Solid Rock posts auction fundraiser
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDSolid Rock Youth Ministries will host a benefit auction and meal on Friday, March 24, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. The funds raised from the event will support the organization’s many after-school programs, which are all held free of charge throughout the year. To register for the auction, visit www.solidrock quarryville.com/auction-2023.
A silent auction will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., and a live auction will begin at 7:10 p.m. The items in the auction have all been donated by members of the community and local businesses, and they will include office furniture, jewelry, gift baskets, houseware, tools, quilts and baked goods. “We’re so grateful to the community and local businesses for supporting us and believing in our mission,” said Kris Kauffman, organizer for the event. At 6 p.m., attendees will have an opportunity to purchase a meal at
the event which will consist of ham, potatoes, green beans, applesauce and a whoopie pie.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Solid Rock hosted a meal and auction fundraiser every year in the fall. In 2020, Solid Rock chose to hold the fundraiser online, but the organization brought the auction back to Wesley Church last year and chose to move its date to the spring. “Everyone was excited to be back together again,” Kauffman said. “My favorite thing was seeing the fun, fellowship and comradery that goes along with bidding with friends and neighbors.”
Solid Rock Youth Ministries seeks to spread the Gospel through creating authentic bonds between children and by providing families with a foundation in Christ.
Throughout the school year, the organization provides after-school programs for kids from kindergarten to high school. These programs are held at Solid Rock’s main location in Quarryville, as

well as several local schools. During its programs for younger kids, Solid Rock provides students with a snack, a group game and a Bible lesson. Afterward, students participate in a group activity or game to have fun together and get to know each other. For Solid Rock’s middle school program, students come together to experience community and mentorship in a Christ-centered environment. This program also features group games, a Bible lesson and a small group meeting with Christian adults and peers.
In the high school program, Solid Rock looks to connect with students in their current stage of life and help them to foster a relationship with Christ. Once a month, the organization hosts an event specifically for high school students such as glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, movie night, miniature golf and corn maze activities.

Ladies Lenten Tea posted
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMiddle Octorara Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host its annual Ladies Lenten Tea on Saturday, March 11. The event will kick off with live music from singer and songwriter Bruce Fite at 2 p.m., followed by food and beverages in the church’s social hall. There is no fee to attend, but donations will be accepted by the church.

Fite is a music teacher and performs songs written for a wide range of audiences. His songs employ upbeat melodies and comical but educational lyrics, such as his single “Don’t Put Your Cat in the

Washing Machine.” Each year, the Ladies Lenten Tea features a different performer for its live entertainment. “(Fite) is a lot of fun. He provides a lighthearted, fun show,” said Boni Henry, organizer of the event. After the performance, attendees will gather to share tea, coffee, fruit, cheese, crackers and small sandwiches. Henry noted that those attending often bring friends and socialize during the luncheon, and women are welcome to attend by themselves or as a group.
Middle Octorara Church first began hosting the Ladies Lenten Tea in 2014 and held the event every year until 2020, when it was

placed on a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tradition was started by former pastor Douglas Hileman and his wife, Kristine, after Kristine helped to organize a similar community activity at another church. The Ladies Lenten Tea was immediately well received by the congregation, with over 80 women attending in the past. This is the first year that Middle Octorara Church has hosted the event since 2019.
“I love seeing everyone enjoy the food and fellowship the most,” Henry said. “March is such a wintery month, and it can be bleak; ladies are looking for something to do. It’s a nice way to get together with your friends and have a fun day.” The reg-
istration deadline for the Ladies Lenten Tea is Saturday, March 4. To register, email mopc_sec@comcast.net or call 717-786-3402.

The Ladies Lenten Tea is one of several events coordinated by Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW), a women’s group that consists of members from the congregation. Every other month, the group hosts a sub and soup sale to raise funds for community events as well as local ministries. MOPW uses its funds to support organizations such as Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and its programs to provide residents of the Southern End with food and furnace fuel during the winter. Every February, members of MOPW also knit and crochet quilts, which they donate to the Gap Veterans of Foreign Wars. The quilts are then given to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Coatesville. “We try to give what we can with the money that we make,” Henry said.

Church concert frompg 1

This is the first year that Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren will host a concert fundraiser. The church primarily hosts dinners and lunches for members of the congregation, but it decided to begin hosting more events that engage with the surrounding community. “We’re trying something different and thinking outside the box to connect with people beyond the church,” said Bobbie Davis, organizer for the event. To purchase tickets for the concert, visit https:// mechanic-grove-youth -roots.square.site/.
The proceeds for the concert will support two trips that Mechanic Grove’s youth groups will take this summer. The church’s senior high youth group will travel to Boston on a week long mission trip to assist with repair and maintenance projects in the city and its surrounding area. This is the first year that the youth group will take a mission trip since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and it

hopes to continue taking service trips in the years to follow. This summer, the junior high youth group will attend a conference held at Juniata College where other youth groups gather to worship together.

