SECA

With the arrival of 2023 and the conclusion of New Year’s festivities, many organizations are already looking ahead and filling their schedules for the coming months. Although there are still a few more months of cold left to endure, the Southern End Community Association (SECA) has slated a handful of events and programs to look forward to.
SECA published the schedule for its biweekly Friday night bingo games on Facebook in the beginning of January; upcoming dates include Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and Feb. 24. Doors will open each night at 5 p.m., and bingo will begin at 6 p.m. Snacks such as hot dogs and chips will be available for purchase,
as well as soft drinks and other beverages. There will be a set cost depending on the number of boards purchased, and the winning jackpot will be capped at $500. Participants must be 18 years of age or older to play, but children may attend.
Early-bird registration for a SECA pool pass will be open until Tuesday, Jan. 31, after which pool passes will be available to purchase at standard price.
Although there are still a few more months of cold left to endure, the Southern End Community Association (SECA) has slated a handful of events and programs to look forward to.
Youth flag football registration is also open until Friday, Feb. 17, and the first game will take place on Sunday, March 19. The flag football
program is separated into three groups: youngsters ages 5 to 7, children ages 8 to 11 and youths ages 12 to 15. The flag football program is always in need of coaches; those interested in coaching may contact SECA at director@secarec.com.
SECA’s men’s basketball program will kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Smith Middle School and will continue on Tuesday evenings.
SECA will host its yearly St. Patrick’s Day Money Party on Saturday, March 11. Participants in the fundraising event will pay a set price for a ticket; each ticket will
then be assigned to a ball in a bingo machine. Once a participant’s number is pulled, he or she is eliminated from the game; however, every 10th ticket number called will earn its owner a prize. The owner of the ticket that is pulled last will win the main prize.
Last summer, SECA hosted a free picnic at its pavilion for local veterans and first responders. This summer, SECA director Trevor Marsh plans to host the event at the pool instead. “Last year was the first year that we had the event,” Marsh said. “We don’t make any money from it; we just wanted to give back to the community and show our appreciation.”

Basketball Runs In The Family
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In June 2022, Mike Glackin started as the girls’ varsity basketball coach at Penn Manor High School. The Solanco High School graduate and Millersville resident previously served as the team’s assistant coach last year, a position that his cousin Gillian took over at the beginning of this year’s season.
Mike’s journey with basketball began when he was a student at Solanco, where he played on the varsity basketball team for three years. Mike’s family has always been heavily involved in the sport; his uncle was the head coach of the basketball team during his senior year, and his father was the junior varsity coach. “It’s always been a part of our family,” said Mike. “From a young age, I wanted to play basketball for a living. After growing up, I realized that if I wanted to keep doing it, I would need to become a coach.”

Prior to the Section One match between Solanco and visiting Penn Manor on Jan. 11 in Quarryville, the two wrestling programs took a moment to recognize the life of Jerry Miller. Joining both teams on the mat was Jerry’s wife, Karen Miller, along with Jerry and Karen’s daughter, Tonya Grassel, and grandsons, former Penn Manor wrestlers Trevor and Ty Grassel.
Jerry, an avid support and contributor to both the Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling programs, passed away on July 29, 2022. One of Jerry’s many passions in life was wrestling, and he always made Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling a priority. Jerry was an elementary wrestling coach for Solanco for many years, including when his son Troy
began wrestling. He also volunteered in the Solanco Wrestling Booster Club and was one of the many people who helped with the formation of the original wrestling
building at Solanco.
Later in life, as Jerry’s grandsons started their careers at Penn Manor, he continued volunteering his time, now to Penn Manor, to
help the program in any way he could, volunteering at many events and always being in the stands to cheer on his grandsons and the rest of the Penn Manor team.

Jerry Miller Recognized With Miller Mallet Trophy

Immediately after graduating from Solanco High School in 2001, Mike became involved with coaching the school’s boys’ team and the girls’ team as he attended college. After coaching at Solanco for 12 years, Mike took a position as the head coach for Dayspring Christian Academy’s varsity boys’ basketball team. “Just seeing the improvement of players and the impact of their progress makes being a coach rewarding,” said Mike.
When Mike was the assistant coach of the Solanco High School girls’ team, his uncle was the head coach and Gillian was a player. Mike credits Gillian with introducing him to girls’ basketball. “It’s really cool to share the experience of coaching with her,” said Mike. “It’s her first
time coaching and it’s cool to be a part of it.”
One of the things that Mike values the most about the basketball program is its ability to help kids develop skills that will serve them in other areas of their lives. While on a team, students learn how to get along with other people, how to confront adversity and disappointment and how to respond quickly to obstacles with positivity. “(Players) make a huge impact individually, but it’s still a team sport,” said Mike. “In other sports, you might be able to specialize in one area of the field, but in basketball you’re involved with every play.”
Mike describes his coaching technique as personal and individualistic. Instead of focusing on the technical aspects of playing the game first, Mike
prefers to adjust his coaching methods to fit each player on the team. “It’s all about the people,” said Mike. “You have to approach the people in front of you and tweak your techniques to them.”
Mike hopes to build up the basketball program moving forward and looks forward to coaching alongside Gillian. “The plan is to keep getting the kids excited about basketball,” Mike said.

