Middle Schools To Hold Family Engagement Night BY FRANCINE FULTON
Providing a fun night for students while their parents learn about important resources available in the community is the goal of Family Engagement Night, to be held on Friday, May 20, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Smith Middle
School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. The theme of the event, a joint effort between Smith Middle School and Swift Middle School, will be “Back to the ‘50s Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Staff members, students and families are encouraged to dress in ‘50s fashions at the event. See Middle Schools pg 8
Artillery and rifle demonstrations will be part of the Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event.
Event To Bring Civil War History To Life Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations event will be held at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The event will be open on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camps will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20. At the Living History camp, reenactors will portray President Abraham Lincoln, first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and their sons Robert and Tad as they were in 1865. People may visit with the family members throughout the weekend and participate in a family sit-down at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tad will be present on Saturday only. The Living History camp will also feature generals; the Invalid Corps; a Confederate soldier portrayed by Al Avery; author and program organizer J. Arthur Moore, sharing information
out the weekend. Visitors may access the parking area from Swift Road. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available along the edge of the field closest to the event. Alumni Association Sets Distance Challenge The Solanco Cross-Country and Track Alumni Association will host a one-hour race and team relay on Saturday, June 11, at the Art Harrington Track Complex at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. In the case of severe weather, the event will be held on Sunday, June 12. Registration is open to all Solanco student-athletes, families, alumni, and friends of Solanco cross-country. Re-enactors Alan Farley and Faith Farley will act as members of the United States Christian Commission. Visitors may converse and pray with them throughout the event and join them for a worship service on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. following the battle re-enactment. The Farleys will also have their coffee wagon on-site. Attendees may visit both Union and Confederate military camps, which will include infantry, dismounted cavalry, gun collections, camp life information, artillery and rifle demonstrations, a mortician, and a lead casting station. Firing demonstrations will take place on the battlefield, as will a battle on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The event, which will take place under the lights, will feature two races: one for individuals and one for relay teams of four runners. Individuals and relay teams will attempt to log as many miles as they can during the one-hour run on the Solanco track. Two special categories to be featured this year are the Walk With Waggs Challenge, which will be held during the individual race, and the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country (LLLXC) Team Division. Middle Schools from pg 1 Event organizer Tim Tercha, sixthgrade social studies teacher at Smith Middle School, noted that activities will take place outdoors. “We will have tables on our sidewalk in the front of the building where community organizations from Solanco School District will set up. We also will have an area that will be roped off for an antique car display by my father, John,” Tercha said. “There will be games that our students will be running and face painting. A live DJ will play ‘50s hits, and the PTO will provide hot dogs, chips and drinks. “ Tercha noted that Family Engagement Night was canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, but the schools have decided to revive the event this year. “Family Engagement is a committee in the district,” Tercha explained. “The committee is composed of teachers, and it’s a group that typically tries to organize events like this where organizations in the community get in touch with parents.” Community organizations that will be represented at the event will include Solanco Food Bank, Quarryville Library, SECA, Joining Forces for Families, Compass Mark, First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, IU13 (Intermediate Unit of Lancaster-Lebanon), Black Rock Retreat, and Solid Rock. Anthony Cavallaro, the mayor of Quarryville, is also scheduled to attend. “We have a lot of need in our district as far as families go,” said Tercha. “(During Family Engagement Night), we put parents and families in touch with services that they might not know about. The kids have something to do while their parents are speaking to a representative from a church or SECA or Black Rock Retreat or a community food bank or a summer camp.” The evening also gives current fifth-graders an opportunity to visit the middle school they may attend next year and for middle-schoolers to get reacquainted. “We want to have both schools come together,” said Tercha, whose wife, Danielle, is a sixth-grade teacher at Swift Middle School. “The kids get split up after elementary school, and some go to Swift and some go to Smith, and they may not see each other again until high school. It is great to bring both groups of students together.”

Brian Caldwell PR’d in the discus by over seven feet to lead a sweep there with John Sankus and Connor Smith, who settled for first in the javelin. Noah Baber and Reimold went 1-2 in the high with Baber following Josiah Forren in the long. Trent McDowell, who ran his fastest 110 hurdles for a victory, finished a triple sweep with Trenten Henry taking third. Riley Ford was the standout on the track, winning the 100 and 200 sprints and anchoring the winning 400 relay with Jonathan Morales, Forren and Michael Banguna, who, along with Morales, provided a 200 sweep. Solanco also won the 3200 relay with the Hartigan brothers along with Wyatt Tomison and Anthony Solis-Morales.

Grace Community Church of Willow Street will offer a summer music camp as part of its Outpour Kids program. The weeklong camp, set for Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., will serve children entering first through eighth grades. Children of all experience and ability levels are welcome. “It’s kind of like secular musical theater camp meets VBS (vacation Bible school),” said Katie Wieand, director of Outpour Kids and the children’s music ministry and administrative coordinator for Grace Community Church. “We’re able to help all of them at their different levels grow in their abilities.” The camp will include devotionals, outdoor games, crafts and music. Students will prepare for the performance of a baseball-themed musical titled “Sermon on the Mound! - Catch the Spirit.” All children in the camp will participate in the musical, but for those wishing to perform special solos or speaking parts, there will be advance auditions on Sunday, June 5. Performers will be asked to learn their parts before the start of camp. “Our goal is to build their confidence, musical abilities and stage presence while gaining a knowledge and love for Jesus Christ,” said Wieand. The entire community is invited to attend the free performance of the musical on July 22 at 7 p.m. at the church. In addition, Wieand announced, the Lancaster Barnstormers have invited the Outpour Kids summer campers to perform “God Bless America” before the Friday, Aug. 5, home game against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks. This is the second year that Wieand has led the summer music
