Library Will Hold Go Fore Golf Event on Feb. 21
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The Quarryville Library is preparing for its marquee event of the year.
The annual Go Fore Golf activity will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville.
“It is a fun day out with the family in the middle of winter, when there’s not a lot going on and people want something to do to get out of the house,” Quarryville Library director Michele Lefler said. “We have a family-friendly event going on. It supports the library, which everybody loves, and it’s just a way to have fun.”
The library will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, and will also be closed for regular business on Feb. 21.
There is no age restriction. Children between the ages of 3 and 10

It will soon be time for one of the Southern End’s richest traditions.
The Slumbering Groundhog Lodge, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville, will hold its 118th celebration of Groundhog Day on, of course, Monday, Feb 2. Everyone is invited to the outdoors event, which will be held snow or shine. The lodge building is not open to the public.

Aim of JOAD Program Is for Archers to Find Themselves
BY JEFF FALK
Sports can play a key role in a young person’s development.
A nontraditional sport, archery is given an avenue through the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program, which provides participation and competition opportunities for students. Perhaps the most important thing that JOAD does is bring out the best in kids.
“I want (students) to learn about archery, their archery,” said Bryan Baker, an assistant manager at the Lancaster Archery Academy. “Their archery is different than other people’s, just the mechanics of it. But beyond that, I want them to learn who they are. I want them to figure out what their identity is, especially if they’re doing this at a very high level. I don’t want their identity to be defined by their success. That’s a very dangerous place for an athlete to be.”
Located at 2195-A Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, Lancaster Archery Academy both hosts and sponsors the JOAD program, an initiative created by the national governing body USA Archery. The program is designed to teach young people the sport, get them involved with it and develop national and world-level competitors, depending upon each individual’s level of interest.
There are fees associated with participation in the JOAD program.
“It depends on the archer, and it depends on their goals,” said Baker. “For some, it’s a reason to

will receive a discount, and children age 2 and under are permitted to play for free using toy clubs. Space is limited. To register, go to https://tinyurl .com/4sv3avm6. The deadline to register is Feb. 20 at 3 p.m.
Groups of four or fewer will be sent out on the course in five-minute increments. “We ask that if someone has a party larger than four that they reserve multiple tee times, so that each one only has a maximum of four people,” Lefler said. “That way it doesn’t get backed up, and we can keep people moving through.”

another library, and it fits because we have them custom-measured and designed to fit around our bookshelves. We store it in between events every year and then bring it back out, but it is a fully functioning 18-hole mini golf course. It did start with less than 18 holes and has grown over the years to be a full 18 holes now.”

Go Fore Golf is a chance to play miniature golf on a unique setup. “We have a custom-built course just for our library,” said Lefler. “You could not take it in

A café, operated by the Friends of the Quarryville Library, will sell food, including hot dogs, an assortment of sandwiches, soups, tater tots, chips, applesauce, baked goods, water, and soda. Balloon artist Bill Rexroad will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be face painting, a silent auction, and chances to win theme baskets. “It’s basically

what businesses send in or what we can go out and secure from our volunteers and our Friends of the Library and board members,” said Lefler. Proceeds will go the library. “This is our signature fundraising event,”
said Lefler. “People love it. We see people coming year after year. People are already waiting at the very beginning of the year to go on and register and be able to get their tee time. People do enjoy it. It is our biggest event.”

doughnuts will be provided to visitors.
Lodge members will convene in front of the White Rock Covered Bridge at 8 a.m. At 8:15 a.m., there will be a parade led by Hibernating Governor Charlie Hart and Defender of the Faith Stu Mylin.
Next in line will be the “inner sanctum,” which is composed of members 75 years old and older, and then the eight squads - Dunking Squad, Snoop Squad, Shale Belt Squad, Puddle Duck Squad, Talley Ho Squad, Card Sharks Squad, Dill Pickles Squad, and Baldy Bute Squad.
Following the parade, everyone will gather in the parking lot in front of the Pinnacle of Prognostication, where Octoraro Orphie will take center stage. “Myself and the Defender of the Faith will be on the pinnacle, which is a manure spreader,” said Hart. “The squads will give their report on what they found during the night as far as Orphie goes. They’ll give their report to me, and then after that, I will give the final report of whether or not Orphie sees his shadow.”
One thing will be missing from
this year’s festivities - new lodge inductees. No one applied, so there will be no baby groundhogs for the first time in memory, and no one will be dunked into the west branch of the Octoraro Creek barring a surprise, which can’t be ruled out.
After Orphie’s forecast, the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge’s Class of 2018 will present a skit. Each year, the class that reaches its seventh year of membership is in charge of putting on a skit in front of the crowd on Groundhog Day. It is the Class of 2018’s turn because there was no celebration during COVID.
“I think it’s entertaining,” said board member Erick Anderson. “The whole thing coming off the bridge, the parade, that’s entertaining. There are bonfires going on and a lot of good socialization.”
Board member Keith Kreider added, “It’s just a great party. It’s just a fun place to be.”
During January, members meet weekly at the lodge. “We have breakfast and lunch, and that happens each Sunday in January up to Groundhog Day, and then Groundhog Day is our grand finale,” Hart said.

get out of bed in the morning. Some want to have fun with their friends. If the goal is to be able to shoot at states, more time is going to be required, more effort. You need to be able to have flexibility in your program to cater to both types of people.”
Lancaster Archery Academy is home to three separate indoor shooting ranges for training, instruction and practice. The facility’s main range features 12 targets set downrange at an international standard distance of 18 meters, 23 target lanes, a waiting area and spectator space.
The academy’s JOAD program is actually two programs rolled into one. Shooters who attend the program that meets at Lancaster Archery Academy on Thursdays are generally less experienced or more casual, while the Saturday sessions tend to be more intense and designed for archers who are more experienced.
“It’s like any skill you want to improve,” said Baker. “(Students) are going to fail a lot, and that’s a good thing. You make mistakes, and you’re going to want to enjoy the process of archery. It doesn’t come right away, and it comes with practice. The more you practice, the more proficient you’ll get at it.”
“The approach I’d like to see archers take is, ‘Let’s see how good I can get at it. I don’t know, but I’m going to

find out,’” added Baker. “That’s the question everyone should be asking at the beginning and at the end.”
Currently, there are about 70 archers between the ages of 8 and 20 enrolled in the JOAD program at Lancaster Archery Academy. The students reside in Lancaster County, southeastern Pennsylvania, other areas across the state, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
“These archers are people you walk past at supermarkets,” said Baker. “They’re the kids who play with your kids. They’re people. They’re your neighbors. They’re your friends. They’re you. You can enter it at any age and excel in it. Anbody can do this and enjoy this really cool experience.”
There are 10 instructors who work at the Lancaster Archery Academy, and many of those teachers instruct students enrolled in the JOAD program.
“Patience is important,” said Baker. “Teaching archery is no different than teaching anything else. You have to
understand the person you are teaching. You have to have conversations to learn on a deeper level. You teach basic aspects at the beginning. A lot of people understand how to do a large breadth of tasks, and all of those require motor skills and a mental frame.”
Many of the more serious JOAD archers compete in local, regional, national and international tournaments, as many as 24 tournaments in a year.
“The Junior Olympic Archery Development program was created by USA Archery in order to have a talented pool of competitors to pull from for major international events,” said Baker. “It’s been a vastly successful program. One of the reasons it’s been successful is because each JOAD program is given a wide latitude on how it executes its mission.”
