National competition reinforces flutist’s love of music
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Joelle Russell’s trip to South Carolina was both affirming and potentially life-altering.
The Quarryville native finished third in the flute at the 47th annual American Association of Christian Schools (AACS) national competition held April 9 at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.
Joelle performed “Meditation From Thais” by Jules Massenet. “I felt like I couldn’t have performed better under nervous circumstances,” she said. “I feel like the Lord helped me with that.”
Joelle initially wasn’t certain what those in attendance thought. “You always know what your best performance is, so I was kind of feeling like I didn’t make any note mistakes but thought maybe I didn’t put enough emotion into it,” Joelle said. “But at a master class a day later, a lady came up and told me I played flawlessly. That was sweet. That gave me some reassurance.”
The judges concurred with the lady’s assessment. “I was really excited and surprised,” said Joelle. “I didn’t know what to feel. I couldn’t believe it, really. I wasn’t expecting to win anything there, but that was the Lord’s plan.”
Joelle and her twin sister, Joy, who both turned 18 on April 21, started homeschooling a year earlier than usual and each earned a high school diploma last spring.
Joelle and Joy, who also plays the flute, took elective courses at Harford Christian School this year, which enabled them to try

out for the school band. Joelle earned the honor of being the first chair for flute.
Despite late notice, Joelle was able to enter and win first place in the Maryland Association of Christian Schools (MACS) competition March 14 at Harford Christian. That victory over flutists from Maryland and Pennsylvania
Christian schools earned Joelle a spot in the national event. She was not planning on attending college before visiting Bob Jones University this spring. Joelle had been there twice before when her older sister, Anne, finished second in the high school flute competition in consecutive years.

Union’s annual Strawberry Social will be held Saturday, May 31, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood.
There is no fee to attend or for the food. A freewill offering will be accepted, with any proceeds going to two local organizations the church supports - New Hope

Union volunteers will arrive at the kitchen at 9 a.m. to begin preparing beef barbecue sandwiches; hot dogs; and sides such as potato salad, macaroni salad, and baked beans. Potato chips and pretzels will also be available.
The star of the show will be strawberries purchased from a local Amish farm, and ice cream will also be supplied.

games like cornhole will be held. The strawberry social will be held rain or shine.
Union pastor Jeremy Peterson stated the event is designed to bring the community together. “It’s about enjoying spring and enjoying local produce,” he said. “That’s really the main purpose of it. To have good fellowship with one another and open the doors of the church and invite people in.”
Volunteer Judy Greenleaf added, “I think the strawberries really bring them in.”
Peterson noted it is a church’s responsibility to provide activities for everyone to enjoy. “That’s why we’re here,” he said. “We’re here to serve the community that God has put around us and to open our doors so (members of the community) know this is a place that’s for them, too. We want to use opportunities like this to welcome folks in and to let them know we’re here for them and here to serve them.”
Peterson is in his third year as pastor at Union, and he is looking forward to connecting with people from the community. “I don’t have the benefit of growing up here,” he said.
“It’s a good opportunity to get to meet people and to learn a little bit about them. It’s good to sit down and share meals together.”
Event organizer Colleen Sheaffer emphasized, “The whole thing is (about) community. You hope to bring in other people besides the usual people that always come to church. Hopefully, they will find a place that they would like to go, besides just for the Strawberry Social.”
She said people anxiously await the event. “I think they’d be very disappointed if we didn’t have it,” Sheaffer said.
Church members are also excited to host the Strawberry Social. “I really like that there’s people who come every year,” Greenleaf said. “If you see them during the year, they want to know the date (of the Strawberry Social). They make sure they can come. And there are new people, too. I think it’s just a good community outreach (event).”
Anyone with questions about the Strawberry Social can contact Union Presbyterian Church at 717-5292000 or upc@epix.net.
The church is already looking ahead to its big fundraiser, a yard sale that will be held Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12.

Joelle attended music classes on this trip, and Bob Jones University instructors expressed interest in having her take courses at their institution.
“It was different going back being older now and thinking, ‘Well, do I want to go to college?’” Joelle said. “And (Bob Jones University) is the college I always thought in my mind that I would go to if I decided to go to college. Going back for the competition reaffirmed that thought.”
Although she noted there are a lot of details that must be figured out, Joelle is seriously consid -

ering attending the school starting in the fall and becoming a music teacher.
“Music consumes most of
my free time,” she said. “It is something I could do as a career, sharing that love for music and helping

others build skills and enjoy music.”
Music runs in the Russell family. The girls’ father, Mike, who played the euphonium, performed with the all-region and all-state band as a student at Solanco High School. Their mother, Dorine, played the piano as a child. Older brothers Abel and Daniel play multiple instruments, and Mike’s mother, Joyce Russell, plays the piano at Faith Reformed Church.
When Joelle was 5, she could play music on the piano by ear. Joelle, Joy, and Anne took lessons for three years starting when the twins were 8. Joelle and Joy perform with the

Omar Crawford, a Swift Middle School student who spread mulch at the Memorial Park flower beds. “Whenever people drive past, they will say, ‘Wow. This is actually nice. These kids did good work. Everyone did nice work. Our community is great.’ And I think it’s good because whenever we help someone, we build respect, and we give everyone respect for letting us do this.”
Swift Middle School social studies teacher Ben Miller spearheaded the first “6th Grade Community Day” on March 26.
In addition to Memorial Park, students volunteered at sites including the Southern End Community Association (SECA); Solanco Neighborhood Ministries; the Quarryville Library; and the district’s elementary schools: Clermont, Providence, Quarryville, and Bart-Colerain.

