COBYS Family Services has slated a free program for kinship caregivers, who are those raising a relative’s child, such as a grandchild or a niece or nephew. The monthly educational discussion group with other kinship families will feature a different topic at each month’s session, as well as the sharing of practical community resources. Topics include Setting Boundaries, Healing From Anger, Emotional Wellness, and more.

It’s Go Time For Go-Fore Golf!

It has been nine years since Go-Fore Golf was first introduced at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. The 10th annual event will be held in the library - yes, in and around the bookshelves - on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Go-Fore Golf is a fun, family-focused indoor miniature golf fundraiser designed to energize the public and build community partnerships,” said youth services coordinator Randi Kennedy.

“The community will have a chance to come out of the cold and play a unique round of miniature golf through the library, enjoy lunch or a snack at our 17th Hole Café, and participate in other family-friendly activities, all while helping to raise money for the library.”

The food bank has requested the following items: one-pound containers of peanut butter; canned salmon, chicken, or tuna; one-pound bags of rice; canned potatoes; 12ounce boxes of pasta or macaroni and cheese; and pouch meals, such as “helper” boxes.

There will be a variety of tasks at the packing event, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Some jobs will require lifting, while others may be done while seated. Training will be provided, and participants will learn about the impact Feed My Starving Children has on those it services. However one serves, it is a valuable event in which to take part, Wenger suggested.

The primary goal of the event is to help young ladies sparkle and shine for the football booster club’s daddy/daughter dance that will be held that evening.

“I thought of this because I went to the daddy/daughter dance and my sister is still able to go,” said class member Kayla McCauley. “I thought it would be a good fundraiser. Even though we’re trying to make a profit, it is for the kids to enjoy.”

“It’s a nice way to combine the two,” added class adviser Emily Dawley.

The temporary salon will be held at the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville.

Guests may enter through the Great Hall doors.

The salon will offer hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, and light makeup. Prices have been set for each service, with a discount given if all four services are purchased. While the sophomores feel confident in their abilities to do nails and makeup, responsibility for hairstyling has been outsourced to parents and professionals.

Food insecurity is not just a problem “over there,” but it is a local one as well, Wenger said. In addition to monetary contributions, volunteers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the packing event. The items will then be delivered to

During the event, the dry ingredients for 300,000 meals will be portioned and sealed into bags that will be sent to those in need around the world. It will take 1,500 volunteers and $66,000 to complete the project.

The value of each meal is 22 cents, and volunteers are asked to contribute toward that cost.

Donations from those who cannot help with the packing will be accepted as well.

Event chairperson Lora Magnus Wenger shared that according to Feed My Starving Children, approximately 6,200 children around the world die each day from hunger and malnutrition-related causes. “As a com-

The organizers hope that they have improved upon last year’s event. Dawley noted that more helpers will be on hand this year and that the appointment registration has been simplified.

Adults may reserve a time to bring their girls to the salon, and they will indicate their desired services at the appointment, rather than in advance. Appointments will be available from noon to 4 p.m., and while they are not required, they are strongly recommended. The later times are the most popular and fill up quickly, Dawley said. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the salon to add to the festivities and keep spirits up while the young ladies are waiting with their parents to be pampered.

“Moms tend to bring their daughters to have some fun together before the dance,” Dawley said.

Kayla and class members Holly Sensenig and Paige Balliet offered basic advice for making a trip to the salon a success. Hairstyling clients should arrive with dry hair and wear tops that either button up the front or have large necklines so they will not mess up their hair or makeup when changing for the dance. Anyone receiving a pedicure should wear flip-flops.

The proceeds from the event will be banked for the Class of 2021’s senior year, when the funds will be spent on things like prom, class trips, a picnic, and a class gift.

The Strasburg Fire Company extended its annual spring donation and consignment sale to two days last year, and sale committee members were so pleased with the results that they will keep the two-day format again this year. The 45th annual sale will be held at the fire station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, and continuing on Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 8 a.m.