Participants at Challenger Clubs - monthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities – do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around
his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs. “There are so many smiles.”
HVMI has run Challenger Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chest-
nut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.
Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life application of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions. It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.” Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are
welcome to stay. “The respite piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.
According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting. “(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.

Do’s And Don’ts Of Healthy Weight Loss
Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results,
and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to
10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may
Historical Society To Reprise Program
The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The program is free and open to the public.
The program will be “The Illustrated Story of the Little, Old and Slow” by Stan White. Mary Boomsma, who died on Sept. 17, 2022, and White worked over the years to present many programs on local topics. Possibly Boomsma’s favorite was on the L., O. & S. Railroad, although the program
on the Sunken Town of Peach Bottom Village was a close second. Having a recording of the “Little, Old and Slow” program, made during a rehearsal, White was able to bring Boomsma along for one more presentation, in remembrance of the fun they had working together.
make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.
DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.
The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities.
“A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy the club so much they cannot wait to return. “We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.

At the time of his passing, his family asked that contributions be made to both the Penn Manor and Solanco wrestling programs to honor his memory and the commitment he had to both programs.
While Penn Manor and Solanco have shared a competitive rivalry over the years, both programs share a passion for wrestling and respect for each other, just as Jerry embodied throughout his life. The Solanco and Penn Manor match has always held a special significance to both programs, reflected by the intensity on the mat whenever these two teams meet.
In light of that, and to honor Jerry Miller’s lifetime of contributions to both programs, Penn Manor and Solanco will annually battle for the Miller Mallet trophy. This mallet, complete with Jerry’s hand-engraved initials, was owned by Jerry and used extensively in his metal working. Jerry’s family donated the mallet to both programs as a trophy that will be awarded to the winning team from each year’s dual. The Miller Mallet is intended to honor and remember Jerry’s commitment to both wrestling programs and to add to the strong tradition and rivalry between Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling for years to come.

