Solanco Class of 2025 Members Are Ready To Chase Their Goals
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
No matter what they choose to do after commencement, Solanco High School principal Scott Long is confident members of the Class of 2025 will give it their all.
“There are a lot of qualities that stand out,” Long said. “They are kind kids. They’re fun to be around. They’re energetic. Without a doubt, the biggest thing that stood out to me is their ability that when they have a goal, they relentlessly pursue that goal. There are so many things this group has accomplished, from things like athletics to academics, to things at CTC (Career and Technology Center), to going right to the workforce. I think about the fact that they all pursued their goals.”
Solanco’s graduation for approximately 239 seniors is scheduled for Friday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in the football stadium, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Long will closely monitor the weather forecast. “We make holding an outdoor event our top priority,” said Long. “In previous years, we have moved the event back one day, up one day, and delayed by just an hour or so. I have not locked into a rain date concept, simply because we will move it either way to avoid having to be indoors.” The ceremony will be livestreamed on the school district’s YouTube page.
Brock Snider, a 2010 Solanco graduate, will be the guest speaker. A multi-sport athlete and class president, Snider studied marketing at Bloomsburg

University and co-founded Oola Bowls.
Dominic Arbogast, a class representative who will major
in health science and compete for the Ursinus College track and field team, said he enjoyed attending football games and was

nated out of a concept from event organizer Betsy Musser in 2021. “I just thought it would be a great idea to do,” she said. Marty Henry and Anna Mary Barcus, who were committee members at the time, used their connections to help start the event.
Ruthie Smith and Peggy Osborne are helping Betsy with this year’s tour. “It is truly an endeavor of the congregation,” Betsy said.
Betsy noted that she hopes visitors will pick up suggestions for their own gardens. “As long as people get one idea, it’s a

success, something new or they didn’t think of before,” she said.

will be able to see the restored sanctuary, featuring “the newly exposed balcony, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, antique German-stained glass windows, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, and the wooden pews from 1914.”
For the first time, visitors will be able to purchase lunch while at the church by stopping by the Family Life Center, which is across the street from the sanctuary.
The menu will include spinach salad, turkey sandwiches, and chicken salad sandwiches. Dessert choices will include angel food cake with strawberries, strawberries and ice cream, and cupcakes. There will also be a stand selling lemonade and iced tea, as well as
snacks. Items from Henrys’ Farm and Greenhouses will also be available for purchase. Reservations are not required to purchase lunch, but those interested are asked to preregister by calling 717-548-2763.
The other stops on the Posies and Porches tour will include Ron and Bev Walton’s home, the former East Centre School House, located at the corner of Shady Lane and Sandhill Road, Conestoga, and the Conestoga Heritage Farm, 118 Sandhill Road, Conestoga, which is across the street from the school. This is the 175th anniversary of East Centre School, which contains artwork from the early 1900s, flower gardens, and more than 500 hybrid and heirloom vegetables.
The grounds of this 1870s farmhouse include tomatoes, herbs, carrots, onions, red beets, strawberries, rhubarb, boxwoods, and azaleas.

Another stop will be Tony and Tawn Battiste’s home in, Quarryville. Along with creek stones and shrubs, Tawn added flora and hanging baskets. There is a “door porch” that includes four doors from the former Quarryville movie theater of long ago. Tawn has put up numerous birdhouses, and Tony grows vegetables in raised beds.
Carol Gibson’s home in Quarryville will also be featured. Gibson has a “Friendship Garden,” which is overflowing with many plants shared from loved ones over the years and the memories they hold. There is a memorial garden off the west side of the sunroom in honor of her parents, Glenn and Evelyn Myer.
Jack and Dana Davis’ home in Nottingham will be another stop. The Davis family members said they love “using trees, shrubs, and groundcovers to help create a cozy and interesting space during all four seasons.” Dana enjoys planting flower seeds, and Jack tends to the trees and grass.