The youth groups meet on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 5 p.m., as well as one Sunday a month for a game or activity.

During the Wednesday meetings, which the church calls Roots, students gather in a worship setting to participate in a Bible study. “We’re trying to give kids a foundation in the Bible and help them to find their roots in the faith,” Davis said. “Having a foundation helps them when they grow up and become stronger adults.” Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren also provides a community meal at 5:45 p.m. on the nights Roots is held. The meal is open to the public and provided by donation.

Solanco senior Jared Fulton secured his first District Three 3A Section 2 title on Saturday, February 18 and advanced to the PIAA District Three/Southcentral Regional championships at Spring Grove High School.

Fulton dominated the
Plastino and Rutt advance to Regionals
133-pound weight class, pinning his way to the finals. He opened with a 2:47 fall over Sullivan Weader (Hershey) in the quarterfinals and then pushed out to a 5-0 lead over Hempfield’s Zy McCain-Murray before collecting a fall in 3:26. In the finals, Fulton scored a first period takedown, a second period rever-
sal and scored three nearfall points to top Central Dauphin’s Dallas Schorr for the gold.
In each of the past two years, Fulton has faced eventual state finalists in the championships.
“Jared wrestled a smart and sound tournament,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “The

Hempfield kid is a talented wrestler and he was looking for a big move. Jared just stayed in control and took advantage of his opportunities.”
Fulton, who wrestled at 139 all season, elected to move to 133 for the post-season. “He felt he might have a better chance of placing,” said Mendez. “Many wrestlers move weight classes in the post-season. He’s been very responsible in the move and

has done things correctly. He wasn’t moving away from anyone.”

Fulton currently sits with 99 victories and looks to join Solanco’s 100 career wins club in the near future.
Joining Fulton at Regionals will be Blaine Plastino and Caden Rutt who also earned top four finishes.
Plastino finished second at 172, losing a 14-1 major decision to McCaskey’s Kevin
Olavarria, who won two sectional crowns while competing for Manheim Township.
The Solanco senior held a 4-2 lead over Milton Hershey’s Marcus Rodriguez before scoring a quarterfinals fall in 1:46. He used that momentum to get past Lampeter-Strasburg’s Jaiden Newton 6-1 in the semis. After a scoreless first period, Plastino scored three nearfall points in the second and never looked back.

“Blaine came in as the third seed,” noted Mendez. “He lost twice before to that L-S kid so it was nice to see him avenge those losses and advance. He wrestled smart.

“As for Olavarria,” said Mendez. “He is very talented and truthfully is way ahead of the weight class.”

Plastino currently holds a 28-10 record.

Rutt, wrestling at 107, punched his ticket to his first regional tournament with a fourth place finish. He got off to a strong start, posting a 13-0 major decision over McCaskey’s Journie Rodriguez in the quarterfinals but was knocked to the consolations when he faced eventual second place finisher Tyler Detwiler in the
semis. Detwiler pushed out to a 7-4 lead before turning Rutt for the fall (4:30).
Rutt shook off the loss and rebounded with a dominating 14-0 shutout over Manheim Central’ Blake Fasnacht. With a chance to finish third, Rutt faced a familiar foe in Penn Manor’s Riley Evans. Rutt, who pinned Evans in dual meet action, was pinned in 2:37, settling for fourth.
“Caden and Riley have been back-and-forth this year,” noted Mendez. “They did the same thing last year. Detwiler was the No. 2 seed. That was a 6-5 match before Caden got pinned. He was a little up and down this tournament but he did what he needed to do to qualify.”
Also placing but failing to

advance was Ben Williams in sixth place.
The junior, wrestling at 145, lost his opening bout but fought back through the consolations to place. He earned an 8-3 decision over Donegal’s Landen Baughman and then beat Central’s AJ Hondru 9-4 before suffering an 11-3 loss to eventual third place finisher Bryn Hess (Warwick) in the consolation semis.
“Ben is just a junior so this was a good learning experience for him and will help him in moving forward next season,” Mendez said.
Also competing for the Mules was sophomore Braedon Bickford (114), senior Andrew Smith (139), who finished at 22-15, and senior Justin McCauley.

LEFEVER & HART PUBLIC AUCTIONS
Not easily broken
BY ANN MEAD ASHDayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”
“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.
The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.
Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first

community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God. “In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy. “As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.
Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.

Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary.
Grandparents group to meet
The Alienated Grandparents Anonymous (AGA) support group will meet on Sunday, March 5, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Park City Community Room, located on the first floor near the entrance to the Park City Center offices in the Kohl’s wing, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. AGA provides information and support to grandparents who have been cut off from access to their grandchildren. For more information, email aga.lancaster@gmail.com.

“When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.
“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers.
“The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”
Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.
Tickets to the event may be purchased at www.Dayspring Christian.com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717-285-2000, ext. 211.
