Planning Commission Presents Awards Quarryville Elementary’s Student Senate Receives Recognition places2040, the Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan. Annual Tour To Highlight Local Gardens he second annual Porches and Posies Garden Tour will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9. Southern End gardens will be featured in the self-directed tour, which will benefit Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. The first edition of the event drew visitors locally and from outside the area. “Some of us had the SOL

idea this would make a great community event,” said organizer Anna Mary Barcus. “I’m just really excited to do this again this year.” This year’s Porches and Posies Garden Tour will feature 12 new garden stops, which will display a variety of garden styles and growing conditions, including a cut flower garden, examples of outdoor living and two Amish gardens. “We try to have a nice assortment of styles,

realistic but inspirational and achievable,” Barcus said. One of the gardens on the tour is at the home of Kendra Herr. Features of her yard include a small barn, a stone patio with a fire pit and a screened-in porch attached to the home and deck. Herr’s property is full of flower beds planted mostly with perennials and shrubs. She also enjoys container gardening and has pots of colorful annual arrangements throughout the property that contain plants such as Lantana, Coleus and Setcresea Purple Heart. Because areas of her yard include both full sun and almost full shade, Herr is able to use all kinds of plants and flowers. Herr, who said that the goal is to make her outside as inviting as the inside of her home, describes gardening as therapeutic. “I’m not a Master Gardener, and I started off knowing nothing, so hopefully I can inspire others that they can do it, too,” said Herr. “You have to want to learn and be willing to ask questions. The more you (garden), the better you get at it.”

After a two-year absence because of the pandemic, Promise Players, a community Christian theater group, will once again present a live performance, which will take place at a new venue. “Smoke on the Mountain,” a musical comedy, will be performed by Promise Players on Friday, July 8, through Sunday, July 10,

Program To Offer Free Admission The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, joins museums nationwide again this summer in the Blue Star Museums initiative, a program that provides free admission to currently serving United States military personnel and their families. The program will run through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard as well as members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, and NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID) or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum. The garden tour event was created last year as a fundraiser to help Chestnut Level Church with the cost of recent renovations to the sanctuary. “ We had some major sanctuary renovations done in 2021 and 2022,” Barcus said. “It’s a church-sponsored event, but it’s really for the entire community.” The garden tour will run rain or shine on July 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on July 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants may complete their tour in one day or take a leisurely pace over both days to enjoy all 12 stops. Those who purchase tickets by Friday, July 1, will receive a discount. For advance tickets, call Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church at 717-548-2763. Finally, the family members arrive, and they begin their first musical number. The audience is introduced to the various family members. who share testimonies about their beliefs, which leads to some funny stories. Typically, Promise Players, which was formed in 1995 by church member Doreen Creighton, performs at its home theater at Lampeter Church of the Brethren. “The church location was not ready for the crowds we get for the performances,” Strawser said. “Rawlinsville Camp Meeting came to mind, which has an open-air tabernacle.” Each year, he noted, a local charity benefits from the Promise Players’ performances. This year’s beneficiary will be Rawlinsville Camp Meeting. More information about the facility is available at www.rawlinsvillecamp.com. Strawser noted that the theater board chooses the play. “We look at family-type plays and musicals. ‘Smoke on the Mountain’ was off-Broadway for a few years back in the 1990s, so its rights are more expensive,” said Strawser. “One of our audience members came to Doreen a few years ago and (suggested) the play and ... the benefactor has paid for the rights - an anonymous donor.” A suggested minimum donation will be payable at the door. Children age 12 and under may bring a canned good or pay a nominal fee. The food items will be donated to the Blessings Pantry at Lampeter Unit-

According to cast member Tim Strawser, who is also the director, the play was scheduled to be performed two years ago but was shut down in 2020 four days before opening night. “After a twoyear wait due to COVID-19 precautions, we are pleased to be able to offer this longanticipated show,” he stated. The play, set in June 1938 in North Carolina, tells the story of the singing Sanders family, which, after a fiveyear hiatus, is set to perform its traditional and bluegrass

Zimmerman received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his more than 30 years of work, particularly as Warwick Township manager. The Solanco High School Odyssey of the Mind team finished sixth out of approximately 50 teams competing at the recent World Finals, held at Iowa State University. Sixth is the first position that is publicly announced at the awards ceremony at the 14,000seat Hilton Coliseum, making this year’s team the first Solanco team to reach the podium. Previous Solanco teams finished 13th out of 42 in 2014 and seven out of 15 in 2021. In a typical year, more than 250 cars are on display, and the show goes rain or shine. “We take our chances,” Parke said. Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration cost per vehicle. Dash plaques will go to the first 150 registrants. Numerous trophies, door prizes and cash prizes will be presented throughout the day. Cars owned by members of the Lancaster County Cruisers are not eligible for trophies or prizes. Trophies are donated by local businesses and sponsors, who personally select the winners. While the cars are an attraction for automotive enthusiasts, family members can also find something to enjoy. Live music will be provided all day by DJ Jeff Grimaldi. Vendor booths will also be on the grounds with a wide variety of merchandise to peruse. Food, beverages and ice cream will be available to purchase, and there will be a sale of baked goods. There is no admission fee for the public, and plenty of parking will be available. Visitors are asked to bring nonperishable food items to support the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. Proceeds from this year’s event will also go to the food bank. Lancaster County Cruisers was founded in 1994 and welcomes any car, truck or motorcycle enthusiast. The club holds monthly meetings and other events in addition to the annual car show.