Mules Battle Comets for Miller Mallet Trophy
BY MONA STEINHAUER
After going 3-2 at the Octorara Duals on Saturday, January 7, the Mules hosted Penn Manor in a typically entertaining Section One match on Wednesday, the 11th. This year’s contest had a little more meaning as the two squads were battling for possession of the inaugural “Miller Mallet”, a trophy named in honor of the late Jared Miller, a big supporter of both Solanco and Penn Manor wrestling. Miller’s son, Troy, wrestled for the Mules back in the 90’s and his daughter, Tanya Grassel, has two sons, both wrestled for the Comets.
“Dad would have loved this,” said Tanya Grassel after the match. “He loved both of these programs so much.”
This one proved to be another thriller as the Comets pulled out a 38-33 victory with a second period fall by Carter Rachor at heavyweight.
Caden Rutt (106) put Solanco on the board with a 1:58 fall but Gavin Boland answered with a tech fall at 113. The
Comets forged ahead with a fall at 120 and a tight 5-3 decision at 127 for a 14-9 lead.
The Mules roared back. Andrew Smith (133) earned a tight 6-0 decision over Ethan Farmer while Jared Fulton (139) and Justin McCauley (145) secured back-to-back falls before forfeit points at 152 pushed the lead to 27-14.
Not to be out done, the visitors countered with the fastest fall of the night, 39 seconds at 160, before a first period fall by Blaine Plastino (172) over Chris Hubbs pushed Solanco’s advantage to 33-20.
But then the Mules forfeited at 189 and 215, leaving the Comets in striking distance, 33-32. Jamar Moore worked a first period takedown and nearfall points for a 5-0 advantage and appeared to have Rachor pinned in the second period before a flurry saw the Comet grappler scramble to the top and secure the victory.
“It’s a little disappointing because we were missing two starters who got injured at Octorara,” said head coach
Tony Mendez. “It’s tough without a full lineup. And I kind of thought Jamar had the fall but that’s the way it goes. The guys wrestled hard and now we move on.
“It’s nice to have the Miller Mallet trophy now to continue our rivalry with Penn Manor,” he added. “We work with them a lot in the off-season. This will help continue to build the sport.”
At Octorara on Saturday the Mules topped Unionville (42-31), Archbishop Ryan (3929) and New Oxford (39-29) and before slipping against Wilson (42-23) and Oxford (42-36).
“Even in the two losses, I thought we wrestled well,” said Mendez.
Fulton, Ben Williams and Rutt all went 5-0 on the day with Plastino finishing 4-1.
“Blaine lost a 3-1 decision to Wilson’s Blaise Eidle,” noted Mendez. “That’s a tough kid with a 24-4 record and Blaine held his own.”
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The girls’ basketball team broke its six-game losing streak with a 32-27 thriller at Elizabethtown Friday, Jan. 6.
Holding a slim 11-10 edge in the first quarter, the visitors gained some separation in the second frame, holding the Bears to three points while taking an 18-13 lead into halftime. The second half was nipand-tuck with both teams knocking down 14 points.
Jenna Ehlers’ 12-point performance was a game-high effort. Arianna Seiberlich and Paige Althoff chipped in with six points each.
One night later the girls traveled to the West York
Showcase where they came up short against the hosts, 43-26.Solanco held an 8-6 lead in the first quarter but couldn’t solve the Bulldogs after that. WY outscored Solanco in each of the next three frames, including a 133 fourth quarter.
Both teams knocked down 11 two-pointers, but the hosts canned three more treys and five more free throws to pull away.
Sarah Landis netted a season-high 10 points. Seiberlich added 8 and Josie Janssen finished with six as the top Solanco scorers.
Back in action Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Mules, behind a season best 18-points from Ehler’s got off to a 17-10 first half lead against Section Two leader Manheim Central. But the Barons outscored the hosts 32-17 after the break to remain on top of the standings at 5-0.
The Baron’s top gun, Maddie Knier (21.4 ppg avg) was held to 15 but the visitors used a 13-for-20 effort and the free throw line and outscored the hosts 16-8 in the fourth to pull away. Seiberlich and Paige Althoff backed Ehler’s with five points each.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Looking to extend its threegame winning streak, the boys’ basketball team struggled through the middle two frames and came out on the short end of a 44-39 final against visiting Elizabethtown, Friday, Jan. 6.
“I felt like it was one of those games where, no matter what we did or what we tried, nothing was working,” said head coach Anthony Hall. “It was a tough loss, and even though we struggled, I really felt it was a game we should have won. We missed 13 layups, and we were 1-of-13 from behind the arc. Even shooting like that, we were right there at the end.”
The Mules led by as many as six, 11-5, in the first quarter and a bucket by Elijah Cunningham in the second made it 13-8. The Bears battled back and took their second lead of the night, 16-15, with 1:07 left in the half. Both teams traded buckets after that, and the Bears clung
to an 18-17 lead at the break.
Burger turned a steal into a layup and after Etown buried a trey, Noah Baber tied the game before Jaydon Yoder’s bucket put Solanco in front with 2:30 left in the third. The Bears ran off seven straight for the biggest lead of the night, 28-23.
Both teams traded threes to start the fourth and three different times the Mules cut the lead to four, the last coming on a Baber steal and Yoder bucket with 45 ticks remaining, but the Bears had the last say.
“I honestly felt we were the better team, despite our lack of weakside help on defense,” Hall stated. “If we could have executed over the final minute, we could have won. But we are competing and that makes me happy. We’re 6-6 now and I don’t think anyone expected that. We’re also ranked 17th in the district and the top 14 go. That’s a lofty goal, but it could be reachable.”
Bailey tied Brandon Andrews with 15 points. Burger chipped in with 10 as the double-digit scorers.
Tuesday the Mules traveled to section leader Manheim Central (4-0) but didn’t have an answer for Trey Grube and fell short 58-43. Grube, who averages 24.5 ppg, poured in 31 and canned six treys, pushing his total for the year to 45, as the Barons pushed out to a 28-16 first half lead.
Solanco buckled down after the break, playing even with Manheim in the third (14-14) but couldn’t overcome the first half damage.
The Mules, without point guard Tyler Garber (concussion) led with a 16-11 edge in two-point field goals but Manheim dropped in 8 treys, held Solanco to two and were an impressive 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Baber, with 15, was the only double-digit scorer for the Mules. Bailey followed with eight.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program
Posted
County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.
There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase
emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.
According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.
For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Bicycle Club Grant Program Posted
The Lancaster Bicycle Club’s grant program provides funds to support bicycle-related activities and initiatives in Lancaster County. In 2023, the Lancaster Bicycling Club will provide $30,000 in grants.
Grants will be made at the sole discretion of the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Grant funds primarily come from the net profits of the club’s annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic ride, which is held each August.
Grants can be requested by municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations for four primary reasons. Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling features like trails and covered bridges; for bicyclists’ rights and safety advocacy; and to promote bicycling in the county.
Applications are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31. To learn more and apply, visit www .lancasterbikeclub.net.
