Quarryville Residents Invited To Decorate Their Porches For The Holiday
National Exhibit To Feature Artwork By Solanco Graduate BY FRANCINE FULTON
work of art that features a realistic image of fresh red beets has earned Caroline Drumm, a member of the Class of 2022 at Solanco High School, a spot in a national art exhibit to be held in Washington, D.C. Caroline will represent Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District in the exhibit, titled “An Artistic Discovery: The 41st Annual National Congressional Art Exhibition.” Her painting, “Fresh Organic Beets,” along with award-winning artwork from congressional districts across the nation, will be on view for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the United States Capitol. The Cannon Tunnel is one of the most highly traveled access points between the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Capitol. Every day, members of Congress, visitors and tens of thousands of tourists from the United States and abroad will be able to view the artwork as they travel through the tunnel. After an application process, Caroline learned about the honor from Rep. Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District, who hosted an artist’s reception in June at Garden Spot Art Gallery in New Holland. “Lloyd Smucker sent my art teacher an email before the ceremony and suggested I come because I would not be disappointed,” Caroline recalled. “I wasn’t sure how many were entering, and I knew that there would be competition. There are a lot of good artists out there.” When presenting the award to Caroline, Smucker stated, “I am honored to take your winning work to the halls of Congress for millions of people from all over the world to enjoy.”

Quarryville Borough is holding its second annual Patriotic Porch Decorating Contest to celebrate America on Independence Day and promote community spirit. The idea for the contest was generated last year when borough manager Scott Peiffer and public events coordinator Michelle Evans saw a similar holiday decorating contest in Christiana Borough. COVID-19 restrictions were still in effect and a community-wide activity seemed like a good way to bring people together. “I said to Scott, ‘That would be awesome to do in the borough,’ and that’s how it came to be,” Evans said. “Borough council See Decorating Contest pg 10 Rep. Registration for the 2022 Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest is open. Youths and adults who create with wool are encouraged to enter the state contest. Any youth or adult who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers is eligible to enter. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Sept. 6. Several categories are available, including preteens ages 8 to 12, juniors ages 13 to 16, seniors ages 17 to 24, and made for others, wherein both the model and contestant may be any age. Judging will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging will be based on several criteria, including the appropriateness of the garment to the contestant’s lifestyle, the garment’s fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction quality, creativity in design and use of wool, and how well the garment conveys/promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. The winners of the junior and senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest in Fort Worth, Texas, in January 2023. The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. Other prizes will also be awarded. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric or yarn used. The wedding of Lori Hess and Neal Lefever took place on Dec. 11, 2021, at Refton Brethren in Christ Church in Refton. The Rev. Scott MacFeat officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Charles and Lois Hess of Pequea. She graduated from Penn Manor High School in 2003 and Millersville University in 2007. She is employed by Lancaster County Career & Technology Center in Willow Street. The groom is the son of Richard and Audrey Lefever of Peach Bottom. He graduated from Solanco High School in 2008 and is employed by P.L. Weaver & Company in New Holland. The matron of honor was Jacqueline Brenner of Lancaster, and the best man was Aaron Whitley of Avon, Ind. The wedding attendant was Tina Beam, cousin of the bride. The bride was given in marriage by her parents. She wore a white ball gown with a V neck and various appliques, and she carried a bouquet of red roses, white roses, baby’s breath and greens. Solanco Honors Class Of 2022 Solanco School District (SSD) honored 250 graduating seniors at its 2022 commencement ceremony on June 8. The event, held at the Solanco High School football stadium, featured speeches f ro m a d m i n i s t ra t o r s , students, and a guest speaker. The ceremony began with the presentat i o n o f co l o rs by t he Young Marines of Lancaster County and the singing of the national anthem by students Holden Green, Lilia McHugh, Aden Jackson, Gwenyth We l k , a n d C as s a n d ra Wright. Students and supporters were welcomed by district superintendent Brian A. Bliss. In his remarks, Bliss advised graduates not to focus on the past few years but rather look at the body of accomplishments from
kindergarten to the present. “In those years between then and now, you’ve had some successes, some setbacks. You’ve had some course-corrections. You may actually have had some sharp turns, he said. “All of that, however, led you to this moment here tonight.” Bliss went on to encourage the gathering, saying, “I know the challenges of the past few years may dominate your remembrance of school. You will also face challenges after tonight, but you’re ready for those. Absolutely, you are.” The distinguished speaker for the 2022 commencement ceremony was retired Swift Middle School teacher Blake Deibler, who taught at Solanco for 34 years. He also served as a parttime pastor at Wesley
Church in Quarryville for the last 19 years of his career. After his retirement i n 2012, Deibler became a full-time pastor and is still the lead pastor at Wesley Church. Deibler’s speech focused on “What Goes Around, Comes Around.” Although typically thought of with a negative connotation, Deiber pointed out that this saying should be looked at positively. “Here’s what I’m believing about this Class of 2022: You can be the generation that can start sowing kindness, sowing gentleness, sowing a care for one another so that what goes around comes around.” Salutatorian Owen Brazelton gave the evening’s first student speech. Brazelton looked back on being diagnosed with a lemon-sized brain tumor in eighth grade and the kindness shown to him during his battle, which included surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and a long recovery. “The exper i e n c e tau g ht me t he value of shaping one’s future to benefit the lives of others, to feel their joy

