New Hope Counseling Center celebrates building dedication
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
It was a big day for New Hope Counseling Center, one that was over a decade in the making.
Supporters, volunteers, community leaders, and local clergy gathered at New Hope in Quarryville on March 26 for a ribbon-cutting and building dedication ceremony.
The celebration marked the completion of a successful fundraising campaign to support the purchase and renovation of the center’s building at 307 Chestnut St. and the expansion of counseling services. The building was formally dedicated as the Emory D. Wagner Building.
“This is the culmination of several years of thinking and praying about if this is the right location and if we should purchase the building,” New Hope executive
director Deb Riddell said. “The board was deliberate about thinking this through.”
The project was funded through the New Hope for a Healthier Community Capital Campaign. More than 125 donors contributed over $1.1 million toward the effort. A lead donation was given by Dwight E. Wagner in honor of his father, Emory D. Wagner. The building is now the Emory D. Wagner Building.
“A lot of people rallied around to help this project happen,” Riddell said. “I am beyond grateful for the community, and I am amazed how God brought this all to fruition. It looked like an impossible task for us. We’d never raised anything near this amount, and yet, the community rallied and helped this to happen.”
In 2023, New Hope was presented with the opportunity to purchase the building where its

Two fundraisers this spring will benefit the Quarryville Library.
The board of trustees will hold a chicken barbecue, plant sale, book sale, and yard sale on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville.
It will be the first time the library will host a yard sale in the spring; one is also held each October.

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair.
“Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”
The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.
The event will feature free entry and free parking.
Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.
“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared.
“Probably the farthest one is VisitErie or Warren County, but we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”

offices have been located since 2004. Riddell said, “The building’s convenient, yet private, location is ideal for New Hope clients, and purchasing the building ensured that compassionate, professional, and affordable counseling will remain available to the Solanco community.”
New Hope officially purchased the building in January 2024. Riddell said

completed renovations have increased capacity and therapeutic options. “Renovations created more and larger offices for counselors so that more than two family members can participate comfortably in a counseling session,” she said. “New features include a large room for group counseling as well as art/ play therapy. The renovated facility enables New Hope to offer group counseling programs for those dealing with grief, blended families, or parenting or co-parenting issues.”
Riddell added that New Hope plans to offer support groups at no cost to partic-

ipants, and the organization recently expanded its no-fee program at Solanco High School to serve more students.
The counseling center is funded by the New Hope Community Closet Thrift Store, 128 Townsedge Drive, Quarryville.
“About 70% of our clients receive financial assistance,” Riddell said. “From the very beginning, the board never wanted to turn anyone away because they could not afford the full rate of counseling.”

company constructed the building that New Hope occupies in 1980 and is also responsible for many buildings in the Quarryville area, as well as Tanglewood Manor Golf Club.
His son, Dwight, was one of the featured speakers at the dedication ceremony, along with Mike Thornton of Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, another one of the capital campaign’s main supporters.
“As you age in life, I think you learn that you got where you are because of community, and the success in your business is because of community,” Dwight said. “So you need to give back. This is just another step in a journey of givebacks I’ve been able to contribute.”
Dwight was emotional while discussing his father’s impact on him and the community. “It’s a lot,” he said of the cere-
mony. “He was my mentor. He was a great guider to my career. He planted all the seeds that gave me the skillset to do what I’ve done in my career. It’s fantastic.”

participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.
“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”
Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.
The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash
Water Park in Tipton.
The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.
Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.
At noon, Clyde Peeling’s
Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”
Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastries - will also roam the event and will be available for pictures.

Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation resources right in our state.

“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”
According to the most recent statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about

Club, will include a halfchicken, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water. There will also be whoopie pies for sale.
The plant sale will be held on the library’s sidewalk, and the book sale will take place in the Pennington Room. Quarryville Library director Michele Lefler said, “Volunteers go around to local nurseries and ask for donations, so we never know ahead of time what we will have. It’s mostly flowers of various kinds. Sometimes there are trees, and occasionally there are vegetables. We just don’t know until the day of the event.”
The Friends of the Quarryville Library have accepted book donations and expect to have a variety of books available for sale, Lefler said.
“We’re excited to welcome everyone for a day of good food, great books, and community spirit,” Lefler said. “The chicken barbecue, plant sale, and book sale offers something for everyone, and it’s a wonderful way to support the library while having fun.” Proceeds will benefit the library’s general fund. “Considering that roughly 70% of our budget has to be raised locally and doesn’t come from municipal support, it’s very crucial to being able to continue services,” Lefler said.
An online auction will be held throughout June to help the library pay for roof repairs. “I don’t know the extent of (the work on the roof) we’re going to have to get done,” Lefler said. “We’ve had quotes in the past, and it’s been kicked down the road as long as it can be kicked down the road. We’re going to have to get some updated quotes and see what we need to have done.”
The library is soliciting donations of auction items from businesses and individuals. For more information about donating, contact Lefler by email at mlefler @quarryvillelibrary.org.
Information about the auction, including starting bids, photos, and a description of the auction items will be updated on the library’s website, www .quarryvillelibrary.org.
All of the proceeds from the auction will go to fund work on the library’s roof.
The library held a smaller
auction in February. “It worked really beautifully,” said Lefler. “I said, ‘Why not try to do a bigger one later so we have more time to seek donations?’ We’re hoping it’s going to be a big fundraiser for us because we need a new roof, or at least a partially new roof.”

what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”
