Solanco grad crowned Miss Gettysburg’s Teen

Taelor Martin is following a long line of young women from the Southern End who have excelled in scholarship competitions.

The 2024 graduate of Solanco High School is making a name for herself by instituting a distinctive service project and displaying a unique talent.

Martin was crowned Miss Gettysburg’s Teen 2025 on March 15 in a ceremony at the Gettysburg Community Theatre.

Martin expressed that she felt “not only relief, but appreciation for the opportunity to be a part of the Miss America organization and being able to share my CSI (Community Service Initiative).”

Residents of Pennsylvania are able to participate in any Miss America Opportunity (MAO) competition in the commonwealth, and Martin thought Gettysburg was the best fit for several reasons. The competition was held on a date when she was able to return to her home state from South Carolina, where she is in the middle of her freshman year at Clemson University.

“I have learned a lot of persistence and determination throughout the pageant system,” Martin said. “Even though I did

compete in other local pageants, this is the one that had the best opportunity for me with the scholarship availability. I think it just worked out well.”

Her responsibilities as Miss Gettysburg’s Teen include attending the community theater to serve as a role model for younger performers and sharing the borough’s rich history.

By winning the title in Gettysburg, Martin earned a spot in the Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen competition, which will be held Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21, at Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York.

She will once again share her CSI, called “Un Amigo Paratodos,” which translates to “A Friend for Everyone.”

“It focuses on not only on the bullying in our education system, but on building connections with English language learners,” said Martin. She has been volunteering at Solanco and other local high schools.

“I go in and I help students with their schoolwork and work to improve their academic and mental health profile,” she said.

“I feel the ability to speak Spanish expands my communications horizons. It allows me to share my CSI with more people and have more community interaction, especially

The Quarryville Lions Club completed its latest project at Memorial Park in time for the annual Memorial Day commemoration.

Joanne Black, the organization’s Veterans Memorial chairman, spearheaded a campaign to place six flagpoles surrounding an existing larger flagpole that flies the American flag.

The six new poles will have flags representing the six branches of the United States Armed Forces: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.

The project, which cost $43,326, was funded by contributions from the Quarryville Lions Club; members of the community; and grants from the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation, Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Service Foundation, and Land O’Lakes.

“I think it’s very important we honor the military branches,” said Black.

here in the Southern End. We do have a growing population of Spanish speakers. I feel like I have the ability to bring the community closer together.”

Martin, who is planning to double major in Spanish and biochemistry and become a pediatric oncologist, is working to publish research she conducted during her senior year of high school about how education affects the academic and mental profiles of students.

During the MAO competitions, Martin’s talent is a powerlifting routine. She begins with a hip-hop dance, then loads weights on a deadlift bar and lifts 325 pounds.

“(The powerlifting routine) does help me stand out, but it’s also more difficult in certain pageant areas that like traditional singing and dancing

Solanco announces graduation speaker

Brock Snider, a 2010 graduate of Solanco High School, has been named guest speaker for the Solanco Class of 2025 graduation.

During his time at Solanco, Snider was a multi-sport athlete in football, basketball, wrestling and baseball, and he also served as class president in both his junior and senior years. He participated as a peer mediator and student senate member and volunteered

his time at the Providence outdoor site and Solanco’s Halloween Hallways.

After graduating from Bloomsburg University with a degree in marketing/marketing management, Snider co-founded Oola Bowls, a business that now features more than 20 locations along the East Coast, with more on the horizon.

Snider resides in Conestoga with his wife, Alison, and their children, Hayden and Dawson.

talents,” she said. “It takes a good set of judges and a good pageant director to allow me to stand out like that.”

Martin’s uncommon skill helped her become Miss Solanco 2024, following in the footsteps of Noelle Schneider and Marla Davis, two women who have been big influences. Schneider was crowned Miss Lancaster County 2024.

“Tae and I share a unique bond as past titleholders in the Miss Solanco program,” said Schneider. “After her reign, I was thrilled when she chose to compete in the Miss America Opportunity. Her passion for service and her resilience shine brightly, and I can’t wait to see her showcase her remarkable talents on the Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen stage.”

The Southern End MAO competitors are a tight-

knit group that includes Martin, Schneider, and Kathryn Davis, a Lampeter-Strasburg graduate who is Miss Greater Reading’s Teen 2025.

“I know firsthand how intimidating the world of pageantry can be,” Schneider said. “That’s why I’m dedicated to mentoring young women in the Miss America Opportunity. I want to be a supportive resource for them, someone they can turn to for advice and encouragement. MAO is built on the values of sisterhood, and mentorship is a key part of that foundation. By connecting past and present titleholders, we can help support and inspire the next generation of young women to achieve their dreams.”

In addition to her MAO friends, Martin is grateful for her mother, Tonya; Andrea’s Academy of Dance; and Solanco High

School teacher Tony Cox, who helps Martin with her strength training.

She is also thankful she started competing in scholarship pageants. “I wanted to build my confidence in high school,” said Martin. “I had low self-esteem, so getting out there in pageants was an excellent way to not only share my talent, but also to grow as an individual.”

It has worked. “I feel overall more confident,” Martin said. “I have a better ability to commu -

nicate with individuals, better interview skills, whether I am interviewing for a job at college or for scholarships.”

She is proud to emblematize her hometown area. “It feels amazing to be able to represent the Solanco community,” Martin said. “Especially since the Miss Solanco organization is where my love for pageantry began. Being able to continue on and represent such a strong community feels very rewarding.”

at Memorial Park, which is located at 297 Park Ave. In 2013, the Lions Club led an effort to renovate the two pillars on either side of the park’s entrance along Kirkwood Pike (Route 472). One pillar is in memory of service members who died or were missing in action in World War I, while the other remembers those who died or were missing during World War II.

