The annual A-Team Talent Show will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. The free event will feature various performances from members of the A-Team, a program operated by special needs ministry Joyfully Made Fellowship. The show, which has been held every year for more than a decade, gives the A-Team’s students an opportunity to show off their talents. In previous years, acts have included story readings, musical sing-alongs and comedy routines. “We do it because students with special needs and disabilities don’t usually have a chance to get on stage and perform,” said Tami Shaub, creator of Joyfully Made Fellowship. “What they do is not your typical show material, and it doesn’t always fit in a regular show. But we encourage students to get on stage and show the community what they can do,

even if they don’t do it perfectly.”

Shaub added that the talent show has become increasingly popular with members of the Quarryville community; many people begin asking her when the next show will occur during the annual craft bazaar at Wesley Church in December. “You never go home feeling bad. Instead, you always go home feeling encouraged because of the way the students shine joy throughout the whole show,” Shaub said. “They’re just so happy to have the opportunity to get on stage and do their thing.”

The community event has largely stayed the same over the years, and this is the first talent show that the A-Team will host since its move to a new facility last summer. The ministry formerly operated out of Wesley Church; although it will continue to host the talent show there to take advantage of its larger stage, Joyfully Made Fellowship now hosts programs at its new headquarters, located at

75 Mount Hope Road in Quarryville. At Wesley Church, Shaub and her students met in one of the building’s classrooms. The new building is entirely dedicated to the program, giving the A-Team more freedom to schedule events and coordinate activities. Additionally, the building’s handicapped-accessible amenities accommodate members of the group who use wheelchairs,

canes or walkers. “It’s been amazing to have our own space, and it’s incredible for our students. They can get anywhere in the building without needing to use steps,” Shaub said. “You can see the joy they have when they come into this space that gives them the freedom to be themselves and to call it their own.”

In addition to the talent show, Joyfully Made Fellowship offers

many programs throughout the year. In November, the ministry hosted a day of rejuvenation for mothers and grandmothers of individuals with special needs to enjoy fellowship and a break from their schedules. The group also regularly holds themed parties, such as a beach party in March. For more information, search for “A Team - Joyfully Made Fellowship” on Facebook.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH) and Safe Kids Lancaster will host the 30th annual Farm & Family Safety Day on Saturday, April 13, at Bart Fire Company, 11 Furnace Road, Quarryville. The free, kidfriendly event will begin at 8:30 a.m., and it will feature various educational activities to help families prevent farm-related injuries in the Southern End until approximately 1:30 p.m.

A complimentary morning snack and beverage will be provided for guests. Additionally, sub sandwiches will be available to purchase during the event, and all proceeds from sub sales will benefit the Bart Fire Company.

Farm & Family Safety Day will include a variety of interactive safety presentations on fire and burn safety,

Magic is mysterious. Magic is entertaining. Magic is illusion.

But do you know what else magic is? It’s a great way to raise funds.

The upcoming Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale is truly a magical event. It’s the brainchild of organizer Tait Harbaugh - known in the magic realm as Papa Tater - and it serves as a creative way to raise

monies for the nonprofit Steps to Success, which his wife, Michelle, operates.

“Magic is creating wonder, amazement,” said Harbaugh. “What you do beyond that is who you are as an entertainer. If it makes someone’s eyes grow wide, you’ve done your job. When you make people forget about life for a moment, that’s magic. I have tricks to create amazement and wonder. But for me personally, I want to

stopping an injury from bleeding, road safety and reflectivity, and other topics relevant to the farming community. Every year, LGH selects the presentation topics based on data from its trauma center and trends found in common 911 calls. The presentations primarily focus on educating children between the ages of 6 and 12; at this age, children living on farms often begin to receive more responsibilities as they become involved with the family business.

One of the main goals of Farm & Family Safety Day is to familiarize children who reside on farms with local first responders and their equipment used for emergencies. Many farms in the Southern End are operated by members of the Plain community, and many Amish and Mennonite children don’t often have an opportunity to see vehicles like ambulances. This year a new activity has been introduced to the event to give attendees an up-close look at many different types of first responder vehicles, including a police car, an ambulance, and the LGH emergency response vehicle. A helicopter landing will occur at 11 a.m. if weather permits.

“Ultimately, we want to keep children out of the hospital,” Pringle said. “It’s important to hear from experts in the field on injuries to ensure members of the local community have the best quality of life.”

After the Farm & Family Safety Day in 2021, event coordinator Lindsay Pringle was approached by a member of the Amish community. The woman thanked Pringle for bringing the event back after the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the information provided during a previous fire safety presentation helped her prevent the loss of her home a few years later. “That really resonated with me,” said Pringle. “This event truly provides folks with useful information, and ultimately it can save people’s homes and kids’ lives.” Pringle also noted that this is a multigenerational event that many community members have grown to appreciate over the years; some attendees who used to take their children to Farm & Family Safety Day now bring their grandchildren.

