Solid Rock Youth Ministries Accepting Entries for 5K
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Raeanne Nixon and Mary Price received similar messages around the same time.
“The Lord was calling her to start a 5K for an organization, and I felt like the Lord was calling us to do a 5K,” said Nixon, who is the executive director of Solid Rock Youth Ministries in Quarryville.
Nixon and Price had a chance meeting at Encounter Church.
“Mary came up to me and said, ‘Hey, I love your ministry, and I feel like the Lord has laid on my heart to start a 5K, and I think Solid Rock would be a good fit,’” Nixon recalled. “I looked at her and said, ‘Well, that’s funny. The Lord told me to do a 5K for Solid Rock.”
Nixon added, “Mary wanted to do it for Solid Rock because she lived in Solanco and never knew
about Solid Rock. She said the services the ministry provides would have benefited her when she was younger.”
The Solid Rock 5K & Fun Run is going strong eight years after that conversation. This year’s event will be held rain or shine on Saturday, Aug. 2, on the Enola Low-Grade Trail. The entrance is at 301 E. State St., Quarryville.
Registration forms are available at www.solidrockquarryville.com/ run. Forms can be completed online or mailed to Solid Rock Youth Ministries. Teams of five or more people can save money on the entry fee. Preregistration will close at midnight on Wednesday, July 30. Registration must be received by Sunday, July 20, to be guaranteed a T-shirt and race bag. Registrations can be made as late as the morning of the race.

A local Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) boys’ basketball program is playing its cards right.
With teams mostly made up of players from Lancaster-Lebanon League schools, the Lancaster Aces are entering the summer on a heater.
At the East Coast Super Regional Showdown in King of Prussia on May 24 to 25, the Aces’ 16U team finished first and the 17U team placed second.
Both squads will participate in the AAU World Championship on Thursday, July 3, to Sunday, July 6, at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.

The Lancaster County Cruisers will celebrate a silver anniversary of sorts.
The group will hold its 25th annual car show on Saturday, July 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. No registration is needed. Anyone wishing to participate can bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles. There is a fee to take part; the event will be held rain or shine. More than 25 trophies will be awarded, and the first 200 participants will receive a dash plaque.
“Everybody likes to come to our car show for some reason,” club member Judy
Andrews said. “They think it’s a very nice show. We’ve even been told from people in Maryland that they like to come to our show.”
There will also be a model car contest for kids, with trophies awarded to the top entrants.
Food trucks will be on-site selling french fries, hamburgers, tacos, and ice cream. There is a pavilion with seating for visitors to enjoy their food. Vendors will sell their wares, and the club will hold a bake sale and also sell T-shirts. A DJ will be playing oldies.
Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a community of motorcycle riders who support military causes, will have a stand.

Those attending the car show are asked to bring nonperishable canned goods to support the food pantry at the Willow Street United Church of Christ (UCC).
Proceeds from the registration fees and bake sale will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Hope’s Haven, Building Bridges, and Willow Street UCC.
Between 300 and 400 vehicles take part annually.
“It’s a great day to be outside and see a wide variety of cars,” event organizer Chris Weir said. “It’s not just a ‘Vette show. It’s not a show for any one type of car. You will see lots of them as well as motorcycles.”
The Lancaster County Cruisers club has been in existence since 1994. “We’ve had a lot of good years, and we just keep getting bigger,” said Andrews.
The club meets on the second Sunday of the month
at 6 p.m. at Willow Street UCC, 2723 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street.
Everyone is welcome to attend a monthly meeting whether they own a classic or antique car, or even any car for that matter.
“You meet like-minded people,” club member Kenneth Heisey said. “You share information. There’s no judging. We have people with all makes and models.”
Lancaster County Cruisers has a yearly picnic and Christmas party and travels to visit other cruise shows and car museums.
Club member Donna Heisey said, “It’s a fun group to hang out with. You walk in, and you’re welcomed with open arms. Everybody is friendly.”
For more information about the club or car show, call Weir at 717-413-1699 or president Joe Snyder at 717-405-4068.

