Solanco Tuba Player Has Notable Musical Career olden Green, a member of the Class of 2022 at Solanco High School, recently completed his high school musical career on one of the less widely played instruments - the tuba. His most recent accomplishment prior to graduation was being selected to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Music Festival held in April at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in the Poconos. Through the audition process, Holden progressed through the district and regional levels before being selected to the state orchestra. Only 16 tuba players are selected for ensembles in the state. Scott Weyman, head of the music department at Solanco, traveled to the festival with Holden. Playing the tuba runs in the family. Holden’s dad, Matt, also played the tuba at the state level in 1990 and 1991. “I started playing (tuba) the summer before my ninth-grade year of high school,” Holden said. “I had

home football games and at halftime during away games. The band also took part in local parades and showcases, although many of those events were canceled during the pandemic, when Holden was a sophomore and junior. He explained that the tuba section of the band provides rhythm and harmony to the music. “The cool thing about marching band is we get a lot of cool riffs. There is a lot of cool harmonies on the tuba,” he noted. “You are noticed more if you play a melody instrument, but people look up to you more in the band if you play tuba.” Holden’s career in music is not ending with graduation. He plans to attend the Red Wing Campus of Minnesota State College Southeast to learn musical instrument repair. “Before I fell in love with making music, I wanted to be a carpenter,” Holden shared. “This combines both aspects of that working with my hands and music. (Some day), I would like to repair instruments for my high school and have (the school) as one of my customers.”

Historical Society To Host Blacksmith The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, June 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The program is free and open to the public. Andrew Reist will give a presentation titled “The History of Blacksmithing.” Topics will be the history of blacksmithing, the tools used to shape metal, types of metal, and how to forge iron into decorative pieces. A live demonstration will follow the talk.

I took piano lessons for a while and joined the chorus in seventh grade at Smith Middle School.” “My dad had always played tuba and he is friends with the band director (at the high school), and they needed some tuba players,” he added, noting that his best friend plays the tuba and encouraged him to learn the instrument too. Holden’s dad provided the tuba lessons. “He basically gave me a lesson book and told me the basics and I practiced every day,” said Holden, adding that the tuba is a difficult instrument to learn to play. “It takes a lot of air. If you have never been a professional breather, it takes time to get that skill mastered. It takes a lot of air movement. It’s 16 feet of tubing that you have to blow through.” Holden became a member of the high school marching band and also continued to sing. He was a member of the chorus all four years of high school and in the select choir, the Chorale. The Solanco High School marching band performed prior to all

The Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, has posted its schedule. The Friends group will hold a weekend book sale on Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale will feature children’s picture books and chapter books, popular fiction titles, nonfiction books, puzzles, and more. The library also offers a free computer and digital training course in partnership with Millersville University. The course is offered from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays at the library. The Knitting and Crocheting Group meets at the library on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. The group is open to interested knitters, crocheters, and other crafters of all ages. The Summer Reading Program began on June 4, and reading challenges are available for adults, as well as for children. To start their challenge, adults may pick up a map and stickers at the library and select seven books to read by Saturday, Aug. 13, that relate to this year’s theme, “Oceans of Possibilities.” Participants should turn in their completed map at the circulation desk by Aug. 13. Singers Sought For Event In New York City

Radio City Music Hall has invited the Darla Bair Singers to perform on Saturday, Nov. 26, to open for the Christmas Spectacular, starring the Rockettes. The Darla Bair Singers is a project choir, which is a group of people coming together to sing one concert. The Lancaster-based group, which will also include non-singers, will travel on a motor coach from Lancaster to New York City and enjoy shopping time, as well as seeing the show at Radio City. There will be time to visit Rockefeller Plaza and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Non-singing travelers are also welcome. Singers who already participate in a barbershop, professional, community or church choir need not audition. Other singers will audition over the phone. Historical Society from pg 1 Reist is a blacksmith, art teacher, anvil producer, and collector who became interested in the historic craft when he was 12 years old. Reist began apprenticing with a well-known blacksmith and lifelong friend. His insight for design came from researching Lancaster
County ironwork in books and at local museums. As a high school sophomore in 2015, he started Oak Lawn Blacksmith Shop. Through apprenticeships and his degree from Tennessee Tech University, he gained knowledge and worked with world-renowned artists.

Dial Gauge Tests Slated Penn State Cooperative Extension Lancaster will offer testing of dial gauge pressure canners. These canners need to be checked for accuracy each year. New canners and new gauges should also be tested. Pressure canners with a weighted gauge do not have to be tested for accuracy because they cannot go out of calibration. Free, in-person testing will be available at two locations. Testing will be performed from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 17, at Good’s Store, 1338 Main St., East Earl, and on Thursday, June 23, at Good’s Store, 2499 Stiegel Pike, Schaefferstown. Clean gauges or lids can also be dropped off at these Good’s Store locations to be tested, and customers
can pick up the gauge or lid on a separate date. Penn State Extension will also test over a two-week period in June by drop-off. The “Sounds of Strasburg” summer concert series will return to the Strasburg Community Park Amphitheater stage on select Saturdays beginning June 25. All performances will start at 6:30 p.m. The amphitheater is located within the nature preserve at 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. “Nothing welcomes summer quite like the sound of music in the park, and we are so excited to see the community bring their blankets and lawn chairs to relax and enjoy our great lineup this year,” said Patti Creighton, concert committee member. “One of my favorite features of our concert series is the wide age range of audience members it draws. Full Circle Recycling is celebrating its 20th anniversary in June. The business has three locations: 965 Lancaster Pike, Quarryville; 702 S. Prince St., Lancaster, with the entrance on Seymour Street; and 1430 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. Brian Grimm has been involved in the recycling business since he was a child. His father, Ray, started G & R Auto Salvage with a partner in the 1970s. Growing up, Brian worked there on weekends and during summers. In the 1980s, he managed his own yard, Agreeable Auto Salvage in Mount Joy. Eventually, Brian sold his salvage yard and the Grimms including Brian’s wife, Dottie, and their sons, Zachary and Isaac - raised broiler chickens and beef cattle on farms in Willow Street and outside of Delta in southern York County. When Ray retired from his business, Brian and Dottie bought Ray’s salvage yard, located at the top of the Buck hill outside of Quarryville. They changed the focus from selling used auto parts to buying scrap metals. A few years later, they bought their second location on South Prince Street in Lancaster, formerly Dixon Recycling. Then, in 2014, they bought the former Rubin Steel Company on Fruitville Pike in Lancaster. Zach and Isaac attended college at Shippensburg and Penn State universities, with Zach earning a degree in business management and Isaac earning a degree in finance. After working elsewhere, they both returned to the family business and plan to take over the operations one day. Zach currently manages the Fruitville Pike branch, while Isaac manages the location at the Buck. Cousin Troy McDonald manages the South Prince Street location. Full Circle Recycling gets its name from the fact that the Grimms went from the original business of selling used parts and recycling automobiles to farming, then back to recycling. To celebrate the business’s 20th anniversary, each of the Full Circle Recycling locations held customer appreciation events in early June with free food, contests, and prizes.
