Solid Rock Set for Annual 5K Run

Solid Rock Youth Ministries will hold its annual Solid Rock 5K run on the Enola LowGrade Trail on Saturday, Aug. 1, in Quarryville. The event is one of the organization’s three big annual fundraisers.
This year’s rendition of the run
will be the ninth annual 5K. The entrance to the trail is located at 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Carpooling is encouraged, and the race will be held rain or shine.
“The 5K is just such a fun event,” said Raeanne Nixon, executive director at Solid Rock Youth Ministries. “You can see our community coming together and having a good time.”
Solid Rock Youth Ministries serves students in the Solanco area during the school year and over the summer by providing programs, activities and family events. Solid Rock served more than 400 students last year.
“My favorite thing is just being with the kids,” said Julie Spangler, who coordinates the event. “Getting
to know them and hearing some of their stories ... you think it’s the littlest things, but then when you see their smile, you realize that those relationships mean a lot to them.”

In the area of equal rights, our country has made great strides. But the process continues; there is still much work to be done.
The brand-new Stevens & Smith Center sheds a wider, more colorful light on the issues of equality.
“The center explores the ongoing struggle to expand freedom, equality and democracy in America,” said Jason Traverse, the director of marketing and communications for the Stevens & Smith Center. “Through the stories
of Stevens, Smith and countless others, visitors are invited to consider how ordinary and extraordinary people alike have worked to advance these ideals, and how that work continues in America today.
“What makes the center special is that it doesn’t simply present history as something that happened long ago,” continued Traverse. “It asks visitors to consider how the questions that defined Stevens’ and Smith’s lives - questions about citizenship, equality, justice and democracy - continue to shape our lives today.”

Recently, the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy opened its doors at 13-15 E. Vine St., Lancaster, to visitors. The new museum, which is located on the site of Stevens’ home and law offices, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Stevens & Smith Center is associated with and a part of LancasterHistory.
“The project has been many years in the making - more than a decade,” said Traverse. “It grew from painstaking research, preservation efforts, archaeological discovers and a growing recognition that Lancaster - and this historic landmark in particular - played an important role in some of the most consequential chapters of American history. The center represents a communitywide commitment to preserving and sharing that history for future generations.”
Housed in a multistory building, the Stevens & Smith Center tells its tales through exhibition galleries, original artifacts, educational programs and immersive experiences. Visitors connect local history to national history through stories about the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Christiana Resistance.
“Many people are surprised to learn that some of the most important stories in the fight against slavery and for equal rights happened right here in Lancaster,” said Traverse. “We want visitors to understand that Lancaster’s history is not a footnote to the American story - it is American history. Lancaster County’s history is remarkably deep and diverse. Lancaster has long been a crossroads of people, ideas and movements that helped shape the nation.”
An influential statesman from Lancaster County during the 1800s, Stevens actively assisted individuals in search of freedom through the Underground Railroad, and many of his ideals helped form national laws. Steven’s longtime confidante, Smith was a successful businessperson and property owner who shared Stevens’ home.
“History helps us understand how we arrived at the present moment,” said Traverse. “It gives us perspective, context and a deeper understanding of the choices individuals and communities have made. Preserving history allows us to learn from the past while inspiring future generations to engage thoughtfully with the challenges of their own time.”

Dixon, who will embody the role of Sarah Eva “Sallie” Bolton Pyle in presentations at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pyle was in the 1855 inaugural class at the Lancaster County Normal School, which later became Millersville University. The faculty invited her to remain at the school as an instructor, and she did so for three years. She wrote weekly to her mother, Mary Ann Brosius Bolton, and 60 of the letters are in the Millersville Uni
versity archives. Pyle’s character will be brought to life through her words, which cover topics such as daily life at school, social concerns of the day, and Pyle’s romantic interests.
On Sept. 19, the meetinghouse will transform into an art gallery for the “Ancestors and Descendants Art Show.” The display will feature both traditional and contemporary works of art, all of which were created by members of the Drumore Friends and their Friends from pg 2
descendants. The items will include paintings, sketches, pottery, original linocut prints and etchings, quilts, woodworking, handmade books, photography, silk scarves, and historical pewter objects. An audio station will offer recordings of literary material.

“Third in Strasburg” Activities Posted
The Strasburg Marketing Association will celebrate Third in Strasburg on Friday, July 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. Participating businesses will stay open late, offering special deals, discounts, and activities.

