Solanco Track Hall of Fame Enshrines Eight

The Solanco Cross Country & Track Alumni Association recently inducted eight people into its hall of fame.

Steve King, Jim Shillow, Bert Hampton, Tom Regan, Dave White, Ben Work, Janice GuyllShields, and Vivian Murray-Tiller were enshrined during alumni night on Solanco High School’s track on April 14.

“The tradition here is just so great between coach (Art) Harrington, coach (Dan) McCardell, coach (Lee) Rhodes, and Wags (coach John Waggoner),” said Craig Ausel, who is a member of the Solanco Cross Country & Track Alumni Association board of directors. “What’s cool is to see these alumni who are 60-something years old or older come back and call Har ‘Coach’ or ‘Mr. Harrington.’ There’s just so much good stuff about it. (The alumni love) coming back.”

King, a 1961 Solanco graduate, was the Lancaster County champion in the 100- and 220-yard dashes and the team’s leading

scorer in his senior season. King passed away in 2017, and his daughter, Dakota, and brothers, Mark and Timothy, accepted the honor on his behalf.

“It means a lot to the family,” Dakota said. “He’s the one who instilled the love for the sport in me, and then I did it in middle school and high school and college, and now I’m coaching at the

collegiate level (Northwest Nazarene University). He inspired me, and I am still in the sport that he loved and I fell in love with.”

Mark said, “It’s a great honor. It’s kind of neat for our grandkids because we live in the area. Our grandkids can know that their uncle was honored and is in the hall of fame.”

Timothy, who lives in Jerusalem, was in town to visit Mark. “Mark said, ‘Guess what’s happening?’”

Timothy said. “It’s all ordained that I’m here at the right time to honor my brother.”

Shillow, a 1964 graduate, won a District III championship in the javelin and was a state medalist with a third-place finish in the javelin. His throw of 212 feet, 7 inches is still a Solanco High School record and the longest standing record in school track history.

Hampton, a 1967 graduate, led the league in scoring with 162 points as a senior, competing in the pole vault, javelin, high jump, and triple jump. He was the Lancaster County champion in the pole vault, jumping a thenleague-record 12 feet, 7 inches.

“It is quite an honor,” Hampton said. “It’s a great feeling to be recognized. I was always a Mule, and I am proud to be here.”

Regan, a 1969 graduate, was a distance standout for Solanco from 1966 to 1969. He was the 1969 Lancaster County champion in the 1-mile run. Regan was also a member of the first Solanco Cross-Country Hall of Fame class. White, a 1971

Carla Beam’s got a fever, and the only prescription is more kettlebell.

The personal trainer, who resides in East Drumore Township, recently founded her own business, Strong ON Living, and is introducing a five-week kettlebell program that will begin Monday, June 16, and conclude Wednesday, July 16.

The sessions will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the John Wright Company, 645 Lancaster Pike, New Providence. Go to www .strongonliving.com/kettle bell-project-1 to register or for additional information.

“No one has done a kettlebell-only program in Lancaster

County that I am aware of,” said Carla, who has been a personal trainer for more than 20 years. “I’m really excited about it. Kettlebells are all you really need to improve your strength, stability, coordination, and

The Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (LCHRA) is requesting the public’s assistance to help the organization best serve people experiencing housing insecurity.

As the lead agency of the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition (LCHC), the LCHRA held a virtual meeting with stakeholders on May 21 to kick off the public participation portion of a county-wide initiative, the Lancaster County Housing and Homelessness Strategic Plan.

Lancaster County residents can play their part by completing a survey. “We want to get new data about best practices around homeless response and affordable housing and figure out what the needs are,” said Jocelynn Naples, director of communications, development, and special projects for the LCHRA. “We want broad participation across municipalities, across business sectors. Our ideal would be for all county residents to fill the

balance for beginners up to advanced athletes. I can tailor those workouts to any fitness level. I would have my grandmother do this program. My passion is someone who thinks they can’t do it. I show them what they’re capable of doing. There’s nothing more rewarding than that.”

Carla is living out a dream she once shared with her late sister, Traci Wagner, nearly three decades ago. “It’s always been a dream of mine to start a business,” Carla said. “When teenagers and early adults, my sister and I had a plan to have a gym together.”

she’s gotta have more kettlebell. “It’s my favorite tool to use because you don’t need a ton of equipment or space,” she said. Carla also utilizes bands and dumbbells and other equipment that is easily transported. “That’s what makes exercise so easy,” she said. “Everybody thinks they need a gym. I want to tell people that they don’t need a gym. They have a body. God gave you all you need.”

