National Night Out To Be Held In Providence Township BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
rovidence Township will celebrate its National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. The long-standing community event will be held at the Providence Township Office, 200 Mount Airy Road, New Providence. This rain-or-shine event is expected to draw about 500 attendees and will have an event staff member direct parking. A tradition honored in multiple cities across the U.S., National Night Out began to take shape in 1984 as neighborhood residents around the country banded together to better organize in their communities and make them safer places to live. Since then, it has served to connect locals with nonprofits and first responders in their area. Initially, Providence Township held community picnics to serve a similar purpose, but in 2018 the picnics were revitalized and evolved into the something more along the

lines of the nationwide tradition. This will be the fourth annual event held in Providence Township; members from Lancaster EMS, Pennsylvania State Police and multiple local fire companies (Quarryville, Willow Street, Rawlinsville and Refton) will be in attendance to meet with community members. “It’s a great time for the community to get together to meet their first responders,” said Heidi Martinez, zoning officer for the township. “It’s also a good opportunity to discover nonprofits and organizations in the area.” A plethora of organizations from the county will operate stands and provide information as well as a variety of games and activities for participants; Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Solanco Education Foundation, Christian Motorcyclists Association and the Quarryville Library will be represented, among others. Providence Township’s National Night Out has boasted complimentary food and beverages as well as a
bouncy house in recent years; the bouncy house will return this year, and the complimentary food and drinks will include hot dogs, Herr’s potato chips, ice cream sandwiches, water and iced tea. The event will introduce new attractions for this year’s function, including caricatures offered by local resident Sam Mylin and axe throwing courtesy of Hatchet & Axe Co., both free of charge. At 7 p.m., the Quarryville Fire Company will continue the community favorite candy drop activity, where a fire engine ladder is extended by the maintenance building and children age 10 and under are invited to fill their pockets during the ensuing shower of sweets. Additionally, each year the fire companies present their trucks to allow the children a chance to climb inside a real fire engine. National Night Out is free and open to the public. BSA Honors Quarryville Sets Sidewalk Chalk Contest Scout Leaders Three adult Scout leaders were recently honored for dedicated service to the Susquehanna District of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Joseph F. Flaim of Troop 28, Paradise; Howie Hartman, Troop 56, Strasburg; and Donald H. Wilson, Pack and Troop 76, New Providence, are the 2022 District Award of Merit Recipients in the Susquehanna District. Colorful fun will be found all around Quarryville as part of the second annual Chalk It Up Quarryville! sidewalk/driveway chalk contest, set for Friday, Aug. 5. The competition challenges children and youths to channel their creativity and use sidewalk chalk to decorate the sidewalk or driveway outside their homes. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: age 6 and under; ages 7 to 11; and ages 12 to 15. Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church will present “A Sermon in Song” featuring humorist Mark Cable, singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist, on Sunday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. The program is free, but a freewill offering will be received. Lancaster County Office of Aging senior centers still have Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for county residents age 60 and over. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvania grown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Each person is eligible to receive vouchers only once per year. An individual must be at least age 60, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $25,142 for one person or less than $33,874 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. Eligible seniors can go to the closest senior center to pick up vouchers for themselves. Individuals should bring an ID in case they are asked for proof of age. An application or proof of income is not necessary. If eligible seniors are not able to go to a center themselves, they may request an application to fill out and have another person take it to a center to pick up vouchers on their behalf. Applications are available from the Office of Aging at

The contest is limited to Quarryville Borough residents only. “Last year was our first year,” said Michelle Evans, borough public events coordinator. “The entries were really good, and the kids loved it.” In the first year, the contest was so popular it drew 40 entries. This year, on the opening day of registration, nine entrants signed up. According to the contest rules, participants may only use washable, non-oil-based sidewalk chalk. No acrylics, liquid or hard pastels, markers or paint are permitted, and no additional props can be used. All artwork must be appropriate for public viewing for people of all ages with no graphic or violent content. No political messages, words or symbols will be allowed, and business advertising will also not be permitted. The borough reserves the right to disqualify any entry if the content is deemed inappropriate. All participants are responsible to provide their own chalk and to clean up. By participating, entrants will be held responsible for any damage done by using nonapproved materials. The size of the entry can cover a portion or all of the sidewalk or driveway at the entrant’s home. If there is more than one child entered at the same address, each child should enter separately and complete their own artwork. It is helpful if the different entries are separated from one another and if the child’s name is included on his or her work. Parents are asked not to help their children with their entries. “Last year, there was a family of five children. They divided up the space and each one had

LCCTC Students Receive Awards The Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation (LCCTF) recently announced this year’s scholarship and Workforce Grant recipients. The winning Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) students were selected due to their dedication to their studies, development of skills, and completion of their coursework. This year, across all LCCTC campuses, the LCCTF awarded $24,000 in scholarships and $11,500 in workforce grants.
The LCCTF awards scholarships for LCCTC high school students who plan to pursue postsecondary education.
