MOPW Plans Fifth Clothing Giveaway By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The fifth annual clothing giveaway hosted by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 7 a.m. to noon at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372. Why open so early? “’Cause they’re here at 6 o’clock, waiting,” said MOPW member Marlene Fromm. The giveaway was created following the example of a church in Willow Street, and it has continued to be popular. “People are shopping for school clothes, and it’s inexpensive,” explained MOPW member Shirley Miller. She noted that clothing, shoes, and accessories will be free of charge, but

attendees are invited to bring donations - either nonperishable food or cash - for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. The MOPW members have been collecting clothing and other items from church members and from supporters in the general community. Nancy Harnish related how a personal shopping trip to Waltman’s Hidden Treasures in Buck has resulted in a partnership between the consignment shop and the church. The store had been looking for a charitable way to dispose of unsold children’s clothes, and when the owners learned that clothing for youngsters is in high demand at the giveaway, Waltman’s signed on to donate items. “God sent me there that day,” Harnish remarked.
