Cruisers Plan 20th Annual Car Show

“Ride it, push it, tow it - we’ll accept it,” said Lancaster County Cruisers member Gary Heim of Willow Street, inviting owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles to enter the club’s 20th annual car show on Saturday, July 6.

In addition to no requirement for the vehicle to be operational, there are no rules regarding age, make, or model.

“Bring anything; we don’t discriminate,” said club vice president Jack Parke of New Providence.

“We get some cool hot rods and rat rods,” club member Barry Harsh of Mountville commented.

“Even some barn finds,” Parke added.

Club member Don Teeter of Willow Street is the proud owner of an antique 1983 Honda Accord SE. It might be surreal to think of vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s as classic or antique cars, but according to the Pennsylvania Code, an antique vehicle is any that has been manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year.

organs within a few weeks. He related that the same song played on both instruments sounded different.

“Tibias tend not to be present on church organs,” Trimble said as he sat at the console of Union’s organ, which includes a rank of the large, stopped, wood flute pipes named for the ancient Greek wind instrument also called an aulos. Rather, tibias are characteristic of theater organs.

“It’s a fairly rare organ. There were only 200 ever made,” pointed out Union member Marty Greenleaf. “It was repossessed from a theater.”

“That’s how a lot of churches got these organs,” Trimble added. “They were cheap. It was a win-win.”

caught on, the organ was no longer needed, and the theater defaulted on the loan. The congregation bought the instrument in 1931, and it has remained in service since then.

“They had to build an edifice on the outside to house the pipes,” Trimble said, noting that the box at the front of the sanctuary that houses the pipes is much deeper than it appears.

In the 1990s, the console was converted from mechanical operation to an electric solid-state, which improved its reliability.

Following the partial rebuild in 2015, the church held its first patriotic concert.

“We wanted to make more use of (the organ),” Greenleaf explained. “People who won’t come in for church music will come for (patriotic concerts).”

The concerts have become an annual affair, and this year’s will be held on Sunday, June 30, at 7 p.m. The doors will open at 6 p.m.

With this shift, the decision was made for the Outback Trading Retail Store to close its doors as of June 30, 2019. W hile the store in downtown Oxford will close at this date, Oxford local and longtime business partner Ron Hersey will be opening a new store that will carry Outback Trading Company products within the second half of 2019.

Outback Trading Company and Wilson King have been part of downtown Oxford’s revitalization efforts over the years and will continue to work with Oxford Mainstreet and the Oxford Borough to find other retailers and businesses to fill the vacant warehouse and storefront spaces. The Outback Trading Store will be open through the end of the month with specials. Following the close of the store, customers will still be able to order Outback Trading Company products at www.out backtrading.com.

There is no cost to attend, but donations will be accepted for the upkeep of the organ. “ We invest about $30,000 every five years,” Greenleaf said.

Additionally, the instrument is tuned twice a year at the cost of $1,200 each time.

“There’s a lot to maintain,” Trimble added.

The June 30 concert will include a mix of patriotic music and show tunes. At some point during the concert, Trimble will play the theme songs of every branch of the United States armed forces to honor veterans.

He also plans to perform favorites from “The Sound of Music” and “My Fair Lady,” as well as composers John Philip Sousa and George M. Cohan.

“I try to play a variety of music people will like,” Trimble said. “I try to keep it to an hour, but if people stay to hear more, I’ll keep playing.”

Trimble began studying music in third grade, when he started five years of piano lessons. He took one year of organ lessons in high school and first played in church in 1975. “I basically taught myself,” he said.

Trimble has served as the organist at Union off and on for 12 years. He has been the organist for the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania for 11 years, and he served as the organist for the Grand Lodge of the Eastern Star.

He has played at Longwood Gardens and on other notable organs on the East Coast.

Theater Will Present “Annie” Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster, will present the musical “Annie.”

Performances will run from Thursday, June 27, through Saturday, Aug. 10.

“Annie” includes the songs “It’s A Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile,” “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here,” “Maybe” and “Tomorrow.”

