Boy Scout Plans SECA Renovation Project

PaulKellerman, a 17-year-old junior at Oxford Area High School, recently received approval for his Eagle Scout project. The project will involve renovating the bathrooms at the Southern End Community Association (SECA) pool.

In order to receive approval for his project, Kellerman first had to present to the board members of Boy Scout Troop 13 and detail what his project would accomplish and how he would raise the funds necessary to complete it. Kellerman then presented his project to the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and contacted several local businesses to find sponsors for the renovation.

Kellerman will begin working on the project on Saturday, Jan. 28. Kellerman’s first order of business will be to strip the walls of the bathrooms and clean the spaces to prepare for the renovation, and he has enlisted the help of his siblings, fellow troop members and adviser Bob Landis. Stripping the bathrooms won’t require any fundraising, but Kellerman hopes to raise the funds required to take further steps in the project, such as replacing the valves for the toilets, repainting the walls, replacing shower heads and fixing the piping.

W hen deciding on his Eagle Scout project, Kellerman was drawn to the SECA pool, where he worked as a lifeguard last summer. Kellerman joined SECA’s swim team when he was 9 years old and has continued to swim at the community pool in addition to swimming at Oxford Area High School. “I love the community around SECA. The people that work and the people who come to the pool create a positive atmosphere that makes it great to be there,” said Kellerman.

Kellerman hasn’t worked on a project of this exact nature before, but he will be assisted by Landis, who is a plumber. Kellerman has

worked on various other construction projects through Troop 13, such as building a stand for a park map, assembling horse ties for Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area in Maryland and constructing a storage shed at his Scout cabin.

Kellerman has been a member of Troop 13 for seven years and credits his time in Boy Scouts with instilling values in him that he applies to the rest of his life.

“You gain a lot of experience in leadership and working with others,” Kellerman said. “Scouting makes you a hardworking person.” Kellerman plans to join the Navy after high school but hopes to become involved with Boy Scouts again as a troop leader after his service.

For information on how to support the project, email bsa13treasurer @gmail.com.

Celebrating Scottish Poet Robert Burns

The fifth annual Burns Night, held in memory of Scotland’s poet laureate Robert Burns, will be presented by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Historic Beale Manor, 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m., when guests will be greeted by bagpiper Thompson McConnell, followed by a social time with music by fiddler Tom Knapp, founder of Lancaster’s Fire in the Glen, an Irish music trio.

A traditional haggis ceremony, led by Donald Henderson Jr., will follow, ending with a toast of Scotch. A supper buffet will be served, which will include haggis, Angus beef, Scottish soup, salad and neeps and tatties, which are turnips and potatoes. For dessert there will be trifle, shortbread and cakes.

Janssen’s 13 Points Lead Solanco Past Donegal

In a game they expected to win, Solanco bolted out to a 22-0 lead, broke up a threegame losing streak, and sailed past visiting Donegal 47-33.

The hosts, with some effective trapping defense and steals that turned into layups, led 180 in the first quarter, and added two straight buckets in the second for that 22-0 lead. Donegal hit a pair of threes later that quarter but Solanco was in control, leading 31-8 at the break.

“That first quarter was our best this year,” stated interim head coach Jeff McCardell.

“ We scored 21 points off of turnovers, which was huge, and scored 34 points in the paint, including 13 second chance points.”

Solanco scored the first six points of the third quarter before Donegal regrouped, putting together an 8-0 run to close the lead to 37-16. But it wasn’t near enough. Solanco, despite 30 turnovers in the game, led 41-20 heading into the final quarter and picked up its fourth win of the season. Those 47 points scored match a season high.

Josie Jansen netted a seasonhigh 13 points and grabbed six steals to fuel the attack. Jenna Ehlers finished with nine and hauled in a team-high eight

rebounds. Kara Peace (4 points) followed with seven rebounds. Arianna Seiberlich (6 pts), Sarah Landis (5), Frances Northern (4), Paige Althoff, Abby Landis, and Emily Sims (2 each) also reached the scoring column.

“Having nine players score was nice and was also a season high,” pointed out McCardell.

