry said. “That’s a real blessing to us. The other students

1965. He was the school’s Athlete of the Year in 1967 and was inducted into the Solanco Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

Chad, a 1991 L-S grad, was the Pioneers’ football field general in 1989 and 1990. He also excelled in baseball, going on to play at Millersville University and being honored as the 2023 Lampeter-Strasburg Distinguished Baseball Alumnus. Chad was enshrined into the Lampeter-Strasburg Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

Chase stated that having his father and grandfather in their respective schools’ halls of fame does not add any additional strain. “I don’t feel like it adds pressure for me,” said Chase, who is beginning his junior season. “I feel like it gives me a sense of pride to be out on the field and gives me another reason to play and another thing to look forward to as soon as I get onto the field, just carrying on the legacy that has been passed down to me.”

When Chase started playing football at the lowest Midget level, it was natural that he lined up behind center. “I wanted to play quarterback,” said Chase. “I felt like that was a position I liked the most. That was position I was comfortable

in. It was a position that I was taught at a young age and all the way up, mentality wise, physicality wise, and just in every way possible.”

Jack said the triple option offense Chase will operate is like the one he ran when he played, but it’s a different game now. “Chad and Chase are both better athletes than I was,” Jack said. “We’re talking different eras. They had different training. Chase is in the weight room all the time. We never had the weight room. I went from football to basketball to baseball. You can’t play three sports anymore in this world.”

Chase has not viewed video of his father playing but has read newspaper clippings. “I do see similarities in his athleticism, but Chase has some abilities that I did not have, and that has a lot to do with his vision of the field,” Chad said. “That was noticeable when he played in Midget football. He understands the game, and he can see the field, and he can read the defense better than I ever could.”

The Sensenigs do share one thing in common in addition to their last name. They all wore No.

14. “I had that number all the way through Solanco sports,” Jack said. “Chad picked up on it and we passed it to Chase. He had no choice.”

“I like wearing number No. 14,” Chase said. “It’s just another layer of passing down the tradition, playing quarterback, wearing the No. 14, going out there playing for my family, friends, and everybody around me.”

Lampeter-Strasburg did not have a varsity football team when Jack was attending Solanco, and the Mules and Pioneers did not play while Chad was the L-S starter. Chad is still a Pioneers’ fan when they’re not facing Solanco. “I pay attention to L-S athletics, and they have a tremendous program up there,” he said. “They do a terrific job. Obviously, now, I won’t be rooting for them, but they’re always in my heart somewhere as a graduate.”

Solanco was 5-5 last year and returns a strong nucleus. “Definitely, there’s a lot of high expectations,” said Chase. “Everybody wants to win the first game. Everybody wants to compete. Everybody wants that district title; everyone wants to win states. Everybody wants all these things, but we all have to compete for it, and we all have to work hard and play as a team.”

QB last season and did see varsity action, including one start at Cocalico. He threw for 97 yards and rushed for a TD in a loss at Conrad Weiser. Chase came on to replace injured Austin Jarabak and led the Mules to a 33-7 triumph over Manheim Central, passing for 60 yards and two TDs and rushing for 69 yards and a score. He threw for 137 yards against Cocalico and added a rushing TD.

Chase fractured his ankle during a Mules’ baseball game this spring but recovered in time for fall practices. “It took a lot of mental toughness getting through the injury, physical therapy, getting back into the weight room and lifting like I used to before I broke it,” he said.

Chad added, “I had the privilege of coaching most of these young men (in Midget football). I’ve seen them come up through the ranks and have seen how they’re coming together as a team and see how hard they’ve been working. This year there are high expectations for this team, and they know it, and they’re coming together. I’ve always preached that hard work equals confidence equals success, and I really feel as though that could be true this year, but that remains to be seen, and when they get out on the field, we’ll find out.”

