All proceeds from the day will benefit the nonprofit Bridlepath Equine Center’s therapeutic horsemanship program. Bridlepath currently has 30 participants in the program, and there is a wait list, which is estimated to be two years. “We need more horses and more instructors,” said Swope.
Since Bridlepath is a therapeutic program and not a therapy program, the cost is not covered by insurance and must be paid out of pocket. The fundraiser allows Bridlepath to charge no more than 50% of the cost of a lesson.
“The reason we make it so low for cost is these families are paying for a lot of things out of pocket, not in the therapeutic horsemanship world, but in everyday life,” Swope said. “So we don’t want to be in the spot where we’re not serving people solely because of funds. We want to provide - and they deserve - the best that we can give them.”
Kris stated Bridlepath offers scholarships and financial aid. “We don’t want to turn anybody away,” she said. Anyone interested in sponsoring a participant or donating to the center’s general fund can go to www.bridle pathequinecenter.org.
Swope, a native of Paradise, was studying behavioral science in college when she got an internship at a therapeutic program.
“That’s where I found my love for it,” she said. Swope’s family and Kris’ family were close friends. When Kris and her husband, Lee, purchased the Quarryville property and named it Trail-
side Farm, they asked Swope if she would be interested in partnering with them.
Bridlepath opened its doors on Sept. 12, 2023.
Sessions typically last an hour, but there are 30-minute classes available if necessary. Approximately 15 minutes of the hour sessions are spent unmounted, where the students tack and brush the horse and build a relationship. Lessons are individualized based on the needs and the goals of the kids.
“We don’t put a ceiling on a student just because they have a disability,” said Swope. “Everybody learns differently. If a student wants to learn to jump or barrel race, we will build a foundation to do that. We don’t treat or diagnose. We teach and facilitate for students with special needs, based around horsemanship. Swope added that the lessons provide physical, emotional, behavioral, and intellectual benefits.
Swope said 50 volunteers help make it all possible.
“The Lord’s hand has played a really big role in this, too,” she said. “It’s been cool seeing the community come together. While we’re not a Christian-affiliated organization, we still show the love of Jesus through what we do.”
That means treating everyone with kindness. “We serve all sorts of people from all types of backgrounds,” Swope said. “That’s what makes it fun. Everybody has something to bring to the table.”

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is seeking civic and environmental leaders in 10th through 12th grades to keep Pennsylvania clean and beautiful through the Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program.
One of the program’s aims is to attract the next generation of leaders to careers in state government. In December, the administration announced substantial increases in
the number of Generation Z (Gen Z) and millennial employees who have joined the commonwealth workforce in recent years. This partnership, now in its fourth year, seeks to build on that success.
The Young Ambassadors program empowers young community stewards and civic leaders to become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to train and network
with industry leaders, state agencies, local media, and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network, and they will receive a taste of life in the public service sector.
Students will be chosen through a competitive application process. Applicants should be passionate about the environment and committed to protecting Pennsylvania’s natural beauty and environmental health through volunteerism and leadership.
Chosen candidates will be asked to commit to serve as Young Ambassadors from September 2025 through May 2026 and represent and uphold the mission and values of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.
Other responsibilities will include attending six mandatory virtual education sessions, conducting a community assessment and creating a summary presentation, organizing a
community cleanup event through Pick Up Pennsylvania, and conducting one community education event or activity. Non-mandatory education sessions will also be offered on a variety of topics.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide education and training to program participants on topics such as the impact of litter on roadways, litter prevention, waste management and recycling, civic engagement and related public policy, volunteer management, and social media marketing. The program will provide networking opportunities to not only build a sense of community within the program but also to promote professional development of the individual students. In addition, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has partnered with industry leaders to provide job shadowing days to select Young

educational program that will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A food vendor will be on-site for all three days. The encampment will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 17. Visitors can meet the generals at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and meet the presidents at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be a battle re-enactment at 1 p.m.
On May 18, camps will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. People can speak with the generals and President Davis in the morning prior to a church service at noon. The battle will begin at 1:15 p.m.
In addition to touring the camp and speaking with the participants, there will be Civil War collectors on hand, and authors will sign books.
Attendees will have the chance to learn about Civil War-era medicine, and a blacksmith will provide demonstrations. The tactical demonstrations
will include firearms and artillery, as well as a battle re-enactment.
Director Stanley T. White said the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society hosted a French and Indian War winter encampment on March 20, 1993. “It was bitterly cold, and the enactors endured a bad snowstorm,” he added.
White noted that the current version of the Civil War encampment at the Robert Fulton Birthplace was started by Jonathan Welch and family, who camped out in June 2014. “They built a small camp area and exhibited a nice variety of artifacts around their campfire, including a Civil War saddle, bridle and sword, and cooking implements,” White said.
In 2016, “living history” became an integral part of the encampment by adding costumed actors portraying generals, majors, and presidents. “A visitor could ask questions and get a well-informed, in-character answer to their questions,” said White.
A group of actors at an encampment
said Moore.
Moore was introduced to John Hauck at another event seven years ago, and Hauck has been bringing his friends to the Quarryville encampment ever since. “It has grown over the years,” Moore said. “Now we have Union and Confederate encampments and a battlefield.”
Some participants donate to the historical society,
and Moore will make a donation from proceeds of sales of his books.
He stated it is critical that people remember the impact of the Civil War.
“As time goes on, that’s a piece of history you see very little of anymore,” said Moore. “Yet it was a significant character change in this country. It was like an earthquake in our history.”
Moore, a former teacher, held a smaller event at the Intercourse Library for three years, featuring a day encampment and presentations in the community room. When he was looking for a new event to join, he met Welch. “I was looking around, and Jonathan heard about it and invited me,”
A re-enactor speaks to children at a previous encampment.

Coast Guard urges people to practice boating safety
In connection with National Safe Boating Week - Saturday to Friday, May 17 to 23 - the Coast Guard urges all Americans to familiarize themselves with best practices for a safe boating experience. Everyone in the boat should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for the water activity. People should file a float plan with someone they trust; the plan should detail where boaters are going and when
they expect to return.
Those enjoying an outing on a boat should have a reliable means of communication for their area, be it a marine radio or a cell phone.
Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, so it is recommended that people do not consume alcohol while boating.
Anyone who would like to obtain a boat operation certificate or who wants to brush up on his or her skills may consider taking a
boating skills course. Local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission-approved boating safety courses throughout the year.
People are also encouraged to schedule a vessel safety check. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct these checks free of charge at any time throughout the year.
