Like nearly every other organization, Black Rock Retreat (BRR), 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has been impacted by the shutdown due to COVID-19. While the impact on the Christian camping ministry’s finances is notable, the organization’s leaders used it as impetus to create new programs to meet its own needs and those of the community. “We have been working with several local food banks and churches to store and help order food as well as make some meals that have been distributed to local families. So far, we have supplied meals for almost 2,000 people in the Lancaster area,” BRR outdoor education director Jon Hill said on June 18. “We are also partnering with two local ministries to help provide

temporary, transitional emergency housing for families who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.” BRR has also created Family Weekend Getaways, a program to give family members the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and connect with each other. Dates are available every weekend in July. Check-in will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and checkout will be 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lodging will primarily be available in cabins or the retreat center, with all options including private bathrooms. A limited number of tent campsites are available for those who want a more rustic experience. Additionally, meal packages will be offered to take the stress out of cooking. Hill noted that the menus will be planned by BRR’s chef and will include family-friendly options. See Black Rock Retreat pg 2

The concerts feature the church’s rare 1939 organ made by the United States Pipe Organ Company, which began its life accompanying silent movies in a theater. “This has been very popular with us and the community,” said event coordinator Martin Greenleaf. “We get to showcase our rare pipe organ and the talents of our wonderful organist, Bob Trimble.” Trimble performs rousing renditions of marches, military hymns, theatrical songs, and more during See Patriotic Concert pg 3
