Solanco Fair Will Hold Special Apron Contest

People who enter the American 250 PA Apron Contest will have a chance to reap what they sew.

The top three finishers at the Solanco Fair will each receive a cash prize, and the blue-ribbon winner will move on to the state competition with an opportunity to bring home more cash.

The contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). “A flyer came to the (Solanco Fair) office, and since I’m in charge of the sewing area, they asked if we wanted to do this,” Connie Rutt said. “I thought, ‘Why not?’ We have a good corps of sewers here in the Southern End.”

Rutt said the contest could create even more interest in sewing competitions. “The numbers have gone down over the years,” she said. “We don’t have quite as many doing it. We have

a few more young people the last couple years entering, and it’s a great thing to promote in the area

and to participate in the state farm show.” The apron competition is only

LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH

SAFE STORAGE LIVES Saves

Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.

In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.

• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.

• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.

• Store ammunition separately and securely.

• Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access.

org. Registration is not required to attend. Copies of the book will also be on sale. All proceeds will benefit the Quarryville Library.

“We’re so grateful for Quarryville and the incredible people who make it such a special place,” said Zac, who is the principal of Providence Elementary School. “We’re passionate about writing, reading, and encouraging others to do the same, and the library is a wonderful space where stories are shared, curiosity grows, and community comes together to lift one another up.”

The Cul-de-Sac KidsOlivia, her siblings Eliot and Isaac, and the Bauermasters’ neighbors Liam and Carson Lefever - will sell lemonade during the event, with those proceeds also going to the Quarryville Library. Putting Others First will purchase the lemonade supplies.

The Cul-de-Sac Kids have been selling lemonade for several years to assist local charities.

Putting Others First will also provide a balloon artist for the event. Roche, the Quarryville Library’s children librarian, said there will be two different craft projects for young attendees based on age.

“Our mission statement is to support basic needs, education, and emergency response,” said Mr. POF. “This ties into that. They’re helping a library, and we like to help the library, so it just all ties

together.”

Putting Others First and the library have developed a special rapport.

“We already had a brief connection from our wonderful collaboration with the internship, and they reached out to me again, asking if it is feasible to do a lemonade event,” said Roche. “And I thought it would be a great way to end the Summer Reading Program. It’ll be the day before the deadline, so it’ll also remind everybody to get their forms in so that they can earn their rewards.”

Bringing in Zac and the Cul-de-Sac Kids was a natural fit. “I also have a relationship with this school district and Dr. B, and I was aware of his books,” Roche said. “We had discussed having an author visit, but generally author visits don’t go so well here. They don’t get a lot of attention, but if it is a fundraiser, I thought it would be a great way to enhance it with crafts, and then we were also going to offer balloon art and some background music.”

Roche is excited to see Putting Others First and the Cul-de-Sac Kids come together for the fundraiser. “Having children develop a program themselves that are fundraisers is a very impressive thing, and I’m really thrilled to be a part of that, even in a small way,” she said. “I’m just proud of what I see in this community and the altruism in the youngest and the oldest of our citizens. … I like the idea of saying that it’s the elders in our community are joining with the children in our community to support each other and all of us.”

Riley Houck’s Passion for Soccer Burns With the Inferno

Riley Houck loves soccer - the competitive energy, the familiarity, the relationships.

A dedicated college player, Houck initially viewed the Lancaster Inferno as a training tool, a vehicle for bridging seasons or a way to hone skills. But the way things have played out, she has come to see the local pre-professional women’s soccer club as a whole lot more.

“I think (the Inferno) has kind of taken on its own separate thing for me,” said Houck. “I think the Inferno, compared to college soccer, we talk about it being separate. College soccer is a fall sport; you’ve got to train over the summer, and (the Inferno) is a good way to keep your skill set up. But you’ve got to be able to adapt to different environments.”

Houck recently completed her second season as a goalkeeper for the Lancaster Inferno, which is headquartered at Suite 35, Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. The Inferno, which is made up of some of the finest women’s soccer players from across Lancaster County, competes in the Mid-Atlantic Division of the United Soccer League, Women (USL-W) and plays its home matches at Penn Medicine Park, which also hosts the Lancaster Stormers baseball team, at 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

“I’d say my role on the team is to definitely be a leader,” said Houck, a 2023 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School who lives in East Lampeter Township. “Our position as goalkeepers requires us to be the eyes on the field. We tell the other players what

we’re seeing. We should be the loudest leaders on the field, even though we aren’t always engaged. We have a pretty loud voice that controls most of the game.”

