UPC to Host Annual Patriotic Organ Concert

Union Presbyterian Church (UPC) is adding a little extra flair to its annual patriotic organ concert this summer.
Always a big event at the church, located at 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood, the concert carries extra weight this year with the widespread celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
“It’s a little bit special this year,” said Martin Greenleaf, a member of the church’s ministry of music.
“(The concert) isn’t very religiously oriented. It’s more toward patriotic items.”
The show will take place on Sunday, July 5, at 6:30 p.m., one day after the Fourth of July. The concert is free to attend, but a freewill offering will be accepted
to benefit Solanco community organizations.
The organist will be Bob Trimble, a renowned local organist who performs two shows at Union Presbyterian annually - the summer patriotic concert and the Christmas organ concert, held in December. Trimble will be assisted by Rick Rineer and Glenn Hough, two other local organists.
Greenleaf said that Trimble’s organ shows usually draw between 90 and 200 people, ranging from locals to people from out of state.
“He plays patriotic songs, pop songs and classical show tunes,” he said. “There’s even some songs where he asks people to sing along.”

Anne Hendricks, outreach coordinator with All 4 Paws Rescue, a nonprofit, foster-based, all-breed organization located in Malvern, is familiar with the most common excuse potential pet foster parents give. “They all say, ‘I could never foster because I would want to adopt them all,’” noted Hendricks, who has fostered more than 100 dogs over
nine years. “We have all foster-failed at least once,” she added, referring to a foster dog she knew she would be keeping within the first 24 hours of fostering her.
According to Kisha Reinmiller, site director for Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center, many who foster do become adoptive pet parents. “We are always recruiting new fosters,” she shared. “A lot of them adopt for the first time.”

It’s a patriotic year for the Lancaster County Cruisers. The group, which holds its annual car show on the first Saturday of July every year, will present this year’s show on Saturday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street.

their cars, trucks and motorcycles. There is a fee to take part; the event will be held rain or shine. More than 20 trophies will be awarded, and the first 200 participants will receive a dash plaque.
Because of the event’s schedule, this year will not be the first time that it has been held over the holiday. Club member Judy Andrews said that she does not expect to lose attendees
with the holiday weekend.
“It’s done by 2:00, so people still have time to go on and do fireworks and picnics,” she said.
The Cruisers will have T-shirts available for purchase at the show. There will also be door prizes available. For food, there will be breakfast, hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages available. Lemonade, as well as the Mocha Motion Coffee truck, will be avail-
able for drinks. There will also be a DJ, who will mix in some patriotic tunes to match the occasion.
One big advantage that the Cruisers have over other summer car shows is the pavilion at the fire company.
“I’ve been to lots of car shows, and Judy has too,” said club member Christine Weir, who noted that club members can also gives attendees rides from the
parking area to the center of the field. “When it’s July or August, it’s hotter than blazes. You get your food and you’re in the sun; it’s hot. We actually have a pavilion in the shade, which is really nice.”
Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a community of motorcycle riders who support military causes, will have a stand.
Those attending the car show are asked to bring nonperishable canned goods to support the food pantry at the Willow Street United Church of Christ (UCC).
Proceeds from the registration fees and bake sale will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Hope’s Haven, Building Bridges, and Willow Street UCC.
The weather was not great for last year’s show, but the event still pulled in around 350 vehicles. Weir said that the show typically pulls in around 300 to 400 vehicles,
depending on weather and when the event falls on the calendar.
“We’ve always lucked out pretty good with the weather,” Andrews said.
“That’s why we started doing it rain or shine, because it’s too confusing for the food vendors to come when they have stuff the next day, then they can’t come.”
The club has been in existence since 1994. It meets on the second Sunday of every month at 6 p.m. at Willow Street UCC, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. Everyone is
antique car.
“We just like the people that are in it,” Andrews said. Weir added that the club is looking for new members to come to the show and to bring their significant other.
The club’s other major events include an annual Christmas party; outings to local restaurants; and trips to the Morgantown Auto Mall, located right on the border between Lancaster, Chester and Berks counties.

Reading Railroad Days Planned
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host its annual Reading Railroad Days from Wednesday, July 1, to Sunday, July 5, and Wednesday, July 8, to Saturday, July 11. Reading Railroad Days will take place during regular museum hours and will be included in the regular museum admission.
A detailed HO-scale model train layout of the Reading Railroad, operated by members of
the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society, is a centerpiece in the museum’s climate-controlled Rolling Stock Hall. Visitors also may view Reading Company equipment from the museum’s collection, including the 108-yearold tank engine No. 1251, the 95-year-old multiple unit commuter car No. 800, and the 188-year-old Rocket steam locomotive.

In its heyday, the Reading Company was a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the 94-mile line evolved into a large corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron making, canal and sea-going transportation, and shipbuilding. With its great complex of shops
for locomotive and car building and repair, and constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for over a century.