“ We did rush more in the second half against their full court pressure,” he added, “w hich caused us to have 20 turnovers in the half, but we did not press in that second half either. With back-to-back games we were trying to be a little more conservative on defense to save energy for Tuesday (Penn Manor).”

In that Tuesday game against the visiting Comets, Solanco was looking to avenge their holiday tournament loss. Penn Manor, however, fresh off a mercy rule loss to Manheim Township, outscored the hosts, just barely, in every quarter to finish on top 43-31.

Manor drilled seven treys on the night, including three in the third quarter, to highlight their offense. Solanco had the opportunity to keep things even closer but struggled from the free throw line, sinking just 7-of-17 attempts, including 2-of-9 in the second half.

Althoff netted a seasonhigh 10 points as Solanco dropped to 4-11 overall.

Also, over the last week, Solanco dropped a 35-31 result at Garden Spot on Friday, Jan. 13.

This one was neck-and-neck the whole way. Spot held a 9-7 first quarter edge before Solanco flipped the result in the second frame, knotting the score at 16-16 at the break. Both teams tallied three third quarter points leaving the outcome to the final minutes. The Spartans knocked down four field goals, including a triple and went 7for-15 at the stripe. Solanco also drilled a trey (Seiberlich) and added three two pointers, two by Northern, but went 3-for-6 from the charity stripe, missing the front end of a pair of oneand-ones, to fall behind.

Neither team had a doubledigit scorer. Seiberlich netted five of her seven in the fourth while Northern and Althoff both settled for six points. Peace added four and Janssen and Sims each hit from beyond the arc with Landis adding two.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

In a battle to stay out of the basement of the Section Two standings, Solanco hosted Garden Spot on an unlucky Friday the 13th. With point guard Ty Burger still out of the lineup (concussion) the Mules dropped another close one, 48-38.

“Not having Ty has rattled us a bit,” said head coach Anthony Hall. “We were standing around too much and we struggled to find the open man.”

Down 10-8 in the first quarter, Elijah Cunningham scored six of his eight and six of his team’s 11 to keep the Mules in striking distance, 2219 at the break. The Spartans, however, gained some distance in the third, outscoring the hosts 14-7. Both teams knocked down ten fourth quarter points with Noah Bailey hitting a pair of treys.

“Defensively we struggled switching on ball screens,” said Hall. “There was a lack of communication and again, finding the open man.

“ We finished with 18 turnovers in the game, which is too many,” the coach continued. “The silver lining is that we’re not getting blown out. We’ve been competitive and have been in just about every game we have lost. I felt this was a winnable game.”

With three treys on the night, Jadon Yoder netted a team-high 11. Bailey added 10 as the only double figure scorers. Spot’s Bryce Weaver dropped a game high 13.

“ We were down 15 with 2:30 left and we made some changes in the lineup, scored three straight buckets and got it under ten with 30 seconds left,” Hall said. “The younger kids are starting to get it. Chase Soto defended well, grabbed a couple of rebounds, and took a charge. His energy off the bench was a big plus.”

On the road Tuesday the Mules crossed over with Section One foe Penn Manor (8-8 overall) but couldn’t match the Comets in size or speed and suffered its first 20-point loss of the season, 57-37.

A bucket by Gavin Cox with 2:15 left in the first quarter tied the game at 9-9 but the hosts went on a 10-3 run that included back-to-back 3’s by Ethan Benne (12 points), to lead 1912. They never looked back.

Benne (6’4”) along with Dhamir Wesley and Nate Schmidtke, both 6’5”, controlled the boards and sparked Manor’s transition game with quick passes up the floor.

“ We’re down 27-16 at the half and gave up four offensive rebounds that they converted,” noted Hall. “That changes the game. They have a lot of size.”

Austin Wenger’s jumper early in the third cut the lead to ten, 30-20, but Solanco never got closer.

The Comets placed four players in double figures, three with 11. Noah Baber netted nine for the Mules. Manny Himes came off the bench with seven and Osborne and Bailey added six each to lead the visitors.

WRESTLING

Ten falls, a pair of forfeits and one decision made for a quick wrestling match last Wednesday, January 18 in Quarryville. The visiting Knights of Hempfield claimed six falls and both of those forfeits to extend a 30-27 advantage to a 48-27 road win.