Chase was the reserve

Chase is keeping things simple as he prepares for the season. “I just like coming out here with all my teammates, just playing, having fun, and hoping to win the games,” he said. Jack became nostalgic as he stood in the bleachers in Solanco’s football stadium recently, looking out over the same field he played on 60 years ago. He couldn’t help but notice the changes that have taken place. “The visitor’s side was where the home side is now,” he said. “Of course, there were no lights, so we played every Saturday afternoon and always had that good old country air blowing.”

On Aug. 22, he will watch his grandson lead his alma mater against his son’s former team. The following week, Chase will make his home varsity starting debut when Solanco welcomes Octorara.

“I’ll tell you what, I’ll have probably more butterflies than he will,” Jack said, his voice cracking with emotion. “It’ll be something, something I’m really looking forward to. For him to be out there on that field and going out there under center, just keeping my fingers crossed and saying, ‘Hey, get ’er done.’ There will be a lot of butterflies.”

CaringBridge. “I was getting questions from family and friends how Tiffany was doing,” Traci said. “Instead of having to repeat it a thousand times, I just decided to set up a CaringBridge journal, and then that way, everybody would be able to access that and read what happened that day.”

The CaringBridge updates became Traci’s notes for the book. “I said in the journal entries that one day I should put this into a book,” she said. “Then I thought I can’t do it yet, because I don’t know what the outcome is going to be. It wasn’t until after she passed that I got serious about thinking about it. Then it was about three and a half years until I could actually mentally, emotionally, and psychologically begin that process of doing it. I started at the beginning of this year, putting everything together and editing it myself.”

Seeking an editor, Traci was introduced to Shawn Smucker through a friend whose dad had written a book. “Shawn was instrumental in helping me get this published, because I had no idea where to start. I’ve never done anything like that.”

Traci stated that “With Courage and Grace” is important because it’s “both educational and a leisure read.”

Traci noted that Tiffany kept her cell phone in her bra for about 12 hours a day for five years. Traci believes that’s what caused Tiffany’s cancer. “That’s where her tumor was, directly under where she stored her cell phone,” Traci said. “She had gone through the genetic testing, and there was absolutely no genetics involved in her cancer. My husband (Bob) and I just said it has to be the cell phone. I did some research on the technology of cell phones, and said this has to be because of electromagnetic radiation, the heat. It destroys cells. And when your cells are damaged, that causes cancer. I ended up starting to be a little bit more vocal about the dangers of cell phones and storing them on your body.” The family has appeared on various media outlets, including Dr. Oz and Inside Edition.

Traci hopes young people will heed her warning. “The people that get the most out of it, that should be reading it, are older teenagers and young adults,” she said. “I’ve had a few cancer patients that have read it and said it was just absolutely amazing. It helped them through their cancer treatments, knowing that what they were feeling or experiencing was not abnormal, that they were normal. I think that that’s extremely helpful.”

“With Courage and Grace” is also a way to honor Tiffany. “Tiffany was an amazing, amazing person,” said Traci. “She was a hard worker. She worked through every single one of her treatments, very rarely skipped a day of work, even with side effects. She handled it with humor. She was so funny. Sometimes she meant to be, and sometimes it just happened, but she was an amazingly funny person. Everybody admired her. She never complained in public, and she always had a smile. She was such an inspiration to people. She never wanted anybody to pity her. That was the last thing she wanted. She didn’t want anybody to treat her any differently because of her cancer.”

The book is also for those with an ill loved one. “I wrote it as more of a book for caretakers or for those who just need to read about somebody else going through

the same thing, because they’re not alone in their journey,” Traci said. “There are so many takeaways. I’ve had so many people say what they have gotten out of the book, and you can take away so many different things, depending on what you’re going through at the time, what you have been through, what you’re seeing someone else go through.”

In commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Traci will hold a book signing on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Frogtown Cafe, 684 Marticville Road, Pequea. Traci suggests that books are pre-purchased through Amazon and brought to the signing. A limited number of paperback and hardbound books will be available for purchase at the signings via cash or Venmo. Anyone interested in hosting a book signing can contact Traci at frantzfamily3@ gmail.com.