“Friday evening’s sale was very successful,” reported committee chair Ivan Fisher, referencing the 2018 event. “There were lots of people, and it made Saturday more enjoyable.” The auction on Friday ran until 8 p.m. last year, and Ivan expects it to run later this year. Crafts and small quilt items will comprise many of the auction lots.

This year, the food offerings on Friday evening have been expanded, with grilled sausage sandwiches, fried shrimp, and french fries added to the menu, which also includes chicken corn soup made by fire company members and volunteers.

Soup takeouts will be available on Feb. 22 from noon to 5 p.m., as well as all day on Feb. 23.

“We’re trying to make (Friday) a family night out. Sit down with your kids and enjoy your evening,” Ivan invited. He noted that tables will be set up in the station’s dining hall, and a few high chairs will be available for little children.

The success of Friday’s sale last year enabled more items to be moved on Saturday, Ivan remarked. The weather did not appear to dampen spirits too much.

“We had a good day (on Saturday) despite the rain,” said committee member Jonathan Peachey.

Ivan explained that on wet days like last year, there are more tents to protect items and attendees and much less hay and straw for sale. This will be the first year that horses are not on the sale bill, he added.

“Mostly fire companies don’t sell horses anymore,” Peachey remarked.

The spring sale - the fire company discontinued its fall sale several years ago - is the organization’s largest fundraiser. “We are looking to replace

an engine in 2021, so it’s important to have another good sale,” Ivan said. Sale committee member Mike Lockard shared that the apparatus scheduled to be retired is a 1982 Seagrave pumper.

In hopes of having another profitable sale, the committee has arranged for thousands of items to cross the auction blocks. Hundreds of quilts, crafts, new and used tools, antiques, groceries, new and used furniture, outdoor furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, shrubbery, feed and bedding, farm machinery, sheds, building materials, carriages, gift certificates, and lawn and garden supplies are slated for sale on Feb. 23. The fire company kitchen will sell a variety of food and beverages, and there will be several food vendors as well. A local Amishrun ice cream shop will be among the vendors for the first time this year. “They support the fire company, so it gives us a chance to support them as well,” Ivan said.

Ivan expressed his gratitude for the generosity of area businesses, many of whom have donated gift certificates or other items for the sale. He added a special thanks for the members of the sale committee, including his co-chairs, Isaac E. Fisher and Amos Fisher. The vast majority of the committee is Amish.

“The Amish community feels it’s a good way to give back to the fire company for all the services it provides,” Ivan said.

“But it’s not just Amish that makes the sale successful; it’s the whole community.”

Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical.

Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder.

LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2.

“Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played

by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition.

Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s.

The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay strong,” said Calix-Alvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.”

Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.”

Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said.

“There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting

that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically.

The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig.

Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,” “The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers Schnabel noted that he hopes to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).”

At the recent 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show, held from Jan. 5 to 12, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera celebrated agricultural education during the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention with more than 5,000 FFA members and guests.

Pennsylvania’s more than 150 high school agriculture education programs aim to prepare students for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and beyond.

The Mid-Winter Convention recognized the academic, leadership and field-based experiences of 409 recipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest honor earned at the state level. In addition, the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association awarded more than 364 firstyear members their own official FFA jacket after they completed a compe titive application process.

Last year marked the creation of the Commission on Agriculture Education Excellence. The 15-member commission complements Gov. Tom Wolf’s PAsmart initiative, an investment in STEM and computer science education and handson technical education programs.

More than 5,000 FFA members and guests attended the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention during the recent Pennsylvania Farm Show.

PAsmart will invest $20 million in new funding for computer science and STEM education, as well as an additional $10 million investment in apprenticeships and job training programs for in-demand careers.

As part of a workforce development plan outlined in a report issued in 2018, the departments are working to identify gaps in education and training for those

in-demand career paths; focus on workbased learning, including micro-credentials and apprenticeships; and help Pennsylvanians obtain meaningful careers.