In 2022, the Lions Club headed a fundraising campaign for a monument which honors members of the armed forced who died while serving following World War II. Black said a group was conversing following the dedication of the monument and someone said it would look nice if there were flags representing the six military branches around the Stars and Stripes. “I said, ‘OK, we’ll see what we can do,’” Black recalled.

Now that the work is completed, Black is eager for the community to see all that has been accomplished. “It makes me feel proud we’re able to do something like this for the veterans and the community,” she said. “(People can) walk through, have a seat and relax, and take in everything around them. You can look at the flags and think about what they mean and the sacri -

fices made by our veterans.”

The work at Memorial Park is one example of how the Quarryville Lions Club serves the community. The group also assists the Solanco Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and helps people with vision and hearing difficulties.

The Quarryville Lions Club meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Daily Grind, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville.

“Anybody interested in joining is invited to come to a meeting and see what it is all about,” said Black. “We are always looking for new members.”

Lions Club member Ron Fichtner approves of the improvements to the park.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “As a Vietnam veteran, it means the world to me to honor veterans any way we can.”

Fichtner is in charge of planning the Memorial Day event, which will be held Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. If it rains, the commemoration will be held in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, which is several hundred yards up the hill from the flagpoles and monuments. Visitors should bring a lawn chair.

Pastor Stuart Osborne of Encounter Church will deliver the invocation.

The Solanco High School band will play patriotic music. Black will dedicate the new poles and flags.

Air Force Maj. Joseph Bledsoe III, a Solanco High School graduate, will be the guest speaker. Solanco senior Nick Mohler will be the youth speaker. “I need to know that when I’m gone, we have younger people to pick it up,” Fichtner said.

Quarryville once hosted a Memorial Day parade. After the pillars were dedicated, there were discussions about holding an annual ceremony in the park, and Fichtner planned the first one in 2014.

The Memorial Day event has special significance for Fichtner. “As an infantry veteran, I saw friends die doing unselfish things,” he said. A soldier Fichtner

knew by the nickname “Pop” was shot and killed by a sniper while Fichtner was standing nearby.

When Fichtner visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., he wanted to search for a mention of his friend but could not recall Pop’s given name. When a traveling wall came to Park City, Fichtner provided the date and location of Pop’s death and was handed a list of names and quickly realized Pop’s name was Johnny Ray Williams.

“I made a vow I would never forget his name again,” Fichtner said. “That is part of the reason this is so special to me, and I love being part of it.”

The fourth annual IronLeg Corp. Golf Outing will be held Saturday, May 24, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville.

The cost to participate includes the green fee, use of a cart, bagels in the morning, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages. The registration deadline is Friday, May 23. Golfers should check in at 7 a.m., and the outing will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. To register for the event or make a monetary donation, go to https://iron leg.org.

There will be prizes for the top two teams in the fourman scramble competition and opportunities to win a prize by scoring a hole-inone on any par 3. One hole will offer the chance to win a car with an ace.

There will be a silent auction of authenticated sports memorabilia, including framed boxing trunks signed by both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, a framed Saquon Barkley Philadelphia Eagles jersey, and an item signed by star Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. Iron-Leg merchandise will also be for sale.

Iron-Leg Corp., a 501(c)(3) charity, is a three-person

operation. Longtime friends Matthew Millhouse, Iron-Leg’s president, and vice president Sean Laukhuff founded the organization in 2021. Secretary/treasurer Ashley Kimmich joined in 2024.

The group’s mission is to help purchase high-level prosthetics for people from ages 1 through 18. “We help cover what insurance does not,” said Matthew, who lives in New Danville. “We help kids get better prosthetics while they’re young instead of after they’re done growing.”

Iron-Leg has generated a total of approximately $60,000 in the first three tournaments. The proceeds from this year’s golf outing will benefit a 7-year-old girl from Massachusetts named Abby. Abby, who will be at the event, was injured in a lawn mowing accident when she was 3.

The cause is especially meaningful for Matthew, whose son, Parker, was born without a right leg. Parker, 12, is doing well and playing baseball this spring. Matthew decided he wanted to assist families who are in a similar situation, and Sean eagerly agreed to help. Sean, who resides in Reading, is following his uncle’s lead: Ken

Laukhuff answered a mother’s call for help when her son’s last wish was to talk from one truck to another on a CB radio. That charitable act was the genesis for what is now known as the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy.

Kimmich, from Millersville, was friends with Sean and gladly stepped in to help with the Iron-Leg Corp. after her kids graduated from high school. “I was always involved with booster clubs and love helping kids with sports,” she said. “What (Sean and Matthew) do is really touching. For kids who want to run or play a sport, they need better prosthetics, and it’s sad if a (child) can’t play a sport because their parents can’t afford it. So I decided to join their team.”

Iron-Leg Corp is grateful for its sponsors, including

Lancaster Nissan, Yale Electric, Aerotek, Lynch Financial LLC, The Exterior Company (TEC), Skywalker Electric, and Dent Techs.

A trademark of Iron-Leg events is a huge American flag. “We’re a lot of fun. Anybody can say that, but we go the extra mile,” Matthew said. Matthew served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1995 to 2001. In 2019, he enlisted in the Air Force National Guard and continues to serve his country. Sean was in the United States Army from 1993 to 2005.

The trio shows no signs of slowing down. Iron-Leg held its first football game last fall, and another is planned for 2026. The IronLeg dance is also slated to return next year.