Inspired by a Depression-era comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” the show was brought to Broadway in 1977, winning the Tony for Best Musical and running for more than 2,300 performances. In 1982, it

was made into a film. Since then, the show has been performed all over the world.

“Annie” will feature a cast of professional adult actors, local children and a dog. The cast will feature Piper Sobon as Annie, Victor Legarreta as Oliver Warbucks, Meagan Michelson as Miss Hannigan, Bennett Leeds as Rooster, and Theresa Walker as Lily St. Regis. The cast will also include 20 local youths including Emily Beckman, Zoe Buchanan, Cora Cook, McKenna Donaldson, Olivia Eichler, Julie Eshenauer, Paige Fairbanks, Carly Geiter, Abby Leiboff, Clara Mecouch, Scarlett Meyer, Addison Niven, Arabelle Petersheim, Mychaela Rosario, Raya Samuel, Jayda Segal, Alyssa Shreiner, Grace Signor and Ariana Stambaugh. The youths will be double cast into two teams.

The Kiwanis Club of Southern Lancaster held a charter celebration earlier this year at The Willows in Strasburg. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles, lizards, a rabbit, and a bird. Children will have the opportunity to earn free ice cream through a scavenger hunt while they are also learning about the world.

Another change to Global Fair is a different layout.

Rather than organizing the fair into geographic regions as in the past, there will be four new areas: The lively Global Village will feature workers from around the world and various community organizations. The Adventure Zone will have the petting zoo and children’s activities. The World Stage will offer entertainment throughout the day. The International Food Court will sell food from more than a dozen places.

“The food is a favorite part of the fair for many people,” Derksen commented. “To be able to enjoy amazing food from East and West Africa, Nepal, Latin America, or Europe in the same location is quite unique. From injera to pinchos and from stroopies to hot dogs, you’ll find it at Global Fair.”

The decision to leave Ghana and study in the United States was further complicated since Emmanuel had met his future wife, Alice, and they were planning their wedding.

“March 24, 2012, was my wedding day. The same day I got a letter from LBC telling me that I got a scholarship,” Emmanuel said. After much discussion with his new wife, Emmanuel decided to leave Ghana and pursue his education at LBC, where he eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in student ministry, biblical studies and communication and a Master of Arts in leadership studies.

When preaching in the villages, he wanted someone to help him translate,” said Emmanuel, who is fluent in English. “Since I was born and raised in Ghana and settled in different villages, I am able to speak the dialect. I went to preach with him, and we became friends. He returned to the United States and he called me one day and said he wanted me to attend Bible college in the United States. I didn’t say yes

In the village of Georgetown, there is a place where students with special needs gather three days a week. Guided by up to five teachers, the students at the Sunny Sunbeam Center begin their days with devotions and then spend time in song. Ranging in age from 15 to 30, the students take part in a variety of planned activities including lessons, news time, and crafts.

Sunny Sunbeam is one of seven centers that exist to give adults and children with special needs from the Plain community a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work, and to offer their families respite.

The other centers are Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow.

To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction.

This year’s auction will be the 13th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at

On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard, tasks Sadie noted that they enjoy.

Sadie began working with the children at Penn Johns Sunbeam when she was asked to fill in for another teacher for a year. She spent three years there, and she has been at Sunny Sunbeam for eight years now. “I am so blessed.

I just love (my work with the students),” she said.

Sadie, who is one of the teachers, said that making gift items and other productive tasks is just one of the activities students take part in at the center from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school.

Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. “The children love to bring things along,” said Sadie. The center also provides haystack meals similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs.

Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee.

Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out.

Organizations Partner To Host PDPM Boot Camp Kairos Health Systems worked with Value Care Alliance (VCA) recently to promote a Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) Boot Camp presented by Stephanie Corbett, DHA, of HCPro. Skilled nursing facility participants located in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee attended the program in preparation for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) post-acute care valuebased care management program, which begins in October 2019.

Because a significant percentage of high intensity care is delivered in the postacute care setting after discharge from the hospital, Kairos Health Systems and Value Care Alliance worked together to provide this program to prepare skilled nursing facilities to successfully meet the requirements of the PDPM program, which promotes meeting the increasing health care needs of patients with complex medical needs and providing the highest quality, satisfaction, and cost standards of care.