Dyslexia Center Holds Graduation
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 21st annual Celebration of Achievement on June 7 at Stayer Hall, located on Millersville University’s campus. Seven graduates from the program were in attendance: Chloe Britcher-Walters, Weston Elmore, Xander Hester, Bryce Moyer, Cian Rice, Rowan Suckau, and Olivia Walburn.

Packets may be picked up on Friday, July 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Faith Church, 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, or on the day of the race starting at 7 a.m. There will be a kids’ half-mile fun run at 8 a.m. for children age 10 and under. Finishers will receive goodie bags and medals.
The 5K will start at 8:30 a.m. The overall first-place male and female finishers will receive a medal and cash prize; the top three male and female finishers in eight different age brackets will receive a medal.
The age groups are as follows: 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and older. Pretzel City Sports will provide official timing.
Drink stations will be available throughout the
course. Donuts from The Wandering Donut food truck will be available, along with the Retreat for Coffee truck.
Last year’s race drew 238 runners. Solid Rock hopes that this year’s event, sponsored by Steel Systems Installation, will raise at least $36,000.
Funds raised from the event will strictly go toward Solid Rock’s operating expenses, although the ministry is also amid a capital campaign for its new physical location.
The planned location of 104 E. State St., Quarryville, was the first floor of an old car garage. Renovations are underway at the location at the cost of $2.3 million, $1 million of which was already raised by September 2025.

Operating out of Faith Church while renovations are underway, Solid Rock Youth Ministries offers after-school programs for students of all ages; summer programs like venture, baking, art and leadership; and programs for local homeschooled children.
“All of the programs are free, which is a huge blessing for so many families,” said Nixon, who added that Solid Rock primarily serves families in the Solanco School District, with some spilling in from neighboring areas. “We get to do life with families and students, providing a safe environment for them.”
The center, sponsored by Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, is one of six Children’s Dyslexia Centers in Pennsylvania; the sites provide tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. The center recently moved from downtown Lancaster to Millersville’s campus. Children are eligible regardless of economic status, and they do not need a dyslexia diagnosis to attend. As the basis for tutoring and tutor training, the center uses the Structured Literacy approach - a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language, based on the Orton-Gillingham method. Nearly 300 children have received services through the center since its opening in 2002.

UDS Holds Fundraising Gala
United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) recently held a gala with the theme “Beyond 60: Your Impact. Our Journey.” The sold-out event brought together 500 guests for a night dedicated to service, community connection, and philanthropy. The event was defined by teamwork and storytelling. When the scheduled keynote speaker, John Kruk, was unable to attend due to illness, Teresa Rineer and the UDS Gala Committee pivoted to keep the event on track. Stepping in for their friend and teammate, Mickey Morandini and Tommy Greene - members of the 1993 Phillies National League Championship team - joined Dave Spadaro for a fireside chat and a VIP meet-and-greet with supporters.

LCCTF Invests in Students’ Futures

Some would have you believe that money makes the world go ‘round. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation (LCCTF) is of the opinion that young people need money - or scholarships and grants - to make money.
“Scholarships and workforce grants are investments in students’ futures,” said Jennifer Baker, who’s been the executive director of LCCTF for seven years. “They help students com -
plete their education, enter the workforce with valuable skills and credentials, and pursue careers that offer long-term stability, growth and opportunity. scholarships - to nearly 70 adult students and recently graduated high school students from almost every public school district in Lancaster County. The $87,000 total represented the most that LCCTF has ever awarded in its 23 years of blessing students.
Scholarships are applied to costs related to continuing education. Workforce grants are used for uniforms, tools and testing fees for individuals beginning careers.
At the end of the school year’s third marking period in March, the application process, which included written essays, financial information and grades, was opened to students. The applications were reviewed by school counselors and program directors, and their recommendations were passed along to the LCCTF.
A majority of LCCTF’s workplace grants and scholarships are funded through the organization’s Fly on the Run fundraiser, which features a banquet and a fly-fishing tournament at Millport Conservancy in Warwick Township. Other awards are funded through private donors.
This year, LCCTF raised more than $140,000 in support of students and education programs.

Since its inception in 2003, LCCTF has raised over $7 million toward its mission of supporting the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), which operates four campuses in the county. There were 1,784 adult students enrolled in LCCTC programs during the 2025-26 school year, and LCCTC’s high school enrollment for 2026-27 is expected to exceed 1,650 students from every public school district in Lancaster County.
