Teacher Becomes Prolific Author

Author Sheila Schmitt is truly an overnight sensation.
The Conestoga resident has written four books in a nine-month span, the first of which was crafted while many people were sleeping.
“Lucky Penny” was self-published through Amazon in October 2025. “I couldn’t sleep one night, and I knew I had the story in my head,” she said. “Something made me write it, and I wrote it on my phone in the middle of the night, and then I revised it. It took a little while to do revisions. Then I just sent it to (Amazon), and they had it published within two months. That one went really fast.”
“Lucky Penny’s Saturday Surprise” was released in December 2025, followed by “Ornery Little Kitty Goes to the Barn” in January 2026 and “The Moo Crew” in July.

Not everybody is a leader. But almost all of us have some leadership skills.
Leadership Lancaster’s role in the community is to uncover leadership abilities, foster them and help others to make the most of them.
“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,” said Sarah Kemble, program director for Leadership Lancaster. “They kind of bring everyone together to achieve goals. It’s never about themselves. They are people who put their egos aside.”
A community nonprofit located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, Leadership Lancaster accomplishes its mission through training, exchanges of ideas, connection and collaboration and four key programs - college core class, core class, executive class and encore class. That range of classes allows Leadership Lancaster to bring out the best in individuals, regardless of their experience or their standings in the community.
“One of the things we ask our participants is ‘When did you first consider yourself a leader?’” said Kemble. “What it boils down to is that leadership is about caring about people you’re working with in the community, realizing your own unique set of skills and wanting to contribute to something bigger than yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about being your best self and achieving something great with people.

The Millersville Woman’s Club will host a picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Millersville Borough’s Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane. The picnic will take place in Pavilion A, the largest pavilion. This gathering is a meet-and-greet and is open to all area women. There is no obligation to join the club.

“We’re always looking to develop our programs,” Kemble continued. “We’re looking to get more involved with the community. We’re looking to work with nonprofits. We want people to feel more connected to communities. Leadership is a continuous process. We’re all works in progress.”
Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area. “We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States. We’re trying to make sure we have people representing different pockets of the community. We just want to be good stewards of our community.”
Overseen by a 15-member board, Leadership Lancaster employs Kemble, executive director Jennifer Diaz and program coordinator Sage Rivera. In addition to tuition fees - some of which amount to employers covering the costs of employees’ professional development - Leader -
ship Lancaster is funded through grants from local foundations.
“We have some really wonderful, amazing people in our community doing great things,” said Kemble. “We get to know these individuals personally. Lancaster is full of amazing people.
Lancaster is such a strong place for collaboration. We are really good at working together and working toward a larger goal.”

Announces Expansion
The Manufacturers’ Association has announced an investment by BAE Systems to help expand the organization’s Automation Training Center, a new 5,000-square-foot stateof-the-art training facility dedicated to automation, robotics, and mechatronics training in support of the defense industrial base and regional manufacturing sector.
The newly named BAE Systems Automation Training Center is an expansion of the Manufacturers’ Association’s existing
20,000-square-foot training center and was made possible in part through the support of BAE Systems, which helped underwrite the development of the facility. The center will provide hands-on training and apprenticeship opportunities designed to upskill workers in the high-demand fields of automation, robotics, and mechatronics. The BAE Systems Automation Training Center will be a key component of TIDE, the Technology Innovation Defense Ecosystem, a central Pennsylvania initiative
of the region’s defense manufacturing community, designated by the Department of War. TIDE was also awarded a $6.1 million grant in 2023 through the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to train and upskill the defense manufacturing workforce across the region.
Lancaster was born out of a two-year initiative on volunteerism by the Junior League of Lancaster and the support of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the program’s more than 3,000 graduates have impacted the Lancaster County community in a variety of meaningful ways.

Bird Club Posts Field Trip, Meeting

Patti Barber, an endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will present “Osprey: Pennsylvania’s Less Appreciated Recovery Success.” Ospreys are an incredible success story but are often overshadowed by the
recovery of bald eagles and peregrine falcons. Barber will cover the history of the osprey population in Pennsylvania and reasons for its decline and recovery. She will describe current monitoring efforts, successes, challenges, and failures, as well as the current population and distribution in the state.
Barber has studied birds on four continents. She did her master’s research on mate guarding and paternity in red-faced warblers. With the Pennsylvania Game Commission, she is responsible for the 20 threatened and endangered native birds of the state.