Soccer Team Wins Tournament
The Lampeter-Strasburg Youth Soccer U10 boys’ rec Team 2 was named the champion in its division at the Lancaster Area Recreational League at the
end-of-season tournament hosted by Solanco Youth Soccer Association (SYSA). The team is coached by Ryan MacDonald and Steve Peris.

bursting through the door and says, ‘I know what I’m going to do! I’m going to start a foundation!’” Lynn recalled.
Caleb explained that while biking by the ocean he had felt normal for the first time in four years. “He said, ‘When you get away from everything else, you get to feel normal. This is what I want to give people,’” said Lynn.
For the last 11 years, the organization Caleb formed, A Week Away Foundation, has been providing families with weeklong vacations. “Our mission is to provide respite weeks for families that are battling a life-threatening illness, thereby enabling them to come back refreshed from some time away so they can re-engage and continue to fight their disease,” said Lynn, who is the director of the registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
There are no age limitations for people going on the trip, which is for a patient diagnosed by a medical doctor and undergoing treatment, as well as family members and friends who have been caring for the patient since the diagnosis. The site of the respites must be drivable and within a 500-mile radius of A Week Away’s coverage area, which is made up of Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Perry, and York counties, along with Philadelphia.
A Week Away has granted 305 respites. Beaches are a popular destination, and the foundation also
provides trips to the Pennsylvania mountains and will send families to urban areas if the patient has a particular interest in a cultural activity.
“The life of anyone involved with fighting cancer or any chronic life-threatening illness is turmoil,” Lynn said. “It’s like living in a cement mixer, and they never, ever get a break. If we can take them out of that world, that reality, for a week and give them a stress-free experience at no cost for them, we can buy time. And if we have time, we can give God and science a chance to work.”
Before he was diagnosed with brain cancer after having a seizure, Caleb was a seemingly healthy senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School two months before graduation with plans to study pre-med and wrestle in college.
He was briefly paralyzed following the first of his six brain surgeries but bounced back and was able to run and ride a bicycle.
Lynn recalls a visit to the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania when Caleb was 18. “He put his head on my shoulder and started crying,” she said. “That wasn’t like him at all.”
Caleb had noticed a young mother holding a tiny infant and said, “We’re so blessed. We have our family and our faith. Who helps them?”
Lynn said, “That was the day the seed (for the foundation) was planted. On the boardwalk, it sprouted.”
When he realized he would not have time to graduate from Millersville, Caleb took on a variety

of jobs in the city to raise money for A Week Away.
The Light the Tree campaign is one of the foundation’s big fundraisers. In 2014, Caleb arranged for an ill child to hit the button that turned on the lights on the Christmas tree in Penn Square. In October, he suffered 40 seizures in one day, and doctors told him he likely had less than a month to live. “You have to get me to my fundraiser,” Caleb responded. He survived long enough to see the foundation grant its first respite and deliver a speech during the tree-lighting ceremony. Caleb died days later on Dec. 3, 2014, after becoming unconscious while writing thank you letters. It was one week before his 24th birthday.
Lynn keeps a collage on her desk featuring photos of some of the businesses and community members who have helped the foundation raise more

Solid Rock
Packets may be picked up on Friday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 104 E. State St., Quarryville, or on the day of the race starting at 7 a.m. There will be a kids’ fun run at 8 a.m. for children age 12 and under. Finishers will receive goodie bags and medals.
The 5K will start at 8:30 a.m. The overall first-place male and female finishers will receive a medal and cash prize, and the top three male and female finishers in the eight age brackets, ranging from 14 and under to 70 and over, will receive a medal. Pretzel City Sports will provide official timing.

Hitch Coffee and Wandering Donut food trucks will on-site. The food trucks will donate a portion of their proceeds to Solid Rock.
Julie Spangler has replaced Price as the race director this year. Spangler is a runner and has been involved with Solid Rock in many different capacities. “Mary is passing the baton,” said Jill Hess, who is Solid Rock’s advancement director.
The ministry notes that participants enjoy

the morning. “It’s one of the most fun events we have at Solid Rock out of all of our fundraising events,” Hess said. “Even if you’re not a runner, you can come and join us. We are going to have food trucks. There is just a lot of energy and excitement that happens at the 5K.”
Nixon added, “It’s definitely a family event. It’s neat to see how people come from different walks. There are some people who come to the 5K who are running the race and competing. Each person has a different reason. Over the years, to hear people’s reasons for running the 5K has been encouraging to me.”
She noted that one past participant was celebrating remission from cancer. Another had just recovered from hip surgery. “Everyone has a story,” Nixon said.
Solid Rock Youth Ministries, located at 104 E. State St., Quarryville, serves students in the Solanco area during the school year and over the summer by providing programs, activities, and family events. “Solid Rock is in this exciting season,” Nixon said. “Solid Rock keeps on growing. This past year, we served over 400 students with the Gospel.”
All the programs are free, thanks to support from community members, churches, and businesses. “By people running, they are helping us to serve these students and share Jesus with them,” Nixon said.

