Solanco Thespians To Stage “Shrek The Musical”

His role in the spring musical has been a dream come true for Solanco High School senior Gabe Williams.

“I have been in every show since I was a freshman,” Gabe remarked. “This is my first year to be the lead. I’m really excited to go out with a bang.”

Gabe will play the title role when the high school performs “Shrek the Musical” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 7, 8, and 9. The Broadway show is presented through Music Theatre International and will be staged in the auditorium at the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville.

Playing Shrek’s love interest,

Fiona, is senior Gabby Griffonetti.

Shrek’s best friend, Donkey, is portrayed by freshman AJ Jackson.

Junior Sophia Steinhauer has been cast as Dragon, Fiona’s one-time captor and later Donkey’s significant other.

“It’s a fun character,” Sophia said of Dragon. “She’s really sassy, which I play well.”

Similarly, AJ has readily embraced his character. “I relate to Donkey a lot. I don’t have to play Donkey; I just talk,” AJ commented. Playing a key role as a freshman takes courage, he noted. “I’m definitely nervous.

There are a lot of lines,” AJ added.

Church Will Hold Lenten Tea A Lenten Tea will take place on Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The featured artist will be singer-songwriter Frances Drost.

Drost is a concert artist and inspirational speaker who began her own company as a way to encourage people on their journey through life. She aims to weave real-life experiences and messages throughout her music. She has served a total of more than 16 years on staff as the director of worship at various churches, and she has shared the stage with Kay Arthur, Dee Brestin, Ruth Graham, Margaret Feinberg, Bonnie Keen, and Ellie Lofaro. She has also been featured as a guest on the Chris Fabry Live Radio Show.

players have told me they’re coming to see it.”

“People will want to come to this,” Gabby added. “Solanco has never done a show this modern and exciting.”

Because the show is fairly new, the production rights are more expensive, and the costumes and sets are highly detailed, which also has raised the budget. Cast members have sold chicken pies to help to offset the cost.

“We’re putting a lot of time and effort into this (production),” Gabe pointed out.

Additionally, folks may attend a spaghetti dinner in the high school cafeteria from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 9. The meal will be provided by a local restaurant, and the cost of admission will benefit the 2019 post prom budget, with a portion of the proceeds being shared with the “Shrek” production. Post prom committee co-chair Christine Schneider noted that post prom needs to raise $11,000 in the next dozen weeks in order to complete the committee’s vision for the event.

“We thought they’d be a good match, as they’re part of two of the most influential institutions that affect American lives: the media and government,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “They’ll answer questions like ‘ What is God doing there (in those institutions)?’ and ‘ What are the challenges?’”

Myers asserted that Bream and Gowdy have “strong Christian testimonies.” Attendees will be invited to submit questions for a question-and-answer session that will take place after the speakers’ presentations.

Myers will serve as the facilitator, and Dayspring alumni Carley Evangelista Bilindabagabo, Class of 2009, and Matthew Valverde, Class of 2012, will assist in the dialogue.

“It’s important to show what Dayspring is about,” said Lisa Becker, the school’s marketing director. “Including alumni will show how they have learned to think and reason.”

“My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.”

The doors to the venue will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m. Two sets of tickets are available for purchase.

Myers noted that there will be an opportunity for attendees to invest in the future of Dayspring at the event, but the Remember America Speaker Series is not primarily a fundraiser.

“It’s an extension of our mission,” Myers explained. “It’s an opportunity for us to speak into the community about the importance of the biblical foundation of our nation.”

“Gabby is awesome as Fiona.

Changing from a princess to an ogre will take some stage magic, but it is something else entirely that has provided a challenge in the role of Fiona.

“What’s difficult about Fiona is trying to encapsulate what being alone for a long time would be like,” Gabby said. “She’s a little weird and awkward. It’s awesome to be a princess (and the embodiment of little girls’ dreams) but not be perfect. It’s cool to play a character that’s so unique.”

The stage production of an animated musical is also unique.

Instead of using static backdrops, director Erin Brubaker and assistant director John Biles have opted to use projections, enabling multiple backgrounds to appear in one scene. Several actors operate puppets while they are on stage and will do the shrill voices like those in the movie. “It’s really cool,” Gabby observed.

The plot of the stage musical is practically identical to the movie, but the music is almost entirely different. The only song in the movie that was included in the stage version is “I’m a Believer.” Gabby noted that the show is appropriate for people of all ages, and rather than being only a child’s musical, there are jokes adults will like.