Greenleaf explained that the organ originally belonged to a theater company in New Jersey that defaulted on its payments following silent movies falling out of favor with the public. The organ company repossessed the organ, and it was then sold to somebody within UPC’s congregation, who later gifted it to the church.
“Our organ is very different than most church organs,” Greenleaf said. “It’s
so different sounding than a typical church organ, and that’s why people really enjoy hearing it in something like these concerts.”
The organ has been rebuilt many times over the years to help retain its quality. UPC has been operating the twice-annual organ concerts for about a decade, starting around when the church celebrated its 200th anniversary.
Greenleaf said that a quarter of attendees at the summer concert are typically retired members of the armed forces.
“One of the things (Trimble) does, he has a medley that has the theme song from the Army, Navy, the Air Force, the Coast Guard and all that,” Greenleaf said. “This medley plays each of those songs, the theme songs of that service. When your song is played, he asks the people that were in the Army to stand up, and so forth.”
There will be treats and fellowship following the concert. The church is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible.
UPC’s congregation meets at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Two adult Sunday school classes and a children’s Sunday school class (K-5) are also available, meeting at 9 a.m. on Sundays.

Both organizations reported that becoming a foster parent for an animal is not complicated. The Lancaster Center application can be found online at www.pspca.org, and the All 4 Paws application is at www.all4pawsrescue. com. Representatives of both organizations noted that the foster application is similar to the adoption application. “We process (the applications), and then we reach out,” said Reinmiller.
Hendricks pointed out that for potential fosters who already have pets, contacting the applicant’s vet is a crucial step. “We talk to the vet to be sure (the applicant’s) pets have been well taken care of,” she stated.
Once an applicant is approved, the organization will want to learn the type of animal the foster parent would like to take in. “A lot of folks have preferences, whether it’s a large or small dog, a cat, or kittens,” stated Reinmiller. Other questions may reference lifestyle and family size, such as whether the home is high traffic.
At All 4 Paws, foster coordinator Melissa Kuchinski will contact the approved applicant to discuss the age and size of a possible foster
dog and to learn whether small children or cats are present in the home. “We try to place (animals that) we think would work in that home,” explained Hendricks. Special attention is given to place animals with medical issues with more experienced foster caregivers, since these animals usually remain in foster care longer than the typical stay, which can range from a day or two to several months.
Meeting the animal that will be fostered is treated much like an adoption meeting at the Lancaster Center. If the meeting goes well, the foster care provider will receive crates, toys, food, and treats, and any necessary medical care will be covered.
“The fosters are not out-of-pocket for anything (at All 4 Paws),” explained Hendricks. “We give them the white glove treatment,” she added, noting that
the organization depends on donations to make that possible. Fosters also receive a list of rules that include instructions such as keeping a leash on the dog at all times. “Rescue dogs are a huge flight risk,” noted Hendricks. “It’s easier and safer to grab a leash than a dog.”
Training for dogs and foster parents can also be part of the mix. “We have training partners who work with us,” shared Hendricks, who recalled a dog she fostered who did not like to meet new people. “A training partner met with us for an hour and gave me hints, and (that dog is) now in a wonderful home,” she shared.
At the Lancaster Center, foster parents are given direct access to SPCA staff members even after hours. “We can counsel, provide handouts, or talk on the phone about what to do with certain behaviors,” explained Reinmiller, who reaches out to fosters weekly to see how things are going.
According to Reinmiller,
foster parents are a great source of information about the pet and provide photos and videos that help in the adoption process. “We are a municipal shelter contracted with local police to take strays,” explained Reinmiller, who noted that each dog is assessed at the center. “Foster homes are really helpful for us to get home knowledge for the dogs in our care … especially with dogs that are a little shy or have behavioral concerns or need medical care.”
Hendricks agreed, noting, “We can make a good match (for an adoptive home) using the information about the (pet provided by foster parents).”
Finding foster homes with volunteers who have had pets but do not have any at the moment is especially helpful because those foster parents have experience but are able to focus more on the animal being fostered.
Both organizations accept cats as well. “For the most part (with) cats,

LCCTC Students Compete at National Event
Three students from Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) recently traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The event took place from June 1 to 5.
Carly Hoffman placed first in the Dental Assisting - Secondary competition, and Ashton Gonzalez placed first in the Dental Assisting - Postsecondary competition. Both are students in the Dental Assistant program at LCCTC’s Willow Street campus. Hoffman is from Elizabethtown Area School District.
In addition, Alyssa Nessinger participated in the Advertising Design competition, placing 13th. Nessinger is from Cocalico School District and is enrolled in the Commercial Art program at LCCTC’s Brownstown campus.

it’s mostly kitten fostering,” said Reinmiller. “It’s socializing and housing until they are old enough to come to the shelter for adoption.” Kittens must be eight weeks old or weigh two pounds to stay at the shelter.
At All 4 Paws Rescue, both rescues and owner surrenders that are not immediately adopted go to foster homes the same day. “We like the foster care system because it gives the (pet) a home as opposed to a kennel,” said Hendricks. “It’s about whether we have a foster home (available) that will work,” she added, pointing out that foster homes are always needed. Reflecting on her own experience fostering, Hendricks stated that she has reaped many benefits. “It’s wonderful to be part of a dog’s journey,” she said.
