Solanco

OnFriday, March 10, Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville, will host REAL Life for its 11th-grade students. REAL Life is a full-day school event offered by Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JASCPA) that seeks to prepare students for many practical challenges faced in adulthood.
At the beginning of the day, the class of juniors will be separated into two groups. For the first half of the day, the students in one group will complete budgeting exercises and engage in activities that will teach them how to manage finances in adult life. While the first group is completing budgeting activities, the second group will rotate through four educational modules. In the middle of the day, the groups will switch activities.
During the budgeting portion of the program, each student will be assigned a hypothetical life scenario and career. Based on the given scenario, the students will have to create a budget and balance it to match their circumstances. A student may
play the role of a welder, doctor or teacher during the activity and make decisions such as choosing what type of vehicle or home to purchase with his or her income. Some students may choose to purchase a high-end vehicle in their scenarios and will need to factor in the increased maintenance and insurance costs, whereas other students may choose a more affordable car.
“They quickly learn how these decisions affect a budget in the long run,” said Allison Kierce of JASCPA.
“If you have a career that you needed to attend college for, you have to factor in student loans. It creates a lot of conversation at the table, and they realize things that they might not have realized before.”
For the second portion of the REAL Life program, students will complete activities in four modules:
“Interviewing Tips,” “#Adulting,” “My Brand” and “Is the Price Right?” “Interviewing Tips” will cover good practices in interviews for opportunities such as summer jobs and internships.
In the second module, students will play #Adulting, a board game
based on the Game of Life that provides the kids with an opportunity to act out challenges faced in adulthood. As students progress through the board in #Adulting, they will encounter problems like getting a vehicle repaired and roofing a home.
In the third module, students will discuss the importance of maintaining a personal brand through interactions on social media and in-person events. “My Brand” emphasizes the importance of conducting oneself mindfully and covers how to be careful with one’s brand.
In the final module, students will play “Is the Price Right?” In this game, they will guess the costs of common household goods and other items.
“So many students come away from the program saying that it opened their eyes to things they didn’t realize before,” said Kierce. “It’s a hands-on, immersive day. We call it ‘REAL Life’ because that’s what’s coming down the road.”
JASCPA is still looking for volunteers for the event. To sign up to be a volunteer for REAL Life, visit www.jascpa.org.
Food is one consistency in everyone’s lives. No matter who you are, you get hungry and need to eat. Although some prefer to frequent their favorite restaurants or order takeout, others take as much joy in preparing food as they do when eating it.
views cooking as not only a means to create a delicious meal, but also a way to experience new things, connect with others and bond with his family.
Brett Geesey of RonksTen months ago, Brett created a Facebook group titled “parents teaching their children how to cook.” Brett has worked as a chef and in kitchens for 15 years and was inspired to create the group after he began cooking with his 3-yearold son, Jameson. “It started off as me inviting him to cook with me and try new foods,” Brett said. “He cracked his first egg at 3 and a half years old; since then, he was hooked.”
Jameson, who is now 4 years old, won’t start attending school until the fall, when he will become a student in the Solanco School District. But the young chef has already dredged cod fish and chicken, cooked lo mein and prepared breakfast frittata alongside other items on an

Denlinger’s Seasonal Murals Rest At New Holland Shop
In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front
of the couple’s shop.
“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.
Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

impressive culinary resume. Brett explained that by teaching his son to cook at a young age, he is fostering a desire for him to try new things.
“We want to steer away from him saying ‘I just want chicken nuggets’ and instead encourage more of ‘Let’s go into the kitchen and cook,’” Brett said. Even when they prepare something that isn’t entirely healthy such as fried catfish, Brett and Jameson still prefer cooking to buying fast food.
Since Brett started the Facebook group, families around the world have joined the Geesey family on their culinary adventures. Brett’s page now has over 1,000 followers, including chefs from Australia, Germany, New Zealand and parts of Asia. “I didn’t realize how fast it would blow up,” Brett said. “It’s not just about food; it’s about family bonding too. It’s about getting in the kitchen together and having fun.” While Brett and Jameson collaborate on the meals, Brett’s wife, Katie, handles the baking.
Brett and other members of the Facebook group post
cooking videos, share kitchen tips and exchange recipes. “They’re learning a lot and posting their own videos too,” Brett said. “It’s amazing to see how many people are enjoying time with their children and cooking good food.”
Brett currently works as a cook at the Fulton Steamboat Inn in Ronks and has explored many areas of the culinary arts throughout his career. For two years, Brett lived on the coast of Maryland so that he could learn to prepare fresh fish. He experimented with different ways to cook seafood and learned how to fillet fish before moving back home to Lancaster.
The Geesey family views cooking not only as a necessity, but also as a way to make family memories. Brett said that he remembers how his grandmother used to cook amazing food, and beyond the memories made alongside the meals, one of the most important aspects of cooking is helping others and experiencing new things together.