Robert Ballard, founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 annual event hosted by The Manufacturers’ Association. The event will take place on Thursday, April 25, at The Pullo Center at Penn State York, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York.

In addition to the works by Wagner, the LSO will present Dmitri Shostakovich’s first concerto, the Concerto in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and Strings.

Shostakovich wrote the piece with the intention of performing it himself to showcase his strengths as a pianist. LSO’s performance of the piece will showcase pianist Asiya Korepanova and LSO principal trumpet player Luis Engelke.

Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present a concert titled “Ride of the Valkyries� on Saturday, March 2, at 3 and 8 p.m. at the historic Fulton Theatre, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The program will be the fourth concert of the LSO’s 72nd season.

The predominantly Wagnerian program will feature “The Ride of The Valkyries.â€? The piece is the prelude to Act III of “Die WalkĂźreâ€? (“The Valkyrieâ€?), the second of the four operas by Wagner that constitute “Der Ring des Nibelungenâ€? (“The Ring of the Nibelungâ€?). Commonly known as “The Ring,â€? the opera cycle is based on a Norse saga focusing on a magical golden ring and the history of a family of gods. “The Ringâ€? began as a single opera focusing on the death of Siegfried, and it expanded as Wagner worked to combine literature, theater and music into a total artwork.

Production took place from 1848 to 1874.

The program will also include Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll,� known as a musical love letter to his second wife, Cosima Wagner. It was a combined Christmas and birthday gift to her, as

Students Excel In Spelling Bee George A. Smith Middle School recently held its spelling bee. John Cheek won by correctly spelling “wastrels” and then “cologne.” The runners-up were Charlotte Matos, Mya Monroy, and Noah Goslin.

According to Smith teacher Sandy Lee, the competition was tight and the spelling

bee advanced to the 10th round. Contestants has to spell words such as “indelible” and “clichés.”

John, Charlotte, Mya, and Noah will compete in a written test on Thursday, Feb. 28, in hopes of advancing to the Lancaster County Spelling Bee in March.

Beauty” Marionette Shows Set Lancaster Marionette Theatre, 126 N. Water St., Lancaster, will present “Sleeping Beauty” on Saturdays at 11 a.m. through March 9. The show opened on Feb. 2.

The production was written and created by artistic director Robert Brock and will be performed by Brock using Tchaikovsky’s ballet score. Backstage tours will be offered 20 minutes prior to curtain, and the John Durang Puppet Museum will be open before all performances.

The library will showcase Ferguson’s linoleum block print Christmas cards, which she printed by hand for more than 40 years. More recently, she decided to reuse the same blocks and paint them in watercolors

as a reserve to the print.

After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Art, Ferguson returned to the local area to teach art for the Penn Manor School District for 30 years. For many years, she traveled to craft shows to exhibit her Tole works, paintings made on tin, wood,

Lenten Tea from pg 1 slate, and other materials. Ferguson has contributed pen-andink drawings to each of the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society’s annual calendars since 1984. Her current interests are watercolors and ceramics. She has also worked oil pastels.

Additionally, Drost is a songwriter for Songs of Love, a nonprofit organization that connects songwriters with terminally ill children. She has composed and recorded hundreds of songs for the families with their child as the focus of the song.

New Ag Business Service Slated Under the Ground is an annual subscription-based service and network through Penn State Extension that provides businesses with a comprehensive picture of their retail storefront from the eyes of peers and marketing specialists.

The program is open to all small agricultural businesses within southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania that have a retail space.

Businesses can become part of the peer network. Through direct observation as secret shoppers, participants will get to the root of how different agricultural retail spaces are designed to enhance the customer experience. Each business involved will receive quarterly reports detailing feedback from both fellow business owners and industry specialists. Businesses will be provided with quarterly reports that will assess their displays, signage, customer service, and more.

Partnership Has Global Impact

Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond.

Deep in the interior jungle regions of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu, NiVan villagers gather their jugs to begin the morethan-one-hour hike each way to collect water. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Flemmens, Messiah College’s director of The Collaboratory, wraps up preparations for The Collaboratory’s Monday night discipleship meeting with students. Two very different worlds collide when The Collaboratory teams up with Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) to complete life-changing community transformation projects in various regions around the globe.

