iddle Octorara Presbyterian will hold its annual outdoor yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 5. Vendors from the community can rent 10- fo o t-by -10- fo o t spaces and should bring their own tables. Anyone interested in procuring a slot should call Dan Henr y at 717-381-9947. The deadline to reserve a space is Thursday, Aug. 27. Last year, the yard sale featured 25 vendors occupying a total of 40 spaces. “You can get a little bit of everything,” Henry said. The event is a fundraiser for Quarryville-based Joyfully Made Fellowship, which describes itself
Members of the Joyfully Made Fellowship ministry
as a “nonprofit one-of-a-kind special needs ministry and church.” The 100% volunteer organization provides opportunities to those of all ages with disabilities and special needs. Joyfully Made students have
been attending Middle Octorara Bible school in recent years. “When we decided to do the yard sale, we thought Joyfully Made would be a great ministry to do a fundraiser for,” said Henry. The yard sale will also have food
prepared by church members, including breakfast sandwiches, ham sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, baked goods, and beverages. Proceeds from food sales will also go to Joyfully Made Fellowship. Joyfully Made Fellowship started a youth praise band at Wesley Church 20 years ago. “Eventually, many of the typical students went on to college, got married, or moved away,” Tami Shaub said during a recent presentation. “We were left with a core group of individuals who love music but were not able to perform at a worship service anymore. Most of the students left in our group had special needs. I asked them, along with their parents, what they felt we should do as a group if we weren’t a youth praise band any longer. They all said that they just liked to get together, because they didn’t have to work so See Yard Sale pg 2

SNM is also supporting 60 families through its summer SWEEP effort. “We pack a bag for every week of the month, and they come to pick it up once a month,” said Beiler. “They get four bags, and it is larger meals, family size. We tried it lots of different ways, and we found to ease a transportation barrier it was easier for people to come once a month.” Dolan added, “Judy and her team create a different menu for each week, and the folks will come once a month and pick up all the bags - once in June, once in July, once in August, so they get a total of probably 12-plus

Nate’s not sure if he will pursue a career in music. “My primary goal, what I see is my vocation, is to be a father,” he said. “I just (want) to be a family man. Oftentimes being a professional musician, especially a composer, it’s really hard to feed a family of a decent size just off music. I’m thinking about it, praying about it, just kind of seeing where God leads me. If He wants me to go that direction and I find a lot of success with it, then that’s great. But if not, that’s okay. It’s always going to be a part of my life even if I’m not making bank off of music. I still love doing it, and I’m not necessarily doing it for the money anyway.”

selves. Some people paint or they write. For me, it’s music.” The album, which took eight months to record, was 12 years in the making. Nate began playing the violin when he was 7 years old. His mother, Kristin, is a professional pianist and harpist. “She really helped nurture that in me,” Nate said. “I would find instruments and ask for instruments for my birthday.” His father, Joel, has also been instrumental. “My dad is the number one emotional supporter,” Nate said. “He does not play music at all, but he’s really been supportive of me.” The father and son enjoy spending time together outdoors hunting, fishing, and hiking. “That really kind of found its way into the music too because most of my music is more naturally inspired,” Nate said. He has been classically trained by Tara Kenkelen. “She was my primary violin teacher all through from the time I was 7 to the time I graduated,” Nate said. “She’s an amazing violinist, so she really helped me with that. And then in high school, I started getting into like traditional Irish music and folk music. I really enjoyed the sound of it. I just really connected with it, so I started employing my classical training to play fiddle music as well. I started incorporating that into my compositions as well. And that’s kind of how the sound was born, more or less.” Nate, who was homeschooled, will be a rising sophomore at Christendom College, a liberal arts college in Front Royal, Va. He plans to major in economics with a minor in music. With “The Lighthouse” receiving rave reviews, Nate has already started working on his second album. “I have a bunch of songs put together right now,” he said. “I’m not quite sure how it’s all going to come together, but I’ve done a lot of recording with my mom on the harp. And then I have just a bunch of other songs that I’ve made over the past couple months and then more stuff that I’m going to record at school. I’ve got a lot of friends who are musicians at school, so we’re going to do some recording together down there.”
R130391
The collection of recordings, listed under his full name, Nathaniel E. Young, is available on all major platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. “(The reception has) been really good,” Nate said. “On release day, I made sure to reach out to a bunch of my friends and family and tell them it’s out, take a listen. It was great to get the positive reception from them. But also, more on a global scale it’s been doing pretty well, especially for a first release from kind of a smaller artist. I’m pretty satisfied with it. It’s been reaching a lot of people. More importantly, I think it just has touched a lot of people’s hearts, which is more what I’m going for, not just the numbers. It’s been a blessing.” The 19-year-old recorded the album made up of original songs in his home. Nate plays the violin, ukulele, and guitar on the LP. “It was fun,” he said. “I love composing and being able to figure different things out on different instruments. I really enjoy that. I made most of it in my room, and there are a lot of different artists on it as well, all friends of mine. They contributed as well with vocals, piano, percussions. It’s a very collaborative work, which is fun. Music is more fun when you do it with other people.” “The Lighthouse” was inspired by a book of the same name by Michael D. O’Brien. “It’s a beautiful book,” said Nate. “I read it years ago, and it really resonated with me like no other book has except the Bible. It was really inspiring. For months, I really wanted to write something about that because that’s just where I go. I just wanted to let it out in a musical way. Months went by, and then finally I started and it all kind of flowed. It’s definitely a God moment. It just all came together.” He said it’s his way of communicating his feelings. “Music for me is the easiest way to express the inner workings of the soul and your emotions and everything like that,” said Nate, who throughout high school was a concert master for the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts. “I think different people have different ways of expressing them-

Program to Explore Flax Processing
Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18th- and 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning Wheel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. There is a fee for nonmembers, payable by cash or check only. LASN’s 2026 theme is “Sewing Revolution,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic. LASN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fitting and construction skills related primarily to garment sewing. It meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months, with Zoom meetings held during the winter. Retreats, service projects, and a fabric swap are optional activities. For more information, contact lancastersews@gmail.com.