LGH requests that attendees register the total number of adults and children in their group prior

The old world of medicine

In the 21st century, many parts of the world have access to a level of medical treatment that was once thought to be in the realm of science fiction. The evolution of emergency treatments, dental care and various other fields of medicine has made procedures such as organ transplants and precise surgeries more accessible to the modern person. Even over-thecounter medications have advanced to make several common ailments a memory of the past, making it easy to forget that modern medicine is a relatively new concept.

To shed light on the medical techniques of a different age, Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will host an educational event at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in the Rock Ford Barn. Thomas Plott, who serves as the manager of character interpretation at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will give a presentation on the medical practices used during the Revolutionary War. During the event, Plott will interpret James Craik, the first Physician General of the United States and a personal friend of George Washington’s. Tickets are available to purchase online at https://tinyurl.com/ revwarmedicine.

While he plays the part of Craik, Plott will discuss the general approach to medical care used in the 18th century, including the types of care that soldiers received during the American Revolution and common medical instruments. Plott will also share information about Craik’s role as physician general, which served as the

precursor to the position of surgeon general. Plott will don a period-accurate costume and an accent to give his presentation as the Scottish doctor.

“The evolution of medicine took a lot of time, and the real changes started to be made during the time of the Revolutionary War,” Plott said. “People were starting to realize the body is not based on humors, which was a huge part of medicine all the way back to ancient Greek and Roman times.” Previously, medical practitioners believed that four bodily fluids known as humors were responsible for mood and physical health. Many ailments were attributed to an imbalance of the humors, and techniques such as bloodletting were used in an attempt to cure diseases and injuries.

“In the 18th century, they started to realize blood circulates through the body, and doctors began to view the heart as a pump,” Plott added.

Plott said the presentation will be more of an interactive performance than a lecture, and it will include opportunities for audience members to participate in activities and ask questions. Plott will also share information on medical instruments used at the time. “A lot of people guess what they’re used for, and a lot of times their ideas are more barbaric than reality,” said Plott. “Amazingly, many of these instruments are still used today.”

Historic Rock Ford will open a focused exhibit on death and mourning in the 18th and 19th centuries on Tuesday, April 2. For more information, visit www.historicrock ford.org.

Young musicians to present recital

A spring recital will be presented by members of the Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA), a local organization of young classically trained musicians. The event will take place on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village.

WYPA is a student organization sponsored by the Musical Art Society that meets once each month, giving students performance experience in preparation for recitals, competitions, auditions, and other music opportunities. The group presents public programs in April, December, and June. The counselors are Margaret Marsch, Dora Zlatkin, John Zielinski, Chris Prestia, and Sean Skinner. This year’s junior counselor is Candace Mbugua.

On April 14, members will present piano, violin, flute, and vocal works, including piano concertos by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Other selections will include a Beethoven sonata, a flute

concerto by Devienne, a Puccini opera piece, a fiddle piece, and Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz” on the piano.

The concert is free and open to the public, and the venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.

Steps to Success

make people laugh.”

The 10th edition of the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale, billed as a micro magic convention, will be presented on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. About 40 magicians from Lancaster County and beyond will be there plying their trade, selling and trading their wares and captivating curious onlookers.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Concessions will be available, and all proceeds from their sale will benefit Steps to Success, which has served the community for 30 years through early child care and education.

from pg 1

“I want people to come out and have a good time and explore magic,” said Harbaugh. “The goal is to support Steps to Success. Michelle saw this need in the community and put together four after-school programs in Conestoga Valley. Steps has grown immensely since COVID, and every time (it has), it’s been to help someone out. She tries to look out for the community. I really care about Steps, and I really care about the magic community.”

Steps to Success is hoping to raise $700 through the event. In addition to the concessions, the nonprofit will accept direct donations and participating magicians donate a nominal fee to operate their table stations.

Last year, 200 magic enthusiasts attended. “I’m a very late bloomer, and I was in my 30s when I started getting into magic,” said Harbaugh. “At one

point Michelle said, ‘Hey, that’s something you could do for the kids.’ The little lovelies loved it so much that I brought more. I realized I love making people laugh. That’s when I got serious about magic.”

Those who attend the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale can expect to be treated to card tricks, puppets, clowns, face painting, vintage and rare magic, sleight of hand, the unexplained, and maybe even a bed of nails.

“It’s a room full of magic. It’s a room full of magicians,” said Harbaugh. “There’s definitely excitement in the air. If you ask the magicians to see a trick, they’re off. They love to perform. We really like seeing young people have an interest. Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”

For Harbaugh, magic has sort of become an accelerant for his journey’s second act.

