Memorial ride will return to the Southern End for final time

According to the National Institute of Mental Health’s website, suicide was the 11th-leading cause of death in the United States in 2021. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported nearly 50,000 victims, and it determined suicide to be the second-leading cause of death among Americans from ages 10 to 14 and 25 to 34. Like many discussions related to mental health, the discourse surrounding suicide is often complicated by stigmas. Many nonprofit organizations and individuals, including Bill and Julia Trout of New Providence, seek to raise awareness of suicide and its causes by spreading a message of hope.

In June 2021, Bill and Julia held a motorcycle ride in memory of their late son, Daulton, an avid motorcyclist who lost his life to suicide earlier that year. The first ride was held during the weekend of what would have been Daulton’s 23rd birthday, and the event grew to become an annual tradition in the Southern End.

The fourth annual Daulton Trout Memorial Ride for Suicide Awareness and Prevention will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The ride will begin at the Hoffman Building in Memorial Park, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, and registration will be available from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Attendees who do not wish to ride are invited to a silent auction and lunch in the Hoffman Building after the ride concludes at 12:30 p.m.

Initially, the participants in

the ride followed a course that followed Route 272 from Buck to Willow Street before concluding at the Solanco Fairgrounds. While the ride was scenic, Bill and Julia wanted to make it more visible to the community; in 2023, they expanded the route to incorporate other parts of the Southern End, including Lampeter, Strasburg, Georgetown, downtown Quarryville and New Providence.

For the first two years, Bill and Julia used the proceeds of the memorial ride to endow the Daulton Trout Scholarship fund at Solanco High School. After sustaining the scholarship, the Trout family decided to use the money raised by the ride to support local organizations such as Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga and Mental Health America of

Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, recently held its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. The exhibit opened on May 3, and it featured more than 170 pieces of artwork by pet owners and artists from every school district in the county to celebrate the unique bond between humans and their animal companions. The show will remain at the gallery until the end of May.

The opening reception was attended by veterinarians and vendors of pet accessories and other animal-related products, as well as representatives of the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Every year, Mulberry Art Studios uses its We Love Our Pets show to support the Sebastian Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from art sales to the organization. The Sebastian Foundation helps to locate homes for animals throughout Lancaster County, and its representatives were accompanied by several adoptable dogs on opening night. The event raised more than $800 for the foundation. We Love Our Pets’ opening night was sponsored by Metro Pet Vet, an animal hospital based in Lancaster city.

Every year, art teachers in school districts such as Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Penn Manor, Solanco and many others partner with Mulberry Art Studios to incorporate the We Love Our Pets show in their curriculum. Students are able to submit artwork made in class

Lancaster County. This year, the proceeds will also benefit Commonwealth Emergency Crisis Response.

Bill and Julia said this is the last year they plan to have the ride due to the effort required to organize it and the painful memories it brings up. Since 2021, the couple has raised more than $45,000 for local nonprofits through the annual ride.

“If you cross paths with us or see us riding, please take a moment to think of the families who have suffered the tragedy of suicide,” Julia said. “It might take five minutes to wait for us to pass, but you can use that time to be grateful for your family.”

Solanco students honored in art contests

Solanco artists have been recognized in this year’s Scholastic Art Awards and Lancaster County Young Artists Awards (LCYA Awards), winning 64 awards.

Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, is a recognition program for teens in grades seven to 12. Visual arts professionals serve as judges, selecting works based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. The mission of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their visionary work to the world through recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships.

The Lancaster Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design hosted the annual regional exhibition. Award-winning artworks in the LCYA competition were exhibited from March 8 to April 7 at the Lancaster Museum of Art, and award-winning artworks in the Scholastic competition may be viewed through Friday, May 31, at www.demuth.org/ scholastic-art-awards-2024.

At Solanco, senior Ava Kurtz won a record-breaking 37 awards, which represents the most awards won by a Solanco High School artist in the regional Scholastic and LCYA competitions. Kurtz additionally holds the record for the most regional Scholastic Art Awards won by a Solanco High School artist that have advanced to national adjudication; nine of Kurtz’s submissions See Contest pg 5

Three artists received awards for pieces entered in the show: the youth People’s Choice award was given to Jinx Canfield of Ephrata for the painting “Eloise,” Violet van der Meij of Lancaster earned Best in Show in the youth category for her piece “Space Aussie,” and Jen van der Meij of

Lancaster received the Best in Show and People’s Choice awards for her paintings “Colonel Sanders” and “Jessie,” respectively.

“I enjoy sculpture and drawing but I didn’t have the patience to work with acrylic on canvas when I was younger, so I’m not as experienced with it yet,” said 16-year-old Canfield. who used acrylic paint to make “Eloise.” “Eloise, the pup, developed some recent health issues limiting her time here with us, so this is going to end up as a sort of memorial and remembrance piece.”

Violet, who is Jen’s 11-year-old daughter, said she decided to paint an Australian Shepherd as it is her favorite breed. “I enjoy all mediums of art, but I went with watercolor and ink because it was a progression from some of the pieces I submitted last year,” Violet added. “I allowed myself to use more imagination this year by putting my Aussie into a space environment.”

“I enjoyed watching Violet be more comfortable with exploring this year, and I love how her pieces turned out,” Jen said. “She’s a talented young lady, and I loved sharing this experience with her.”

Organizations to premiere play

The Hazel I. Jackson Foundation and the Millersville University Office of Diversity and Inclusion will hold their inaugural fundraiser, the premiere of the play “Midst of Faith” by Nathan Lee Gadsden. Performances will take place on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.

“Midst of Faith” is based on the journey of Hazel Jackson, an educator who navigated her way from the one-room segregated schoolhouses of the South to her groundbreaking hiring as a teacher in a Northern school district and eventually as a pro -

Jen’s paintings incorporated gold leaf, a technique that she had never experimented with before.

“Jessie” depicts Jen’s childhood pet donkey, and “Colonel Sanders” portrays a cat owned by Jen’s close friends. “For ‘Jessie,’ I wanted my love of donkeys to be represented with an over-the-top background, flooding the entire piece with gold leaf before paint-

The story concludes with a scene where students celebrate the dedication of a school in Lancaster in Jackson’s name, showcasing the lasting impact she made on the community.

The May 31 performance will be free for youths in kindergarten through grade 12; children and youths must be accompanied by an adult. The June 1 performance is open to the general public

for a fee. Tickets may be purchased at https:// bit.ly/midstoffaithplay. For more information, contact Cheryl Holland-Jones at 717-8231944 or chollandjones @gmail.com.
