First responders’ appreciation night will return to Southern End

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 N. Little Britain Road, Quarryville, will host its annual Southern End Love event on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will include live music, activities for children and interactive demonstrations from local emergency service personnel.

Tours of fire engines and rescue demonstrations will be provided by members of the Robert Fulton Fire Company and the Quarryville Fire Company throughout the day. EMTs from the Wakefield EMS will offer CPR demonstrations and provide attendees with information on the various types of equipment that they use when answering calls.

Food will be available to purchase from On The Roll food truck, and local music duo Max and Denise

will perform acoustic songs from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will also include multiple prize drawings, and the prize winners will be announced at 4 p.m.

Breakfast serves Lancaster County veterans

For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.

The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States veterans have

always come up with ways to get the job done.

“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”

LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast club had met at a restaurant in

Approximately 20 local vendors, artisans and small businesses will sell their wares inside the venue. Each vendor pays a fee to reserve a space, the proceeds of which

Britain Hill will donate to first responders. This year, the participating emergency service organizations will compete in a chili cook-off; attendees will have an

opportunity to purchase a ticket that includes one cup of chili from each group. Guests who purchase a ticket may vote for their favorite contestant, and the organization

to offer Lancaster County residents an opportunity to reap the rewards of outdoor exercise while simultaneously bringing the community closer together.

“You can’t replace getting together with people and being outdoors,” Samantha said. “Fresh air has so many benefits: boosting energy and mood, decreasing stress and getting Vitamin D from the sun.”

Lancaster Moves will launch its first series of events on Saturday, April 6, at Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St. The kickoff will begin at 9 a.m., and it will include an hour of cardio exercises and bodyweight workouts designed to suit participants of all fitness levels. Samantha and Andrew’s decision to create Lancaster Moves was partially influenced by the couple’s shared passion for working out. Samantha works full time as a nurse, and Andrew’s career is in the accounting world; in their free time, the husband and wife participate in fitness programs at their local gym. Since their gym primarily offers indoor activities, Samantha and Andrew often workout in their own backyard, and they started to consider ways they could establish a consistent program for the whole community.

In addition to their active lifestyle, Samantha and Andrew both have educational backgrounds in fitness; Samantha has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology, and Andrew studied sports management in college. Andrew also has several years of experience as both an athlete and a coach.

Samantha and Andrew were also inspired to create Lancaster Moves as a way to honor Andrew’s late grandfather, Charles Gerberich Sr. Charles joined the Lebanon YMCA through its scholarship program in 1937, and he actively volunteered to teach afterschool programs there for many years. Charles also frequently covered membership fees for children whose families could not afford them. Samantha and Andrew plan to donate 10% of all profits from future Lancaster Moves programs to YMCA youth scholarship funds. “Andrew has this vision to give

Debbie Helm, the owner of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, was inspired to create the Southern End Love event after two encounters she had with local first responders. About four years ago, emergency personnel were called to the scene of an accident on Little Britain Road, near the vineyard. Helm witnessed EMTs, firefighters and police officers arrive at the scene, and she recalled being struck by the courage of the men and women who responded to the tragic accident. Soon after, Helm’s husband was involved in

another accident, and Helm said she was impressed by the swift response from local first responders. Helm organized Southern End Love to show her appreciation for the local emergency personnel who make southern Lancaster County a safer place.

In addition to creating the appreciation night, Helm decided to develop a new wine called Southern End Love. For each bottle that is purchased, Britain Hill donates $1 each to four local emergency service organizations: the Robert Fulton Fire Company, Quarryville Fire Company, Wakefield EMS and the Quarryville Police Foundation. “The main idea is still to show our appreciation and to use our platform as a venue to not only help raise funds for them, but for people to come meet those who serve us every day,” Helm said. “The more time they spend trying to raise money, the less time they have to do what we need them to do.”

In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at 6:45 a.m. on April 20, May 18 and June 15 all at the former Revere Tavern, 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.

“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”

A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.

“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”

Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.

“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”

On Monday, April 15, the venue will be Shenk’s Ferry in Conestoga. A wildflower-centered birding walk will commence at 7 a.m. For more information, contact Nina and Warren Wolf at 717-284-2663 or wolfers@aol.com.

An outing at Safe Harbor and Chestnut Grove Natural Area will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 8 a.m. The focus will be on different habitats, and birds the group will look for include yellow-throated warbler, palm warbler, white-eyed vireo, and fox sparrow. Contact Carl Groff at 717-471-9969 or fledge19@verizon.net for more details.

On Saturday, April 27, a group will view the Octoraro Reservoir from several vantage points, including spots on Blue Gill Road and Liberty Lane. Starting at 7 a.m., attendees will look for wetland birds and migrants. For more information, contact Larry Bernhardt at 717-314-1461 or sjbern hardt@verizon.net.

According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry.

“It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with likeminded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”

Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.

Art teachers in each school district select work from their students to enter in the contest every year. Once the submissions are judged, artists who have been chosen for the exhibit are contacted directly to drop off their work. “With over 425 works juried into the exhibition from 19 school districts from across the county, we are grateful to the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design for hosting the exhibition this year, and for providing this exceptional opportunity for these young artists to be honored and thrilled to see their work in the spotlight at these prestigious art venues,” said Rakers.

Lancaster County Young Artists was initially run by multiple

volunteers. In recent years, the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Foundation took over the management of the annual contest. Artwork from an additional seven school districts will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in Lancaster city as part of the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibit.
