Mt. Eden Will Celebrate Its 150th Anniversary

Rev. Margaret Rohnacher has established this mantra during her four years as pastor of Mt. Eden Lutheran Church. The church will follow that mantra during a special service on Sunday, May 17, to commemorate its 150th anniversary. Worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. at 1241 May Post Office Road, Quarryville.
The gathering will feature a rededication of the building and a special liturgy, and congregants and guests will share memories. Everyone is welcome.

Library Adds to Collection of Items
The Library of Things is growing at the Quarryville Library Center. The collection allows patrons to borrow items they may only need once or twice, and it provides the opportunity to try a product before buying it.
The available items include musical instruments, baking pans, and hotspots. In addition, American Girl dolls and Tonie toys, as well as puzzles and games, have been available for the last decade, and metal detector kits and blood pressure cuffs will be added soon.
One Solanco Community Breakfast Set
Community members are invited to come together for the One Solanco Community Breakfast, an awareness event focused on challenges and trends regarding poverty, youth, and mental health in the Solanco community. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 19, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. A buffet breakfast will be available at 7:15 a.m., followed by the program and presentations at 8 a.m. Attendees will hear from local organizations working to strengthen the community, including Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, New Hope Counseling Center, and the Solanco School District. Each organization will share insights into its current initiatives and highlight the power of collaboration in creating meaningful, lasting change.
The One Solanco Community Breakfast aims to raise awareness, spark important conversations, and foster connections among residents, leaders, and advocates who are passionate about building a stronger, more united Solanco community.
“This inspiring morning is an opportunity not just to learn, but to connect with others who care deeply about the future of our community,” organizers shared. “Together, we can work toward solutions that create hope and opportunity for all.”

Run Sets 5K Celebration
Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster-Lebanon has announced the return of its end-of-season 5K Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, May 16, at 9 a.m. at Greenfield, 1838 Colonial Village Lane, Lancaster.
The noncompetitive, family-friendly 5K serves as the culminating end-of-season event for local Girls on the Run participants, as well as community members. Girls on the Run combines physical activity with engaging lessons to help participants build confidence, foster
healthy relationships, and develop vital life skills. Over the course of the 10-week program, participants prepare to complete a 5K, while learning how to navigate emotions, grow as a team, and make a positive impact in their communities.
Organizers expect more than 2,500 runners, which includes 1,130 GOTR participants and their 5K buddies, as well as hundreds of community members. The celebration will feature music, “happy hair”

“We want to enliven the spirit even more,” said Rohnacher. “(The congregants are already) a pretty live group, but we want to strengthen the spirit among us, welcome back some previous members, and remember our history.”

The pastor said Mt. Eden’s mission “is to be an instrument of Jesus Christ in word and deed to our community and beyond.”
The church’s roots trace back to June 1860 when the pastorate at Zion Reformed Church, New Providence, organized a Sunday school at the Springville Schoolhouse and became the forerunner of what is now Mt. Eden Lutheran. The Sunday school opened June 24 with five girls’ classes and four boys’
classes and closed Sept. 30.
In the late 1870s, services led by Rev. J.V. Eckert were held every few weeks in the Bowery Schoolhouse, which was located across the street from the current sanctuary. It became the first Lutheran church in the community.
The cornerstone for the original church building was laid in May 1878 on what is now a parking lot.
The current building was constructed in 1969. Mt. Eden remains an active congregation, helping organizations such as Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Cornerstone Reproductive Health, and the North Star Initiative, and also assists local students.
“It is a joy to minister to the people of Mt. Eden,” said Rohnacher. “When we come together, it is like a large family, sharing both the difficulties and joys of life. We are always happy to welcome worshippers.”
Thaddeus Stevens and York College Form Agreement
Representatives from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and York College of Pennsylvania recently celebrated the signing of a new articulation agreement between the two institutions. The agreement creates a seamless pathway for students who complete an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Administration at Thaddeus Stevens College to continue their education and earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at York College of Pennsylvania.
Thaddeus Stevens College is a two-year, accredited technical college that is known for its hands-on training leading to jobs in high demand with strong wages. Founded in 1905 with 15 students, Thaddeus Stevens College has grown to more than 1,400 students and 25 technical programs.
Established in 1787, York College is a private four-year institution in York, offering more than 70 undergraduate majors and a robust portfolio of graduate programs. Known for its emphasis on experiential learning
and career preparation, the institution hosts more than 3,800 students in its programs.
Through the agreement, students who earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Administration with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or greater from Thaddeus Stevens College are assured admission into York College’s Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program. Credits earned at or transferred from Thaddeus Stevens College will be applied toward the degree, up to a maximum of 75 credit hours.