The Pennsylvania FFA Association aims to help students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

LMS, Kraybill Announce Agreement After 12 years of recent shared ownership, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Kraybill Mennonite School have announced a new beginning. Both parties signed an agreement on Nov. 9, 2018, stating that Kraybill Mennonite School will become fully independent again beginning on Monday, July 1, 2019. Kraybill Mennonite and LMS have a 40year history of working together, at points independently and at other times jointly.

Kraybill Mennonite School sought independent status in March 2018 after LMS shared the need to combine grade levels or close the campus due to decreased enrollment. The Kraybill community united in support of continued operation of the school and its mission. Desiring a Mennonite school in the Mount Joy area to continue, LMS agreed to another year in partnership, culminating with fully independent status for Kraybill for the 2019-20 academic year.

“Lancaster Mennonite is pleased to see the Kraybill community rally to ensure Mennonite education continues in Mount Joy,” said Pam Tieszen, LMS superintendent. “It is clear that the transition team is as dedicated as LMS to see our mission continue. It is only with renewed community and family support that our schools are able to effectively (serve) students.”

Kraybill Mennonite School continues to offer faith-integrated academic programs, and it has announced a decrease in its tuition rate, according to Kraybill school board chair Mark Graybill.

He added, “Course offerings have been strengthened and changes have prompted a strong enrollment response.”

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon has been awarded a grant from the Rite Aid Foundation for $30,000.

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, emotional, and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences.

The program’s intentional curriculum places an emphasis on developing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate running and other physical activities. The life skills curriculum is delivered by trained and caring coaches in a safe and inclusive environment. The after-school program combines a research-based curriculum, trained coaches, and a commitment to serve all girls.

PA Hope Ride cyclists may ride as individuals or as teams. Riders may participate in one or two days of the tour. Participating cyclists pay a registration fee and are provided with tips to reach individual fundraising goals.

The Hershey Hope Lodge will be the start and finish of this year’s ride. The “Hope” Riders may pass through five of Pennsylvania’s counties and many rural small towns. On June 22, routes will include 30, 62, 70, and 100 miles. The route on June 23 will be 70 miles. All routes on either day will end at the Hershey Hope.

On the route, cyclists of all skill levels enjoy a mix of scenic

byways, country roads, and trails.

While experienced riders enjoy challenging options on portions of the route, intermediate and novice riders will have designated courses to fit their level of riding.

Those who choose a one-day ride will finish at the Hope Lodge to a special finish line celebration. Those who are riding two days will finish their first day ride at Kutztown University campus, where they will share their adventures of the day at a sit-down dinner. Cyclists will be provided with all meals, rest stops, night-time accommodations, and full support from mechanics and safety personnel during their one- or two-day excursion.

Bornman Presents In Netherlands

Art Exhibit Makes Debut

Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) worker Jonathan Bornman presented at an event on Nov. 30, 2018, at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Badhoevedorp, Netherlands. The event’s theme was “A Dialogue Comparing the Divine and the Human in Islam and Christianity.” Along with Bornman, the presenters included Dr. Yaser Ellethy, Dr. Khalid Hajji, and Dr. Bert de Ruiter. The Muslim and Christian scholars had been invited to participate by Tyndale professor and EMM worker Dr. Philip A. Gottschalk.

Attendees were predominately seminary students and faculty, but community members were also present. Gottschalk hosted the event as part of a course he teaches titled “Ethics of War, Peace, and Peacemaking.”

Bornman, a Christian-Muslim relations consultant, highlighted the belief that humanity is created in the image of God. He said that humans’ ability to creatively solve problems is an example of humans reflecting God. Illustrating this creative problem-solving, Bornman shared the story of M.J. Sharp and his work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sharp, who was murdered in 2017, creatively sought to promote peace in a challenging setting. Bornman’s main purpose in sharing this story was to emphasize how the creativity of

Lancaster Public Art has debuted a new exhibit at the Lancaster Amtrak Station, 53 McGovern Ave. Two station cases now house work by artist Paolo Del Toro and will be exhibiting in the station until June.