“I think overall, we had a pretty good season,” continued Houck. “Our team this year was almost entirely made up of new players, so we had to build a new chemistry.”

The Lancaster Inferno went 4-5-1 in the USL-W’s Mid-Atlantic Division, a season that began in early May and concluded in late June. The USL-W is designed to be a proving ground for women’s soccer players looking to play pro-

fessionally and a way for college players to remain active out of season.

“I love it because it supports women in sports,” said Houck. “Lancaster has always been a competitive soccer area. When I was young, we looked up to Inferno players. We wanted to be them. I love that we can be role models for young girls in sports. It’s just nice to be a part of something that’s building for women and young girls.”

After graduating from Conestoga Valley, Houck played one season of Division I women’s soccer

MOAA Plans Picnic

The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold its annual picnic on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Waltz Vineyards, 1599 Old Lime Road, Manheim. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m., and the meal from Hess’s Barbecue will be served at noon.

The menu will include applewood smoked pulled pork barbecue, hickory smoked beef brisket, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, tossed salad,

and dessert. A selection of Waltz wine as well as other beverages will also be included.

All current and past military officers are invited. Reservations and payment are required by Monday, Aug. 18, by contacting Dennis Benchoff at 717-560-1260 or dlbenchoff2@comcast .net.

at Fairfield University in Connecticut. During this upcoming fall season, Houck, who’s pursuing a career as a physician assistant, will be a member of Lock Haven’s Division II squad, which competes in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

“I’ve always experienced soccer as an outlet,” said Houck. “Soccer has never judged you, and it’s always been there for you. It provides so many opportunities. I’ve always been social, and you always get different kinds of relationships. It’s a different closeness. (Fellow players) understand you in ways other people don’t. I love the sport. That’s why I have to keep going.”

Houck started playing soccer when she was 4, and as she grew into it,

the game required four two-hour practices a week and multiple games in season. At one point, she was both a goalkeeper and a field player, before eventually gravitating to the position that her father once played.

“Since I was playing Division I soccer, I wanted something to push me,” said Houck of her 2024 season with the Lancaster Inferno. “I thought it was going to be a good way to play competitive soccer. After the first year, I got so close to the girls and the coaches. They’re like my family. It would’ve been hard to walk away after my last game. That’s what made me want to come back for my second year.”

Judges will score aprons on a 100-point scale, with a maximum of 25 points awarded for overall appearance, 25 points for creativity, 30 points for workmanship and suitability of materials, and 20 points for design and color.

SINGING SPRING FOODS

Entries for the Solanco Fair must be taken to the fairgrounds, South Lime Street, Quarryville, between noon and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16; the judging will take place the following morning.

The PSACF encouraged local fairs to find a contest sponsor, and the Solanco

Fair has teamed with Farm Women Society 31, which will cover the premiums for the local contest. The firstplace winner will earn $50, the second-place finisher will receive $25, and the third-place finisher will get $10, said Rutt, who is a founding member of Farm Women Society 31.

In addition to the $50 first prize, the winning apron will earn a place in the 2026 PA Farm Show, where first place will be worth $250, second place will earn $150, and third place will pay $100.

“Competition at the state level is pretty big,” Rutt said. “It’s going to be a tough competition for sure.”

Rutt stated that the apron contests at the fairs is a fitting way to celebrate America’s semiquincen -

tennial. “Next year is a big year,” she said. “It’s the 250th birthday (of the country). Lancaster County comes from a sewing background, and the making of things is a biggie in Lancaster County and southern Lancaster County, especially. I was a sewing leader for 40 years in the 4-H Club. There’s still a lot of kids doing it. … It’s still a craft that people want to learn to do. So I have a feeling that we’re going to get a very good turnout for this. I think we’ll have quite a few people. … Our fair is very patriotic. It brings the whole community together, and what a better way to celebrate that.” Call Rutt at 717-9405036 for more information about the Solanco Fair apron contest.

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will present “A Landscape of ‘Incalculable Advantage’: How the Lime Industry Shaped Everyday Life in 18th- and 19th-Century Southeastern Pennsylvania” by Peter Glogovsky on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Glogovsky will discuss the importance of the limestone industry for everyday life in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The program will highlight the people who quarried

stone, burned lime, and used these commodities and will show the extent to which this industry contributed to Pennsylvania’s rural and urban cultural landscapes and industrial development.