“I’m a comedy magician,” said Harbaugh. “I’m trying to get into comedy. I’m trying stand-up. All of my shows end up being comedy shows. I just love laughter.”

Workshop to focus on native plants

Penn State Extension will host a Choose Native Mini-Workshop live webinar on Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. The mini workshop will focus on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens.

Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to natural lands and waterways. Once established, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space, light, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity

of plants available for food sources, habitat, and shelter. The workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs.

This mini-workshop is hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services. The event is offered at no charge through funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission.

Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ ChooseNativeMiniWork shop. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

Senior citizens to celebrate birthdays

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold a birthday party for all the group’s members after its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 17, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. The event will not only celebrate the birthdays of all the group’s members, but will also mark the organization’s 58th anniversary, occurring

on Saturday, April 20. The nonprofit organization was chartered in 1966 for the recreation and benefit of area residents age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips. For more information, call Jill at 717-239-1530.

PennDOT seeks feedback on winter services

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking the public’s feedback on winter services through an online survey. The survey will be available through Wednesday, April 17, at https:// tinyurl.com/2024Winter ServicesSurvey. It should take about five minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous.

The 16-question survey asks respondents about their timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities, and how they rate

PennDOT’s winter services. Respondents are also asked how they receive PennDOT roadway information and whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services. During the winter, www.511PA.com offers traffic and incident information as well as PennDOT plow-truck locations, winter roadway conditions, and other services.

As construction season begins, information on projects occurring or being bid on this year is viewable at www.projects.penn dot.gov.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) announced that its mobile veterans outreach vans are available throughout the state to assist veterans in obtaining information and initiating benefit claim paperwork through the assistance of DMVA accredited veteran service officers.

The DMVA brings essential services directly to veterans and can be booked online for community events such as fairs and festivals. The vans offer no-cost, on-site assistance with veterans benefits.

The DMVA also staffs outreach teams throughout Pennsylvania communities that build relationships with veteran advocates and connect veterans in need of specific services with those advocates.

Over the past year, outreach efforts supported 190 events - including 35 by scheduling an outreach

van - with nearly 4,000 veteran interactions. These teams also coordinate events with county directors of Veterans Affairs, veteran service organizations, and local and state officials to maximize awareness and attendance.

A wide range of federal, state, and county benefits are available to qualified veterans and their families. These benefits include service-connected disability compensation, pensions, Veterans Affairs health care benefits, burial benefits, education benefits, vocational rehabilitation, active service bonuses, and veterans homes long-term care.

For more details on how to request a van for a community event, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/ Veterans/Miscellaneous/ Pages/MobileVeterans OutreachVans.aspx.

Pledge the Pink launches shoe drive fundraiser

Pledge the Pink will conduct a shoe drive fundraiser until Tuesday, May 14, to raise funds to fight breast cancer. Funds2Orgs will issue a check based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn used and new shoes collected by Pledge the Pink. Shoes will be collected at Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster; Bespoke Brewing, 226 Gap Road, Ronks; Uller’s Outdoor, 1031 Haines Road, York; Alltypes Insurance, 35 E. State St., Quarryville; Formula Fitness, 2495 E. Lincoln Highway, Lancaster; Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg; and Sneaker Den, 3822 W. Lincoln Highway, Downingtown. All sizes and styles of shoes for men, women, and children will be accepted.

All donated shoes will be redistributed through the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain, and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunities and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe, and house the entrepreneurs’ families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. Additional information about Funds2Orgs is available at https://funds 2orgs.com.

At open house, Aviation Venture Crew will spread its wings

Maybe it was a way to conquer a new frontier. Maybe it was the desire to defy gravity. Maybe it was a response to a need for faster transportation.

But humans have always maintained a certain healthy fascination with flight. Not only is the Aviation Venture Crew continuing to explore aspects of flight, but it’s also seeking to promote them.

“It’s like a freedom thing,” said Doug Eadline, a co-adviser of the Aviation Venture Crew, as well as a licensed pilot and a ground maintenance supervisor at Chester County Airport. “When you’re up in the air, you feel like you can do anything and go anywhere.”

In an attempt to further its cause and attract new

members, the Aviation Venture Crew will conduct an open house and drop-in on Saturday, April 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive, Smoketown. The event will serve as an opportunity to meet current members, hear about some of the activities that the Aviation Venture Crew engages in, and generally learn what the crew is all about.

There will be an airplane to explore, as well as a flight simulator.

The open house is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

“The atmosphere should be pretty light,” said Eadline. “We’re trying to attract new youth to the organization. We’re kind of unique to Lancaster County. A

Check out

Venture Crew that’s specifically focused on aviation is pretty rare. We’re the only one in the county.”

Chartered by New Holland American Legion Post 662, the Aviation Venture Crew meets every other Sunday in Smoketown Airport’s community room. The next meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 6 p.m.