Del Toro is a British-born artist who now resides in Lancaster. His work centers on sculpture and the use of foam and needle-felted wool. To learn more about Del Toro and his work, readers may visit

EMM’s Christian-Muslim Relations Team, of which Bornman is a member, seeks to encourage church leaders to interact with Muslim clerical leaders.

In addition to his work with EMM, Bornman is a Ph.D. candidate at Middlesex University London. His dissertation is focused on the nonviolent practices of a Senegalese Sufi order called the Muridiyya. He served as a Bible teacher in Senegal from 1999 to 2009 but is currently doing research in the Murid community in Harlem, New York City.

Tyndale is an international, English-language seminary. The school has had students from more than 80 countries.

Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list. Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time.

First, people should clean as they go. W hen it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a whole day or weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew.

Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a

home tidy and ready for spurof-the-moment gatherings.

Second, avoid shopping on weekends. People who work a typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule often do their shopping on weekends because that is when they have the most time on their hands. But since that is true for most people, long lines and crowded spaces can be expected when shopping on weekends. People are encouraged to try to carve out some time on a weekday evening,

especially a Monday or Tuesday, to free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines.

Third, simplify meal prep.

Eating healthy, nutritious food does not need to be sacrificed when pressed for time.

Instead, look for low- or noprep meal options at the grocery store that can serve as a standalone meal or as a base with a protein option.

The Lancaster Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will offer beginner American Sign Language (ASL) classes from Tuesday, Feb. 19, through Thursday, April 11. All classes will run from 6 to 8 p.m. The venue features a free lighted parking lot and is handicapped-accessible. Attendees should enter at the rear of the building.

Classes for beginners will include ASL I on Tuesdays and ASL II on Thursdays. These classes will use the book “Signing, How to Speak With Your Hands” by Elaine Costello.

Fulton To Present “The Glass Menagerie” The Ellen Arnold Groff Series in the Tell Studio Theatre will present the Fulton Theatre production of “The Glass Menagerie” from Thursday, Feb. 14, through Sunday, March 3. Previews were slated for Feb. 12 and 13.

The production, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tennessee Williams, takes a look through the fading memory books of Tom’s fractured life as he lives with his controlling mother and introverted sister, Laura.

Despite a slow start that saw the visitors push out to a commanding 48-24 halftime lead, Solanco regrouped and pushed back in the second half. The Mules won the third quarter 20-15 and the fourth frame 16-10, but it was too little too late.

Dawson Kreider led the way with 17 points, including five triples.

“Dawson had a stellar season,” lauded Long. “He led the entire L-L League in three pointers made with 57. Perhaps more impressive is that he shot just over 49% from that range. Most games he had the other team’s top defenders on him,” Long continued. “He didn’t always get the easy looks.”

Kreider finished with a 13 ppg and 3.2 assists per game average.

“I anticipate Dawson to be named a LL League all-star,” said Long. “I believe he can play at the next level and we are exploring possible schools.”

“Zed Baker, a sophomore, averaged nearly 8 ppg, second on our team, but more importantly, improved as a defender,” Long said.

“He can have a major impact on both ends of the floor and I cannot wait to see what he does the next two years.

“Jordan Rush ended his sophomore season starting the last handful of games and really became our go-to person inside,” the coach continued. “He has the ability to score in the paint and rebounds very well. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Solanco’s ten game winning streak came to a close in the quarterfinal round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs held this past Saturday night in Quarryville. The Section Three champs suffered a 55-38 loss to Section Four runner-up Elco (10-3, 19-4) after surrendering a 14-4 run over the last four minutes of the game.