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric outpatient therapy services, received $250,000 in grant funding from the Truist
Foundation and the Truist Charitable Fund to support Schreiber in its $12.4 million capital campaign and expansion project. The project, which had a groundbreaking ceremony in October 2022, is scheduled to be completed in January 2024.
The three-story expansion project will add 7,000 square feet of new therapy space and convert other sections of the building into new treatment areas. This project will ultimately allow Schreiber Center to serve 500 more children and create additional state-of-the-art therapy spaces.

In a regular, season-ending match that featured seven forfeits, six bouts wrestled and three pins, Solanco fell short in a non-section clash with visiting Donegal, 37-33 Thursday, February 9th.
“We knew, between myself and the Donegal coach, that both teams were not a full strength due to illness and injury,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “They knew they had to forfeit several of the lower weights and wee had forfeits at the upper weights. That left us with just six contested matches.”
Solanco’s Caden Rutt (106), Bradeon Bickford (113), Ayden Herr (120) and Paul Kocher (126) received forfeit wins in each of the first four bouts, pushing Solanco to quick 24-0 advantage.
The Indians got on board with a 14-1 major at 132 but Jared Fulton extended Solanco’s advantage to 30-4 with the fastest fall of the night, a 50 second result over Austin Miller.
“Jared is 29-3 this season with 18 falls,” pointed out Mendez.
The rest of the match, well all but one bout, went to Donegal. They earned a 3-1 decision at 145 when Landen Baughman edged Ben Williams, picked up a pair of
falls at 152 and 160, and after Blaine Plastino’s 4-0 decision at 172, received three straight forfeit wins to cap the scoring.
“Ben’s match was tough,” said Mendez. “He beat Baughman in a close 8-7 decision a few weeks ago. This time Donegal won off a 50/50 takedown in the third period that went their way.”
Plastino scored a first period takedown and a second period reversal to get past Sergio Garcia, scoring Solanco’s last team points of the match.
SWIMMING
Swimming independently, Solanco’s Addie Scott opened post-season action by competing in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships held at the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium in West Lawn. The two day event got underway Friday, February 10.
Scott opened action on Saturday morning, grabbing a first place finish in the 100 free with a 53.61, holding off Warwick senior Melanie Hahn (54.76) and Lampeter-Strasburg junior Zara Paisley (54.85). The Solanco senior improved her winning 100 free time from last year (52.98).
Three events later Scott was set to defend last year’s winning 100 backstroke (1:00.37) but, despite lower-
ing her time to 59.62, she settled for third place, following Lancaster Catholic sophomore Addison Elliott (58.16) and Garden Spot freshman Mia Parry (58.59).
Every season, win or lose, provides its challenges. Last year the girls’ basketball team suffered a handful of different injuries and finished the season at 3-19. This year head coach Chad McDowell continued his battle with colon cancer but was often missing from the sideline. The girls, as their coach has always been, remained positive and continued to battle on the hardwoods under the guidance of interim head coach Jeff McCardell. They finished the season tied for fourth in Section Two (5-7) and sat at 8-14 overall.
Individually, Jenna Ehlers led the way with a 12.4 ppg scoring average. Arianna Seiberlich followed at 5.1. Ehlers also led with 20 blocked shots, 201 total rebounds and in shooting percentages. The senior canned 33% from three-point range, 44% from two, and was a 63% free throw shooter.
Paige Althouse was close behind in long range shooting, knocking down 42% while Sarah Landis followed in second place at the free throw line with 63%. She also,
along with Kara Peace, hauled in 93 rebounds.
Peace led the assists category with 62, and followed Josie Janssen and Seiberlich, who led with 45 steals, with 42. Frances Northern took seven charges to lead that category.
As a team, Solanco shot 34% from two-point range, 25% from three and connected on 48-of-64 free throw attempts. They outrebounded their opponents by three and committed just one more turnover per game on the average.
“We need to shoot better,
especially from the free throw line,” said McCardell. “And I’m surprised the turnovers were that close. I was happy we were able to win the boards. Defensively, Kara and Sarah were asked to defend tough players without breaks.”
In their last regular indoor meet of the season, 11 Solanco athletes qualified to compete at PTFCA Track Carnival in Lehigh.
“Anthony Solis-Morales finished fifth in the mile and Martha Weaver finished eighth in the shot put with a
1.5 inch PR,” noted head coach Jen McDowell. “Katie Urbine also qualified for that meet but competed Thursday night at the Millrose Games in NY and finished second with a jump of 13-1.5.
“The state indoor meet is at the end of the month,” she added.
Also competing at Lehigh was Riley Ford (60, 200), Sarah Bard (60), Maite Granja (high jump), Tucker Kylar (high jump) and Ford, Michael Bangura, Aidan Rutherford and Ian Althoff (4x200 relay).
In a room at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown, a group of boys are bonding. They’re learning the importance of friendship, the significance of ceremony and the benefits of community service. They’re all members of DeMolay Elizabethtown, a chapter of DeMolay International.
The group is open to boys ages 12 to 21, and the chapter meets on the first and third Sundays of the month. “I like doing this because it’s a brotherhood opportunity for young men to get together for service, fun events and to support charities,” said Kenton Green, who is the master councilor for the chapter. As Kenton explained, one boy is chosen by his peers for this leadership role and serves a six-month term. He runs the
meetings, helped by the rest of the council, which includes Todd Schwartz Jr. as senior councilor and Rusty Armstrong as junior councilor. During the meetings, the boys are guided by a roster of advisers, including Gary Schwartz, Todd’s grandfather; Dave Berry; and Jesse Spence.
“The major charity we support is Children’s Dyslexia Centers,” said Kenton, a 15year-old who attends Solanco High School. At a recent meeting, a group of boys worked on plans for Dodgeball for Dyslexia, a tournament that will be held on Saturday, May 13. Members of DeMolay have also volunteered at the Taste of Western Lancaster County at Elizabethtown Public Library, the Community Cupboard food bank and the Elizabethtown Fair. Upcoming fun
outings for the group include bowling, a weekend cabin trip and a Barnstormers baseball game.
As Gary explained, DeMolay began in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo. The first chapter started in Pennsylvania in 1923. The organization is named for Jacques DeMolay, the last grand master of the Knights Templar, and it was started by Frank S. Land. Land and other organizers created a book that each chapter uses as the structure for meetings, and all DeMolay chapters emphasize seven core values: filial love, reverence, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanness and patriotism. Meetings feature opening and closing ceremonies, business items such as bills and budgeting and discussion of upcoming events.
“I am in this club for the privilege of service,” said Kenton’s brother, Holden, who is 18. “DeMolay offers a prime opportunity to do that. This is a learning opportunity to serve, to practice and improve your public speaking and to grow in your leadership skills. It’s also fun to hang around other like-minded people your age.”
The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene, which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene,
which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a oneroom schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.
Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the
frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that
makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Dibartolo noted the lavender hues of the sky in one painting and the shadows on the water in another. “Aren’t they beautiful?” she commented.
Dibartolo and Heagy would like to see the paintings go to an appropriate home within Lancaster County. To contact someone at Tannery Antiques, readers may visit www.reallancastercounty.com or search for “Tannery Antiques LLC” on Facebook.
The Lancaster Chamber is seeking nominations for the ATHENA Award and the Small Business Person of the Year Award. Each year, the Chamber recognizes local business leaders who have made an incredible impact on the community. The awards
celebrate recipients’ leadership, honor their individual journey, provide insight on their business philosophy, and pay tribute to their dedication to making Lancaster a more thriving community. The award recipients are honored at the Chamber’s major
annual event, the Annual Dinner, typically held in late spring or early summer.
Nominations will be accept-
ed until Tuesday, Feb. 28. To learn more and submit a nomination, visit www.lancaster chamber.com/awards.