Kairos worked with VCA to provide the HCPro PDPM Boot Camp for its post-acute care partners. The HCPro PDPM Boot Camp provided organizations with a comprehensive review of the service requirements necessary to prepare them for new higher acuity post-acute care delivery models and develop a plan to prepare for participation with PDPM, bundled payments, and other payer value-based care requirements.

2019 Parade of Homes Winners Announced The Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes Gala was held on June 14 at the Lancaster Country Club to kick off the Parade of Homes by recognizing all entries and announcing the winning homes. Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by the Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA), the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for touring. This year’s event featured 29 new single-family homes and townhome/duplexes from 18 different builders. The Parade of Homes ran from June 15 to 23.

Each year, when new builders participate in the Parade of Homes, the highest point scorer is recognized with the Alpha Award. The 2019 winner is Turnberry Construction Group for 525 Cheltenham Court, Lititz (Entry 21).

Sarah Irwin, Nottingham, was one of 15 Northampton Community College students who recently graduated from the college’s Leadership Class. Over the course of 12 weeks, Irwin and her classmates enjoyed many opportunities, including visiting Martin Guitar to tour its museum and attending a retreat at the Fowler Family Southside Center’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). At the CIE the class participated in a Strengths Finder and MyersBriggs Test activity.

Students are selected for the class from a pool of candidates through an application process, which includes a formal interview. These students discovered their leadership traits and strengthened their team-building and communication skills.

The Octoraro Hotel & Tavern hosted the first Covered Bridge Motorcycle Ride on April 28 to benefit the American Cancer Society and Oxford Mainstreet Inc. More than 25 local businesses supported the ride, and 130 riders participated in the event. The two-hour trip crossed eight covered bridges. The ride wrapped up at the Octoraro Hotel & Tavern with live entertainment and prizes. New Book Features Photographs Of Lancaster County “Seasons of Lancaster County: Home to the World’s Largest Amish Community,” a new book by Don Shenk, has been published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd. More than 100 color photographs capture the four seasons of Lancaster County, with its covered bridges, cottage industries, historic sites, and Amish community at work and play.

Shenk is a lifetime resident of Lancaster County and has been a photographer for more than five decades. He is a lifetime member of New Danville Fire Company, where he is active as a firefighter/photographer. He also uses his photography skills at Central Manor Church, which he has attended all his life. Shenk was a charter member of the Lancaster Camera Club and has served as its president twice. In 2016, he was made senior fellow of Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography (WIEP), a distinction given to the select few who have had more than a hundred entries accepted into the juried international show.

Beverly H. Rampaul of the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office was scheduled to begin a three-year term as secretary of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PABA) at the close of the association’s annual meeting on May 17 in Lancaster. Rampaul has previously served on the PBA Board of Governors from 2013 to 2016 and currently sits on the PBA House of Delegates. She is the cochair of the PBA Minority Bar Committee Government Attorneys Subcommittee.

Rampaul is a graduate of Lafayette College and the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, where she served as the senior associate editor of the Dickinson Journal of International Law. She also is a graduate of the National Criminal Defense College and the National Judicial College’s ABA/ABOTA National Trial Academy.

Hospitals Receive Awards WellSpan Health announced that it and six of its hospitals were named 2018 award recipients through the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge.

The goal is to increase promotion and awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donations. A single donor can save eight lives and positively impact more than 100 more through tissue donation, according to the American Transplant Foundation.

Ephrata Community Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, and WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital earned Platinum Awards. Chambersburg Hospital earned the Gold Award. Overall, WellSpan Health received the health system Platinum Award by the Donate Life Hospital Challenge.

WellSpan is a part of the Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge each year in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Center for Organ Recovery and Education, and the Gift of Life Donor Program.

HDC MidAtlantic has hired Euvaline Ellington as its new director of property management.

