Thissummer, Solanco High School senior Abigail Mosteller will receive a Gold Award, the highest award that can be earned by a Girl Scout. In June, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) will present the award to Mosteller and other Scouts from across the state who have met various requirements, including completing a community service project. Mosteller is a member of Troop 71152, which
will also hold a local award ceremony for her friends and family at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church.
Mosteller started her project last fall with a six-week program at Bart-Colerain Elementary School to help students learn Spanish. During the program, Mosteller took students outside and helped them practice their vocabulary and learn the Spanish words for things on the playground.
Mosteller brought the program to Clermont Elementary at the begin-
ning of the spring semester. Each week, students focused on a specific topic that is relevant to their age group. The winter weather prevented Mosteller from taking her group of students outside, so she printed pictures of things that students would find on the playground and placed them around the school library. Mosteller gave the students a word in Spanish and asked them to locate the corresponding image for in the library.
Each week of the program covered a specific topic that related to the students’ school day. Mosteller also incorporated educational games, booklets and activities with her program to get the kids motivated to learn. “I loved seeing how exciting the kids were to learn a new language,” Mosteller said. “We received a lot of positive feedback from both parents and teachers about the program.”
Mosteller is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and was first inspired to create her program while helping Spanishspeaking students with their homework. She noticed that many of the students had difficulty relating to their peers and decided to use her service project as an opportunity to bridge the gap between English- and Spanishspeaking students. “It clicked for me that I could do a project to help younger kids learn a new language and connect with each other,” Mosteller said.
To earn a Gold Award for the project, Mosteller needed to make her program sustainable. She created a lesson plan, templates and resources so that after she graduates, someone else can continue the program.
Mosteller has been a member of Girl Scouts for 13 years and she knew early on that she wanted to achieve the Gold Award. “It feels good to reach this goal, but I’m sad that it’s ending,” Mosteller said. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone, and I’m proud of all that I’ve accomplished through the program.”
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Promise Players theater group will present “High Cotton” for its spring production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, March 17 through 19, and Thursday to Sunday, March 23 through 26. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will
have a 2:30p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend. Tickets are able to be purchased in advance but will be sold at the door on a first-come-first-served basis if they are still available. Admission for attendees 12 years old or younger may be paid with a donation of a canned good, which the Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank. Child care will be available for young children during the show. To reserve a ticket, visit https://tiny url.com/highcottonshow.
“High Cotton” takes place in the year 1929, just before the crash of the stock market. The play follows the lives of a wealthy mill owner and his workers and explores the disparity between the upper and lower classes. The story highlights the dynamics between the “haves” and the “have-nots” in a small town, while its characters wrestle with their pride and prejudices toward one another. The production is accompanied by the lively and jazzy music that is characteristic of the Roaring ’20s.

Several years ago, two local families donated a large amount of money to The Salvation Army. The organization decided to use the donation to create The Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf Scholarship, which will benefit a select group of applicants from schools across the county.
The scholarship was created to assist students of low- to moderateincome households to receive a higher education, whether through earning a college degree or earning a trade. In order to be eligible to
receive the scholarship, students must be Lancaster County residents, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and be graduating seniors, among other requirements. Each student must submit a high school transcript, an academic recommendation letter, a community service-related recommendation letter and a one-page essay describing his or her career goals. For more information, visit www.salvationarmylancaster.org or contact 717-397-7565. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, March 20.

Once students submit their applications and the necessary documents, The Salvation Army will review them and schedule an interview with the students who qualify at its location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the interview, each student will describe his or her
vision and career plan and detail what school and major he or she has in mind. The Salvation Army will provide assistance beyond the scholarship itself by helping the students to locate additional resources that will help with secondary education.
“We believe in education and the next generation,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager at The Salvation Army. “Going to college isn’t an easy decision to make and it’s not cheap. We believe that once students finish school and begin working, they will be in a position to give back to their communities.”
In previous years, The Salvation Army offered small scholarships to local students. The organization recently welcomed aboard many new officers who have decided to make a more concerted effort to support students in the county. The Salvation Army’s goal is to continue to award the scholarship to 15 students in Lancaster County each year.
The Salvation Army offers various other programs to Lancaster County residents throughout the year. On Fridays, the organization distributes food to over 100 local families, providing them with a box of essentials such as bread, soup, sandwiches, rice and breakfast items. The Salvation Army also provides financial assistance to families that need help paying for rent and utilities. Through the nonprofit’s Pathway of Hope program, families can receive financial and life coaching resources through lessons that cover topics such as budgeting, applying to jobs and creating resumes.
“We hope that one day, the people who we help will give back to the community when they can by assisting those in need,” Boules said.

