Swift Middle School sixth-grader Miles Tucker made a sarcophagus as part of his Egyptian Fair project.

Kathryn Davis is a staunch believer in serving her community and country. The 2024 Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School graduate was crowned Miss Lancaster County last fall, earning the right to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant in mid-June at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. “I’m super excited to represent my hometown,” said Davis. The victor of the Miss Pennsylvania contest will advance to the Miss America pageant. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about since I was a little girl,” said Davis. “Right now, my focus is on Miss Pennsylvania. Whatever God has in store will happen.” She was enthroned as Miss Lancaster County Sept. 24 at Ephrata High School. “It was so unexpected,” Davis said. The competition was composed of a 10-minute interview, which was 30% of the total score; an onstage question about the contestants’ community service initiative (10%); talent demonstration (20%); a fitness competition in athleticwear (20%); and an evening gown walk (20%). Three titles - Miss Southern Lancaster County, Miss Heart of Lancaster, and Miss Red Rose City - were announced prior to Miss Lancaster County. Davis thought she had a better chance to win one of those crowns, but she tried to remain optimistic before the announcement of the big prize. “I was definitely nervous, but I had a little bit of hope,” she said.

T he Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative. Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000. Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.

the industry. All the equipment that we approve first is approved by the OAC.” The LCCTF’s mission is simple. “Everything we do is to supplement what the school’s already doing, and it’s to enhance their curriculum, training experience, and their education,” Baker said. “Just last year alone, we probably gave over $400,000 in equipment, scholarships, and financial assistance to students. We help provide students that are in need of (school) uniforms. We have tuition assistance programs for adult students. Our impact is pretty significant across all of the programs here and all of the campuses.” She provided an example of the organization’s effectiveness. “We had a student that said, ‘I was working at this welding shop, and we were using this laser welder that was purchased with one of our grants, and they were so impressed that I knew how to use that,’” Baker said. “We’re hoping that we’re giving our students a leg up when it comes to entering the workforce and finding those careers that will be life-changing for them.” For more information on the Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation, go to www.lcctf.org.

Oasis Women’s Ministry of Pennsylvania will offer a winter session of Bible studies beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The group invites all women in the community to gather on Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. Three choices of study are available. Participants in “Romans: Not Ashamed of the Gospel” will read through Paul’s letter verse by verse to enhance understanding of his message, how it fits into the whole story of the Bible, and its relevance to daily life. This study will meet for 12 weeks and conclude on April 15. In addition, there are two seven-week studies that will conclude on March 11. “Heaven: When Faith Becomes Sight” by Jennifer Rothschild is a video-based study with a workbook that explores the subject of heaven from a biblical perspective and provides encouragement to live with peace and confidence in what awaits. “Conversation Peace: The Power of Transformed Speech” by Mary Kassian provides practical help from the Word of God to improve communication skills and relationships with others. Participants should bring their own Bible. Workbooks, if applicable, will be available to purchase at the first meeting. The intention of Oasis is to provide a restful place for women to pause in the midst of life’s journey and connect with God and with one another. Each meeting begins with coffee and breakfast refreshments followed by worship in music and then the Bible studies. All of the studies prioritize See Oasis pg 8

Local Service That Makes a Difference

invited to come to Swift to see the displays, as are fourth- and fifth-graders from adjacent Clermont Elementary School. “It’s always nice, because then when we see (the Clermont students) in the years to come when they’re in sixth grade, they always say, ‘Oh, I just remember when I was there,’ and I ( re s p o n d ) , ‘ No w i t ’s your turn to carry on the legacy,’” Miller shared. Student Molly Stringer made a pyramid out of tiny building blocks. “I learned all about Egypt,” she said. “I learned the Great Sphinx. I learned the Pyramid of Giza, I learned about the Nile River.” Miles Tucker constructed a sarcophagus and could be frequently found lying in it during the event. He got some help building it from his m o t h e r, M e l i s s a , w h o traced around his body, so Miles knew how big to make the sarcophagus. “I folded the cardboard up to make the base, and then I had to paint it and make sure it was structurally sound,” said Miles. Miles explained that students use the acronym

GRAPES (geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics, and social structures) to understand what they are expected to learn. Emma Olszewski built a replica king’s tomb with King Tut in it. “I thought it was really cool how they structured it,” she said. “It was the first tomb that they actually found that the tomb raiders hadn’t stolen all the things from. I thought that that was really cool, and then I tried to make it as best as I could.” She said she gained a great deal of knowledge from the assignment. “I learned back in that time in Egypt it was really hard to live, but when they lived by the Nile River, it provided a lot of food and water for the crops,” Emma said. “And I thought it was cool the way that they used the barter system, which is basically where they traded goods instead of using money to get stuff. I thought that that was a pretty efficient way of living, especially since they made sure all the things that they traded were equal.”

Oasis from pg 5 small group discussion for learning together and growing friendships. A prayer group is also available. Oasis includes a children’s ministry, which provides supervision, snacks, crafts, and Bible stories for nursery, preschool, and homeschooled students. A freewill offering will be received each week. In the event of wintry weather, Oasis will follow

Solanco School District’s schedule. If the school district has a closing or delay, Oasis will not meet. The session calendar will be extended to make up for any missed weeks. Preregistration is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome at any time. For more information or to preregister, visit www.oasiswomen .org or call or text Gail at 717-799-8583.