time, and the boys really loved it,” said Abby Tillie, who operates the Lancaster Aces with her husband, Darren.
It was a highly successful spring for the Aces. The 17U squad won the title at the Mid-Atlantic Super Showdown in West Chester on April 5 and 6. Both Aces teams won the Zero Gravity Empire State Showdown title in New York and excelled at the Philly Clash in Oaks.
The Lancaster teams have not needed an ace up their sleeves. “I think the success is because of a lot of heart,
determination, and willpower to give all their effort,” said Darren, who is the head coach of both squads. He also credits his assistant coach, Elijah Robinson Sr.
The Aces 17U roster is composed of Solanco High School students Kayden Tillie, Isaiah Wright, and Kiran Ludgate; Hayden Martin from Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S); Elijah Robinson Jr. from Octorara; Julien Severino from Penn Manor; Luke Waas from Cocalico; Brandon Bromfield from Church Farm; and Angelo Martarano from

Manheim Township.
Lancaster’s 16U squad is Garrett Wagner and Sam Harper of Solanco; Lebanon’s Alec Wolf, Elliot Schappel, Robert Santiago, and Daryan Rodriguez; Micheal Leonardo of McCaskey; and Cody Stoltzfus, who is a homeschool student.
The Aces usually practice on Wednesdays and Fridays at Carter & MacRae Elementary School in Lancaster. Tournaments take them all
over the East Coast, including South Carolina, Florida, and New Jersey. “That helps us get a lot better, so if we get to college, we’re used to that environment,” Kayden said.
His dad, Darren, praises Kayden’s competitiveness. “He’s a leader, very vocal on the court which is always needed,” said Darren. “He’s a solid rock player. It’s not always about scoring. He’ll do the defensive work also. He’s a team player at the

end of the day.”
Kayden and Isaiah have played in the same backcourt for many years. “I’ve coached Isaiah for quite some time,” said Darren. “He’s like family to us. He’s a quick player, and he likes to be a leader, also. He’s a floor general, and he has heart. He wants to win, and he wants to better himself.”
Garrett lauded the Aces’ culture. “It has helped with my confidence and development as a player and a teammate,” he said.
Sam added, “It’s fun because we’ve been playing together all these years. It helps my try new moves and stay ready for school ball.”
Hayden is a rising senior at L-S. A chance meeting with Kayden set the stage
for joining the Aces. “I was playing at the Y (Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA) and they had a tryout, and I just happened to be there. Ever since then, it’s been great.” Darren stated, “Hayden is a great guy, also. He’s very colorful. He’s emotional in a way, and he always uses his emotions positively on the court. He always hustles. He’s a grit player. He’ll get in there and play against big guys, even though the matchup may not be favorable to him.”
Julien is in his third season with the Aces. “He’s one of the nicest kids I’ve known,” Darren said. “He brings a lot of positivity to the team. He’s always smiling and plays with heart. These guys give their all out

on the court, and I can’t ask for more than that.”
A 2025 graduate of Penn Manor, Julien will continue running his pressure-washing business while beginning an internship with state Sen. Scott Martin.
Elijah Jr., who is transferring from Octorara to St. Mark’s in Delaware for his junior year, is in his first season with the Aces. “It’s been amazing,” he said. “It feels like family.”

Darren said, “Elijah is taking on the challenge of playing up on 17U team. He’s a very good guy and always looking for an opportunity to come in and better himself. He’s a workhorse and a tough guy.”
The Tillies said they are grateful for the sponsorship of Hayden’s parents, Scott and Amber Martin, and Amber’s business, Woo-Cat. “They have been amazing,” Abby said. “They both do so much.”
For more information about the Aces, email Abby at abbymoran70@gmail .com or go to @lancasteraces on Instagram.
The Lancaster Aces organization was founded by Mike Schmelder, and it was originally intended for at-risk youths. At Schmelder’s request, the Tillies joined the group at the end of 2021. “Solanco didn’t have an AAU program,” Darren said. “Our son (Kayden) had gone into basketball head deep, so we decided it would be a great opportunity to do that.”