“There are a lot of factors that go into selecting a show, but we always look for a show that has a good, strong message,” said Dorothy Smith, the director of the play. “To me, the message is redemption. There’s hope for everybody.”
Smith has been involved with the Promise Players’ productions for nearly 10 years, but this is the first play that she is directing for the group. While preparing for the show, she noted that she made an effort to allow each actor to develop his or her character individually. Although Smith provided assistance by guiding the actors in their roles, she wanted to give them an opportunity to influence their roles with their unique personalities and thoughts.
Each of the Promise Players’ productions benefits a local nonprofit organization, which is often related to the message of the show. This year, the theater group will donate the funds raised by the play to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, in addition to donations of canned goods. “The show focuses on the ‘haves’ and the ‘havenots,’ so we thought it would be fitting to support a local organization that helps people who are struggling financially,” Smith said.
The next Row House Forum, “St. Patrick’s Surprising Mission and Enduring Legacy” with Graham Dennis, will take place on Friday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event will feature the lecture, refreshments, and an opportunity for questions at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.
The program will examine Patrick’s life and the tradition of Celtic Christianity that grew up after him.
Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. Row House members plus a guest may attend for free with a reservation. For more information or to reserve seats, visit www.therowhouse.org.
Jordan Smith, Season 9 winner of NBC’s “The Voice,” will visit Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, for a concert on Thursday, March 23. Smith will bring his voice to the Good Shepherd Chapel stage at 7 p.m.

work titled “Be Still and Know.” Some of Smith’s other songs include “Stand in the Light,” “Great You Are,” “Only Love,” “Sparrow,” “Halo,” and “Love Lives On.” He is the highest-selling artist to ever emerge from NBC’s Emmy-winning series.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarm landtrust.org.
Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such
products poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.
Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others.
The Michael P. McMahon Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.
Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.
Added Joanne, “Michael’s life
was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”
Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”
When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.
“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
208 +/- ACRE SOUTHERN LANCASTER CO. FARM
7 BR DOUBLE FARMHOUSE - 2 BR TENANT HOUSE MAIN BARN w/FEED LOT & MANURE PIT - (3) SILOS FARM EQUIPMENT - TOOLS - HOUSEHOLDS
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at
Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.
The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be

Advoz, Lancaster’s mediation and restorative justice center, will offer a new opportunity for volunteers to help build healthier and more equitable communities by facilitating restorative justice dialogue with youths who commit crimes and those they may have impacted. Restorative justice is a practice that enables those affected by crime or conflict to be directly involved in resolving the issues they face, while also providing a safe and supportive space for individuals to communicate, stay accountable, and rebuild relationships. A volunteer facilitator is responsible for facilitating conversations with both parties individually and between those affected by the crime.
Advoz, 53 N. Duke St., Lancaster, will host an introductory training in Conflict Communication & Culture on Friday, March 31. The specialized training sessions in Restorative Facilitation will take place via Zoom from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 4 to 18, and in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22.
Volunteer candidates can use the code COM-DISC to register for a discount. CEUs and CLEs are available to those taking the training professionally. To register and find out more about being a restorative facilitator, visit https://advoz.org /volunteer. To learn more, contact Krista Rittenhouse at krista@advoz.org or 717397-2404. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 17.
Clown classes for individuals wishing to become Make-A-Wish clowns will be offered on Saturdays, March 25, April 8, April 22 and May 6. Groups of families, co-workers, church members, and others are welcome. There is no charge for the class, but there will be a cost for the makeup kits.
To express interest, email nold138@gmail.com or call 717-587-9841.