Bill and Betsy Musser’s home, a 4-acre property in Willow Street, has evolved from a cornfield over the past 48 years. Tadpoles, frogs, and fish reside in the water garden, and there are frequently wrens in the birdhouses and hummingbirds at the feeder.
Another stop will be Don and Carol Trimble’s home in Quarryville. The Trimbles had roses on a farm and then continued raising the flowers after moving to their current home 20 years ago. The types of roses include hybrid trees, foribundas,

Music will be provided by six artists, headlined by three-time GMA (Gospel Music Association) Dove Award-winner Cory Asbury. Dove Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the Christian music industry.
Behold the Beloved, a rock band from Manheim, will get the party started at noon. “We’re going to start the day out with Christian rock to bring the place alive,” Dan said. “We are going to go through a variety of contemporary Christian music, ranging from pop to soulful to straight-out worship.”
Caleb + Kelsey will play light pop sounds. Contemporary pop artist
Tasha Layton will be next on the stage, followed by Cochren & Co. and Benjamin William Hastings. Asbury will close the show.
“There will be a style of music that appeals to all ages,” said Jan.
Two pastors will speak at the event: Josh Payne and Richie Nazario. Dan has heard Payne at Freedom Life Church in Atglen. “He’s always a very engaging speaker,” said Dan. Nazario is from La Cosecha Church in Quarryville.
It will be a nondenominational event, suited for all. “Anyone and everyone will find it entertaining regardless of their background,” Dan said.
Jan added, “It’s a family event, for grandparents right down to kids. And it’s relaxing. You throw your blanket out and spend the day. There’s just something for everybody. People will get to see six great artists and can bring the whole family.”

Dan noted that Harold Probst had the vision for Witness in 2002, and Craig Deibler of Wesley Church took the idea and ran with it. The last festival was held in 2014.
Deibler passed away in 2023.
“The Lord has laid it on my heart,” said Dan. “Together with Jan, and after some

discussion and prayer and talking to Craig’s widow, Lisa, we decided we were going to give it a go.”
Dan and Jan attended some of the previous Witness festivals. They have recently seen social media comments from others sharing stories of how they attended the concerts as a child, went to Witness on a first date, or accepted Christ at the festival, said Jan. Those stories motivated her to want to be part of the event’s revival.
“A lot of it has to do with the testimonies we hear,” Jan said. “That’s our main goal. It’s to get people there so they can hear words spoken and songs sung, that they can take something from that and know who God is, or could be, in their life.”
Craig’s son Derik Deibler was instrumental in putting this year’s impressive lineup of acts together. The Keesemans said sponsorships from local businesses and churches make the festival possible. Organizing the event is not easy, but Dan and
Jan are enjoying the experience.
“I’ve always had a very strong passion for people,” said Dan. “And this has always been an impactful event. Lives are changed in incredible ways. We pray every day about people who don’t even know about Witness, that they’re going to show up that day somehow and have their lives change.”

Class representative Piper Haupt plans to take a gap year to work before deciding if she wants to attend college. Piper said she enjoyed the Senior Splashin’ competition where teams of two try to squirt opposing teams with a water gun while avoiding the same fate from other tandems. “It was kind of a fun game,” said Piper. “I’m sure everyone is glad it’s over, but it’s a fun memory to look back on.”
Garrett Grove, a representative who is planning to attend West Virginia University with a double major in accounting and finance, touted the seniors’ success in class competitions. The Class of 2025 swept Color Wars and powder puff games as juniors and seniors.
Class treasurer Abbie Gorgo will move to Germany after graduation and spend between six months to a year as part of a cultural studies exchange. “I made a lot of tight relationships (in high school) along the way,” Abbie said. “I didn’t really know that many people when I first came to high school, and I became friends with a lot of people that I guarantee will last for a long, long time.”
Logan DellaVecchia, the class president, said the seniors learned from some rookie mistakes, including an unattractive Color Wars mural and a poorly planned dance.
“It was just a really bad dance that we put together in a short amount of time,” said Logan, who will major in marketing at Bloomsburg University.
Class representative Emileigh Kreider, who will study elementary education at the University of Wyoming, gave a shoutout to class advisers Alyssa Landis and Sabrina Witmer. “I couldn’t have asked for better advisers,” Emileigh said. “We came into this together as they were new to the school when we were freshmen, and we became a little family.”
Class secretary Sara DeFrancesco, who will study elementary education and play softball at York College, noted how the seniors continue to find ways to bond. On the evening of May 20, approximately 50 members of the class camped in tents in the school parking lot. “We were up until 3 a.m. talking and vibing,” Sara said. “We really mesh well as a group.”
Austin Jarabak, a class representative who will study supply chain management at Bloomsburg University, summed up his high school experience.
“I used to say it a lot as a joke, but it’s become more serious,” he said. “It’s not about what we’ve done or what has happened; it’s about the friends we’ve made along the way.”