In her new role, Ellington is responsible for overall strategic direction of HDC MidAtlantic’s property management and overseeing an expanding 3,700-plus unit affordable housing portfolio in the Mid-Atlantic region. Ellington strives to ensure that HDC MidAtlantic’s affordable housing communities are managed to meet all financial, physical, regulatory, and industry performance standards and enhance overall quality life for the residents and communities HDC MidAtlantic serves.

Ellington has more than 25 years of property management experience. She spent more than 10 years as regional manager with Ingerman Management Company in Collingswood, N.J., and before that served as the director of asset and property management for North East Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation, a nonprofit in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ellington comes to HDC MidAtlantic with experience working in both private and nonprofit sectors.

A disc jockey will play oldies music, and there will be a muffler rap competition. Food vendors will sell burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, fruit cups, and beverages. There will also be a bakery table.

The show will also include a flea market, and there will be a number of booths selling automotive supplies, window-cleaning products, jewelry, handbags, and more. Additionally, the Hogs and Heroes Foundation will have a stand with information about the community of motorcycle riders that supports public safety, the U.S. military, and Wounded Warriors.

Parke noted that the show appears to be a little bigger each year. “We’re getting a lot of influx from Maryland and Chester County,” he observed.

Dash plaques will be given to the first 200 entries. Harsh estimated that approximately 315 vehicles were entered in last year’s show. “That’s not counting ours,” he said. “Our cars aren’t judged.”

All of the prizes are reserved for nonmembers. “We have loads of trophies, cash prizes, and tons of door prizes,” Parke remarked.

On Saturday, June 29, The Shops @ Rockvale will present its annual fireworks show and other activities, including a concert by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band. The events will take place at Route 30 and Willowdale Drive, Lancaster.

From 4 to 6 p.m., Casey from an area radio station will be onsite giving out free cookbooks and signing them. From 4 to 9 p.m., various food trucks will offer burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, soft pretzels, fries, ice cream, and more. Three inflatables will be set up during this time as well.

Face painting and a balloon artist will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. Live music will be provided by the band Forgiven from 6 to 8 p.m.

From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., patriotic music will be performed by the Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band in the parking lot behind Rockvale Diner. After 9:15 p.m., the 15th annual fireworks display will be set off.

In the event of rain, the fireworks and activities will be moved to Sunday, June 30.

At the annual Travelers Protective Association (TPA) Pennsylvania Division convention, which was held recently, two TPA Post D Lancaster members were elected to the state TPA board of directors. Margaret Keebler of Lancaster was elected to the position of Zone 3 director. Her husband, George Keebler, was elected to the position of TPA state second vice president.

Margaret is currently the Post D TPA president, and George is the post’s communications chairman. The couple was inducted by Wayne Wentworth, TPA national president.

TPA is a community service and safety-minded association that stresses the national safety slogan: “As you drive, watch that child.”

Giant To Open Quarryville Store On June 28 Giant Food Stores will celebrate the grand opening of its new Quarryville store located at 100 TownsEdge Drive on Friday, June 28, at 8 a.m.

Giant entered into an agreement to acquire the location from Ferguson & Hassler last month. The new Quarryville Giant, including the fuel station and café, will now operate on Sundays. The National Endowment for the Arts Acting announced 57 awards totaling $4.1 million supporting projects across the nation through the Arts Endowment’s Our Town program. Lancaster Public Art, in partnership with the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College, is one of the recommended organizations for a grant of $75,000 for the PACE (Public Art Community Engagement) Boosting Communities program.

PACE Boosting Communities is a partnership between the City of Lancaster and the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College to support more art-based community development in neighborhoods by building the capacity of local artists and community organizations. A cohort of six Lancaster-based artists will work in their own neighborhood to create and produce small public art projects over the course of two years.

At the culmination of the twoyear period, there will be a larger scale temporary public art installation and the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College will present hold an exhibition showcasing the artists’ efforts. PACE Boosting Communities will augment current efforts of neighborhood partners in southwest and southeast Lancaster in empowering residents to take part in revitalization efforts by increasing accessibility to individuals who may face barriers, such as time or language, to attending public meetings.

The grant requires a 1:1 match.