For Todd, the organization has provided not just an opportunity to have fun, but also a time for personal growth. “DeMolay helped me open up more,” said Todd, 19.
“When I first joined, I was very shy and quiet, and I can say that through DeMolay, I have changed very much.”
Rusty, a 15-year-old Solanco student, joined DeMolay at Kenton’s urging.
“I would encourage anyone who is interested to learn
more,” he said. “You’ll learn so much from this group, you’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll make a lot of friends.”
There are currently 40 boys in the Elizabethtown chapter of DeMolay, but about 15 regularly attend meetings. Boys attend from all over Lancaster and surrounding counties, and the group is looking for new members. For more information on DeMolay, contact Kenton at 717-333-3781 or kentonmgreen@gmail.com.

According to Alicia Burton, director of “Hello, Dolly!” at Cavod Theatre, the show is about finding joy in each moment. Musical director Amy Rau concurred, pointing out that Dolly is going through a difficult time, but that she is stepping out in faith. “Even in the hardest things we go through, you’ve got to find
the bright side,” she said.
“Hello Dolly!” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 26 and March 5.
“Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and
matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Erin Wright. The musical follows her to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Eliza Moran, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Alex Weaver, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Richard Weaver, with Minnie Fay, played by Melina Nicole Stratigos. Dolly also solves romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde Kemper, played by Jada Correll, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Lincoln Everett. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.
“‘Hello, Dolly!’ is a spectacular show,” said Burton, who noted Cavod Theatre was in a good position to stage the dance-heavy musical because Cavod Performing Arts trains dancers. “We have been able to utilize their strengths,” she
said. Burton noted that large numbers including “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and “Hello, Dolly!” call for families and townspeople in the ensemble. Both Amy Rau and Burton said they were blessed to see lots of teens and children at auditions.
Amy said that the songs themselves are joyful and memorable. “You cannot listen to ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’ without smiling earto-ear,” she said. “The music is so much fun.”
“You leave singing these songs,” added Burton, who is also enjoying working with the cast members practicing the Broadway classic. “The seasoned leads are thrilled to have the opportunity to play these iconic roles, and we are getting to teach the younger ones about this historic show.”
Tickets, which are discounted for students, may be purchased at ww.cavod.org, by emailing info@cavod.org, or by calling 717-354-3355.

During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn handsonly CPR.
If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next, place one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.
Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist. Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart .org/handsonlycpr.