Schoolroom Museum Posts Open Hours
The Schoolroom Museum at the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, will be open on Sunday, May 17, from 1 to 4 p.m.
An honor wall and other photos are now in place in the restored schoolroom. A new exhibit is in the planning stage; it will feature Dorothy Graham Rineer, a 1941 Bart High School graduate and longtime Bart postmaster.
The museum is open every third Sunday of the month, as well as by appointment by calling curator Barry Girvin at 717-471-8668.

Grants to Help Fund Native Plantings
The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program. The program, funded by Giant, aims to invest in native plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $100,000 will be donated for native community plantings. The funding is available to tax-exempt organizations, including local groups, governments, and schools. Eligible projects must be shovel-ready and include native plantings and direct costs relating to planting.
Eligible expenses include plants native to Pennsylvania, equipment, educational signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest quantity of native plants. Up to $4,000 may be awarded to a project.

Southeast Region of PFBC Promotes Waterway Well-being

The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part
of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor

recreational activities.
One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water.
“I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.”
The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, at Speedwell Forge Lake. The Southeast Region
office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, primarily serves as the rules and regulation enforcement headquarters for PFBC, but it does offer some services and amenities.
As outreach and education coordinator, Desko does work out of the Lititz office periodically, but he spends the majority of his work time in the field and around water.
“I really do enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life,” said Desko. “I grew up in a very rural county. I just enjoy the variety of opportunities around here. We all enjoy fishing. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share this love of being on the water. It feels good to introduce people to these sports.”
Housed in a renovated farmhouse, PFBC’s Southeast Region office employs
administrative staff and law enforcement or Water Conservation Officers, who enforce fishing and boating regulations, creel limits and water pollution rules, as well as promote water safety and assist in trout stocking operations. The Southeast Region office also processes boat registrations, launch permits and discounted fishing licenses for disabled veterans, and it offers educational materials and opportunities for residents to borrow fishing rods.
“Our general mission
is to protect, conserve and enhance the state’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities,” said Desko. “We do deliver educational programming in the Southeast Region. We do a lot of introductory programs, like teaching people how to fish and teaching people how to boat.”

Rotary Club Honors Student of the Month
Delaney Gote, a senior at Solanco High School, has been selected as one of Lancaster South Rotary Club’s Students of the Month for April. She was presented to the club by Zac Bauermaster, principal of Solanco High School, on April 22. Students of the Month are selected on the basis of academic excellence as well as school and community service.
Delaney is the daughter of Matthew and Jonelle Gote of Quarryville. She competes on the varsity girls’ volleyball and varsity girls’ softball teams, and she has earned various Lancaster-Lebanon League honors in both sports. Delaney also is the president of the Varsity Club and a member of the Renaissance Club. She serves as a mentor to fourth-grade students at Quarryville Elementary.
Outside of school, Delaney plays club volleyball for the PA Elite team. She also volunteers with the SLC Buddies program in Quarryville. Following graduation, Delaney will attend Penn State Berks, where she will continue her athletic career as a member of the women’s volleyball team.

The Susquehanna River serves as a boundary between the Southeast and Southcentral regions.
“There’s a diversity of experiences in the Southeast Region,” said Desko. “We have stocked trout streams and wild trout streams. There are also migratory fish; the Delaware River has shad coming up. There are paddling opportunities for whitewater kayaking, as well as gentle paddling on lakes and ponds.
“In other regions, mountains and backwoods serve as the backdrops,” continued Desko. “We have plenty of fishing opportunities here, but they may be in places you don’t expect them to be. There are places you can catch
monster flathead catfish. There are a lot of places in this region where you can get into some exceptional fishing; it’s just cities serve as the backgrounds instead of mountains.”
An inland state, Pennsylvania boasts a total of more than 86,000 miles of streams and rivers. In the state, nearly 850,000 fishing licenses, 350,000 boat registrations and 150,000 launch permits are sold each year, all of which help fund the PFBC.
The PFBC stocks 3.2 million raised trout in 684 streams and 130 lakes in Pennsylvania annually.
“We do see people across ages, from youth to retirees,” said Desko. “You have a lot of adults who are starting to mentor their children out on the water. When anglers were surveyed, they said the reason they go out is not to catch big fish; it’s to spend time with family and friends, unplug and get away for recreation. They’re looking to spend time in the outdoors and reset their minds.”