The American Heart Association (AHA) welcomed more than 130 supporters to the Lancaster Heart Ball on April 30 at the Lancaster Country Club. It was the first time the event was held in person since February 2020. The campaign raised nearly $120,000 for the AHA. Katelyn Smith of WGAL 8 hosted the dinner program, which recognized event sponsors and volunteers for their contributions to the AHA and its work in the community. The event also recognized local health care leaders and presented its first Live Fierce, Take Action Award to Dr. Michael Ripchinski, chief clinical officer at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “Today we rededicate this beautiful amphitheater that was built in 1962,” said Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) summer music committee series and board member Tony Kirchner as he welcomed more than 50 attendees to the LPAF rededication of the amphitheater on May 26. The rededication took place exactly 60 years after the amphitheater became a fixture at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. “We are able to do what we do because of your dedication
and commitment to our mission,” Kirchner told the gathering, singling out Wickersham Construction and WGAL for their sponsorship from the beginning. He noted that Sundays during the summer through Aug. 28 will be marked by the presence of national and international recording artists on the stage. Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace spoke following Kirchner. She recognized former mayors Charlie Smithgall and Art Morris, both in attendance. “This institution … is a labor of love that has been happening
for 60 years,” said Sorace, who also recognized LPAF board members. Dave Wauls, past LPAF president had created a trivia quiz about the amphitheater for attendees to complete. Using true and false questions, he queried guests about the entertainers who have performed there - no Ricky Martin, but Arlo Guthrie and his daughter made an appearance. Wauls also entertained with ice breakers that involved sharing memories of concerts. Tom Ellis, interim president of LPAF, spoke about
the history of the amphitheater, starting in 1957. “The iconic structure was a vision getting ready to be fulfilled,” he said of the amphitheater, pointing out that Armstrong created the roof of the structure, which only needed its first repairs this year. He noted that the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning See Long’s Park pg 16

Smithgall’s cannons were part of those presentations for 35 years. Ellis added that Pat Boone, Emmett Kelly Jr., and Red Skelton have all performed at the park. In 1979, the Arts and Crafts Festival, as it was called then, became a fundraiser. “It remains the single biggest contributor and one of the top art festivals on the Eastern Seaboard,” said Ellis. Father and son team Richard and Rick Faulkner kicked off that first festival. Rick was present at the rededication and received a round of applause from the group. Last year, 200 volunteers participated in organizing and running the art festival, but the organization can always use more helpers. Ellis pointed out that board members are volunteers. “All of this is a community service,” he said. “We are grateful for the entire board.” LPAF board member Janice Henry spoke about upcoming events and fundraisers the organization has planned, and Kirchner closed the event.