“The Moo Crew” was inspired by Schmitt’s livestock. “I always had the story in my head because people aren’t used to others having pet steers, so they get a lot of attention from people,” she said. “People will stop - family, friends, and even some strangers will just stop and ask if they can pet them because they’re really friendly. It was just a matter of getting the story in my head onto paper.”
Schmitt and her husband, Greg, are both third-grade teachers at Bart-Colerain Elementary in the Solanco School District. They have a total of 20 animals - three Great Danes, three roosters, two horses, four steers, and eight cats.

Schmitt isn’t finished writing books but will enjoy some well-earned rest. “I’m going to take a little break and enjoy just reading them,” said Schmitt. “It is neat to see people’s reactions to it, because a lot of people love animals. It’s just that this whole thing has just come full circle. That was really the theme of everything. It just includes so many people and so many neat relationships now. We have an amazing farrier that does our hooves for us, or we can call anytime we need anything. We have an amazing vet. We have hay. It’s amazing to see all the relationships and how people get so excited about animals.”
Historical Society Plans Program
The Millersville Area Historical Society will offer a presentation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.
Stephen J. Shaw, a retired U.S. Army command sergeant major, will speak on the Lancaster County Veterans Court.
The Lancaster County Veterans Court is a treatment organization based on proven national research that provides veterans an opportunity to pursue appropriate therapies, while productively addressing associated legal problems. Shaw, who has been an active mentor with the court for the past 12 years, will offer an overview of the court and its mission. The program will conclude with a question-and-answer period.
Shaw, who is also a retired middle school science teacher, has published numerous military history articles for magazines and is author of the book “German & Spanish Military Rings.” A world traveler, the Millersville University graduate most recently spent time in Tanzania, where he participated in a wildlife safari.

twice as large as its predecessor and can be controlled remotely and wirelessly from anywhere around the field. Previously, wired cables had to be run from the dugouts to control the scoreboard remotely.
“The Houghton family has been what we call our grand slam sponsors,” said Craig Fackler, sponsorship coordinator for the Little League. “The Houghtons have donated everything for the scoreboard. They have kids in the league; they want to see everything elevated.”
Octorara Area Little League rostered about 215 kids last season, ranging from T-ball to the senior division, which goes up to 16 years of age. Many other areas have shifted away from a formal affiliation with Little League International, which has expanded Octorara Area Little League’s borders to include much of the Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts.
The new scoreboard cost the Houghton family approximately $7,000, Fackler said. Summers & Zim’s donated electrical hardware for the scoreboard, while J&D Smucker Construction provided parts for the scoreboard’s

base. Dutch-Way Hardware also assisted with parts for the project.
The gameday experience is strong at Lions Park. Behind home plate sits a two-story building that houses a robust concession stand and press box. Three of the four fields at the complex have covered and enclosed dugouts, as well as a fence. Two of the fields also currently have working scoreboards, while parts from the previous scoreboard on the main field will be repurposed for one of the secondary fields.
Another major recent improvement on the main field was a brand-new sound system, donated by Woerth Motor Company. The system allows songs to be played during breaks in action and gives the ability to make announcements for the whole complex.
With the sound system, the players at Octorara Area Little League have a unique privilege that is rare at any level of amateur baseball: walk-up songs. The kids get to choose their own song to be played when they approach the plate; some kids choose classics, while others select songs by contemporary acts like Imagine Dragons and AJR.
“It’s a little bit of every -
thing,” Fackler said.
Fall ball registration is open for all divisions and can be found online at www.octoraralittleleague .org. T-Ball and “Minors” division registration is free, while older divisions carry a nominal cost. The season will open on Saturday, Aug. 22, and run through Halloween.
Even with the modern improvements, Lions Park still carries the traditional, classic vibe of local youth baseball. Sponsorship banners adorn the outfield fences, and local nonplaying kids always seem to find ways to have
fun around the park on gamedays.
The park is a strong foundation to carry the organization into the future. Denim Kurtzhals, mayor of Atglen, was one of the volunteers involved with the erection of the scoreboard. Kurtzhals is also the vice president of Octorara Area Little League and manages the organization’s “Junior” division team.
“I think it really helps (the kids) feel like the community supports them,” said Kurtzhals. “Baseball players are definitely appreciative of that.”