She specializes in helping people overcome injuries or surgeries to become pain free. “I am not a physical therapist, but there’s a lot that I can do to help people,” Carla said.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good

Traci died in a car accident in 1999, and Carla put the dream on hold. “It’s always been in the back of my mind,” said Carla. “More recently, opportunities have been presenting themselves. I was sitting in church, and the pastor was asking, ‘How are you using your gifts?’ And coaching is a gift of mine. I’ve helped hundreds of people change their lives.”

Carla believed she had to move forward with her plans for herself and her family and for Traci. “I became a personal trainer because she wanted me to do it,” said Carla. “After she passed away, I continued the certification program we had been working on.”

It was not an ideal time to begin a business. Carla’s husband, Jim, had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. “At this point last year, I thought I might lose him,” Carla said. “Sitting in church, I was thinking, ‘Really, God? Right now? This is not the time I had pictured for this.’”

The dream was deferred but not denied. Carla went ahead with her plans to begin Strong ON Living. “I am trusting that God is guiding me where I need to be,” she said. “Why not? Let’s do it now.”

Jim has undergone his last scheduled major surgery and is

The name of Carla’s business is stylized Strong ON Living, which is used as both a greeting and a rallying cry. As Jim was battling cancer, clients would say, “Strong ON, Carla. Strong ON.’” Carla uses the phrase at the end of her emails and as a way to say goodbye to her clients. “You ‘Strong ON’ through everything,” she said. “You ‘Strong ON’ through the good and the bad. You ‘Strong ON’ through life.”

Strong ON Living focuses on personalized training, nutrition coaching, and mindset coaching. “I believe in helping people show up strong every day of their life, whether it’s exercise related or not,” said Carla. “Movement is medicine. I’m a firm believer that how we take care of our bodies can determine our future. Anyone can do this and feel good, thrive instead of survive.”

survey out. We know that’s not possible, but we’re trying to push it as widely as we can.”

County residents can go to https://lchra.com to complete the survey, which will be available until approximately Thursday, Aug. 21. The questionnaire will also be publicized on the Facebook accounts for the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition.

The anonymous survey is composed of 12 questions, including information about the residents’ demographics and household income.

“Our programs are income constrained, so (we need to know if) we are reaching the people that can access our programs and services,” Naples said. “Or do we need to adjust our outreach strategy? We’re really trying to make

it representative across not only geography, but socioeconomic distribution as well.”

Naples added, “It will really help us improve how we can reach out and provide services to the people who are in need of assistance and help us do what we’re doing better across the county.”

Justin Eby, who is the executive director of the LCHRA, stated the survey will likely reinforce some of the issues the group believes need to be addressed, in addition to making the LCHRA aware of other areas the group should be focusing on that are burdens to people’s ability to have a roof over their head.

“The county is different as far as housing issues (are concerned),” said Eby. “We want to make sure that we can capture information on people’s struggles, (such as) how to connect with services and the lack of a certain housing types. It will help inform us so we can have actual objectives and outcomes. We don’t want to have a plan where we can’t reach those goals.”

Eby said the LCHC has been around for nearly two decades and moved to the LCHRA’s Penn Square headquarters in 2021. The team works to help spearhead planning, funding, coordinating, and reporting on services to address homelessness.

The coalition is composed of more than 50 organizations in various forms, including housing programs, street outreach, and shelter provision.

The LCHRA asks that people who need assistance dial the United Way’s 211 number or go to https:// pa211east.org to find a service provider and be directed to resources based on location.

The LCHRA oversees housing choice voucher programs for county residents outside of Lancaster city, including a federal rental subsidy program. Eby said a total of 810 individuals or families are getting this help from the program, which includes assistance for youths and veterans.

Eby explained that vouchers are a rental assistance program. “We make

LCHRA is working through a waiting list and is currently not

accepting applications. Eby estimated that the group will be able to resume taking applications in 18 to 24 months.

LCHRA operates a home repair program through the Department of Housing and Human Development. The program is for income-qualified homeowners who need to make safety and security repairs to their residences, and it provides up to $25,000 to pay for work, including new roofs, electrical upgrades, and fixes for water and sewer issues.