“They created some turnovers and got easy transition points,” stated head coach Chad McDowell of Elco’s fourth quarter run.

Both teams had seven players contribute to the point total but the Raiders put three players in double figures. Grace Kreider, Aleksa Burger and Jess Cabrera each scored eight to lead the Mares.

Cabrera canned a triple with .02 seconds left in the first quarter, converted the free throw and knotted the score at 13-13.

The second quarter was almost as close but the visitors held a slim 21-19 edge at the break.

That nip-and-tuck feel of the first half, however, didn’t materialize after the break.

Elco held a five point lead midway through the third quarter and pushed it to eight by the start of the fourth.

“They increased their defensive pressure and that limited us offensively,” said McDowell. “We were unable to create the normal turnovers that we are used to getting and we never got into a defensive flow,” he added.

“They flipped the turnover game into their favor in the second half.”

Solanco battled early in the final quarter, cutting the lead to 41-34 with 3:47 left but a strong 14-4 run by the Raiders proved to be the difference.

Elco made3 good use of the free throw line, canning 14-of-21 attempts while Solanco was a slim 2-for-4.

The Raiders also held a slim advantage from

behind the arc, netting three to Solanco’s 2.

“This was a great atmosphere and we competed for four quarters,” McDowell stated.

“They played their hearts out and I could not ask for more. We just struggled with their defensive pressure and their inside presence.

Ryelle Shuey (17 points) was the difference maker in the paint.

“It has been a great accomplishment getting to the quarterfinals these past two seasons but now we need to get over the hump and win that quarterfinal game.”

The week opened with a 10-point win at Cocalico last Monday, 61-51. In a game that featured a total of 15 three pointers, Solanco used a 27-18 second half run to extend their 34-33 halftime lead.

“It was a shooters night,” stated McDowell.

“When you have good ball movement, you get some great shots.”

The Eagles, fighting for a league playoff berth, kept things close in the first half, hitting 5-of-8 from down town.

“They made some good shots that we contested,” recalled McDowell. “But we got into a bit of foul trouble and could not press like we usually do. We came out in the second half with our trapping press and were able to get steals and easy transition points. Very early on we had three steals on back-to-back-to-back possessions and pushed our lead to ten,” he continued. “That was a big momentum swing.”

With a balanced offensive attack, Kreider’s 15 points led the way. She was also tops with six steals and five assists. Cabrera dropped in 12 points and Burger, who grabbed seven rebounds, netted 11. Leading rebounder, with ten, Jade Eshleman finished with nine points, Paige Phillips added eight and Jenna Dombach hit for six.

One night later, Solanco hosted Section Two’s third place finisher, Warwick (8-13), and used a 21-10 third quarter domination to pull away with a lopsided 59-31 win.

Burger paced the attack with a doubledouble, netting a season-high 20 points and hauling in a team-best 10 rebounds.

“Aleksa had six offensive rebounds that she either converted into points or she got to the foul line,” noted McDowell.

While Solanco earned a lopsided victory, they did send the Warriors to the free throw line 25 times (Warwick converted 10).

“This was three games in three days with no practice in over a week,” said McDowell.

“That was a key win,” said head coach Tony Mendez of Flatt’s effort.

“He and Herr wrestled earlier in the season and Dominic won in OT as well.”

Ronnie Fulton capped Solanco’s scoring with a 5:35 fall over Jeremy Algoe.

“Chase wrestled a very tough opponent in Bowers (23-3) and controlled from the start of the match,” noted Mendez. “It was his final dual meet as a senior. What a strong way to end.

“We also got good wins from Joey, Jackson and Ronnie,” he added. “Winning these matches by fall helped win the dual.”

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo announced last September that 2019 would be the Year of Return, the start of a 15-year campaign to increase tourism and investment in the small West African country.

Ghana was pivotal in the slave trade, and Akufo-Addo hopes to welcome people of African descent to the country that most likely played a role in their heritage.

