New Signs Will Welcome Everyone To Quarryville eople driving into Quarryville will soon see a new look, as two “Welcome to Quarryville” signs are planned for the near future. The new signs, made of a composite material, will measure 4 by 6 feet and will feature gold lettering on a deep blue background. There will be two signs, one on Route 222 southbound entering the borough and the other on westbound Route 372 entering the borough. The signs will replace existing signs that were put in place a number of years ago by the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. Unlike the present signs, the new ones will not list any local businesses. The signs will read, “Welcome to Quarryville. ‘The Heart of Southern Lancaster County.’ Founded in 1791.” “This is a whole different approach,” Quarryville borough manager Scott Peiffer said.

Preliminary versions of the signs were presented at the May meeting of Quarryville Borough Council, where four different color combinations were showcased. “The renditions have been really impressive. I just think it will be a whole different take on it,” Peiffer said. “I like them a lot.” The originator of the project is Shawn Reimold. As a store manager at Martin Appliance, Martin Water and Martin Furniture & Mattress, located just outside the borough, Reimold is familiar with the community and is proud of Quarryville. “Quarryville has a great personality; the whole Southern End does. It’s about welcoming people and helping each other as neighbors,” Reimold said. Reimold has seen similar signs in other towns and presented the idea to Peiffer and Quarryville Mayor Anthony Cavallaro. “They both liked the idea of it and borough council was all for it,” he said. “I’m just trying to spearhead it and pull everything together.” See New Signs pg 2

In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.” See Relay For Life pg 7

Disc Golf Club Plans Tournament

When Wesley Moyer moved to Lancaster County several years ago, he had a special reason to look for a place to live in Akron. Moyer specifically chose the borough because he likes Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Moyer’s connection to the park is not simply due to an affinity for the outdoors, but rather is tied to his interest in disc golf, a sport he first discovered at summer camp in Pottstown as a teenager.
“I got more serious (about disc golf) when I came here,” said Moyer, who is now the secretary of the 75-member Lancaster County Disc Golf Club (LCDGC). He also volunteers to help maintain the disc golf course at Akron - a 27-basket course with holes in the open, in the pine forest, and mixed between fairways and woods. Maintenance ranges from working to replace wornout rubber and concrete tee pads at a cost of up to $20,000 to wading waist-deep into the murky pond once a year in search of lost discs. The Southern End Community Association (SECA), 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, has posted its schedule. The pool will be open on weekends only through Saturday, June 11, at which point regular hours will begin. Regular hours will be noon to 7 p.m. daily. Solanco’s lone participant in the PIAA Track and Field Championships held at Shippensburg University Memorial Day weekend brought home a medal. Katie Urbine cleared 13 feet in the pole vault for the third time this season and earned a silver medal for her efforts. Mount Saint Joseph’s Veronica Vacca also vaulted 13 feet and captured the Class 3A title by virtue of misses. Vacca, a freshman, cleared 13 feet on her first attempt. Urbine missed her first two tries but eventually tied her career best. “It was a very long event (5 hours, 15 minutes),” said head coach Jen McDowell, “which was mentally tough, but Katie kept focused throughout. Her goal was 13 feet, and she was determined to hit it.” The competition actually started outside but when a storm moved through, everything moved inside. “Everyone needed to warm up again and coaches then asked about girls who had to go in the rain and whether their jumps should count, so that took another 30 minutes,” explained McDowell. “Katie practices inside so that doesn’t really affect her jumping. She had a great series of jumps, each height made on her first attempt until 13 feet.”
“Anna did the lion’s share of the work,” said Miller, “and she has the ability to get even better.” K. Janssen batted .412 and collected 21 RBIs, two homers, three triples and scored 25 runs. “She went from the bottom of the batting order to the second spot and over the last couple of weeks came through with a number of key hits that helped us qualify for the post-season,” Miller noted. “We played well in a challenging section, beating everyone in our section at least once. The crossovers were a bit more challenging as we found ways to not win,” he continued. “We gave up 27 unearned runs this year. That is significant and has to get better. We had moments of playing well against good squads and sometimes we were too generous.” Solanco’s unsung heroes included seniors Haupt, Alyssa Schlagnhaufer and Taryn Britigan along with sophomore Josie Janssen. “Marlee was a consistent first baseman who quietly batted .400,” Miller noted. “She had some timely hits at the No 5 spot. And Josie is incredibly quick on the bunt but can also hit with power. She is very athletic and was an asset in the outfield. “Alyssa was another player asked to play multiple positions (LF, RF, 2b) and stepped in wherever we needed her. Taryn, unfortunately, injured her hand during the Warwick game and missed four weeks. She developed into a solid second baseman and we appreciate what she has done for the program. All the seniors contributed, not just this year, but to the program as a whole.” Rounding out the squad was Sara Defrancesco, who will be vying for the catcher duties next season, and Brooke Jennings, who scored 18 runs as a courtesy runner. BASEBALL Despite finishing the season with a 4-16 record, head coach John Girvin points out numerous positives along the way, including six games lost by two runs and three more by three runs. “We finished with 126 hits as a
team but only 13 were for extra bases,” said Girvin. “We were missing the big hit to drive in runs.” Nate Harnish led the team again this year, batting .344 and collecting 21 hits. He was also the force behind home plate and was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-star. “Nate’s leadership was invaluable,” said Girvin. “He is so important back there that we didn’t pitch him as much this year. At one point he threw runners out in eight consecutive games.” Contributing to the team’s .238 batting average was Ty Burger (.311, 19 hits) and Dillon Dean (.259) and Austin Wenger (.246) who both tied for RBIs with eight each. “And I’d like to mention Blake Cheyney,” said Girvin. “I think he had five varsity at bats last year and this year hit .250 with 13 hits and five RBIs. He worked so hard and put the ball in play in crucial situations. His success is a testament to his hard work. Both Blake and Avery Jacobsen, our lone seniors, put the work in. Urbine is a two-time LancasterLebanon League pole vault champ and this year’s district champ. She finished sixth in the state last year. The sophomore cleared 13 feet this past winter to win the indoor championships. SOFTBALL The softball team wrapped up the 2022 season with an overall record of 14-7 and appearances in the L-L League playoffs and districts. For their efforts as a team, they were well represented in the recent L-L League all-star selections. Becca Foulk, Holly Grube, Emily Sims, and Anna Sexton were First Team All-Section Two all-stars while Kendal Janssen was an Honorable Mention. Grube (3b) and Sims (ss) were also voted to the All-Section One and Two all-star team by position. “They are all deserving of the recognition they received,” said head coach Brett Miller. “Emily, Kendal, Holly and Becca are the top of the lineup but without the bottom of our lineup getting on base, we would not have been as productive.” Foulk, a senior, is a three-time all-star and a first-time catcher for Solanco. “She was the leader of the team,” Miller said. Foulk finished with a .446 batting average that included 25 RBIs, a team-high eight doubles and two home runs. Grube led the team with 28 RBIs, 11 walks, three home runs, a .507 batting average and tied Marlee Haupt with 25 hits. “Holly has impressive offensive stats and was asked to play, third, short, second and pitch,” noted Miller. “And sometimes that changed at game time.” Batting leadoff, Sims led the team with 28 runs scored and three triples. She also had two home runs and a .435 batting average. “As a lead-off, she does what we needed her to do,” said Miller. “She has great instincts running the bases.” Sexton struck out 123 batters, walked 28 and finished with an ERA of 3.37. She finished with a 12-6 record and a .310 batting average.

