Solanco High School slates STEM camp

Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, will hold a STEM summer camp on Monday, July 15, through Thursday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. On each day of the camp, students

“We felt (the STEM camp) was an avenue to give students exposure at a younger age so they can start the conversation with their parents and teachers about skills they’re interested in.”

entering fourth through eighth grades will participate in hands-on activities to learn about various STEM-related topics in the high school’s technology education classrooms.

Students who register for the summer camp will have the opportunity to choose one of three STEM-related fields to explore: videography, robotics and game development or manufacturing and design. Each pathway will include interactive projects and educational activities

specific to the chosen field, and students will spend the week learning about their preferred subject.

Participants who select videography will learn how to operate advanced video cameras and technology used for freelance recording and studio production. The videography program will also include lessons on modern-day video editing and

industry-standard techniques.

The robotics and game development portion of the camp will detail basic computer science topics that will include block coding, and students will be tasked with solving real-life problems by writing their own code. Campers will code in software languages such as C++ and Python and will use other robotics programming resources

during the week.

Students who choose the manufacturing and design option will learn about computer-aided manufacturing by designing a customized product that will be crafted with a computer numeric controlled (CNC) machine. Campers will utilize manufacturing software to write code for the machine, which will construct their products based

As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.

Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outlineon the back of the equipment.

If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and

Music Education Award is to recognize and celebrate schools for their commitment to music education as part of a well-rounded curriculum. In addition to Solanco School District’s committed educators, Weyman said he attributes the music department’s success to administrators and community members who recognize the importance of music at every grade level. “Every qualified research study that you can find attests to the simple fact that actively participating in choral and instrumental music provides a number of tangible benefits,” Weyman added.

In April, Weyman accompanied several Solanco students to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Festival in Erie. The festival gave the students an opportunity to perform and hear ensembles from schools across the state, and

attending music teachers participated in various workshops and seminars.

The educators’ activities covered topics such as new instrument and equipment innovations, various methods of teaching and career planning. This year’s trip to the festival was particularly special for Weyman; the group of students included his son Sawyer, who is a senior at Solanco High School. Sawyer was selected as a member of the All-State Chorus, which performed at the Warner Theater in downtown Erie.

Solanco School District was recognized by the NAMM Foundation for its music programs, including marching band.

Previously, Solanco High School hosted a summer camp that focused solely on robotics. The program became increasingly popular among students and attendance grew every year, prompting the camp organizers to expand the topics covered in 2024.

“Study after study is being released about how 80% of jobs in the next five years are going to be in STEM-related fields,” said Todd Brown, Solanco High

School technology education teacher and organizer of the camp. “We felt (the STEM camp) was an avenue to give students exposure at a younger age so they can start the conversation with their parents and teachers about skills they’re interested in.”

Students may sign up for the camp for a set fee, which will include a shirt. Registration must be completed before Saturday, June 1. For more information or to register for the STEM camp, email Brown at todd_brown@solancosd.org.