“Our Collaboratory mission statement boils down to two things: changing the world and changing us,” shared Flemmens. “(Working with FIA), we have the opportunity to do good projects in various places around the globe.

This changes our interface with our learning and the application of what we are learning. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.”

As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island.

Museum Reaches $250,000 Goal The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg announced that it has reached the $250,000 goal for the Ready for the Roundhouse fundraising campaign for the preservation of five historic steam locomotives.

The nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania took the lead in the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign, which kicked off with a $50,000 matching fund challenge from the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society. The campaign began in November 2016, and the $250,000 goal was met in December 2018.

The five steam locomotives that are part of the Ready for the Roundhouse campaign are keystone pieces that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Historic Collection. They include Pennsylvania Railroad M1b No. 6755, K4s No. 3750, L1s No. 520, H10s No. 7688, and B6sb No. 1670. These engines, along with the restored E6s No. 460, are slated to take their place in the museum’s tobe-built roundhouse, for which ground could possibly be broken this year.

In general, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s restoration projects are continuing. Individuals who are skilled in welding, metal fabrication, cabinet making, painting, and pipe fitting are needed in the restoration shop as volunteers and are invited to contact the volunteer/program coordinator. Donations for equipment restoration are also accepted on the museum’s website.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a worldclass collection of 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, a library and archives, and an immersive education center, along with special events, programs, and exhibits.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History, with the active support of the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Solanco Advances to District Semifinals

In the win or go home portion of their schedule, top seed Solanco dug deep for a 51-44 victory over a scrappy No. 16 New Oxford team last Tuesday night in the opening round of the District Three Class 5A playoffs in Quarryville. The win punched Solanco’s ticket to the PIAA playoffs.

Three days later, they earned a 6453 come-from-behind win over Mechanicsburg to advance to the semifinals opposite Palmyra.

“After a ten day layoff between games, it was great to get back on our home court and play,” said head coach Chad McDowell of Tuesday’s outing. “I thought we responded well to the layoff and took control of the game with a quick start.”

The Mares shook off 13 first half turnovers and survived a second half shooting slump while never losing the lead. Solanco, with a balanced scoring quarter, jumped out to a 15-9 lead.

New Oxford, behind an aggressive press and taking advantage of turnovers, scored the first six points of the second quarter, knotting the score at 15-15 with 5:18 left.

“We did a spectacular job on their big, Morgan Adams (6 points in the first half),” said McDowell. “We knew coming in that she would cause problems in the paint but we double teamed her every time she touched the ball in the low block. Jade Eshleman, Mackenzie Glatfelter, Kara (McClune), Aleksa Burger and Jenna Dombach did an outstanding job guarding her and doubling her,” he

added. “We knew we needed to box out and I thought we did a good job there, winning the battle on the boards 33-28.”

Solanco countered with a pair of Burger buckets sandwiched around a Grace Kreider free throw and pushed the lead back to five, 20-15 while a jumper by Dombach and a Jess Cabrera steal turned layup before a New Oxford free throw made it 24-19 at the break.

A Cabrera (5 points) fueled 9-2 run started the third quarter and Solanco seemed poised to pull away, leading 33-21 with 5:22 left and 40-29 at the start of the fourth.

The 9-14 Colonials opened the final frame with a 9-2 run, cutting the lead to 42-38. With both teams trading turnovers, and fouls, the Mares maintained the lead with five different players combining to hit 7-of-12 free throws over the final three minutes and clutch rebounding by Jade Eshleman who hauled in 12 on the night.

“They made a few runs but we were able to weather them,” McDowell said. “We stepped up and made shots when we needed to or got a stop when we needed it. When faced

with adversity, this team responds time again.”

Burger notched a team high 13 points but also grabbed eight boards, five steals and dished out five assists.

Cabrera also hit for double figures with a dozen while Kreider, also with five steals, put up eight points with Eshleman adding seven and Dombach netting six. Paige Phillips and Mackenzie Gladfelter combined for five.

WRESTLING This past weekend three sophomores and one senior made the trip to Hersheypark Arena to compete in the District Three Class 5A championships.

“We knew going in that we had some tough matchups,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “The guys wrestled well, though the records to not reflect that. You always like to see a couple sneak through but this experience, for three sophomores, will make a big difference next year.”