“ We knew it would be a tough match,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “They’re undefeated and we’re forfeiting two weight classes. We had a couple of unfortunate matchups but, overall, we’re moving in the right direction. We wrestled

a competitive match.”

The match was back-andf orth early. Caden Rutt pinned Charlie Williams in 38 seconds for the fastest fall of the night. Hempfield pinned at 114 before Nathan Smith flattened Sutton Schopf (121) in 50 seconds. The Knights answered with back-to-back falls to take the lead for good.

Jared Fulton’s 3-1 decision at 139 cut the lead to 18-15.

The next four bouts featured pins with each squad getting two. Justin McCauley (152) and Blaine Plastino pinned for the Mules, cutting the lead to 30-27. The

Knights wrapped up the action with those two forfeits and a fall.

INDOOR TRACK

Katie Urbine and Tucker Kylar were among 25 Solanco athletes that competed in Franklin and Marshall’s Indoor Track Meet Saturday, Jan. 14. Urbine cleared 12-7 to win the pole vault while Kylar grabbed second in both the high (6-0) and triple (378.5) jumps.

“Tucker is the top freshman high jumper in the state,” said head coach Jen McDowell. “ We had several top ten finishes. It was a good day.”

Because it’s all around and everywhere you look, anyone can appreciate the beauty of Lititz. But Tom Roe perceives it in a much different way - through the lens of a camera.

Roe, a local professional photographer, is a self-professed visual storyteller. And of all the subjects he captures, one of his favorites to portray is his adopted hometown of Lititz.

“Essentially, Lititz is very

photogenic,” said Roe. “But what separates the work I do from taking pictures with a cellphone is planning and execution. I want to show off the beauty of Lititz in the best possible way. Yes, Lititz is a beautiful town, but that makes it even more important to capture it in the right way. You’ve got to give it the respect it deserves.”

Through his photography, Roe has engrained himself in the Lititz community.

Roe works closely with the

tourism-oriented organization Venture Lititz and helps promote local businesses and people through his commercial photography. He estimated that 80% of his paid work originates from the Warwick and Ephrata areas.

Recently, he published the “Tom Roe Photography Presents 2023 Lititz Community Choice Calendar,” which features familiar shots of the town presented in a uniquely artistic fashion.

“Since I moved here in 2018, it’s been my main focus,

the town,” said Roe, a graduate of Solanco High School. “Photography is an art. You can’t learn to be an artist. You can learn the art. Learning how to be a photographer from an artistic point of view was what I was missing.”

It was that evolution as an artist that allowed Roe to become a professional. After 20 years of honing his craft, Roe ditched his job in retail and took the full-time leap into the world of professional photography - products, portraits and promotions.

The Giant Company’s team of dietitians will offer free, live classes via Zoom for families and chefs of all ages in January and February.

Produce Spotlight will be featured every Monday at noon. On Jan. 30, the featured recipe will be peanut butter and banana French toast. The January programs

have focused on seasonal produce and the ways it strengthens people’s immune systems. In February, the dietitians will explore red, yellow, green and blue color groups and the many benefits of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

Wellbeing Workshops will also be offered. On Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., attendees will take a

virtual tour of Giant’s produce department and learn about the available products. Celebrate Heart Health Month in February with classes like Mediterranean Diet.

In honor of National Soup Month, the dietitians will conclude the Build a Balanced Soup series on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at noon. In February, the

Build a Balanced programs will continue, highlighting ideas for building a balanced spaghetti night, salad, dessert and oatmeal bowl.

Family Meals at 5 will be offered every Tuesday at 5 p.m. Dietitians will help home cooks build easy, quick and balanced meals in under 30 minutes. Concluding January’s “Take 5” themed programs, the Jan. 31 class will feature a recipe requiring five or fewer ingredients. In February, recipes will include a Valentine’s Day top sirloin steak with asparagus and tomato orzo.

The Giant Company dietitians are also kicking off the new year with special classes on select Thursdays at 7 p.m. Recipes for NFL championship parties will be featured on Feb. 9, and “Ask the Dietitian” will be offered on Feb. 23.