Investing in Women’s Futures

Callie Tomblin’s title may be program coordinator for Second Grace, but she’s actually an investment adviser. She’s helping her clients invest in themselves.

“I really believe in the social capital theory, where if

people don’t have resources that many of us take for granted, they are kind of behind,” she said. “A lot of the women in our program are in that situation.”

Second Grace pairs young single mothers - “Graces”with trained advocates called “Sages.” Each Sage helps a

Yard Sale from pg 1

get to interact with the special needs students, and the special needs students are just a joy to be around. We just love them to come and participate with us. We know that

Tami Shaub and her helpers just do an excellent job with that ministry, and our church feels a desire and a calling to support them and participate with them.”

Grace navigate life, whether that’s providing transportation to appointments or getting a Grace connected to community services like food banks or GED classes. Sages might also just spend time with their Grace in a positive way, socializing and offering connection.

There are currently eight women in the Second Grace program, which focuses on women between the ages of 18 and 25, although the organization will accept Graces outside of that age range depending on the circumstances.

Tomblin, who is pursuing a master’s degree in social work, said the program coordinator position appealed to her because she wants to make a difference.

She came on board in May, and she’s excited about the goals she’s set for herself.

“Because we’re a nonprofit, there is so much we want to achieve, but it’s not always easy,” she shared. “My main goal right now is to get the program a vehicle, because over half of our girls don’t have transportation. Maybe we can teach the girls how to drive and also try to get vehicles for these girls. Not

having reliable transportation is a struggle in Lancaster. It’s difficult for these girls to get to jobs or child care without transportation.”

Tomblin’s role also includes applying for grants, which she is currently in the midst of doing as she looks for a donated vehicle.

“This program isn’t like anything I have ever seen before, and I think it’s a program that’s really needed,” said Tomblin, noting that many of the women in the program are completely on their own. “I was telling someone the other day, ‘If I ended up homeless tomorrow, I would have 10 people who would take me in, but these girls don’t have that.’

They don’t have that support system.”

She compared Second Grace to programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters for the social supports it provides. “Many of these women are just now entering adult life and the workforce, and they don’t have any help or resources,” she said. “We call them ‘at risk’ because they’re just surviving and trying to get through.”

She’s eager to work alongside the women as they find stability.

“We’re trying to help them with mentorship and anything we can help them with,” she said. “This is not a one-size-fits-all program. We want to ask

for young mothers in the program.

“She saw this need, and she believes in this program,” Tomblin said. “She’s the reason this program is so amazing.” Abel founded the program in Mount Joy, but it currently operates out of Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. It serves women throughout Lancaster County.

Many of the Sages in the program have had personal experiences that help them connect with their Grace.

“A lot of the mentors involved with us have said things like, ‘I had a baby at 17, and I would have loved to have a program like this when I was that age,’” Tomblin remarked.

The organization is always looking for women to serve as mentors or help in any capacity as a volunteer.

“We definitely need Sages, but if someone doesn’t want to be a mentor or they think that’s too much on their plate, we are looking for people who want to drive or provide child care at our meetings, or if someone is an expert on something, we’d love to have them come in and talk to the girls,” said Tomblin.

Women who are interested in becoming Sages may sign up for a training to be held on Saturday, Sept. 27. The comprehensive program will provide background on expectations and responsibilities of the Sages.

After the training, Sages are expected to set aside six to 10 hours a month to meet with their Grace.

“That can look like texting every week, phone calls, getting together to fill out a resume,” Tomblin said. “It can look like a lot of different areas of contact.”

She noted that the program is never lacking for Graces, so the need for mentors is great.

“We really need volunteers,” she said. “This program can help so many people out, and it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in a Grace’s life.”

For more information on volunteering or details on the upcoming training, visit https://secondgrace.org/ mentor, call 717-435-0207 or email Tomblin at Callie .secondgrace@gmail.com.