“We take a wide view of aviation, including planes and flight,” said co-adviser Beth Katz. “But we also consider airport operations, weather, astronomy, navigation and trip planning. We have visited the Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport, but we have also visited Coatesville Airport and Lancaster Airport to see their operations and some of the planes housed there.”

The Aviation Venture Crew was founded in 2012 and currently has five members, who are males and females ages 14 to 21 from Manheim, Lancaster city and Leola. More are always welcome.

“Most come from a Scouting background,” said

Eadline, a New Holland resident. “We explore anything and everything related to aviation. For most of our members, it’s probably a hobby, but it could blossom into a career. If these kids are intent on going beyond Venture Crew, they can learn to fly.”

“When I started (flying), it was the excitement of being free. Now it’s a job. To me, it’s still neat to see the (planes) taking off,” said Eadline.

Pine Ridge Boys Quartet to perform

Program

to highlight broad-winged hawks

A freewill offering will be received. The event is open to the public. For more information, call the church at 717-548-3217.

Wakefield Bible Church, 2310 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, will host the Pine Ridge Boys Quartet on Sunday, April 14. The group will sing at the morning service, which will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and present a full concert at 6 p.m.

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor’s Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Laurie Goodrich from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will present “Chasing Broad-winged Hawks from Canada to Colombia: Ecology of a Long-Distance Migrant.” Goodrich will share new discoveries about broad-winged hawks, a secretive forest raptor. In 2014, migration monitoring data

showed some populations of broad-winged hawks are declining in eastern North America. Hawk Mountain launched a new study to understand the full-life cycle ecology and migration of this species.

Scientists have tracked broad-wings in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Canada to better understand migration patterns, threats and survival; scientists also studied the birds’ nesting ecology in three states.

Goodrich serves as the Sarkis Acopian Director of Conservation Science at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. She has worked in nearly every aspect of conservation at Hawk Mountain, from overseeing its long-term migration counts to directing its education program and developing the first education plan to conducting scientific research and publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed papers. Locally, she launched collaborative research projects focused on Pennsylvania farmland raptors and broad-winged hawks, and globally, she co-founded the million-raptor conservation site at the River of Raptors in Veracruz, Mexico. Working with colleagues at the Hawk Migration Association of North America, HawkWatch International, and Bird Studies Canada, she helped develop the award-winning Raptor Population Index Project and contributed heavily to the State of North America’s Birds of Prey, a comprehensive analysis of raptor populations across the continent. Combined, she has coordinated the work of dozens of volunteers, trainees, and graduate students, and interacted with countless citizen scientists. The program is free and open to the public. To learn more, call 717-8563851 or 717-725-2717.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will hold a meeting to discuss local air quality as well as the club’s new initiative that employs PurpleAir sensors, managed by volunteers from various Lancaster County locations, to monitor the county’s air quality. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April

17, in the Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. It is open to the public.

During the session, the volunteers who manage monitors will have an opportunity to meet each other, talk about their findings, and discuss mutual concerns and the intricacies

Program to focus on the Huichol people

The Circle Legacy Center will present a Second Friday program, “The Gifts of an Unbroken Tradition,” on April 12 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster.

Randy Whitlock and Linda Felch will speak about the Huichol people of Mexico. When the conquistadors were active, many Huichol people withdrew to the high mesas of the Sierra Madre mountains, where they continued their culture and ancient wisdom tradition. They maintain their connection to the world through a yearly ceremonial cycle, and they continue to pilgrimage to sacred places.

Whitlock and Felch spent years of apprenticeship, pilgrimage, and training with the Huichol people before settling in York County. At

the program, they will share about their yearly journey to the rugged, mountainous homelands of the Huichol and about a lifestyle of ceremony, subsistence, and devotion to the cycles of the natural world.

They will offer artworks and crafts made by the Huichol for sale. This fair trade project is designed to support the Huichol, allowing them to stay in their villages and maintain their traditions.

Participants are asked to bring a food item to share and their own tableware. Parking is available across the street from the church, and attendees should enter through the glass doors from Concord Street.

For more information, call Circle Legacy Center executive director Victoria Valentine at 717-823-2079.

of the sensors. Sierra Club - Lancaster Group leaders who are heading up the project will guide the discussions and describe how the air monitor sensors work for those unfamiliar with them. One of the sensors will be on display. Possible next steps to address Lancaster’s air quality also may be discussed.

PurpleAir is a crowdfunded, hyperlocal air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as

regulatory sensors, those used by PurpleAir can be a supplement to regional air monitors. Through an ongoing application process, the Lancaster Group distributes sensors to volunteers interested in hosting them.

Admission is free. Refreshments will be available. For more details, email Allison Zechman at afzechman@ gmail.com or Jane Druce at janedruce@gmail.com.