Individuals are invited to visit Giant’s YouTube channel for a new Meal Deal Series program every Friday morning. In these short videos, viewers will learn about the featured Meal Deal, as well as specials and offers in that week’s circular.

“It’s my profession. It’s what I do,” said Roe. “It’s more work than people think. What I do is very complicated. Every single photo I approach, 98% of the work is done before I take the shot. It’s the execution that’s important. It’s a long process and every step is connected.”

Roe has learned a lot on the job through repetition and trial and error, building on his education at Hallmark Institute of Photography in Massachusetts. However, his

photography education began long before that, as he grew up around the art form.

“W hen I was a kid, we’d go on camping trips, and I was always the first one to grab the disposable cameras,” said Roe. “My mom would always bring three or four cameras along, and she’d have to hide them from me. At one point, I was like, ‘You mean you can do this for a living?’ I set my mind to it. I decided to go to school for it and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Rural Development Grants Available

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development will accept grant applications for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program to help people in rural and tribal communities access remote education and health care resources. The DLT program helps fund realtime, interactive distance learning and telemedicine services in rural and tribal areas to increase access to education, training, and health care resources that are otherwise limited or unavailable.

For instance, the DLT program gives students the opportunity to participate in classes that may be in places that are too far to access. DLT funds can also help connect rural people virtually to medical professionals without leaving their home.

USDA plans to make $64 million available in fiscal year 2023. Of this amount, $12 million is intended for projects that provide substance use disorder treatment services to people in rural areas.

Eligible applicants include state and local governmental entities, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, and forprofit businesses. Applications must be submitted electronically through www.grants.gov by Monday, Jan. 30. For additional information, visit www.rd.usda.gov and look under Programs and Services for Telecommunications Programs and then click on Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants.

USDA is offering priority points to projects that meet certain criteria. These extra points will increase the likelihood of funding. For more information, visit www.rd .usda.gov/priority-points.

Robert Burns

After supper, guests will be invited to honor the life of Robert “Rabbie” Burns with speeches, readings and toasts. Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns.” Guests will be invited to gather around the piano to sing Burns songs to conclude the evening. Burns is best known for writing the words to “Auld Lang Syne,” which has become associated with New Year’s Eve.

Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their tartans, but it is not required.

Beale Manor was chosen as the venue because of its historic charm. It is a Victorianstyle mansion that was built in 1813 by John Parke, founder of Parkesburg. It was reconstructed in 1896 by ironmaster Horace Beale. “It is the perfect place for this event,” said Donna McCool, foundation treasurer. “It has parqueted floors and fireplaces, high ceilings and nice woodwork.”

The annual Burns Night is a fundraising event to help maintain and preserve historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The historic

frompg 1

building is open for special events, including the foundation’s annual Scottish Festival in September. The Covenanter Church is also open the third Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m.

The church has an attached schoolroom, a Presbyterian Academy, which was added to the church about 1880. From 1901 to 1927, the schoolroom housed Bart Township High School. The building now serves as a museum displaying artifacts from the church, Bart Township High School and Bart Township. “There is a lot of local genealogy and a lot of Scottish (memorabilia) and a lot of school history like desks

and a chalkboard and pictures and books,” said McCool.

Tickets are available for Burns Night. The fee for this fundraiser will include food; the beverages, including Scotch, beer and wine; and the entertainment. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held at a later date.

For more information and a link to purchase tickets, visit www.facebook.com /CovenanterChurch and choose Events or visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor 2023.” Information is also available by contacting McCool at 610-593-6989. The deadline to order tickets is Monday, Jan. 30. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

PeoplesBank is a key partner of the Y Community Development Corporation and the YMCA, with this year being the fourth year of a five-year commitment in the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Through the program, millions of dollars have gone toward improving the quality of life of thousands of individuals, youths and families.

The YMCA and its partners have transformed blighted properties into low-income housing; installed and maintained streetlights; implemented security camera systems, which have been used to assist law enforcement; maintained the appearance of local neighborhoods through façade improvements; and been part of ongoing street sweeping efforts.

To learn more about the YMCA’s community development work, contact Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@rosesymca.org.

Established in November of 2021, the YMCA of the Roses is the result of a merger between the YMCA of York and York County and the Lancaster Family YMCA.