The loss of untold numbers of people to the slave trade and colonial rule has had a longlasting impact on the people of Ghana. “Ghana is a part of the world where great need exists,” said Troy Pfoutz, administrative director of Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission, which is based in Mount Joy. “Many people in this West African nation struggle to meet basic needs. Each day, many poor and needy parents have to decide whether to prepare a single meal for their family or to pay the fees necessary to send their children to school.”

To alleviate some of the impoverished Ghanaians’ physical needs and to lighten their spiritual burdens as well, Ghana Initiative has sent medical teams throughout the country for more than five years.

The teams of Ghanaians and Americans provide much-needed health care at no cost while striving to share God’s love with everyone they meet.

As reported in a recent ministry newsletter, UNICEF’s statistics show that malaria, an insect-borne disease, contributes to the death of approximately 20,000 children every year. During medical clinics in 2018, Ghana Initiative volunteers distributed insecticidetreated nets purchased from

Ghanaians and Americans worked together to provide free medical care to those in need as part of the Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission team in 2018. The next coordinated effort will take place from July 30 to Aug. 11.

UNICEF to more than 1,000 homes in the eastern region of Ghana in an effort to cut down on the prevalence of malaria.

Volunteers also gave away tooth care kits and toothbrushes, books, crayons and other school supplies, soccer cleats, clothing, hair supplies, and knitted dolls. Prescription eyewear and sunglasses were distributed during eye clinics.

Ghana Initiative has also begun to build a missionary training center near one of the towns it regularly serves. The venue will include a warehouse for supplies, a classroom, a dormitory, and a ministry office.

The facility will be used to train Ghanaians and other West Africans to enter the missionary field or become pastors.

To make all of this happen, Ghana Initiative relies on the support from individuals and businesses, and it also hosts an annual banquet and benefit auction. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Weaver’s Banquet Facility, 2610 N. Reading Road, Denver.

While banquet tickets are no longer available, the public is invited to attend the auction.

Preview of the auction lots will open at 6:30 p.m., and the bidding will commence at 7 p.m.

More than 130 items will be up for bids. These include dinners at upscale restaurants, flying lessons in a Cessna plane, a quarter-sawn cherry blanket chest lined with cedar, a handtufted Indian rug, artwork, a wooden rocking horse, Ghanaian baskets, a designer purse, collectible coins, gift card bundles, and more.

Pfoutz hopes that area residents will attend and bid liberally. “Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission represents the culture of Lancaster County,” he said. “In this county, people are generally caring, interested in helping when a need exists, and generous with what God has blessed them with. The money you might spend on an item that will bring joy into your life will make an impact in the life of a person halfway around the world in Ghana, West Africa.”

The next mobile clinic in Ghana will take place from Tuesday, July 30, to Sunday, Aug. 11. Volunteers are being recruited now.

One notable change has been made to Go-Fore Golf this year.

After several years of glow-inthe-dark golfing, the feature has been discontinued, and the course will be open only for regular play. Kennedy explained that the library’s new LED light fixtures do not accept blacklight

bulbs, and the emergency lights are too bright for the event. “The puddles of too-bright-for-glowsticks and the puddles of sodark-we-are-walking-into-things didn’t really work,” she said. “The daytime golf is more popular, so we extended those hours to make up for no more glow.”

The library will be closed for regular business on Feb. 23.

Passport appointments will not be set, and passport walk-ins will not be taken. Computers will not be available for use.

The American Heart Association, an organization focused on heart and brain health, has named Bernadette Taylor as the chair of the 2019 Lancaster Heart Walk.

Taylor is senior executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Fulton Financial Corporation, a role has she held since May 2015. She began her career at Fulton Financial Corporation as corporate training director.

Prior to working for Fulton Financial Corporation, Bernadette worked for MetLife as a senior consultant in its training and development and personal research areas. She holds a master’s degree and doctorate in industrial/organizational psychology from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Fordham University in New York.