“While they’re doing this, they’re learning some skills with the activities they’re doing at various locations,” said Miller. “Everything is hands-on. Everything is teamwork oriented. The
biggest thing is volunteering and helping people within their community. A lot of these kids go to all of these parks. They play sports. The fair is here. They’ve all gone to one of those elementary schools. It’s a chance to give back and help be connected. That’s the whole point of volunteering. It helps you be more connected and helps you be more successful in your school career.”
Community Day also provides students with the opportunity to spend time with pupils from the other middle school. “That’s kind of the point, as well,” said Miller. “I really wanted to make sure that we got both schools together because in three short years they’ll be together at the high school. It’s an opportunity to build relationships and help smooth the transition to high school.”
Smith Middle School student Jacob Barnett enjoyed the chance to get to know some of his future high school classmates. “If you need help, you know who you can get help from and be able to help them,” he said.
Smith student Asher Bridges said, “It’s really

great to help out our community and make things nicer. It’s nice to appreciate your community, be
to others, and show kindness.”

woodwind ensemble at Reformation Bible Church in Darlington, Md., and they restarted lessons last fall. “We’ve been enjoying that and feeling like we can progress again,” Joelle said.
Joy is a talented flutist in her own right and also plays the piano and violin, but they agree Joelle is the more musically minded of the two. Joy is an aspiring photographer and is contemplating joining Joelle at Bob Jones University and honing her picture-taking skills.
Dorine recalled the terms
“stepping up, stepping down, then a skip” from her days of learning how to play the piano. “That’s how I would describe Joelle’s music career,” said Dorine. Now Joelle is ready to focus her full attention on music.
“Last year, I would have said I don’t know what I want to do,” Joelle said. “Having the different opportunities to play in the band and opportunities to compete, I feel like the Lord has been leading me into the direction of music, confirming my desire to continue with music.”
Community Day
holding a Community Day a couple years ago. “The high school does a day of service, and I thought it would be really cool to do that with the sixth-graders,” he said.
A graduate course on cooperative discipline motivated Miller to get the ball rolling. “The class talked about the benefits of volunteering and how it could help students with attendance and grades,” he said.
from pg 4
Miller spoke to his colleagues and Paul Gladfelter, the principal of both Solanco middle schools.
“Everyone was on board, and we’ve been working on it since November,” he said. The early returns are positive, and Miller is already mulling a second Community Day next spring.
“That’s the hope,” he said. “We will see how everything goes. I think everyone feels like it’s going well.”

Author releases book, sets signing
Traci Frantz of Quarryville recently published a book, “With Courage And Grace,” which recounts the 10-year breast cancer journey of her daughter, Tiffany. The memoir begins with Tiffany’s diagnosis at the age of 21 through 10 years of numerous treatments, imaging and surgeries.
Frantz noted that the book contains many humorous moments as humor is how Tiffany accepted and lived with her diagnosis. Frantz’s book tells the story of how Tiffany inspired hundreds of women throughout the world with her story and inspired those who knew her as friends, as well as strangers.

Frantz explained that the book will benefit everyone, but speaks mostly to those in their 20s, 30s and 40s.  Frantz will do her first book signing at Ancient Order of Croaking Frogs, 300 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, June 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. with another signing in late July at The Daily Grind in Quarryville. The June 7 event will also have a basket giveaway in which all the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit a local breast cancer nonprofit. Donated baskets are welcome.
Although the Ancient Order of Croaking Frogs is a private club, those that have bought a book online and would like it signed may bring it to the club on June 7. For more information, visit www.caringbridge .com/visit/tiffanyfrantz.

WITF to host free educational events
Pennon Education and WITF will host two free, family-friendly “Ready, Set, Explore Slide Into Summer” events. On Saturday, May 31, the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the WITF Public Media Center, 4801 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. The event on Saturday, June 7, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lancaster Public Library, 151 N. Queen St., Lancaster.
The first 50 families to check in at each event will receive a free STEM in a Box education kit packed
with materials to encourage summer learning. Each child who attends one of the events will receive a free copy of “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, available as a picture book or young reader’s edition. The events will also offer activities for families, including creating a pinwheel to investigate how wind creates energy, coding hungry Ozobot “ants” to eat a picnic, building a bee hotel to support local pollinators, designing a rollercoaster to
explore force and motion, planting a seed to watch it grow all summer long, and taking a picture with Molly from PBS KIDS’ “Molly of Denali.” Every activity is inspired by and connected to a book, allowing families to make connections between the stories and their own creations.
People who attend the Harrisburg event will have the opportunity to experience the new Digital Creator Studio at the WITF Public Media Center. Families will discover the science behind green screens by choosing a
summer photo background and transporting themselves to sunny beaches, vibrant parks or tropical paradises.
The Digital Creator Studio will also host several youth summer camps and Youth Voice initiatives this summer where local students will learn how to critically analyze and create their own digital content.
Activities at both events are designed for children ages 3 to 14, but people of all ages are welcome. For more information or to register, visit www.witf .org/ready.

Texting service available to turnpike travelers
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers real-time communication during unexpected traffic backlogs. The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.
In June, Paul Miller’s Law will go into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.
The concept for the text messaging service originated from the PA Turnpike’s annual employee innovation challenge, styled after the “Shark Tank” reality competition. The idea was for all customers to be able to text for incident updates when stuck in a backlog. This service complements existing customer assistance offerings such as *11 and 511. Drivers can also call 911 at any time for life-threatening emergencies; criminal activity; and immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.