Early on we struggled with errors that forced us to make some adjustments that paid off through the second half of the season. “We played tough competition this year like Ephrata and L-S who both advanced in the post season,” he continued. “And played great against Muhlenberg and Exeter and knocked off Donegal, another post-season team. And in nine of those games, we were right there. If you look at the big picture, it was a good season.”

The goal is to put the disc in the basket in the fewest possible throws. “(Akron) is a par three course, so it’s 54 par, and professionals will shoot 45 or 46, while an average (player) shoots about 56,” explained Moyer, who noted for groups of three players, the course takes about three hours and 30 minutes to complete. He noted that while league members meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, many families and members of the Plain community enjoy the course on Sundays. Just as with clubs for traditional golf, discs are divided by designation. Fairways, drivers, mids, and putters are chosen by the player based on the distance of the throw and other factors. Relay For Life Lancaster will return at noon on June 10, with activities scheduled through noon on June 11.
For 2022, Relay is back, and to celebrate, organizers are inviting area residents to come enjoy the carnivalstyle event they have planned. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. As in the past, teams will gather at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, forming a 50-team tent city, as each team keeps at least one member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor (to take part),” she said. “Anyone can come. Bring the kids out.” Indeed, Delp reported that children’s activities will be held during both days.

Farmers Market Vouchers Available In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2022 Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible persons in June at local senior centers. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least age 60, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $25,142 for one person or less than $33,874 for two people. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. Persons unable to pick up the vouchers may have a representative pick up vouchers on their behalf, but a completed, signed application form will need to be presented at the time of distribution. A 2022 application is posted at www.lancoaging.org. To receive an application by mail or email, contact any Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979 or any senior center listed below.