Glogovsky is a public historian and museum professional whose work focuses on Pennsylvania industrial history, cultural landscapes, and public memory. Glogovsky received a doctorate in American studies from Penn State University, with

his dissertation focusing on the Pennsylvania limestone industry; a Master of Arts in museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program; and a Bachelor of Arts in art history and anthropology from Franklin & Marshall College. He first discovered his interest in historic landscapes while growing up in rural Berks County, where he explored old farmsteads, fields, and woodlands.

The lecture will take place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Before the lecture, the Snyder Gallery will be open from 5 to 6 p.m. so that attendees may see the 2025 focus exhibit, “1825: Lafayette in Lancaster.”

tournament shirt.

“The sixth annual golf tournament is our largest fundraiser specifically to raise funds for the service dogs’ program here at UDS,” said Lori Breece, who is the manager of the service dogs training program. “It takes about $35,000 to $40,000 that we invest in each dog. If you do the math, we have

and problems, and someone helped me get better. Someone helped me get where I am today. So for me, it’s just paying forward, loving on someone, helping him heal and get better, just like someone did for me. You can’t do life alone. You need help.”

Jaime said he will also ask a question of his own. “Can we all work together to keep helping people, like Jaime or whoever their names are

out there, and the wives, the children, the siblings, the parents, nephews and nieces connected to them that really want that loved one to get better?” he said.

Jaime and his wife, Pam, are often invited to RTCM graduates’ celebrations. “Going to a wedding, to a baby shower, things like that, is a payday for us because they’re doing life like they’re supposed to. It’s just amazing,” he said.

Pam, who is RTCM’s office manager, bookkeeper, and events director, is hoping for a full house. “I want to sell out,” she said. “(The banquet hall) can only hold 450 people. I hope we sell that out. And I’m appealing to businesses, people who want to sponsor tables, to bring people to come, hear the graduates’ stories and the success over the last 10 years. And to celebrate our new building.”

30 dogs at any given time in the program, and that’s a lot of money that we have to raise. We really count on our fundraisers.”

Breece noted that the tournament has continued to grow. “We really appreciate the support of the community since 2020, when we had our first golf tournament in the midst of a pandemic, and that didn’t stop anyone from wanting to come out and support the dogs,” she said. “We have been able to grow this year over year. We do have a lofty goal this

year to raise $70,000. Last year, we raised $65,000, so it certainly isn’t out of the possibility that we can do that. But we really need the community to support this effort, and there are a lot of people that love golf.”

UDS previously held its golf tournament on a Friday afternoon in August. “We’re hoping that this change elevates the event a little bit, and also as we continue to grow, we are looking into possibly holding two flights in the future,” said Breece. “We need to make this event

add $100,000 to our bottom line. It’s really important that we get at least a fifth of our revenue goal from this fundraising event.”

Breece stated that UDS works with individuals who have mobility disabilities such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis and people who require assistance through a cane, a walker, or a wheelchair.

“Those are the type of clients that we’re able to help, because all service dogs will be trained to retrieve and

deliver (items) to somebody’s lap,” she said.

UDS also provides facility dogs for school districts, therapy offices, and child advocacy centers. “The dogs are not just touching one life,” said Breece. “They’re touching hundreds of lives.”

UDS also supplies home companion dogs on rare occasions. “We placed one a couple of years ago,” said Breece. “The dog’s sole duty is to open the back door so that a woman in the wheelchair can get outside on her deck every day without her husband having to come home. Now she has a better quality of life because she can go be outside.”

Breece pointed out the golf tournament is crucial in helping UDS offset the cost for individuals. “Every year, consistently, we lose $300,000 to $500,000 because we can’t ask for the full cost from our clients,” Breece said. “There’s no way you can ask $30,000 from our vulnerable citizens, so we ask for $5,000. That’s a fraction, and it barely covers the cost of the first year of training or the vet care or even purchasing the puppy. We are investing $35,000 to $45,000 into each puppy.”

Golf sponsors include WellSpan, Primitives by Kathy, Alert Medical Alarms, Personal Wealth Advisory, Rineer Renovations, MI Windows & Doors, Bill and Kit Gamber, SN Lombardo Capital, Donegal Insurance Group, Simon Lever, Keller Bros. Ford, Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, ELA Group, Weis Markets, and Hines Insurance Services.

Sponsorships are available until Aug. 15 in various categories. For additional information, contact Breece at 717-847-0445 or lorib@ udservices.org.
