The answer to the question people repeatedly ask Tami Shaub is yes.
Yes, the A-Team is holding a talent show this spring.
This year’s production will be held Sunday, May 4, at 6 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. There is no charge for admission. Freewill donations will be accepted.
The talent show will feature singing, skits, comedy acts, and a poem reading. Since it will occur on May 4, the A-Team has chosen the theme “May the Force of God Be With You.”
Shaub, A-Team director, who admits to never seeing a “Star Wars” franchise movie, said the theme will be intertwined in the show.
Except for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the A-Team talent show is an annual event. “I’ve lost track of how many (years), but it’s more than 10,” Shaub said, noting that 300 people attended the first show.
Shaub’s nephew Brandon LeFevre is known for springing surprises at the show, so he is reticent to disclose too many details. He did reveal he would be singing a duet with another A-Team member and performing a solo
comedy act, with a commercial break in between.
“I like to make people laugh,” LeFevre said. “It’s awesome. I have fun up there.”
Joseph Pyle and Steve Elinsky will be performing a duet of the Bon Jovi song “I Could Make a Living Out of Lovin’ You.” “It will be fun,” Pyle said. “I get a little nervous, but I just smile and do my best.”
Kimberly Gaus will sing the hymn “Trust and Obey.” Being in front of an audience does not faze Gaus. “I don’t mind it,” she said. “I like it because I am singing to God.”
Shaub said she is always wowed
Solanco Neighborhood Ministries to hold May Challenge

Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) is seeking the community’s continuing support as it faces challenging circumstances.

previously the SECA skate rink.
A decade before the sport of pickleball was invented, Don Wagner was riding his bicycle to the Quarryville park that is now home to the Southern End Community Association (SECA).
Flash forward 70 years, and Don’s name will appear on a sign that adorns the dasher boards surrounding four new pickleball courts constructed on what was
The four courts, built by The Breneman Company, were completed a month ahead of schedule on March 29 and officially opened to the public on April 7. A dedication ceremony in honor of the late Don Wagner and the late Ray and Kim Sullivan will be held Thursday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at the courts, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville.

Solanco School District, the Holtwood area in the Penn Manor School District and West Lampeter Township in Lampeter-Strasburg.
SNM’s director of programs, Todd Capitao, noted that the number of people who need help has “jumped dramatically” since Solanco Neighborhood Ministries moved to its current location, 14 S. Church St., Quarryville, two years ago.
“Over the last two years we keep seeing an increase in calls (seeking assistance) coming in,” said Capitao. “It keeps going up year over year.”
As of April, there had been more than 300 requests made this year compared to the same time last year.
“It’s not an influx of people who want an Easter meal or something like that,” said Capitao. “It’s mostly people facing housing concerns.”
SNM housing advocates are working with approximately 35 families in different stages of homelessness. “We are trying to connect them with resources,” Capitao said. “Sometimes they are able to use food resources we have, and then they have the money to save toward rent or utility bills.”
SNM works with landlords and searches for vacancies in apartment complexes. “From the negative side, we’re seeing more people coming in with those types of needs,” said Capitao. “The positive
side is that we’re able to (help some of them find housing) through the different resources we have.”
Solanco Neighborhood Ministries operates the Solanco Food Bank, which has also been busier recently.
In the last two years, the food bank has gone from serving 220 unique families to 310 families (854 individuals), an increase of 29%, SNM executive director Teresa Dolan said. She added that the need for emergency orders has increased from 22 families to 87 families (206 individuals).
Rising prices at the supermarket and the possibility of a funding cut could affect programs, although Solanco Neighborhood Ministries primarily relies on donations from the community.
SNM will be getting a big boost. Putting Others First, a local philanthropy partnership, has contributed $20,000 to the ministry and is challenging the community to match the gift in the month of May. Anyone wishing to donate during May should call 717-786-4308 or go to https://snministries.org for information about donating.
Capitao said that matching challenges are an effective way of raising funds, and he is urging those interested in contributing to consider doing the same thing.
“This match opportunity is really important to continue extra giving because it is uncertain and we are busier,” said Dolan. “The numbers of families (needing assistance) has increased, and the cost of food items has increased, and we don’t turn anybody away.”
SNM distributes food Mondays through Fridays in the morning and afternoon with varying times, and the food bank is also open the second Saturday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m.
The lobby is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon, and the items usually include fresh produce from Giant and fresh bread from Wegmans.
“More food donations would be great, especially for our school program because that keeps growing,” Dolan said. SNM’s Student Weekend Eating Program (SWEEP) provides students in kindergarten through eighth grade with six meals they take home for the weekend. SWEEP serves 310 students, and that number grows every year, Dolan said.
SNM will hold a friendly “foodraising” competition between local churches from Friday, May 16, through Friday, June 20, that Capitao hopes will bolster the organization’s resources for summer.
Individuals who want to participate with the ministry should call or come in for an appointment. SNM will ask questions related to household, income, expenses, and needed resources, such as food, transportation, health care, GED resources, and clothing. “We then try to connect them with a resource advocate who can help them reach their goals,” said Dolan.

The Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) recently announced the winners of its fifth annual Photography Contest, which asked participants to submit photos
taken in the watershed. This area includes 208 square miles in southern Chester and Lancaster counties, as well as Cecil County, Md. Entries were judged in four categories for youths and adults: Wildlife, Landscapes, Trailcam and Agriculture.
This year’s contest netted a total of 80 photos, up from 65 entered last year. Jennifer Warren, vice president of the Oxford Area Historical Association, and her son Finn judged the photo contest.
“We received many entries this year with notable photos taken within the Octoraro watershed,” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest organizer, adding that among the entries were those submitted by members of the Students of the Watershed club at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. “OWA also partnered with Octorara high school and Amanda Keifer, educa-
tor, and the Students of the Watershed members for a robust youth submission of 40 photographs.”
For the second consecutive year, Best of Show was awarded to Steven Berkowitz of Kirkwood for his photo of a baby fox, called a kit.
Kevin Joyce of Atglen won the People’s Choice Award for a photo of a cemetery at sunrise. The photo, which was titled “Misty Mourning” by the photographer, was taken at Glen Run Cemetery in Atglen.
The winners of the show were announced at the OWA annual membership meeting on March 27 at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard in Quarryville. Attendees were asked
to vote for their favorite photo at the event, where Joyce was chosen as the winner.
In the adult Agriculture division, Sprenkle won first place. Anita Bower of Nottingham won second place, and Lynne Cherico of Colora, Md., captured third place. Cherico won first place in the Landscapes division, followed by Donna McCool of Cochranville, who

then voted. A-Team was a unanimous selection. “When I asked them why they chose the A-Team, they didn’t miss a beat and stated, ‘Well, because we are awesome!’” Shaub said.
The A-Team, made up of people from all age groups, meets two Thursdays a month. Joyfully Made Fellowship holds a service each Sunday. The church is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the service sandwiched between fellowship and time for crafts. Shaub said that allows parents to drop off their son or daughter prior to or after attending another service in the community.
“The (students) enjoy having church together as opposed to when some of them go to church with their families, and it’s hard for them to be quiet or still, and the music is too loud,” she said. “They can just be themselves at church and in all the activities we do.”
Shaub said she learned a lot by watching her sister, Jodi LeFevre, care for Brandon. “I got to see firsthand what they go through as a family with a special needs child,” Shaub said. “I didn’t know what that was like from their angle. That has helped me learn more about (what) parents need (and) what these students go through on an hourly basis.”
A support group for parents and caregivers of students with disabilities meets on the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Joyfully Made Fellowship.
Shaub noted the idea for a talent show came after she saw a show featuring special needs students.

