Strasburg Senior Citizens Celebrates 60th Anniversary

For six decades, the Strasburg Senior Citizens has been an organization unlike most others.
The group is not the average Rotary, Kiwanis or Lions Club, although it shares many of the same charitable causes.
The group, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in May, is a special place for those age 50 and older to fraternize, enjoy activities and forge a unique connection to the area and to each other.
A member of the Graybill family has been a part of the group for most of its existence.
Kay Graybill is the group’s only active third-generation member; her grandmother and mother were both also active members in the past.

Benefit Auction to Support Clinic Program on Camargo Mill
The Clinic for Special Children (CSC), a nonprofit medical practice that provides affordable health care to children and adults with rare genetic disorders, will hold its 35th annual Lancaster County Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 20, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. The auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. A breakfast buffet will open at 6:30 a.m.
The items to be auctioned include handmade quilts, handcrafted furniture, new bedroom suites, toys and collectibles, storage sheds, lawn furniture, crafts, farm supplies, and gift certificates. The event will also offer a silent auction with unique
items for bids. A variety of food will be available, including barbecue chicken, pork sandwiches, subs, french fries, freshly made pies, doughnuts, whoopie pies, and ice cream.
The funds raised from the annual benefit auctions provide nearly half of the CSC’s annual operating budget and allow the clinic to continue to provide affordable, specialized care to families facing rare genetic diseases. Each year, seven auctions across the country are held to support CSC. Since 1990, these auctions have raised close to $22 million to support the CSC’s mission. The Solanco Historical Society will hold a meeting on Saturday, June 20, at 1:30 p.m. at its archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. Stanley White, the president of the historical society, will present a program on the Camargo Mill.
The Camargo Mill was built by Henry S. Breneman long before there was a village called Camargo. Since 1905, the mill has also been known as Rohrer’s Mill and was one of the largest and best-equipped mills in the county. The complex once featured the grist mill, which is still standing; a cider mill; a saw mill; and a distillery. The program is free and open to the public.

PCA&D, which is located at 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, offers eight undergraduate degree programs, as well as continuing education opportunities and certificates in a wide array of design, art and creative disciplines. This fall, the college will be offering a new course in creative writing.
“Education helps people develop not just knowledge, but perspec-
tive,” said Barnes. “It teaches us how to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with others and adapt to change. Creative education is especially important right now because society increasingly needs people who can innovate, connect ideas and bring humanity into complex challenges. In an AI-driving world, uniquely human skills - imagination, ethics, empathy and vision - become even more essential. Education also builds
community.”
In May, PCA&D graduated 93 students. There are currently more than 400 students enrolled in PCA&D programs for the fall of 2026, about 70 percent of whom hail from Pennsylvania.
“It leaves an imprint on you for sure,” said Oakly Buscarino, a 2026 graduate of PCA&D. “It’s a wacky collective of students from a variety of backgrounds and identities - you’re bound to have common interests with someone else. Socially, it’s very fun and supportive - classes have a different vibe. The atmosphere can be professional but also collaborative, and it’s easy to develop a synergy between the classmates and the professors. Overall, it’s very welcoming and supportive.”
“Our faculty combine technical instruction with mentorship, collaboration and hands-on learning,” said Barnes. “Students learn through studio practice, critiques, real-world projects and interdisciplinary experiences. Our faculty are working artists too, so they integrate their real-world experiences into coursework and class discussions. We also emphasize adaptability. Creative careers continue to evolve rapidly, so students need to know how to learn, pivot and apply their skills in different environments. Faculty work closely with students to help them develop both creative confidence and professional readiness.”
“(The students are) creative, thoughtful and incredibly motivated,” said Barnes. “Many are looking for a place where they can authentically and unapologetically be themselves and explore how creativity connects to their future. Today’s students are also deeply aware of the world around them. They care about community, identity, technology, social issues and making meaningful contributions. They want careers, but they also want purpose and impact. What’s exciting is seeing how they apply creativity beyond traditional expectations, whether it’s in design, entrepreneurship, health care, entertainment, technology, education or nonprofit work.”
The staff at PCA&D is made up of 19 full-time faculty members, 76 part-time or adjunct faculty and 36 staff members.
PCA&D was established in 1982. Over the past 44 years, the institution has added more academic offerings, developed community partnerships and participated in and promoted public events.

Heritage Sunday Set at Boehm’s Chapel
The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold its annual Heritage Sunday on June 28 in the historic chapel at 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street.
The event will start with a business meeting at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., the worship service will include a play about Martin and Eve Boehm, performed by the husband-andwife team of Joan and Barry Trout. Dale Mylin, the society’s president, will speak on the 10th anniversary of the Mennonite Conference reinstating Martin Boehm as bishop emeritus. There will be hymns and Scripture readings.
At 5 p.m., a hayride will be offered to the Boehm homestead, down the hill from the chapel.
There will also be an open house of the chapel and the tying shed, the chapel’s auxiliary building, until 6 p.m.
Martin and Eve Boehm hosted a class for early Methodists in their home and barn starting in 1775, the beginnings of what became today’s Boehm’s United Methodist Church. The chapel, erected in 1791, was the first structure built for Methodist worship in Lancaster County and the third in the country. It was restored to its 1791 appearance in 1991.

worked part time; it was more a way to just get out. And my grandma, at that age, she would just get a place to go out and meet other people. It just feels right to be in a group that they were a part of.”
The group meets at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. There is a small door fee to pay for the rental of the fire hall. People from all around the county are members, although most are from Strasburg, Paradise, Quarryville, Ronks and the surrounding towns. The meetings typically consist of fellowship, live entertainment, bingo,
and informative speakers that are of particular interest to seniors.
“All kinds of things to entertain,” described Graybill. “We also do some community service. We’ve been collecting food for the bank at the First Presbyterian Church; the last couple months we provided sleeping bags for the Tenfold homeless shelter program.”
The group has around 35 active members, Graybill said. At the group’s June meeting, they will formally celebrate their sixth decade of existence.
Former members have been invited back to reminisce and share stories of the past.
The group was launched in 1966 by Richard Chambers and Joseph
Gonder, two men who were both referred to as “some of Strasburg’s most prominent citizens,” per old editions of the Strasburg Heritage Society’s magazine.
Outside of its monthly meetings, the group has restaurant meetups and theater outings around Lancaster County and takes bus trips beyond the immediate area.
“I think we are a little unique,” Graybill said. “For 60 years we’ve maintained this organization, which is really hard at any day and age. I belong to several other groups, and it’s like pulling teeth to get them to do things anymore. It’s been fun to have a group that is willing to do the work and have fun.”
Bird Club Plans Field Trip
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will offer a field trip exploring Lancaster Conservancy’s Ferncliff Wildlife and Wildflower Preserve and nearby Bald Eagle Road in Drumore on Sunday, June 21, at 7 a.m. The trip is free and open to the public.