Chase Charles (126), the lone senior in the group, suffered a 10-1 loss to Dallastown’s Cael Turnbill and then dropped a 2-0 result, on a first period takedown, to Dylan Ramsey of Shippensburg. Both Turnbill and Ramsey advanced to the consi-semis.

Will Give Grant The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) invites local nonprofit organizations to apply for a Junior League Community Grant. The grant program’s goal is focused on the JLL’s current initiatives, Girls in STEM and Resilient Youth (Youth at Risk), looking to create deeper partnerships with community organizations that support these initiatives and the JLL mission.

Charles scored a 12-1 tech fall over Devohn Page, of Milton Hershey, pinned Hempfield’s Clay Gainer, and put together back-to-back decisions over Palmyra’s Jacob Myers and Ty Grassel.

“Chase was winning 5-0 in the second period before getting caught and pinned,” said Mendez. “He was able to re-group and battled back to place.”

Finishing fourth was Houghton and Fulton. Houghton got underway with a 14-0 major over L-S’s Hunter Erb but suffered a 6-3 quarterfinals loss to Hershey’s Ethan Ketner. He came back with a 1:36 fall over Josiah Lutz, of Manheim Central before bowing out with a 4-2 loss to Tanner Stefanick.

“Ronnie loss to Coleman 7-5 earlier this year,” Mendez said. “And he was beating Zeamer before getting pinned.”

Juniors Nathanael Neuhauser (285) and Joey Vandegriff (132) both settled for fifth place finishes. Neuhauser went 2-2 with four straight falls while Vandegriff earned three wins, two by fall, and suffered two losses. He was pinned by eventual fourth place finisher Owen Rohrer of Penn Manor and dropped a 10-2 major to third place winner Bryce Buckman of Central Dauphin.

“Joey beat Rohrer twice this season in tough matches and lost to Buckman, who beat him earlier this year,” noted Mendez.

Wrestling at 220, Shaneef Carter was a sixth place finisher.

“Having your team perform their best as the post season begins is always the goal,” stated Mendez. “I thought we had a good week of practice leading up to the tournament but we didn’t seem to have that extra edge this weekend.”

“That was a hard-earned 32 points,” said McDowell. “We had 22 offensive possessions and scored on 15 of them. We committed just two turnovers in the quarter and were 15of-18 from the foul line. Plus our defense held them to 14 points. It was a complete quarter of basketball.”

The Mares put up 32 points over the course of the first three quarters and matched that effort over the final eight minutes.

Solanco, with a 9-0 run, tied the score at 43-43 on a three-ball by Phillips, who finished with nine points after nailing two key triples in the third quarter.

Back-to-back buckets by Eshleman put Solanco in front with 3:30 left while Kreider added an exclamation point, nailing two straight threepointers that pushed the lead to 5549 with 1:51 on the clock. They managed nine more points down the stretch to lock up the win.

Down 25-18 at the break, Solanco went to a full court man defense in the second half in hopes of making up ground.

“We don’t normally play man-toman defense but felt it was what we needed to do to give ourselves a chance to win,” stated McDowell.

The “Portrait of a Woman in Silk” Material Culture Forum will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m., using artifacts from the collection, LancasterHistory assistant curator Tori Pyle will present a close look at the ways in which portraiture and textiles interact. At 4:30 p.m., Dr. Zara Anishanslin, art history professor at the University of Delaware, will highlight the lives of four people: a London weaver, one of England’s few female silk designers, a Philadelphia merchant’s wife, and a New England painter. The presentation will explore how each of them interacted with a single silk dress. There is a fee for tickets, and LancasterHistory members will receive a discount.

Before the Civil War, a group of fugitive slaves settled in the town of Waverly, north of Scranton. During the Civil War, despite widespread racism, 13 of these individuals went south again to fight for the Union. Waverly native Jim Remsen uncovered the story of these 13 individuals. Lancaster students in kindergarten through grade 12 attending public, private, parochial, or home schools are invited to submit writing and artwork for display at a Library Happening at Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., in Lancaster. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Submitted work may be chosen for inclusion in a book and/or in a performance piece to be created by Sandy Asher, a Lancaster author, playwright, school and library visitor, and workshop leader. Both the book and the performance piece will debut at the Library Happening. The event will be free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be offered for purchase.

Submissions are currently being accepted. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 15. Submissions are limited to one piece of writing of up to 500 words or one piece of artwork up to 8.5 by 11 inches per student.