children and adults,” SECA director Trevor Marsh said, adding “(pickleball courts) fall right in line with our mission statement.”
The community had been clamoring for authentic pickleball courts since Marsh took over two years ago. SECA had occasionally set up courts with temporary nets on its basketball courts. “People kept asking when we were going to get legitimate pickleball courts, so we looked into the best plan of action,” Marsh said. “We pondered whether to pick a new location or revamp something we already have. A few people play hockey occasionally, but (the rink) was pretty much just being used for soccer. That’s the perfect place (for pickleball courts) because it takes up such a large footprint of our property.”
SECA decided their focus of the 2024 ExtraGive would be generating funds for permanent pickleball courts, and $8,900 was raised. “We are grateful. The community responded well,” Marsh said. The cost of the pickleball project was approximately $26,000, Marsh said. “We had to decide if we wanted to make professional-looking courts or do we just get nets and paint lines?” said Marsh. “The
surface was in decent shape. We decided if we were going to do it, we were going to do it right and see what we could do to raise the money.”
The community came through again. An anonymous donation was made in memory of the Sullivans, known as gracious people who taught many how to play pickleball on the temporary courts in 2019. Marsh received a phone call from Laura Walker, who said her mother, Jan Wagner, wanted to make a sizable contribution in memory of her husband, Don, who passed away two years ago. Don was a member of one of SECA’s first board of directors. “I felt (the donation) was a good use for his legacy,” Jan said. Jan was thrilled to see the new courts, which she said are the only outdoor pickleball courts in Lancaster County south of Willow Street. “My husband was very instrumental when they put the skatepark up, which was a hot item back then,” she said. “I am very happy. He worked so hard over the years and saved so much. I’m just happy we could do this.”
job easier. That way we didn’t have to do the job halfway. That made my life easier, and it made it easier to go and have a legitimate project here. We were able to pay a company that does this nationwide.”
SECA’s pickleball courts are open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. A recent meeting was held to discuss plans for the courts, including possible leagues and tournaments.
“This opens a lot of doors for us,” said Marsh. “It’s a great project for the community.”
•
Marsh was also ecstatic. “It was awesome,” he said. “One of the hardest parts of my job is fundraising. To have somebody reach out and commit such a large amount of money to (the project) makes my
Annabelle Urbine of BSA Girl Scout Troop 76 is in the planning stages of an Eagle Scout project, which will improve the wall surrounding the courts and add paddle racks. A tournament may be held to raise money for that project.

The Learning Station theater department will perform the comedy play “Gone With the Gust” by Tim Kelly on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 10, at 3 and 7 p.m. The production will take place at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz.
Learning Station homeschool co-op has a large theater department that attracts students from all over Lancaster County, with many coming from the Ephrata, Lititz, Solanco, and Elizabethtown areas.
The show focuses on Lone Pine Films in Hollywood, which is slated to make a movie based on a
sensational new novel, “Gone With the Gust.” Peggy Tempest, the most powerful star in town, is slated to play the lead, but to keep her ego in check, the producers pretend they want an unknown actress for the part. They find the ideal girl, Vicki Rawlins, and the press builds her up to be the next Hollywood “it” girl. But when it is discovered that the producers do not actually have the film rights to the novel, Tempest sues.

Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, which educates and supports women facing unplanned pregnancies. “All proceeds go directly to benefit client services,” Straub said.
Menu items will include homemade scones, finger sandwiches and desserts and an assortment of teas.
A highlight of the event each year is the table decorations. “Individual hostesses volunteer to decorate a table, and they invite their friends to sit at their table,” explained Straub, noting that prizes are awarded to the top tables. “There are winners for creativity and (other categories).” She added that some table hostesses bring their own teapots and cups and bake individualized treats for the guests.
In addition to the food, the fundraiser will include a live auction led by H.K. Keller. Among the items on the auction block will be tickets to Sight & Sound, Longwood Gardens and the Ark Encounter in Kentucky.
“We get donations from the community with things like gift baskets and wreaths and gift certificates to local businesses,” said Straub. “We buy potted flowers and hanging plants, and we auction those off as well.” She noted that some of the flowers will be given as prizes for the table decorating contest. Cornerstone Reproductive Health is located at 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap. The facility offers medical-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound service to confirm viable pregnancies. Appointments are free and confidential. The vision of the ministry is “to empower individuals to embrace life-honoring choices.”
The agency also has a fully equipped mobile unit, which offers the same services as the clinic. Current parking locations and hours are Solid Rock Youth Center, Quarryville, Mondays, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Grocery Outlet, New Holland, Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; and Yoder’s Country Market, New Holland, Thursdays, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
“We just got approval to park at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center on Monday mornings,” Straub added.
